Tobias Menzies is an exceptional Master of his craft. He was able to play dual roles, of complete polarity, with utter perfection. His emotional range is unbelievable, and a massive contribution to the success of the Outlander franchise. His portrayals of Frank and BJR deserve accolades. Thank you, Tobias Menzies.

Watching this after 3x3...and while Frank was wrong for cheating on Claire and choosing to stay even after she offered him a divorce once, don’t forget how he once wanted to love her and stay with her after she told him about her pregnancy . He fought for her too, but her love for Jamie was too passionate and incomparable to her 1st marriage. They were both victims of their circumstances and it changed them deeply. And on Claire’s side, she still loved Frank in her own way, wearing both wedding rings and appreciated him for being a good father, even if he wasn’t a good husband in their later years. The shades of grey between the characters and their relationships are amazingly highlighted in the show. While I love Jamie and Claire together, I do have a soft spot for Claire and Frank and I truly believe they would have loved each other faithfully if Claire never time traveled.

To be honest, it was a complicated and messed up situation for all three of them.
Jamie sent Claire thorugh the stones, fully expecting to die and never seeing her or their baby again. He lost the love of his live for 20 years and missed out on everything with Brianna.
Claire lost the love of her life for 20 years and could never talk about him to the one piece of him she had left. Plus as much as she might or might not have tried to love Frank again the way she used to their relationship just couldn't compare to what she found with Jamie. That's not exactly her fault and she did offer him a divorce.
Frank lost his wife for three years and when she came back, she was deeply in love with someone else and pregnant with his child. As much as he loved Brianna, she was a constant reminder of that for him as much as for Claire.
I feel bad for all three of them.

I haven't read the books, but your information intensifies my dislike of Frank, a man of his era who is always very much about Frank and his own feelings. This is evident in the way that he proposes marriage on the spot, tries to get Claire's orders to the Western Front changed, and continuously makes decisions for her throughout the series. Event he so called second honeymoon is all bout his interests and relationship with a fellow historian with a little tail and sight-seeing on the side. He is not attending to her or their relationship at all. Now that she's 5 years older and has lived the trauma of war, the dashing person she first fell in love with is starting to show who he really is. When she wishes to become an American citizen he doesn't even discuss it, but dismisses it as his documentation as a Brit is enough for her status. It goes on and on. Even though he cannot control Claire, but he does make sure that his relationship with Brianna supersedes hers. He controls that and Candy/Sandy has the nerve to tell Claire that she was selfish not to let Frank go when she had in fact wanted to stop the pretense. So ironic.
Jamie, on the other hand, thinks about Claire, discusses issues with her, makes room for her gifts and opinions. He values her intelligence and sensitivity. He learns from her and he teaches her with a beautiful reciprocity. Most of all, he cherishes her.
Personally, I would have preferred that Jack and Frank were not played by the same actor. He wants Claire to open her eyes when having sex. But how could she do that and see the face of the man who abused her and broke her beloved Jamie? If their flawed relationship isn't already enough to suffer, she has to see Jack Randall every time she looks at his face. That little detail is one she never told Frank along with everything she had to suppress.

It’s Frank that wanted the marriage to work. She was ready to leave and not be with him. It was Frank that persuaded her to stay with the help of Mrs Graham.
She made a promise to Jamie and she had Brianna to think about..
Being a pregnant woman in 1948 with no money and no means to support herself. Women were expected to be housewives after the war.
Lets not pretend Frank didn’t know that Claire had very little options.
Now had she not been pregnant no doubt she would have left Frank.
It was Frank that wanted to take her back. That wanted to make it work. For Brianna’s sake she tried for the first 3 years after Brianna’s birth..
But it didn’t work. She just didn’t love him. The more independent Claire got the more Frank feared her leaving him..
It was Claire that asked for the divorce and later found out that Frank planned to take Brianna from her.
If anyone had grounds for divorce it was Claire. Franks many affairs with students. Something she was quick to remind him of..
They stayed together for the sake of both of their careers. It was mutually beneficial for them both at that time.

I don't blame her at all, she moved on with her life because she didn't know if she's going to return or not.
But I think their relationship was doomed from the start. When we first met them, Claire was away during the war attending to wounded soldiers, she endured a lot and as it was shown later she suffered from PTSD.
She and Frank were separated for some time and it's obvious that the war changed them both, they may have loved each other but you can see that the "spark" wasn't there.

In my opinion at the beginning I felt hurt for Frank even though it wasn't necessarily Claire's fault it's not like she didn't try to get back to him at first but you can't control who fall in love with. And then Frank knowing Jamie was alive and that Claire was going back to him and he said nth just irritates me. If you look closely Frank was very revengeful when he asked for a divorce he made it a point of saying how much Bree reminded Claire of Jamie implying that taking her away would be taking everything she held dear away and leaving her alone kinda like how she left him. Also him not wanting Bree to ever know of Jamie's existence was incredibly vindictive on his part and Jamie to this day has no problem with Claire wearing Franks ring has never expressed n issue with it or even Claire telling him about Frank. Frank however goes out of his way to say he doesn't want her to ever mention him and that first night wanted her to take off his ring which shows the major difference between Frank and Jamie. There's also him being so extremely close to Bree if you look closely on that it was almost like he wanted her to love him more so he could always have her on his side kinda like making Claire have to watch that and see that bond and I thought of this too when he told Brianna about the divorce the second he n Claire were done talking instead of waiting for them to tell her together like most people do

    • @nessyness5447
      @nessyness5447 3 года назад +11

I disagree it was not her fault, he had a chance to go back to her time, and she consciously decided to stay with jamie, who she had known for only six months. I don't care how in love she was, she was aware that she had vanished from her own time and left people there wondering what happened to them, thinking her kidnapped or dead and suffering in the not knowing because a corpse would not be found for her loved ones to mourn her and move on. She was aware of this, and decided to stay and play happy house with jamie. And when she comes back she goes and tell that person that has been going mad with worry and grief over her missing for 3 years and tell him she didn't even want to come back because she was happy with the other guy. So no, she is not free of blame, it's not her fault to not live frank anymore, sure, but his suffering because he didn't know what happened to her is. Being in love is not enough to justify what she did or the fact that she refuses to be empathic about what frank suffered and act like the only victim in the situation. Imagine someone you care a lot about, doesn't even have to be romantically, just your best friend or sibling for example, disappears one day. No one knows what happened to them, you spend years between hope of finding them and fear of the worst scenerios of what could have happened to them. And then one day they show up and they tell you they didn't want to come back, they have the means to, but they choose to stay wherr they were and let you suffer over what could have happened to them because they were having a happy time with some hottie they found. If your happiness must come at the expense of letting a loved one who didn't do anything bad to you suffer and live in desperation wondering what could have happened to you, then you are being very egoistical. Something like that can destroy a person's life, when a corpse is not found, the hope that you might still be alive doesn't let your loved ones move on, they get stuck in that state, some people start drinking, suffer depressions, etc, and their whole life gets destroyed by that desperation combined with hope.

But that one scene when she could have gone back after the first 6 months and here, these scenes are what made me dislike claire. Someone who would let their family or friends suffer wondering if they are being held captive and tortured somewhere for years because they have the hots for a guy they have known for 6 months is not someone i can respect.

I love stories that overturn tropes. It would be so easy to have Frank be a bad man, so we could all just be relieved that she found Jamie, and then heartbroken for her when she goes back to the awful Frank. But instead, Frank is a decent guy. Maybe not as "hot" as Jamie, but a decent person doing his best to be reasonable, and who really does love her and want to be with her. It adds a level of complexity to the story that I'm really grateful to see!
