We've been running a Forgotten Realms campaign using the Pathfinder 1e rules for over 10 years now. We sometimes switch DMs with each other and it's been working out great. We also gestalt the classes because of the lack of players and that has rounded out the characters more and made the challenges less impossible for a group of 2, sometimes 3 players. It's been the most fulfilling system I've ever played. And my experience is similar to yours. However, it might also be that you are a good DM and your players are great to play with that plays a huge factor in your enjoyment.

Pathfinder and the the eternal 3rd edition is my favourite ttrpg.
I have so much content with 3rd ed Ebberon books, 3rd edition Faerun book(best version of that setting in my opinion), pathfinder(Golarion is a great setting), Freeport(green ronin), Southlands(Kobold press) and so much more with adventure paths and other 3rd party content creators.
The system is crunchy, but by god, it's polished, and frankly, it's fun to be able to build almost anything you can imagine.
With pdfs, everything is available to buy forever and that's awesome(although i chase print editions whenever possible). I do dabble in other systems, starting at late in D&D 2nd edition, but honestly, i will likely always be tied to 3rd ed and pathfinder as it's final form as it were 😄

We stick to Faerun 3 and 3.5 source books along with Pathfinder 1e and some per-approved 3.5 dnd books. Seems to work out great. Also playing around with Hyborian Age adventures using Pathfinder and about to try Steampunk merged with Call of Cthulhu using Pathfinder 1e rules. Looking forward to experimenting with that. I agree with your take on Pathfinder 1e.

True, pathfinder 1e is the pinnacle of the D20 systems in my mind. Fixes all the issues 3.5 had and feels more satisfying than 5e, which while great for simple and quick games, doesn’t have anything really deep to enjoy, like the magic items. Money feels useless in 5e

Exactly! I ditched D&D 4E after 15 minutes of browsing the PHB for the first time, and 5E has not impressed me. Pathfinder 1E (plus my House Rules document) is the best version of D&D available. Though I did nick the concept of Milestone Levels from 5E. I will admit that's easier than keeping track of XP.

I'd add one more reason: The (free!) online PFSRD for PF1e. Hands down the best resource I have found in 40 years of TTRPG experience. Its robust hyperlinking, search, and layout features (and also source references) make it invaluable for mid-session look-ups and piecing together what might seem like bloat if it were any other game. And it's a handy companion to the core books for a GM trying to build encounters, settings, or campaigns.

As my favorite system of all time, I can see a lot of good in 1e...
But some of my top picks Monsters: the parity of monster, templates out the wahzoo, telling you to just add class levels to certain monsters! It all feels really nice. 5e, even 2e, monsters feel far more arbitrary, lack the wealth of templates. And for 5e monsters feel more samey despite Pathfinder having so many shared mechanics... Maybe because they simply have less?
The variety of actions. Sure, maybe 2e has it beat on variety of actions, but the fact that almost everything can aid another, bull rush, coup de grace, delay, dirty trick, disarm, drag, feint, fight defensively, grapple, overrun, ready an action, reposition, steal, sunder, total defence, trip, tumble, and likely more... And there are rules for it! It's great... This sort of goes with player monster parity, I suppose.
Content! Maybe the biggest draw. Backwards compatible (with minor tweaks) to 3.x D&D, add in all the books to Pathfinder you could play every day of your life and run into something new every session... It is crazy and would be baffled by anything that out-contents it. There is just so much to explore!

My home group is finishing up Book 2 of Tyrant's Grasp this weekend and after six years of playing APs in Pathfinder 1E, still seem to be having a blast. I keep asking them if they want to try anything else, but they keep saying they're enjoying 1E. Once you get comfortable with the system and the rules, it really is an almost infinitely customizable version of D&D.
On the content side - as the "Librarian" for our local PFS lodge during the 1E organized play days before Covid, I still have all the printed out scenarios from Seasons 0 thru 10 - well over 200 separate 4-hour adventures spanning the first decade of Pathfinder. So even if I somehow ran all 24 APs (fat chance of that happening) and the dozen or so modules I own, I still have the PFS library to fall back on. So I could go a decade or two without buying anything new and still have content for my home group.....

Jess Montgomery makes a really good point. Another HUGE advantage of PF1 is the staggering amount of exceptional 3rd party products made for it; Freeport, all Midgard products (including Southlands), the perilous vistas series, the Lost Lands, the mythic companion books from Legendary games and so much more. All these companies have switched their products to 5e and in my opinion PF2 suffers greatly from it. My friends and me have so many of these products and we don't regret buying them.

There is a 'class' in one of the psionic books for 3.5 edition that lets you slowly pick up Illithid like abilities, and that should be a good starting point for such a corruption (if I can ever get my lazy butt up and actually do it, that is, especially now since a certain game has made Mind Flayers popular 😅)

I'm personally more interested in PF1e because of my experience playing Wrath of the Righteous and Neverwinter Nights 2. Some of the stuff I've heard that's different in 2e seems to deviate too much from what I'm used to. I'm sure a lot of other people are interested in 1e because of Kingmaker and WOTR.

I was wondering if you ever tried Dreamscarred Presses Ulitmate Psionics. It actually creates Psionic Classes for characters including spells, magic items, powers etc. Some of them kind of have the same class names as in Occult Adventures, but I think Ultimate Psionics is truer to 2nd AD&D with 3rd edition rules. Great video and I invested to much in Pathfinder 1e to go to another system now, unless it's in a different genre.

Honestly I’m going back to the d20 system because I’m so bored with 5e. I like Pathfinder and DnD 3.5’s prestige classes where you have to earn and plan for that specialization. Weapons feeling different.
And also just the sheer variety of books for the d20 system. You have access to Conan the Barbarian books, Pathfinder, World of Warcraft and DnD3.5 all can be used together with minimal effort.

Ha, I would consider 'Mechanically rewarding' as a negative. Anyone who is new to the game will have a much harder time than someone who knows all of the twists and turns in the mechanics. GURPS is my go to, as the mechanics are very simple (if overly detailed when you dig into the optional rules). There isn't any gotchas or deep understanding of feat trees you need to know.

My big issue with pathfinder in general is that the "variety" offered by it is contextualized by the rules being designed in such a way that every time you do something that's not in your character page (e.g: combat maneuvers, fainting, hitting with a different part of your weapon, having a pet, using insults to grab a bad guys attention, setting traps, or anything creative really.) Then you cannot do it. My most infuriating one is wild shape. You can turn into a earth elemental and you do not gain the ability to earth glide like an elemental, instead you can use your rock hands to dig by RAW. The shifter class is an even bigger mess. The class that's supposed to be the paladin to the druid's cleric and it honestly so limiting its embarrassing. How is the base druid a better wild shaper than the shifter druid who specializes in wild shaping? Like, how is a shifter only able to shift into their animal forms that are previously selected instead of the freedom druid has? Why is it limited to animals unlike druid? Why can't fighters who are combat masters need to pick up a feat for unarmed combat or basic combat maneuvers like grabbing, pushing, or pulling. Game balance? If your game balance implies that you need to invest heavily into a specific thing to not feel neutered while doing it is just the worst way to pitch the whole "lots of options" thing. Like, of course there's lots of options, you can't do anything without that optional, elusive, and unnecessary feat/feat tree. Whirlwind attack (spinning in a circle with the pointy part facing away from you is a 3 feat investment. Dodge, mobility, Whirlwind attack. Why? No reason, game would be too fun without all these minor inconveniences they put in your way just to sell you the solution to the problems they made. My time playing pathfinder has been really fun and all the enjoyment came from the people I play with. The game itself I cannot stand.
