Another way to express you're fine, not doing particularly well, not bad either is "vai-se andando", "vai-se indo" (or using the first person "vou indo/andando"). It kind of gives the idea of "I'm going and managing it as things/life comes". You can also add this at the end of those more negative responses just to mean you don't really feel like talking about it, don't need help, you're managing it. "Já estive melhor" (I've been better) is also a way to express you're not doing so well.
I’m new here and I just saw the video (with very good explanations) 👌🏻 But the first thing I thought was actually the “vai/se andando” answer. Continue the good work 🙏🏻
This is great. My son in Portugal texts me every morning “Tudo bem?” I always answer the same because I’m just starting to learn Portuguese. I used your video and went old fashion on this by making flash cards to help me answer. Your videos are great… thanks.
Happy birthday! Great options! I think a very Portuguese response is "vai-se andando" though, especially this year. Essentially akin to "How's it going?" "It's going" We're not the most effusive of people, but this one works in every setting, while actually saying you're not doing well is more for people you're close with.
Amazing content As a portuguese living in Lisbon, i imediately subscribed! I don't even need it, but I still watch your videos.
WOW! Came here for some convo opening tips and just wanna say that's crazy you were celebrating almost 6k subs at this time, 1.5 years ago, and now you've grown 40k more!
Hi Liz! This is a rather useful video, especially for those whose mother tongue is English. I discovered you while watching one of Leo's videos about the differences between European and Brazilian Portuguese. I am chuffed to see that there are great teachers in Lisbon, who teach and promote our language. You do something that I would not be able to do: you make European Portuguese easy and accessible.
I'm such a beginner and stumbled onto your channel. This has been such a great video. Our family is planning on moving, so you're such a refreshing change from other channels! Cheers!
Your videos are amazing!!! Finally I am learning how to properly speak and reply in Portuguese! So important for me, so I can speak to my family in Portugal
Just wanted to thank you for your great videos. Just last week returned from spending 6 days with family touring Porto, Aveiro, and Lisboa, and finally was able to have conversations!
My wife and I are digging your channel. We are coming for a visit in November and scouting out where we’d like to live. Thank you so much for your efforts teaching through this channel!
I have been using .... (sorry) Duolingo for the last month. My partner speaks European Portuguese and I have a good friend who is Brazilian. It has been driving my partner nuts. Last night we were going through youtube videos about Portugal, we hope to visit later this year, and we found your video "I wish I'd known before moving to Portugal" My partner laughed about the Bureaucracy and needing patience, something he struggled with when he lived there for a while. From this video we went onto another one about not saying Sim and he was impressed by your pronunciation etc. I have now subscribed, worked through 3 videos today and am now going to look at your pro course. AND no more Duolingo! Thank you for your fun approach. I am feeling excited about restarting this language journey! Obrigada
Are you from Portugal? Because you speak european portuguese perfectly! I'm from Brazil and I loved your videos even though they are for english speakers😆
I am so excited to find your channel, Liz! We are currently touring Portugal to see where we eventually want to buy a home and your videos have been so wonderfully helpful! You are awesome ❤❤❤
Olá, Liz. I just discovered your channel. I have been learning Brazilian Portuguese, but I plan to move to Portugal in two years and your videos are helping me transition to European Portuguese. You're doing a great job with these videos-thank you for making them.
How weird... I just popped to the local post office where we have an apartado and was thinking I must find something different to say to the postmistress other than como está? I was actually going to use Tudo bem! Then I come home and check your channel and all the answers are there waiting for me. I can't wait to try one of your suggestions next time.. That said, other Portuguese people I know say a typical response is 'mais ou menos' and then joke about how the portuguese love to talk about all their problems. I have only said it to people I know really well as it always seems to provoke a laugh when a foreigner uses what they see as a very typical portuguese response of a portuguese person ready to bemoan all their problems - otherwise I don't think I would dare use it.
You're a life saver Liz. I spent months learning Portuguese only to realize I'm doing it all wrong. And then I found you, you're amazing at what you do. Wish I'd found u sooner.
I'm learning more english with you, hearing you explain my own language than I can do with some english teachers here in Brasil (YES, WITH "S" NEVER WITH "Z", but the sound is exactly the same). Besides, I'm learning a few of Portugal's portuguese yet. (Am I correct? Does it's sounds like a native english speaker, or a native would never say things that way?)
Seriously, l came across your videos on RUclips today, and your explanations are very understanding. I am from a country in West Africa, but now in Mozambique. Its really difficult living here because of the language barrier. I need your help to understand Portuguese better and faster. Am waiting for your respond.
Hi Keenan!! Good for you I’ve yet to try my Portuguese with someone, but I can watch movies, tv series and sing Portuguese songs so I take it I’m not doing too bad myself.
Afaik in the region of Portugal I live, Braga, in the north the normal one to say, in the case of being in a hurry is "Esta tudo bem? Sim tudo, mas tou com pressa." the one you suggested "tou atarefado" is not usually used, perhaps in the south is different, I don't know.
Oi Liz! Estou em Lisboa! Hope all is well with your newborn! I will be using Tudo otimo this week once my jet lag is done. 🤣 Tou fixe as well.

- Menos mal. (something like Not so bad, mas é engraçado, não sei bem porquê. É uma construção que parece errada e ao mesmo tempo soa super certa.
Metropolitan Portuguese rocks! While dropping the suffix "Es" in "Estou", I would have written it as 'Tou just to enphasize that the suffix was dropped. Just like in English we can use "I am" or "I 'm".
I'm just starting to learn Portuguese, and it sounds sometimes so much like a combination of Spanish and Hungarian, or even a Slavic language. That's just pronunciation and not grammar as far as I know, but it's really interesting sound-wise.
