Daniel, your last point really hit home. I was collecting in my teens and while it was not an overly amazing collection it was still mine. Well, the years caught up with me. Married, raised children , working ...you know the drill. When my Mom passed I went to look for my coins and my trains....nowhere to be found. So now that I'm retired I got back into collecting my precious pennies (and apparently so has everyone else). I just do not recall all the pressures of finding nice coins and at this point I refuse to buy any. Of course there many varieties and errors I have to catch up with....whew. Your videos have helped me immensely in making positive additions to my fledgling new start in the hobby. I don't have much but with your video help and possibly some communication I can get something together and for that I thank you my friend. Keep up the great work!!! Yours in the hobby, Karl
CONGRATULATIONS on your new COIN Shop Daniel: INTEGRITY HONESTY VISION and HELP deciding What WE NEED To Reluctantly Grade? Confederate Currency, Slabbing and SILVER American EAGLES. Collecting COOL coins since 1957 😉 THANKS Again for Your Inspiring Interests!
The biggest myth is thinking that "investing" in rare, or limited production collector coins, (silver) at prices higher than spot prices, cute pandas on them, large bars rather than easily spent dime size pieces, etc. is a smart move....THEY ARE NOT ! If, or when the shit hits the fan, nobody will give you two loaves of bread just because a coin is rare, shines, or has a panda on them, just because they happen to like pandas, or it's a screw up.The ONLY thing that will matter is...'What is the percentage of silver, and... HOW MUCH DOES IT WEIGH ?"....period !
I'mone of those younger people who does most of my buying on Facebookand ebay or coin roll hunting, when I first got into searching for errors I decided to try and find as many resources as I could for free online. Since then I've purchased a redbook, bluebook, world coins identification book, paper money book, and a die varietie book. I think it would be cool to see a video overviewing what you believe to be the best resources both on and offline for collecting. Die markers, varieties, mintage figures, bullion, basic facts identifying fakes, common tools and good storage seemed to be a hunt for me and I've bought resources that I found better for free online. I've thought about buying the money.org grading course mainly for the ngc membership and training books even if I don't complete the course but haven't made the jump at $500 for the course. Thanks for making all these great videos.
Once again great video. Sometimes I overpay just cause I want the coin now, doesn’t make me an idiot, I have the means. I’ve started collections for all my grandkids which they help with albeit limited due to their age but I’m sure one or two will continue on with it as they age. There is a difference between collecting and accumulating, either way it is still fun.
You sir are absolutely correct. People think just cause a coin is old it's worth 100s or 1000s of dollars and Etsy is the worst of the worst. I don't buy online because I just don't trust anyone and I wanna see the coins in person. I have bought a few Wheat pennies rolls for a few bucks a year ago just for fun but other than that I wanna meet the seller and see the coins first.
Great informative video! This is how true numismatic facts should be told. I am 15 years old and own a booth at an antique store, appraise coins and currency, and am very knowledgeable about buying and selling coins and currency.
Another good one. I collect coins and just got home from the ANA in Pittsburgh. If I didn't see it 3 days in a row I wouldn't believe it. People walking up to tables saying can you buy this? I don't know anything about it...but there were alot of young people
Coming to you from the future! It's March 2021 and everything you said is still relevant. However, the young people are very interested in silver as they are learning how its manipulation for 150 years will destroy the banking cartel eventually.
I agree about age. I got into coins in my twenties but didn't get serious until my thirties. Having more money to buy good stuff helps! Informative video.
Great information. In MY experience there are three basic categories of coin collectors; Hobby (just like coins), Speculative (both for profit and for investment), Scammer (no description needed here). I always keep that in mind when I go through a swap meet and see a person selling coins. I also keep that in mind when I go into a coin dealer. There are coin dealers that fit any of those type and if you realize that you will be ahead of the game. I used to trust business people but now that I am 68 and have been burned I use those categories BEFORE I deal with any of them (even ebay).
Bummer that your shop is in Portsmouth. I heard it was in Ohio, and I was interested in visiting. I unfortunately live around Cleveland, so that's a pretty long drive for me. I like that you brought up the myth that only old people collect coins. I'm 17 and I've been collecting since I was about 12. One of my favorite misconceptions is "This coin is old. It must be valuable". Thanks for the vid!
I cherry picked 1801 NC1 large cent on EBay. Many collectors and dealers do not even check varieties on lower grade large cents..... Several years ago I cherry picked a 1928 silver dollar in a junk box at a show. That box was full of 1923 and I think the busy dealer overlooked it. He definitely knew coins but had many coins going through his hands.
They have priced young people out of the market. They can’t afford anything nice so they aren’t too interested.. there is nothing in circulation today. I was a teenager in the late 1960’s and my father had 4 newspaper machines so I got to look through about $85 a day in change and periodically found silver and buffalos and plenty of War nickels. ( so many I would let them pass unless better grade) Young people today just don’t have opportunity like that. Even if they had change to look through it would be quite boring.
I have been watching your videos from the beginning of my coin collecting. I have seen you grow more comfortable behind the camera and it's that confidence that attract people to your videos. Thank you for this video. I've been collecting coins for a few years, and one thing of I learned from a person who was teaching me many years ago in a soils lab doing soils analysis, he said " the minute you think you KNOW EVERYTHING you KNOW NOTHING". I pondered that many years since, and I find that application to all things in life. Coin collecting is always a learning experience. Boy, if I only knew then what I have learned to date, I may have avoided some of the costly errors when first starting out. I am still learning. I really learn from several videos such as yours, and by talking to dealers, and other collectors.

I think the biggest problem with new collectors too is, there's a lot of videos out showing a common coin saying it's worth thousands and you can find it in pocket change. In realty, the coin in they're video was pulled out of a mint set or coin roll/bag and graded really high. Common circulated coins are only worth face value.
Yes, just spent an hour with a couple young people over that. Had a corn stalk ear and a floating D Lincoln Cents, had to explain and bring it up on the computer for them.
thats why i spend my time going thew the comments on coin videos, i answer questions and tell them there coin value prices, that way the common coin they think is worth a fortune they now know is only worth a few cents
I am not to old and I love the excitement of finding a unique coin through my pocket. Change or buying rolls from my local gas station. I have a hard time parting with them because I love the history of why and the information that I gain to show others.
Yes, that is best. It amazes me that some just can't move on and not say anything. I don't expect everyone to like me, but I never troll someone's videos.

I always wondered about that buy the time you pay rent and a percentage of what you sell do you do ok after that on profits.
I do great. on profits. I just pay the owner of the antique store 20% commission. The owner pays rent, i don't.
