I started a response to a viewer going on about teachers then decided to make my retort stand alone. It amazes me how people always go on about teachers and their wages. This strike is regarding education SUPPORT workers within the CUPE union. These are EAs (education assistants - the ones who deal with children of varying special needs - physically, developmentally, behaviourally so they can be in school), DECEs (designated early child educators - who are a necessary support for kindergarten teachers now that the government crams over 30 little ones in the classroom), Librarian Techs, IIT Techs, Custodians, Office Administrators (the glue of any school) and Maintenance/Facilities Personel. By the way, many of these people are not given full-time hours. Some, such as EAs and DECEs are expected to prepare for students without the prep time given to teachers. Prep time was on the negotiation table - adamantly shot down by Lecce. CUPE reached out to the Minister of Education 5 months ago to start negotiating contracts. This is all on Ford and Lecce. At the time that I saw this clip from Social Bill 28 - Keep Kids In School Act containing the Not With Standing clause had already been passed. Aren't you the least bit curious how Bill 28 was so quickly available and hastily passed through. Bills never get passed quickly. This is Ford attempting to cripple unions which he utterly disdains. This is how autocrats always work - start with the least/most vulnerable saturated in propaganda so the unknowing, good people like yourself, buys into it. By the time the Autocrat gets to their ultimate goal of power and control they've done great damage and everyone becomes trapped. A lot of Trumpism going on these days.

    • @janetedwards6236

Lack of ft hours and larger classroom sizes are mostly due to union demands making staff more expensive!!! These people are NOT vulnerable, they can leave if they don't like the pay. You talk about the government's behavior but If holding people's future hostage till you get your own way is not a power trip, I don't know what is. Unions are out of control, they drive up inflation and taxes, while fostering a culture of greed and entitlement. 2.5 yearly raises is more than fair, anything more than that is GREED plain and simple!!1

You know who else is included in this group that makes $39000 per year, the thankless job of health care workers! The same healthcare workers that worked endlessly through a pandemic and are still trying to get through without adequate staffing and fair wages but also facing abuse of the general public, like we asked for a pandemic! The rise of inflation is taking a toll on a lot of people in Canada who are trying to make ends meet and I totally stand by and support teachers who are also doing a thankless job and do not get paid what they are worth.

    • @nancythomas2193

Thank you for your support. Ford and his ministers are the ones who have placed Ontario in a health and education crisis. Ford tramps on everything sacred including protected green space he has just given away. He is all about the almighty dollar. Human rights be damned. Ford has only animosity toward unions and would do a jolly jig if he could trample them all down. I was aghast at what they pulled on health care providers during the pandemic. You all are our unsung heros. Ford and Lecce where reaponsible for all the times the schools closed during the pandemic but Lecce is making it sound like it was educators. Bolder dash! At the last contract Ford pushed thru a bill then, too, capping the wage increase of public employees at 1%. It's amazing how there is money in the coffers for all the MPPs to vote themselves a nice big raise. I think it was 10% which amounts to $16,000.00 per person. What gets to me regarding this round of negotiations is that Ford never intended to negotiate. Using the notwithstanding clause shows just how undemocratic Ford is. This strike is beyond just wages now. It's about human rights and democracy.

Ok so why are government workers treated on a pedestal ??? No one cares if your an 2 year community college diploma and BA ECE worker ! ALL women are underpaid no matter what in life in general and the system knows this . The men aren’t getting any better when they leave a mother and children behind and play the mental card as a life line for themselves . Women are super underrated we still live like the 1900s the rules , daycare, policies , zero work life balance preferably for women and lack of raises and discrimination with zero competency in changing laws and social policies and zero support in workplaces only to still be treated like an 18 year old at work . As women age and have children and lack of flexibility and as women living in ONLY a patriarchal economy and system that’s built upon them nothing really helps us except to remain like a single bachelor and stay away from being a real family instead now the new trend for women is be DINKS which is “dual income no kids” life so throw ur embryos and reproductive systems and hormones to have kids and deliver in the garbage is what Canada is built upon. Zero respect all these years towards Blacks, Indigenous. Ignoring key issues and main facts in and around women and there health and well being and lack of dwellings to live in or options and areas to move to be safe and have enough employment is slacking heavily. Why does Canada act like USA as if we deal with way more populations and we sure as heck for a small nation with lots of green space and restricting Northern Ontario if resources , funding etc where women would most likely go to due to affordability etc and major lifestyle changes to make things work is not working in Canada. Is this Government pretending ? Women in Scandinavian and some European countries are way more happier no matter what happens compared to North America. Why are we not learning anything from them. Employment opportunities with higher income is just not an option for the many women we are still eating Ketchup (playing catch-up) 🤦🏽‍♀️ . What do they expect women to do? With such limited understanding and tuition fees rising ? And we are always displayed as caregivers . The nursing sector proves it as an example and the teaching sector . Feminine dominated fields. Poor us.

    1) You shouldn't be talking about a "surplus" if you don't fully understand the full picture of the financial health of the province, including the balance sheet. That surplus is over a 12 month period. The province is sitting in an accumulated 237 billion dollar DEFICIT. Therefore that 2 billion dollar surplus isn't "extra money the province is sitting on." It has to flow to the balance sheet to cover the accumulated debt. We would have to earn 2 billion dollar per year for approximately 118 years to get out of debt.
    2) CUPE workers get paid during the strike. In fact, Laura Walton (CUPE President) said they get paid more during a strike.
    3) These workers get paid on average $39,000 per year but don't work for 3 months. They collect EI or can get another job. This equates to $28/hour. There would be people lined up to make $28/hour as a secretary, and janitor. I respect these professions but that is a lot of money/hour for those jobs.
    4) You should have someone on the panel to present the opposing argument.
    5) Cynthia - to say that $3.25 per hour isn't a lot is financially irresponsible. In the private sector, if employees demanded $3.25/hour raise, most companies would go bankrupt. In the public sector such as the government, we just go further into an accumulated DEFICIT. Do you understand the repercussions of this for future generations?
    6) I do agree that it is problematic to take away workers rights to strike. It is an unfortunate situation for everyone involved, especially the kids who are our future and haven't been educated for two years and counting.

Striking on off time gets no attention. What they are striking for is very important. People think that janitors don’t deserve more than minimum wage but they are wrong. The janitors keep the schools clean, the education assistant kelps kids in classrooms. If you are working a full work week, you deserve a living wage. And a living wage means that you are not worried about how you will pay rent and feed your kids.

yeah right, like in the great and wondrous USA? Where the rich send their kids to the best private schools ... and the middle and lower income folks have to send theirs to the low quality under-funded public schools. See how well that's working out for the state of American education.

This was lecce plan 2 years ago. Wants private school. If you believe this is the solution you are grossly out of touch with affordability. Private school at a bare minimum is 20k per year. I would guess that less than 20% of Canadian parents could afford that even at a reduced tax bracket

    • @Sarena88ca
      @Sarena88ca Год назад

@@cc-ij7cr I do understand that most parents cannot afforded private schools. Parents can hardly afford kids, should they have children, if they cannot provide the best? The changes the Conservatives are proposing are dangerous for Ontario, people still chose not to vote, they accepted the status quo. Now they are complaining about the idiots they left in charge.

@@Sarena88ca So to be clear, are you arguing FOR the shutting down of our public education system? If so, that's not going to happen anytime soon (most Ontarians like our tax-funded system). I fully agree that Ford's trying to break unions.... he seems to be following in the footsteps of Mike Harris, another anti-union and autocratic premier. I also agree we need to step up and fight for our rights, e.g., collective bargaining and the right to withhold labour. If you're arguing for getting rid of public schools, how does that fit with your apparent support for workers' (in this case education workers) rights?

Quite the contrary. You must be fine with our kids being skimmed on by the government to line their coffers? I think the children are worth every bit of investment. Make no mistake an investment for workers to live is an investment for our kids to be properly educated in a healthy environment.

You're right. They don't give a damn about children and parents. "They" meaning Ford, Lecce and this government. They had one job to do since they were reelected, that's keep the kids in school and "get them caught up in their learning" as the taxpayer-funded multi-million dollar gov't ad campaign promises ad nauseum. So Ford and Lecce... get back to the collective bargaining table and do your job!!

Do you mean pension plan? It's not free. Employees pay into it and the local school board employer contributes. Not all pensions are equal either. Besides, this has now gone beyond the issue of wages. It is now a human rights and democracy fight. Ford via Lecce has purposely set this whole situation up. If they were really interested in negotiating it could have been done during the summer. Ford is a millionaire doing his utmost, along with like minded people, to totally do away with the middle class. Have you not noticed how the gap has grown between the upper and lower classes? Economically it is very trying times for everyone except the millionaires.
