- A playthrough of Nintendo's 1993 platformer for the Super Nintendo, Super Mario Bros. 2 (as it appeared in Super Mario All-Stars).
In this video I play through all twenty stages without using warp zones.
The story behind Super Mario Bros. 2 is pretty well-known already, but in case you need a short recap: the original SMB2 (known as The Lost Levels: • Super Mario Bros. 2 (F... ) was judged to be too difficult and too derivative to be worth releasing in western markets. Nintendo then decided to repurpose a Japanese license-based game that they created in 1987 (Yume Koujou: Doki Doki Panic) as Mario's next adventure. With some refinements made to the gameplay and a shiny new facelift, it launched late 1988 in the US as Super Mario Bros. 2 ( • Super Mario Bros. 2 (N... ). In 1992 it also finally saw a Famicom release under the name Super Mario USA.
The game went on to be a massive success, clearly. The choice of characters, the more free-form gameplay, and the cartoony aesthetic were all welcome changes that made the game feel more modern than the original Super Mario Bros. ( • Super Mario Bros. (NES... ).
The 16-bit All-Stars update is every bit as good as the NES game, too. The overhauled graphics and sound do a nice job of reinvigorating the game for a new generation. It's all so bright and cheerful, and it plays just as well as it did on the NES.
For anyone that hasn't yet experienced the black sheep of the 8-bit Mario games, the SNES update is a good place to start. But regardless of whether you play it on the NES or SNES, it's an excellent game that has long since earned its status as a classic.
Go Team Luigi!

Super Mario All-Stars is and will always be a classic!!
Mario 2 is still one of my all time favorites, but it does weird me out a bit that Mario dreams about force feeding vegetables to a gassy frog.
It's weird that they haven't used that gameplay anymore. An encouragament on exploration with no time limit was very refreshing.
Super Mario Bros 2 was weird in general.
Why am I getting unexpected *Rise of the Mushroom Kingdom* flashbacks from this?
@@essex_120_union9 Part 3 and 4? Yeah I remember that.
Back when Nintendo reskinned a yet unreleased game instead of rereleasing the same one. Nowadays, all they want to do is rerelease.
This was where I discovered Mario 2 and at first, for a while I could never figure out how to beat Birdo until I saw a commercial for this game's GBA port that briefly showed Mario standing on top of the egg in mid-air to pick it up. You never forget moments like this. Mario 2 (or Doki Doki Panic) was full of unique touches like finding a rocket ship later.
Like many, I absolutely love SMB2. To me it is one of the perfect examples of how a platform game should be done.
As a adult, I was kinda shocked to discover some people dislike it. Sorry but, this is head and shoulders better than the Japanese one. Is not even a contest. The controls alone leave the other in the dust, let alone graphics, music and the gameplay.
It's because this one isn't simply a retread. It's based on another game, but hey, it's different. That's why it's more fun.
I am so glad that Nintendo released Super Mario All-Stars. Playing through all of the SNES revamped titles was worth the buy. Thank you so much for making a video on this.
Since I was a kid I always loved playing as Luigi, so much so I would beat the whole game just as him. My friends didn't understand why I always picked the tall green guy with the weird floaty jump. 🤣Now I'm glad I did because now he hardly gets any love outside Mario Kart and Smash.
Thanks so much for playing this! Lots of great times!
Just showing up to show some love. Will def watch this when I go on lunch soon.
30+ years on, and the music from this game is still in my head.
Nintendo needs to bring back Wart as a villan in future super mario games. One where Wart teams up with Bowser.
The US version of Mario 2 is so underrated. In my opinion it’s far better than SMB and The Lost Levels.
Underrated is a cringe word and I think nobody likes The Lost Levels over SMB 2.
No matter what anyone says, this is the Super Mario 2 I grew up with and loved as a kid (and to this day!), which makes this the true Super Mario Bros. 2 in my mind!
My favorite of the NES series, I always enjoyed throwing enemies more than jumping on them. It would be a long time before id find out that it was a reskin, but i never questioned it at the time
these games will never not be amazing to me, I learned about mario at such a young age from my neighbour playing it on nes, and then renting snes when I was older and loving these games, so classic and simple, nostalgia to the max, from the music to the gameplay and story always love reliving it and thats why I love anything mario to this day and I'll be 35 in 3 months lol
This game is still magical to me and love it. I've found it a bit trickier to finish at times that SMB and SMB3. Cheers!
I like the bass and tempo of the music

Truly my favorite Mario sequel ever before Super Mario Bros 3. I wanna disagree with everyone in the past that it is a bad Mario game because it was a revamped version of DokiDoki Panic for the Famicom Disc System. Be thankful we don’t get the true Super Mario Bros 2 in Japan, but later referred as The Lost Levels. Otherwise, like I said before, there will be a whole lotta toddlers having the tidal wave of frustration and trolling from the game.
So yeah, it was truly the reason why we get this version and even Shigeru Miyamoto treats it as it is part of the series. Anyways, I still own this on NES and I got All-Stars + Super Mario World combo game and I still love the game all the time and always played it without boredom whatsoever!
People said it is bad, shame on them, especially saying Super Mario Sunshine a bad Mario game. The sequel has a unique different gameplay for a side-scrolling game, even Zelda 2 did something different and that turned out okay despite the cryptic nature of it like Castlevania 2: Simon’s Quest, but then again, still a classic.
In conclusion , Super Mario 2 (USA) still keeps me happy and never cease to amaze me. It is a game still deserve praises by true fans of Mario. I am so happy it is my first game when I was 2 and had fun practicing learning how to play the game. Thanks for this, man!
I was with you until you said Castlevania 2... I mean, if you know what you're doing it's a great game but without a guide its puzzles are damn impossible.
Thanks for this. Gave me closure on a game I never finished as a kid 😊
Man I remember borrowing this game from my grandpa slowly grinding through them one by one...Mario two might be the one I remember the most. Just cause fryguy was such a pain for me finally getting so pissed off I started to just pick toad and just yell "MUSHROOM NEVER GIVES UP!" At the TV until I finally beat it.
I love how your story makes you sound insane and ydgaf 😀That sort of honesty is wicked refreshing 👏
@@NintendoComplete hey plenty of games have driven people to the brink of insanity through rage ;)
@@mutt-the-barbarian I understand all too well.
@@NintendoComplete Aladdin SNES carpet escape gave me both rage and nightmares. I was never able to beat that level for two years. Two years of eating through lives and continues and Sad Game Over Genie face.
Super Mario All-Star is still one of the best Mario Games. I spend so mucht Time to play it.
6:28 the best of the All-Stars music remixes in my opinion haha
I remember when I beat this as a kid. I wish they would bring Wart back as a boss.
I strongly perfer this version over the NES, especially with the music. It feels more polished.
I know what you mean. Super Mario Allstars was the first remake I ever experienced for a game series, and it made a huge impression on me. I got it for Christmas back in 1993 and I was absolutely blown away at how great the NES classics looked and played on the SNES. As for SMB2, one of the things I love is the improved slot machine.
@@msw0322 if it had the gba voices and items it would really improve the gameplay
@@Shawn.Mathew The GBA version is amazing!
I love this game. It would be so cool to see it remade jn a co-op play style like the newer Mario games. I always wanted it to be 2 player so my brother and I could play it together. Still such a beautiful game that is near and dear to me.
>judged to be too derivative.
Ironic isn't it?
Only gripe with this game is the lack of music tracks, only 2 level themes and 2 boss themes. I think it would fine if there was some kind of Dungeon theme.
Memories. Nothing but memories. 😍😍
All-Stars is how I was introduced to this game. We didn't own it on nes and everyone I knew either hadn't played it or it was forgettable to them. I never got around to beating it, I didn't like it as much as the other two (super mario bros 3 was always my favourite). I actually thought "lost levels" was just an addon made in the spirit of the original just for the all stars release and never knew it was meant to be the actual sequel instead of this one. Ironically, I did end up enjoying "lost levels" a lot more and beat it along with 1&3. So yeah, this was the only one of the four I didn't beat on all stars.
Oh super Mario Bros una joya de juego :3 me imagino cuanto te costo este video asi que toma tu like
I think this game would have been an underrated hit if they had decided to repurpose it with something other than Mario characters. Thanks to Mario Madness for it then, it became one of the best-selling games in history.
The NES and its GBA re-release are the only Mario games I've ever beaten.
Super Mario Bros. 3 is next right??? That's my favorite of the four All-Stars games!
The *GOOD* Mario 2.
nah the bad one
You mean REAL Mario 2.
@@LITTLE1994 Yes. That too.
I concur. The original Mario 2 was sort of more of an expansion of the original. Doki Doki Panic was its own unique thing originally so it was a good call to send it to North America with a Mario reskin.

The Birdo And Ostro Names Are Still Wrong
I always thought it strange that Nintendo didn’t correct that mistake in the end credits.
It's a remaster of the NES game, not everything was reworked.

Someone needs to do a hack restoring Doki Doki Panic but with these graphics.

I'm honestly not a big fan of the sound design of this version. Yes, everything else got upgrades, but a lot of the unique sound effects were just replaced with ones from Super Mario World... even the cries that the bosses made in the original.
World 7 looks similar to the Chozo ruins in the Metroid games.

Doki Doki awesome
Wart and his lair are all pimped out in the SNES version
Of course
Could never rack up as many lives in this SNES version as I could in the NES original. Unlike the third game, you could go beyond 99 lives, into the alphabet, like A0 being 100, A1 being 101. Used to get into the P's due to having the timing down on the slot machines, and knowing where to put the sub-space potions to get the most coins for the between stage slot machines (you could only get coins twice in Sub-Space in every level, if you tried a 3rd, 4th, or 100 time, you'd only pluck vegetables out of the ground after in Sub-Space till the next level). It is timing I likely no longer have. Not sure if the lives counter is locked at 99 as a maximum of lives in this version, but SMB 3 pretty much still is, as are modern Mario games (Mario just loses his hat if you get 99 lives in those, and has that annoying voiceover, WOOHOO MOTHERFUCKER!).
I could never beat this game 😂

The original game was called "Dream Factory" and had nothing to do with Mario. Nintendo put Mario and co. in the game to boost sales.
