Always wanted one of these, came pretty close on two, never thought to look them up on YT till now - prettier on vid than in pics. Lovely bike mate - enjoy it!
I have owned one of these for 42 years I bought it new. I have had suffered broken gearbox selector forks twice. The gearbox is very poor. The ignition switch barrel fills with rainwater. The battery charging system is not up to the job. I spent most of the 1980's push starting it. I have fitted a 380W Suzuki GS1000 alternator from Nippon Denso. Otherwise it has been a love affair!!
I had a mate who owned one of these for a short time in the late 1970s. He also owned a 250 Desmo MK III at one time. His bikes were always second hand. He never kept anything for any length of time and I can't recall which sequence his bike progression was now. I never rode it but I recall he kept up well enough although he was never enamoured of it affected on an emotive and aesthetic level by its absence of Ducati V twin 'character' and lack of layperson kudos street appeal. Don't know what the mechanicals were like reliability or longevity wise. None of the parallel Ducati 500s were popular in AU. Do wish now that I'd taken the opportunity to ride one in the day if only for comparative eval.
Remembering the time, they were only around in the shops for a12-18 month period. They were never popular. A friend had one for a short while. I never rode it so IDK why other than they were an oddity not in the traditional V twin Ducati style. I had a 450 Desmo single at the time, and no way did it produce near the power of that 500 twin, although I never had any problem keeping with him in the twisties, especially downhill. Here in AU, (records available due the records of Ducati's AU SLI Frasers M/C), a total of only 227 500 Sport Desmos were ever imported. To put that in perspective, AU was also Ducati's largest export market during the 1970s.
Complimenti ottimo restauro! Io ne ho una identica di mio padre e vorrei restaurarla. Possiamo metterci in contatto per consigli.Grazie anticipatamente

Never too old, Sir. I'm 65 with bed knees and I'm 0:07 still happiest on just two wheels. I know plenty of folks senior to me still biking.

The engines are hand grenades a xs 650 Yamaha engine slots in with not much trouble, more power with bullet proof reliability.
