  • In this video, we restore this pair of vintage Red Wing work boots. The owner gave them to his son (who's in his fifties), and his son wants to give them a completely new look. This pair of Red Wing boots goes from being worn and tired looking to clean and fresh with a new look.

That is a model 204. (Replaced by model 202 in the late 90s.) It had a “Supersole”. The I t’s a blown urethane and Red Wind 100% can resole them at the factory.
The sole has a resoled by putting it back onto the same injection molding machine that soled them t originally. The key is to catch it and have the resole done before the hook welt is eaten into too far.
You do great work. And this is a great example. Just chiming in based on having actually worked for red wing and had several such boots personally resoled.

Thanks for letting us know. These just look like the same construction as several in the WORX line. I'm was just reading on their site, they don't recraft WORX or Irish Setters.

I used to manage a Red Wing store and can tell you that Red Wing will resole any of the Super Sole/2.0 line with the direct attach to welt construction. They have a bit longer of a turn around time than traditional soles, though. All our local cobblers hated the direct attach because of the gumming issue.

Yeah, we were mainly talking about many of the waterproof work boots by Red Wing. People email us about them all the time saying that Red Wing won’t resole them and asking if we will. Those are the ones we won’t do.

I'm not trying to pee on your boots and tell you it's raining. I have always worn the Red Ring 402 9-inch boot. I have at least a dozen of them that I have send back to Red Wing and they resole them put new laces and the cushion all for $130.00 mind you that price was before COVID. I still wear the 402 Red Wing and I'll continue too. I sent one pair back to them and they couldn't fix them, so they told the store to give me a NEW PAIR FREE! I like your videos. I have always had good service and good customer service with Red Wing.

But interesting fact, I was able to send them back to Redwing through our local store and they can pull that sole off and remold one back on. I went with the “snake sole” pattern which as I understand it is the same material as this original super sole but with a neat pattern in the bottom. If you haven’t seen it check it out. Still waiting on the boots to come back from RW. 🤞🏼

We’ve been receiving quite a few comments stating that Red Wings will resole all of their boots. As we mentioned in the video, Red Wing does not resole some of their boots, which is why many folks email us frequently asking if we can. What we were trying to get across, as badly as we may have done, is that some of their boots technically cannot be resoled. They are a major pain to do so, and that’s why many cobblers, AND RW, will not resole some of them. Obviously, the boots we resoled ARE able to be resoled or we wouldn’t have done them. 😉Again, I think we just did a bad job of explaining which boots they won’t do…nor will most cobblers.
We copied this directly from Red Wings website…
CAN ALL BOOTS MADE BY RED WING SHOE COMPANY BE REPAIRED?
This depends on how the boots were made. Any boots made using welt construction can be repaired, pending any excessive wear and tear. Not all Red Wing, WORX or Irish Setter boots can be resoled.

Just got a pair of vintage 1980s Red Wings 710 boots at the thrift store for $1. Brown leather moc toe with Vibram lug sole
No structural damage or loose stitching or binding but the leather parched and needing some love to resurrect them. The toes almost point upwards as they were used wet and put away without proper care that parched the leather.
Applying about 7 installments Apple Leather Care Leather Conditioner have accentuated the creosote stains on the inner sides and heels adds some real soul and flavor to these boots. A REAL improvement.

This was my favorite type of work boot growing up, then they replaced them with the new 202, which I still like but the heel counter is quite different. They brought back this counter design with the 2245 Steel Toe and 2545 which is Steel Toe and puncture resistant, but they didn’t bring back the moc toe.

I had RedWing resole my 15+ year old 406's less than a year ago and that is one of the heat bonded soles they came out great and only cost me $125. I dropped them off at the Nashville store (Rivergate) and they called me just under a month later to pick them up. My only complaint was they updated the sole to the supersole2.0 because the original was no longer available and the new seems a little less aggressive.

The boots turned out looking awesome. They’re very similar to the Irish Setters I have, at least in looks, I don’t know about comfort. My Irish setters are my go to foot wear for work in the butcher shop I work in.

Gents another fabulous restoration of some fine Redwing boots. I may reapply the red color on mine rubbing it in with a glove. Not sure if the dye brush I used was sufficient. And you always remind me without saying that hydrated leather is longer lasting. Thanks again and enjoy the holidays. Blessings

Although I’ve watched a ton of your videos, i rarely ever comment on them. I’ve been wearing boots well over 30 years. This video brought back memories as this pair of boots was my introduction into the boot world. My Dad had a pair that he had used up and had thrown them away. Well, I didn’t see that way. I pulled them out of the trash and used a marker and colored them black. I was a high school freshman at the time and I thought I was the coolest kid on the block. I wore them for about two years and then they disappeared with time. I’d sure like another pair but definitely not in black.

Redwing ABSOLUTELY DOES do repairs and resoles on their modern work boots boots. I have my work boots done every other year or so. As long as they are the US produced boots. They DON'T do any repair or resoles on the foreign made junk that they are using to devalue their name with. All three of the boots you splashed up can be redone. Those are EXACTLY like the ones that Redwing will resole.

Just so you know. I'm pretty sure I saw that exact pair on Ebay a few months ago... A quick peek at the tag would show how old they really are.

Yeah, I think there was some misunderstanding and miscommunication on our part. As two guys who are BOMBARDED monthly with RW boots from guys who were turned down by RW for resoles, we were trying to get across that many of them are a pain to work on, we don’t want to do them, AND RW doesn’t even want to do some of them. Yes, they do resole most of their boots, but as I put in my pinned comment, there are a lot of Red Wing, Werx, IrishSetter and other boots of theirs that they will not do.

@@TrentonHeath I totally understand why you don't want to work on them on a regular basis. Yes. Werx and Irish Setter all all made overseas, and the only RW branded items they don't work on are the stuff made overseas. They need to take those items out from under their name as well to end the confusion. If it's US made, they resole them.

I love my redwing workboots and would never consider any others. They are by far the most comfortable, water repelling and longest lasting boots that I have ever owned.

Love these restoration videos. They give us a look into how cobblers work.
Just a recommendation: when showing the restored shoes, do provide more glory shots of it. It serves well to show us your hard work.
