    Very cool "Adventure Trailer". My favorite feature is that the tent extension/changing room, is on an aluminum frame so the tent floor and you aren't on the ground. That's great and definitely my kind of feature. I mean, that about as much tech as you can throw on an overlander... I like the dude also haha. He's one of the high intensity, not screwing around people of the world. He was exceptional at his job before he retired for sure. Love it. But dude....Sunray 109e...are you kidding me? I think I'm starting to the line more clearly for what kind of features are necessary on the overlanding setups for my personal style.

      Adventure Trailer. You nailed it there. The raised floor was our favorite feature as well. Okay, second favorite. That kitchen was magical. If it only had a galley hatch to cover it, I would be in love. Haha. And yes, he was high intensity. That was a one take walkthrough. He was right on point. No messing around. I'm right with you on the Sunray when you told me the price. I looked up the Facebook used versions in my area yesterday. None were under $12K. You stumbled on a bargain.

      Ok - so I drive 2.5 hours to McAllister Oklahoma to look at the 109e. I even brought my checkbook. The out the door price I have sitting there is $14,500 - that’s all their stupid fees and everything. I didn’t pull the trigger because I need to make sure the house stuff I mentioned doesn’t have any surprises. If it’s there in 2 weeks, I’m going to buy it. They’re pretty slick and a good size. The main thing I would say is ALL the photos make the cargo deck look bigger than it actually is. It’s still functional and everything I want in life, but a hair smaller than I envisioned.

    One thing I've learned while traveling and camping with my wife and daughter this summer using our Runaway RangeRunner towed by an F150 is that having quick access to sleeping quarters, your kitchen/food and your gear is important to keep everyong comfortable and happy; especially when you are tired and pull into a site late and just want to crawl into bed, or when you're between locations during the day to pull over and make a quick lunch.
    The trailer in this video is probably easily pulled into the backcountry and appears to provide many comforts of a full size RV once set up. Everyone has their own idea of adventure and what they want when they are "overlanding". For me this one doesn't make sense.

    • @PlayingwithSticks
      @PlayingwithSticks  9 месяцев назад

      You nailed it there. This is what I was also referring to in the 3 cons section. We currently have a used pop-up trailer for our family while waiting on our other trailer. It feels very limiting at times. But, like you mentioned at other times it can make a great basecamp. I want a camper that can do it all. Not do everything great. Just be able to do most things good and some things great. There are always sacrifices. But for me the more we do this the less I like to sacrifice convenience and ease of setup.

    • @johnjohnson6891
      @johnjohnson6891 9 месяцев назад

      You can go from driving to sleeping in well less than 5 minutes. That includes un hooking, leveling and folding out the tent. To just set up the tent, it’s less than a minute. The tent folds out you snap in two poles and you can go to sleep. Little more time to add the awning if you want it up.

    Interesting setup. I like that the bed is elevated off the ground. That kitchen is pretty nice though it is way more than I have need for. This seems like the go to a spot and stay a few days kind of set up and would be nice for hunters and fishers. The large counter space would make cleaning and field dressing pretty easy.
    It is an expensive and heavy tent.

    • @PlayingwithSticks
      @PlayingwithSticks  9 месяцев назад

      That’s how I envision this tent. A hunters base camp. Or for that person who really wants to get away from it all, keep that feeling of living in a tent, but have some of the amenities from home.

  • @jenniferstewarts4851

    Hey drew. This is the kind of "set up" I like... BUT...
    You can pretty much do it all just with tents. Yes it might take a bit longer to set up... but you can haul it in on a normal trailer, or pull it in on a sleigh. or store it inside the tear drop and set up for a long basecamp at a location...
    that being said, for someone who wants an all in 1 with a pickup tow vehicle, this is a good option if they don't mind not having AC.

      I just wanted to point out that this kind of trailer is not a ‘new thing’; similar trailers have been produced in Australia for more than 60 years, where they are (still) popular as a relatively cheap middle-ground between a tent and a camper trailer and are well-suited to the local climate/environment and off road travel style. Plus, they typically aren’t $60k, you can buy second-hand ones for a few thousand dollars 💵 😊

    Another awesome production Drew. I really enjoy looking at other off-road capable trailer setups. I always hope to see some good ideas that we can use. There is a lot to like about this trailer. It certainly is well suited for larger groups in a compact package and I like several of the innovative features. The cooking features are outstanding but we like to keep things simple when camping; including pulling over just to make sandwiches. Bigger and more complex does not qualify as "the best" in my opinion.
    I noticed a few more outstanding cons. This thing is going to require a lot of level and even ground to set up on. You can level the trailer but how does that help the tent(s) and kitchen... The dry weight is not bad but when would you add the 50 gals of water weighing over 400 Lbs! There was no mention of repair and replacement to the numerous mechanical parts, hinges, fabric, zippers... Last but not least is dealing with all that fabric under real world conditions. It's challenging enough to manage a simple 180 awning. Deploying all that fabric in the wind or rain or in the dark... listening to it flap all night, stowing it wet for travel and moving from place to place. Getting home and having to dry everything out. I'd call it a 1 season setup, best suited for destination camping.
    It's pretty cool, and I liked the tour, but I wouldn't want to own it.

But I like my basic Runaway mini-camper on a good chassis and off-road suspension (Timbrens), like the $60,000 trailer in the video, but mine came in at around $12,000. Lug pattern fits what's on my pickup, so I don't need an extra spare. But I like my basic box on a good chassis and off-road suspension (Timbrens), like the $60,000 trailer in the video, but mine came in at around $12,000. Then add $1000 for shipping to the closest dealership, 1300 miles away, plus another $1000 making the trip down to Arizona. Lug pattern fits what's on my pickup, so I'm not foolin' with an extra spare. I have a spare for the truck, already, and it'll work for the trailer long enough to get to civilization, and I can scavenge from the camper if I get 2 flats. It took 22 weeks for the factory to fulfill my February order, but that's what they told me and that's how long it took them, so they kept their word.
    I got the Runaway Venturist. Basic offroad-capable mini-camper that's just a 6x8x4-foot (wxlxh) box. It's got way more clearance than I'll ever need so I'm thinking about mounting water and fuel tanks underneath. Anyway, as a lifelong pickup-truck camper, I've camped all over the west and northwest of the UsA, so I already know how to camp in all weathers and I have all the kitchen and other stuff I need.
    Camping just got a whole lot better, is all. It starts with being able to bed down without any work, plus you have extra cargo room for more tools and gear. I can set up a cushier camp, and I already had a pretty nice setup. Nothing fancy, but dry and warm.
    The fun/tricky part for me will be making that Florida-centric mini-camper into a 4-season beast! It's basically made for Floridians. Air conditioner came with it, stock. I think their clientele mostly camp at organized camp grounds with RV hookups, i.e., electricity. Air conditioning is a must for that clientele. They've been camping all their lives, but never could escape the heat, and that little sleeper with the AC is like heaven to them! I'm more of an off-grid type camper, though, and I camp North and I camp high, so i won't be running the AC much, but it'll be nice if I travel south in summer.
    I think it'll be more fun modifying a basic camper than buying one with expensive bells and whistles. When I look at this camper, I like the idea, but I'd rather they maximize the cargo room along with that tent idea, and left everything else about camping up to the campers.

    I have questions. I camp in bear country. There are none stop reminders about not cooking, eating or keeping personal items in your tent ( all attract wildlife and a bear did check out someone's tent at a location I love) You are almost cooking in your tent and you are washing in you tent. Am I missing something for bear Country? Then the heating thing, it is fabric, heating it is like heating my home with the windows open. Proper sleeping bags might be a better choice. I like the basic idea and I have seen something less extreme on my travels but couldn't see a brand name that I thought was a great little ( note it was little and simple a car was towing it ). I hope you find one of those and give us a tour

      I don't know what to say about that bear country thing. Even with my hard sided teardrop I sometimes question my galley cooking and attracting bears. I can't imagine how I would feel in something like this. Now in a regular pop-up you feel higher from the ground. Obviously a bear could get up there, but it would probably buy you a little time to get ready. Something like this a bear can get in probably as quick as a tent.

      Just to add some Australian context as I can see a lot of confusion in these comments; these trailers were originally developed as a cheap cross between a tent and a caravan (what US folks call a travel trailer); they have the advantage of being relatively compact and easy to store, cheap to purchase and less complicated/annoying to put up than a full tent set up.
      They’re are also much more capable off-road than bigger fibreglass caravans, which is an important consideration in a place like Australia which is big, empty and consists mostly of unsealed roads. Lightweight but cheaper fibreglass trailers like teardrops are quite uncommon and probably(?) couldn’t handle the rigours of an unsealed bumpy outback road for 2 months, which these smaller tent-trailers (I think they’re just called camper trailers?) could do with ease 👍

    • @ronb6182
      @ronb6182 9 месяцев назад

      Confusion I see none. All I see is opinions for or against building something like this, it doesn't matter what country one lives in all the same you have RV parks that may not let these camp in their parks and you have off road if it's legal. In Florida you are not allowed to camp on the side of the road or on someone's property or even government land. You must camp in a park or your own property. You can get away with having a small trailer and having a tent addition on the side. People have screened porches on their trailers with just the ground for the floor. 73

    • @user-dx6hq6je8v
      @user-dx6hq6je8v 7 месяцев назад

      Fair enough people are just starting their opinions; I want trying to take those away from anyone, just provide an understanding as to why these kinds of trailers exist. And I’m not sure why the country or local context wouldn’t matter? In Australia it’s perfectly normal to see these at RV parks, and the rest of the country is quite empty so there’s plenty of off grid camping opportunities. Granted the off-road caravan market has gotten a lot more diverse in recent years so these aren’t as common as they used to be, but they’re still around 👍

      It’s interesting isn’t it? Very popular in South Africa and Australia. But then you look at the comments here and they seem to not be bought in yet here in the States. • @jimyeats
      @jimyeats 9 месяцев назад

      “Super popular” is still relative. These are small population countries that have much less developed roadway system/maintained roadways to get to popular destinations. Why would someone spend 60k for a tent on a trailer in the US when they can spend 25k on a 16 or 17ft camp trailer that has full enclosure, bathroom, exc exc and still get to 99% of the locations that most people (including the four people who own Kimberly trailers in the US) are actually going.

    Suggestion: A quick overview of this setup would help me understand what I'm looking at. I don't need water intake and brake info, until I have an idea how this looks when set up. I going to Google for info; then come back for all the stats.

      Good point. I was thinking the same thing when watching the video back. I am having a hard time establishing the scene when I film at an Overland event. I get very limited views of the trailer and not as much control and flexibility, over the pacing of the video as I would like. I appreciate the feedback.

    Cool rig, but the camera work made me dizzy. Why can't the cameraman hold still for even ten seconds? I couldn't finish the video.

      @@PlayingwithSticks I have watched tons of your videos, and love them. I think you do a great job. I just found this one hard to watch. I don't understand why the camera is constantly panning in and out. Is it because you think people will get bored if hold a frame for too long?

    500lbs tongue weight on a 2500lb trailer... That's insane, right?
    That would max out my Xterra on tongue weight, even though I could tow literally twice as much total weight. Unless you really needed the off-road features, why not go with a stick and tin, since you're going to need basically a 1/4 ton truck anyways?
    Neat concept though, just needs to weight half as much on the front lol.

    • @PlayingwithSticks
      @PlayingwithSticks  9 месяцев назад

      Yes! At first I thought I was reading it wrong. But, if you look at how this trailer folds out, almost all the trailer in terms of storage and kitchen is in front of the axle. Imagine what it will weigh once you fill up the cargo storage and kitchen boxes! I think this trailer is aimed at someone looking for a tent camping experience, but with a few home amenities. I'm thinking hunters and people who go on long excusions off grid. For your typical camper, this would probably not be what they are looking for.

      It is well thought out.

    Sheesh..........a compressor-driven suspension-levelling system rather than manual leveling jacks? Here's someone who hasn't camped much thinking that complex, heavy and expensive kit is better than light, simple, robust. And if you've slept on anything with suspension, you'll know that turning over at night rocks the vehicle/ trailer, and everyone else sleeping feels it......whereas a pair of corner jacks takes the suspension out of the equation, gets everything level, and ensures stability when fellow campers roll over, or climb out to go for a pee.
    The storage boxes are incredibly poorly designed, wasting most of the volume with the silly lid design.
    The whole thing is huge, heavy, overly complex, and frivolous.
    The worst thing of all? That price is ridiculous. It's obviously aimed at rich caravanners who like to pretend they are caravanning.

    Big NOPE. The tongue weight on a camper that weight should only be around 325 lbs +/- The wheels need to be moved. And at $60K there are a about a dozen other campers I would rather have in this weight range (Most cost less) I would challenge the idea this is the "best available kitchen" While it does have a lot of features and counter space it doesn't look the most ergonomic I have seen. Just my 2 cents.

      You are absolutely right. I try to not be a broken record. I figure if people are truly in the search for a camper, they probably don't want to hear me same the same things over and over. So I try to expand upon some of the pros and cons in each video. And how dare you call it a tent! Haha. You know from the title, what I was expecting people would say. That was just me having a bit of fun. But, also acknowleding that this really isn't a tent. This has more features than most campers we highlight on the channel.
