And Next Level Games are still working on Nintendo games (Luigi's Mansion 3 for Switch). That rumor keeps being peddled around to justify why a new Punch Out has not been made since. But the fact is that there are plenty of Nintendo IPs that are dormant (F-Zero, Earthbound, Wave Race, Eternal Darkness, etc) and unfortunately, the Punch Out IP went back to the vault.

They reportedly told Next Level they were in breach of contract and that the game would be pulled from production until it was fixed, which allegedly cost around $2 million. And Nintendo apparently went a step further and licensed Sailor Moon from Bandai as well, to protect themselves. It, uh, sounds like a big, weird mess. now if this isn't enough proof of what happened I don't know what is .

Apparently the idea got nixed because they didn't like the idea of people booting up the game just to punch a woman, which like... okay I respect, but I think the offset of Peach tossing the frilly dress, stepping up in boxing gear to reveal she's actually freaking ripped and handing Mac his ass is something so wild and awesome that I'm sad it's not the way it went
Here's a story, when I was a kid my parents bought burnt copies of games for our Wii and of course Punch Out was one of them. I really enjoyed playing Punch Out.....until I got into Title Defense, from being unable to progress to the next set of fighters because the game would crash whenever I beat King Hippo (once again the game was a burnt copy), to having to just having to skip all the other fighters because...well...I sucked and the game started to feel pity for me. Despite all of that (as well as getting my ass destroyed by Donkey Kong) I still loved playing this game that was filled to the brim with character. Unfortunately it's burnt state got to it and it stopped working, so my need to play the game again stuck to me for years and the only thing that could satisfy me was Punch Out videos of people just destroying the game like it's nothing. Eventually I was able to finally buy a proper copy of Punch Out on Amazon, I could finally satisfy my Punch Out needs, and with the new information I learned on how to beat the Title defense variants of all the boxers, I entered Title defense mode with confidence.... I then had the exact same experience these guys had...minus Macho Man, I humiliated his ass
My god... this is so good... this is, like, _VINTAGE_ Hype & Rage content from Max. Just... Y!VG throwing themselves at a challenge, taking multiple weeks to complete it, but eventually, by the skin of their teeth, achieving victory. Everything I love about this channel.
I really wish Nintendo would give this game the "Deluxe" treatment for Switch. It was so good! Surely they can change the texture in that manga book to avoid having to pay out again.
