🥶 🧊 Refrigerator Won't Cool or Freeze After Power Loss? - Possible Fix!

  • I have a GE refrigerator / freezer that stopped cooling and freezing after a power loss. We were gone on vacation around Christmas, and came back to a breaker that had tripped due to a thunderstorm. I reset the breaker, and the refrigerator lamp came back on, but the compressor would never run.
I thought for sure it was a compressor issue. However, I cold not locate any type of reset switch. This particular model is a GE GTS18XC. I purchased it in 2006. Due to the age, I assumed the worst and decided not to have it repaired.
A few weeks later, I decided to give it one more shot. It had been unplugged for a long time. I plugged it back in, tried turning the thermostat to zero, still no luck.
In one last ditch effort, I started messing around with the temperature control inside the fridge. I noticed something that appeared to be a switch. I pushed up on it, heard a slight click, and viola! The compressor kicked on and it is once again cooling.
I honestly am not sure if what I pressed was in fact a switch, but whatever it was, everything is working fine now.
Again, my model is a GE GTS18XC and this happened after a power outage. Let me know in the comments if this video helps how. How did you get your refrigerator to cool again? What model do you have?

I pushed that button a few times and nothing happened. Then I accidentally flicked it with my fingernail and the compressor started!!!! Thank you so much!! I was dreading the thought of calling my landlord!!

Hell yeah! Thank you for this video! We had just loaded up the freezer with groceries when the compressor stopped, but light was still on. Unplugging and turning thermo down and then reversing after a few minutes did nothing, so then tried this. Heard the click and everything came back on! Amazing. Thank you.

Thank you. We used a screwdriver in the hole and turned the button and it reset immediately. We left ours down for a week after a power outage. Our refrigerator is a Kenmore.

Came across your video after my fridge went out due to a possible outage while we were away for Thanksgiving! I didn't find the same switch (I have a Whirlpool side by side), but I did turn the fridge temp to off and when it clicked on, it started running! Going to give it a day to see if it cools properly, fingers crossed! Thank you for your video! Saved some $$$ with a simple fix!

Thanks. Your solution didn’t work but it led me to a similar one. That switch isn’t a button, it’s a dial without a knob, if whacking it or pushing it doesn’t work, wedge a screw driver into the hole and turn it. That worked for me.
Oh, mine also happened after a 48 hour power outage.

    • @theopinionmachine606
      @theopinionmachine606 8 месяцев назад

@@petermutale7787 I heard an immediate engagement. Aka, there was a click, then the compressor motor started. Obviously it takes some time to cool down & get to the the right temperature inside, but you should notice something happen.
      Like turning on a switch.

According to one of the things I saw, that part, the defrost timer, might have just gotten stuck, or might be starting to go bad. You can replace the part.

We had a power outage and the power surge must have hurt the defrost thermostat. We hired a repairman to figure out the issue, and once the defrost thermostat was changed, everything started working normally again.

Sounds like the defrost timer. My fridge is not working either after a power outage. Tried turning the defrost timer with a screwdriver and still not working. I'm thinking I have to replace the timer or the refrigerator. Mine is a 20 yr old GE bottom freezer and looks new.

I have the GE side by side refrigerator with LED panel and ice/water dispenser. If the power goes out, and it does a fair amount of the time, the unit turns off and everything defrosts and randomly starts itself up again. I cannot find the mystery switch and all the front LED lights go dark while the compressor and other items are inoperable. Anybody here know the secret with this type of set up?

@@obinwafrancis28 wait 5 hours and see if it magically just comes back on like mine did i have no explanation....... i tried turning all the breakers off, pulling it out and unplugging and plugging back in, etc. etc. i think maybe the defroster just had to cycle....... literally while i was already in bed 5 hours later i heard it just power back on really loud since it had to cool way back down and it's been fine since?????
