Hey Sean, First of all I must commend you on a beautiful, intricate, heartfelt video that I related to personally. But now I must share my story, which I hope can help you in some way. In 2020 I started a RUclips channel called Cynical Duchess. in the beginning, I didn't really know what kind of channel I wanted, I only knew that this was it for me. I tried so many videos: vlogs, fashion content, what I eat in a day, until a year later, something hit, and I finally went viral. But I went viral not for my personality and story like Kariza or Natalie, I went viral for a topic based video (what are people wearing), which I group now with tech reviews, tutorials, and videos people look up to get information, and then forget about a day later. I went through the exact same thing you're going through now. I grew my channel to 40K subs, and after my initial boom, the views began to fluctuate. For me, I only realized later on that all I wanted to make were indie vlogs. But RUclips had already locked me into a what are people wearing niche, and no matter how hard I tried to insert myself into these videos, the views would never translate to any other kind of video I'd try to create. After a long journey of self discovery, I decided the best course of action for me would be to start from scratch. hence a new channel, with my own name. For me, this has been the best decision I could have done, but this doesn't have to be your path. let me instead analyze for you why I think this is happening to you: 1. To be a sustainable creator on RUclips, people have to connect to you, not just the topic you're presenting. The reason why Gawx works, is because we don't watch him for his art, we watch for him. Had he been a traditional art creator, focusing less on storytelling and more on the craft, he'd see the same fluctuation in views, as audiences would choose to watch based off whether they're interested in the tech or technique he's presenting that week. when I saw your kariza / Natalie / Gawx vids, I connected to you. I saw in myself that same journey of self discovery that you are going through, and the same love for the craft of RUclips. I saw Sean. 2. However, that does not mean that I'll watch a tutorial you put out. same reason why if my favorite fantasy author put out a non fiction book, I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. I don't read non fiction. I also don't watch tutorials unless I really have to. The algorithm even knows this, as I wasn't recommended a video by you, until this one-- which happens to be a story. 3. I know that canonically, it makes sense that people interested in RUclipsrs would also be interested in gear, and film techniques, but I actually see it as two completely different genres. And if people watched more for your commentary / storytelling videos about creators, about yourself, I'm not sure they would then click on something else entirely. it could very well be that the algorithm has picked up on the divide in your content as well. I know for me, thats what led to my own fluctuating views. 4. just know that you have time-- time to experiment, and figure out who you want to be as a creator. not everyone has to start a new channel, many can pivot successfully once you truly figure out what you stand for, but know starting again is always an option. just like a second time founder, coming at this with much more advanced knowledge. 5. we all go through this phase, and your resilience will get you far. I know you're gonna make it. you are so talented. keep going.
The fact is i myself am making a video on this topic, "don't give up" yet I still have this feeling that I might not be cut out for this. But I still keep going, idk the fear of not making content and doing anything else just makes mee feel soo anxious
It a strange thing isn't it. I have that same obsession, although I have a very long way to go to get to this level, and I have so many hurdles, I still can't stop thinking about it!

I have been at this for five years, and my biggest mistake is making a hundred or more videos that I considered cringe-worthy and deleted them all. I am starting over with many more skills, but should I have deleted all the ones? Perhaps not. Thanks for your encouragement and your insight about not looking at the numbers.
Good video, important topic and the intro is very nicely made, but gee, those AI-generated stock video sequences inbetween still creep me out, no matter how realistic they may seem at first glance, there’s always an unnatural element left. Granted, I almost didn’t notice, but when I did, it was uncanny.
My biggest problem is that I created over 500 vlogs over the years but I can't say that any of them are amazingly done well... they're just vlogs. After discovering Riza's channel I decided to try and make my videos better or I guess you can say prioritize Quality over Quantity. My dream is to be the first person in my nationality to hit 100k subscribers I know I'm farrrrrrrr away from that but it's a journey I'm willing to go on 🙂

I don't know why we can't be suggested and loved for the natural videos we create. Why does everything have to be done with thousands of dollars in equipment and software. Shouldn't real life information and sharing our lives with others be wanted? It seems sad...

As someone who has been producing videos for the past few years out of love for this craft, I resonate so hard with this, especially the idea of your channel being like a garden. I always tell people I give all my energy to RUclips because it is the only platform which rewards long term commitment to quality content; you never know when your moment will come, but if you continue to provide value and grow your skills, I wholeheartedly believe you will be rewarded in the end. Been following you for a while now, Sean and the advice is spot on! I started my RUclips channel about 2 months ago now and I'm experimenting with the type of creator I want to be. I find that I'm not a fancy filmographer since I don't have the skillset or equipment for that BUT I do want my channel to be a blend of vlogging videos and educational videos. Cheers!

Coming from Asia, I disagree. I was there in 2007 when RUclips and all its competitors were around. TBH RUclips was not even the top option at that time. It was the era of DSLRs, with Olympus micro-fourthirds mirrorless bursting onto the scene later and redefining the camera segment entirely. The number of failed and starving artists here in Asia was just so damn high. People ruined their families taking loans they couldn't afford, just to have a shot at being a "content creator". For you, it's a joy in the process, but for many, it's about putting food on the table. The ability for Riza to tough out a long period of uncertainty and even live on very little cash flow is a rarity. This is coupled with her voice and appearance that makes for a soothing appeal on screen. For people like that, they can eventually be picked up by the algorithm so long as the quality of their work retains the human audience long enough for subsequent AND recent videos to establish a strong subscriber base.
