What You NEED to Know for Dealing with a Dead Car Battery: Alfa Owner Experience

  • Here's a brief video detailing the exact issue I experienced on my 2019 Alfa Romeo Giulia one evening when I was returning from vacation on Memorial Day weekend. The battery on the vehicle died for no apparent reason, and after having the car jump started by road side assistance, the vehicle engine stop/start wouldn't function for three days. After three days, the whole vehicle drove like normal as if nothing happened. I'm not sure what made the battery on the vehicle die within a 48 hour period, as I didn't have any lights on and nothing was plugged-in inside the car. Let me know in the section below if this has happened to you with your Alfa, Fiat, or Maserati and what the root cause was. I hope you enjoy the video!

Just happened to my Giulia last weekend. Started the car and the dash lit up like a Christmas tree. Every possible warning appeared - start/stop unavailable, no indicators, no reverse lights, no parking sensors, no front collision warning, no climate control, no fuel gauge etc. Let the car rest for an hour and all errors except stop/start cleared. Taken the car to the dealership since and they diagnosed a bad battery. Just had it replaced and picking the car up today. Apparently not uncommon. Good luck with yours...

@@lord7739 it’s not a problem, it is normal. To fix the “problem” It is enough to fire the engine, turn the steering wheel all the way right, move the car, then all the way left, move the car and then back to the straight position. Switch off the car, wait 5 seconds and switch on the car again.

I hear that if the battery charge percentage drops below 70%, the auto start/stop feature becomes disabled to save some battery life.
Right then you would know I guess or at least it would be a good indicator to check on the battery.
One more thing, make sure to check for any rust on the battery terminals in the trunk, if there is corrosion it might prevent the battery from charging correctly and in turn drains the battery faster then usual, cheers.

I just replaced the battery 3 months ago and ran into this exact same issue yesterday. Even after jumping the car, all the lights still come on and the key fob doesn’t work unless I place it in the center armrest compartment. Will have the battery checked today.

Very helpful guys as mine is sitting on the drive at this moment completely dead after an identical experience. Start stop disappears, then multiple, more and more warning lights and then it won’t start at all, kicks back the brake when you try to start it, then it won’t turn off warning lights at all and finally dies. At least I think I know what the fix is going to be. Thanks a lot!

Happend to my wife last week, when she was just off for a long ride. Our dealer got the car in an charged the batteri. Said all was ok. Happend again next day, and She ordered a service at a dealer where She was heading 500 km away from home. She was afraid of going to the toilet on the trip, stopping the car U know 🤪 The workshop there tok a "stresstest" and comfirmed the batteriet was broken . They put in a new one on warrany, and we were happy since that 👍 Good luck with yours lovely Guilia. Best regards Odd Atle, Norway

I tried to start it again later same day but there was no response after I’ve pressed start stop button , I bought a new battery but car wasn’t starting right away , I had to wait at least 15 seconds with pedal pressed, to start the car . This morning car wont start at all , the dash lights up, but no response when I press start button

I had my first battery go flat in my 2015 Giulietta QV. I had a workshop deliver and fit the new battery, when I took it for a drive it had some fail lights stay on, however when I started it the next day they had all reset, apparently this is common. Also, it turned out that the connection to the battery positive wasn't fully secured because on the 2nd day after the battery was replaced, the car did not accelerate from traffic lights, it was doing all sorts of weird things and would barely move...thank goodness I had a spanner to fully tighten the terminal...so if the terminal isn't fully tightened and it moves a little when driving, you will have all the different warnings come up and systems shut down...

Happened to my Giulia 2.0 of January 2017 too. Battery is not the problem but somehow the battery is not charged fully or there is a drain current. Or a combination of those 2. It happens after a long trip (strange enough) without using brakes often when the battey looses capacity till 40%. Or 1x completely was empty after staying a certain time. Probably the IBS sensor gives a wrong charged value of the battery according to road service man. The IBS says battery is full whilst it is charged only circa 40%. He disconnected the IBS sensor from battery. Now with diconnection it functoins much better. But still sometimes the signal in display appears with 'check engine' and 'start stop defect '. Have to find out with Alfa-Romeo in Italy what it is. Because Alfa dealers connotatie solve this problem yet. By the way: many Toyota's (Prius, Corolla) have start problems because of flat battery. Also German and other modern cars have problems with the IBS sensor. A pits because the Giulia's are further very reliable.

Engine light, start stop, and sound system still disabled 12 hours later; other lights (Power steering, ECS, Collision Avoidance etc went off after I was able to run the car and restart it). What was the temperature that day? The cold weather can drain the battery to dead, I’ve had that issues with my 2017 Camry, 2010 Nissan Sentra in the last winter when the temp dropped below 20 deg F

    • @BornToDriveOfficial
      @BornToDriveOfficial  5 лет назад

The temperature dropped from 70 deg F during the day to about 54 deg F when I found that the battery was dead. So it wasn’t too cold. Maybe that was enough of a temperature drop to cause the battery to die though.

I have 2017 Veloce (which is Q4 Ti in USA)
I had a problem with start stop system unavailable warning several times during the year. Dealer said it is a battery problem so in December they replace the battery. Two weeks ago I experience the same " Christmas tree" problem you had. I call my road assistance. They started the car, diagnose all failures, reset it and it looks like all good.
The guy from road assistance said that the battery got 3 volt so it was dead.. I told him that it is brand new. He checked the alternator and said that is giving not enough power to battery and that by dealer it needs to be replaced or reprogrammed.
I didn't have time last week to go to the dealer and yesterday I got start stop unavailable again.
I noticed that this failure appear always after I want to turn high beams while auto lights are on.
This week I will go to dealer so I am curious what they will do.

@@rwdplz1 the problem was in the head light. They replace it and problem was solved.
There was a defect on the parabolic mirror in the head light unit. The diagnosis never showed this issue. I didn't notice that there is any problem. But the mechanic discovered that by accident when his colleague flashed the high beam. Left beam was slightly slower. Sometimes happened that the mirror didn't get back to default position and that drained the battery.

Have you had any issues with the alarm going off for no apparent reason? Mine would go off in heavy rain or strong winds. This would drain the battery. It is a known problem that your dealer can fix in a hour or so. I’ve had no electrical issues since it was fixed.

After watching this video it seems there is an issue that's too common. I"m not a happy camper right now as this is a time waster for me, I need a reliable car every day. These cars are still too finicky, their history is rearing it's ugly head where people had nothing but problems back in the 70's Soo disappointed.
