As a Habs fan, I am incredible hype by this trade, we take a bit of a risk, yes but a good risk for a few reasons. First Laine’s contract only lasted for 2 more years and most of our prospects (Demidov, Pages and Fowler for example) will not get there big contracts before the end of Laine’a contract.
Second, eventhough Harris was a great D-man, I don’t saw him long term in Montreal because he have so many young defenders. So it he really not a bad thing for the organization to lose him.
And, finally we have a second round pick on top of that, it just some icing on the cake at this point.
So yes it is a incroyable trade

With the prospects that the habs have, the 2-3 year mark is probably when they'll look to start their playoff race anyway. They get a couple of years to see how Laine performs during a time where, if he's a hindrance, it's not that relevant. Then when it starts to matter, they can easily move on from him anyway. Conversely, if he's a boon to the club, they can resign. Frankly getting a 2nd out of this while also freeing up a clogged defensive slot? I barely see this as a risk at all. Solid deal by Kent Hughes and company.

it's a win win for both teams. Columbus gets a young d man and retains 0% of laines salary. As for us, i think it works a little better in our favour. We needed to get rid of a Dman cause we have too many. As much as I didn't want to see Harris go, there had to be a decision made. Also big problem for the Habs was depth scoring, so hopefully Laine is able to help out with that. and if that doesnt work, we still got a 2nd rounder in 26' and even though 8.7 Mil for 2 years is a little steep, its short term. So big Ws for kent and company, as well as for Columbus and Montreal actually having the ability to talk to Laine before making a decision is super generous on Columbus' part.

Even if he's only half decent in his own numbers, it's still a win. His shear presence as a big body sharp shooting threat (on top of being an underatedly good passer) on the powerplay will open up gaps for others to score if he doesn't do it himself. Plus pressure to score will be on him just as on Caufield, Suzuki, Slaf, Roy & Newhook so it alleviates things out for Dach to take things at the right pace for his return and later on with Demidov, Hage, Beck, Kapanen etc when they finally get to make the big jump.

They might actually be able to compete this coming season. The Habs lost 27 games by one goal and this is without having Kirby Dach since he tore his ACL in game 2 of the season. Have a healthy Dach, add in Laine and a young core that is only getting better. Suzuki has grown his point totals 4 straight years and Caufield is getting better every year as well. Plus Slafkovsky's breakout year previously. Add in potentially Hutson and Reinbacher in the back line and the Habs can claw back some of those losses they had by one goal.

Don't believe everything you read, esp. not those coming from a specific reporter just after they've made a bad trade. He's not toxic. Mathieu Perreault who was his teammate for 4 years and is retired and therefore has no reason to sugarcoat, recently said in a podcast that Laine was a great teammate and lockerroom guy. Said that he was funny, but an introvert who didn't go out with the guys on roadtrips (he doesn't drink alcohol). I think it's been alright in Columbus, but tough times for everyone. Bur he let Fantilli live with him, and Fantilli had only good things to say about him. Fantilli didn't come to think of any lockerroom moments that would have made Laine uncomfortable, not with the teammates at least. I do believe though that Laine was in a bad headspace most of the time in Columbus. A lot of injuries and his dad died completely unexpectedly, who he was very close to. And 6 months in the PA program for mental health issues is a long time. He recently told that he's seeing a therapist 3x week. I think he just really needed a fresh start. His contract is the reason he was difficult to trade, plus his injuries. And at a bad time of the year.

As a Habs fan, you are not upper management so you don’t know if the move “makes sense”. Hughes has made only smart moves since he came in, so i will trust his decision making for the moment.
I think he will provide the skill we lack offensively(because it was a bit of a problem last season). He might not have leadership, but this guy has faced many challenges during his career, so he can bestow what he learned to the younger players on the team. He might’ve declined in terms of his production, but we are overlooking the fact that Columbus has been at the bottom of the league for a few years now, so no player will have a great season.
