- A playthrough of Nintendo's 1993 first-person rail shooter for the Super NES, Yoshi's Safari.
If you've ever wondered what might happen if you were to put a bazooka in Mario's hands, here's your answer!
Yoshi's Safari is a light gun shooter that requires the Super Scope peripheral, and as far as I know, it's the only game in the Mario lineup to provide a gun as the hero's primary weapon, just as it is still the only game to give you persistent control of Mario from a first-person perspective.
Given that Yoshi's Safari is a first-party release, I'm really shocked that it doesn't get a whole lot of attention. Maybe it's because it's not a classic platformer, or because it requires that you have access to an exotic controller and a tube TV to play it, but despite its relative obscurity, Yoshi's Safari is a cool novelty and an interesting conversation piece.
The story goes something like this: Princess Peach (as she is officially named for the first time in English) begs Mario to go save King Fret and Prince Pine of Jewelry Land, friends of hers that have been kidnapped by Bowser. And as whipped as he is, we all know that Mario can't refuse.
Somewhat not akin to Dirty Harry, you dish out a heap of vigilante justice on traditional Mario enemies, including the Koopa Kids, to find the royals and treasures of Jewelry Land. To rescue these totally random and non-canonical friends of the princess, Mario hops aboard Yoshi's back, his fully automatic shoulder cannon primed to shoot at anything that moves.
Except for Yoshi, that is. He doesn't seem to much appreciate it when you blast the back of his head with bazooka rounds.
Yoshi's Safari is an exceptionally good looking game that takes full advantage of the SNES hardware. The screen scrolling is butter-smooth, the enemies scale in and out of the screen fluidly and without excessive pixelation, the floor textures and backdrops all attractively depict the range Mario stage motifs on display, and it generally runs without hiccups - the occasional bits of slowdown rarely last for more than a second or two. The game leans heavily on Mode 7 effects to provide an impressive illusion of 3D movement, and the twisting, turning course designs coupled with light gun controls make Yoshi's Safari feel like a trippy combo-platter of Super Mario Kart, Lethal Enforcers, and Space Harrier.
You grab items like coins and fire flowers to perk up your odds, and many of the stages offer branching paths which are handy for finding extra power-ups and 1-up mushrooms. Most of the time you'll be shooting at streams of staple Mario enemies like Goombas and Bloopers, and each stage is capped off with a showdown against some notable baddie from Super Mario World. As in every other light gun shooter ever, these boss fights require that you find a weak spot to fire at mercilessly, but the expressive spritework gives these guys a lot of personality that you normally wouldn't see from the squat character graphics in traditional Mario platformers, and I got a kick out of the vehicles that many of them ride - some of them look like they were taken straight out of Dr. Wily's mini-boss design manual.
Suffice it to say that I found it all pretty charming overall.
And the last boss battle is so awesome - I don't recall ever seeing Bowser look as metal as he does here. It is a pity that you never get to hear a Hammer Brother screaming, "You can't shoot me!" as you shoot him, though.
Yoshi's Safari is an easy and short game (though it does have an "expert mode" if you're inclined to play a second loop), and it's not as addictive or deep as the likes of Battle Clash or Metal Combat, but Yoshi's Safari did provide a good excuse to dig out the Super Scope and a few handfuls of AA batteries for the weekend back in the day. It's still a lot of fun now, though I'd suggest a Wii-mote and a SNES emulator to play it these days. That's how I played when I was recording this video.
Man I wish they had done more games like this! The way it goes about doing the whole first-person-on-rails thing is super effective.
On occasion I still wonder about whatever became of King Fret, Prince Pine, and Jewelry Land. Any thoughts, guys?

They gave Mario a gun before Sonic Team gave shadow the hedgehog a gun therefore Mario is edgier than Sonic
I agree with this statement
guns weren't edgy in 1993
@@nrlty1253 It's not about who is and what was the edgiest, it about how well they use the concept, in this case Mario using a gun, but in a toned down family friendly matter, was done much better than Shadow using a gun, in which Shadow's game was to appeal to teens and young adolescents but failed on that aspect.
@@nrlty1253 One year before the assault weapon ban.
That's because Mario has a SuperScope bazooka controller
Well we can add jewelry thief and mass murderer to the long list of careers Mario has had.
Existential Crisis mario did not steal the jewels 💎.
Is it going to be good?
Mario kills his friends

Wow these graphics are pillow shaded. What is it with poor Yoshi and seriously flawed pixel art? First this, then Yoshi’s Island DS.
Surprising as it might be that Mario starred in a first-person light gun shooter, Yoshi's Safari made an excellent case for what could be done with the Super Scope.
Pure genius; the combination of the Super Scope, a first person perspective with rail shooter gameplay and Mode 7 environments make you feel like you're really Mario gunning down Goombas and Koopa Troopas on Yoshi's back! Vehicular armed genocide has never looked so cute.
Sadly they never make too many light gun games
Yep,but being more a cute em up then a shoot em up shooter.
Yoshi and Mario are Nintendo franchise representatives so, both of them are the main character

"Mario Goes on a 'Killing Spree' on a Dinosaur while the radio plays happy music"
@Sexually Transmitted Disease. I bet he would eat things that would make a billy goat puke, too.
@Sexually Transmitted Disease. AH!! Such a missed opportunity, give Mario a bandana with his trademark "M" on the front, it probably would have worked, right?? LOL
@Sexually Transmitted Disease. even its kids show Ok

Fun Fact: This is the first game outside of that Princess Toadstool is called Princess Peach.
Unofficially that is.. they didn't start pushing Peach until 1996, when Super Mario RPG still used toadstool and sm64 said princess toadstool... Peach.
@@adventureoflinkmk2 lol
And what a debut. Forcing mario to shoot up a neighboring kingdom just as a favour.
And since then, Princess Toadstool is now Princess Peach in the future games.
She has always been called princess Peach in Japan, so technically this is isn't the first game she is called princess peach maybe in US. And Mario games has always been released first in Japan. After a few years, Nintendo of America adapted the name princess Peach.
Mario's had enough of Bowser's shit and has decided to end it once and for all. This ain't your mama's Mario no this is Mario, to the EXTREME! Also this was the 1st usage of Peach in the US "she was called Toadstool until this game, most people think it was Mario 64 but it was this one it's just this one is often forgoten about".
I don’t know i prefer the name toadstool over peach.
What happened to jewelry land? Nobody knows
It's a hidden gem.
A+
Hey! It needs to come back! Same goes for a lot of places nomined just once (e.g. Sarasaland)
but noooo, kids won't get this "deep lore", let's remake for the 43905th time the Mushroom Kingdom, and every time we make it different.
I see whatcha did there
@@gab_v250, I agree. There's a lot of stuff deep in the old games that never comes back and I'd like to see that change.
Personally, I'd like to see some of the Mario RPG stuff come back. I know it's a rights issue but still.
MetalJesusRocks would be proud 👏
I love it when the koopalings have their own robots. Maybe Nintendo would bring them back some day.
Same
Bring them back being Bowser's children, it was half their character identity

MAYBE if this was an Arcade Game in the 90's, this game COULD've been popular...
This looks like this would have been a perfect family-friendly arcade game in the 90's to stand out in crowd of all those over the top violent fighting games, right?? xD
I must have missed it but, was this ever released over on the Wii's Virtual Console service?? I think this idea should revisited once more in a newer installment!! This game is just oozing with charm!!
dan smith well i would,ve been shocked back then.
It never got released on Wii Virtual Console sadly.
It would of been cool to see Yoshi's safari work with the Wii Zapper.
What I'll aways remember about this more than anything is the dirty look Yoshi gives you if you shoot him in the back of the head.
“Alright now that we have artificial 3D rendering on the ness for floors, what sort of games should we make?”
“F zero and starfox seam cool and all but how about a game where mario goes around shooting people with a real gun instead of a fire flower or anything. We could even sell an accessory to pair with the game and call it like the super scope!”
I love how the only way to kill the second boss is to shoot him in his....uh.......lower cannon.
Well played, Nintendo. Well played.
*now that’s a lotta damage*
In Europe it’s called Mario sniper for the snes
Lol it is actually called Yoshi's Road Hunting in Japan
Oh god
Yoshi is a badass. He isn't fazed by Mario punching the back of his head, and reacts with mild annoyance when shot with a BAZOOKA.
He do that because Mario saved his life.
Game: Shoot Screen
Me: *pulls out a shot gun*
Oh no, it would be like those videos of kids breaking TVs with flying Wii remotes all over again.
this is the first game in the mario franchise where the princess is referred to as "Peach"
Yes and no, the Super Mario World manual says The Princess "Peach" Toadstool was kidnapped. But it seems it is the first in game reference.
Yes she was always peach on japan, however in america Nintendo called them Toadstool for a while
@@rex_melynas Wrong, Super Mario World's manual never mentions anything about the name 'Peach'.
This game really is the very first mention of the name outside of Japan, in-game or otherwise.
In the west
First game in the west, she was always peach in japan. They did it because “Princess Toadstool” wouldnt have fit in the text box lol small things end up making huge changes sometimes
Mario fans: "You can't use guns in Super Mario Bros.!"
Me: "You have not played enough mario games to say that!"
Sadly this game requires an old crt tv,wich most people have STUPIDLY thrown away in favor of a more light weight flatty lcd screen, but i am sooo glad that i still own my sony 37 inch flat crt screen just for this game among others,, the problem is that this game may be will be more forgotten overtimes because of the required superscope and a crt in order to play thiis game,,but most people only seems to care about more bigger tv’s and being in 4K,but i consider that BS .
This is Roman Reign's favourite FPS
The thumbnail of this video feels so fucking wrong and cursed...
Just seeing this game for the first time and I already want Nintendo to make a modern version for the switch. Just imagine what they could do with current graphics and game engines.

Karleigh Johnson Don’t know, I just made them up 😅
You ruined me and you will rule the day
Man, Nintendo really missed out on releasing a sequel/remake of this for the Wii.... it would've been perfect for that platform. Oh well, it's still not too late for them to make one for current systems, anyway! And they ought to resurrect the Battle Clash/Metal Combat franchise while they're at it! 😉
Mario: see you later alligator
Such a great game. I hope it gets ported to the switch someday, but glad to see here :D
I really doubt there gunna port a game that has mario shoot any sorta gun. It also requires the Super scope.
I already have yoshi safari and it was hard to shoot
You think it would have made the Wii.
@@MetalPersonJ riiiiiiiight?
You can play it on the wii
It feels like an arcade game. Nice !
Lucie Bureau you are correct! It does feel like an arcade game 🕹 👾. It should be one ☝️ too.
@@cameronknapp7315 emojis are cringe by the way
But I like using emojis. 😀😃😄😁😆🙂😉
AND THEY ARE NOT CRINGY 😬 !!!!!!!!!!!!
If only this was an arcade game
@@cameronknapp7315 they get worst more you stare at them
If only the super scope sold well and the game got more attention , there couldve been more sequels being made
The Ascension of the gems look suspiciously similar to the ending of Super Mario RPG, Legend of the Seven Stars.
I can't believe Princess Peach sending Mario to Jewelry land, with a gun and possibly an big empty bag.
Lars2015 Oh i
get the joke
Mario: Alright! Put the money in the bag. PUT IT IN!!!
I still have a tube TV, a Super Scope, as well as the SNES and a copy of the game. I ought to record a playthrough of it sometime, as well as some of Battle Clash and Metal Combat.
Seams like you never got around to it huh 🤔
How incredible, that this was done on the SNES! Very cool!
I absolutely love this game!! Light gun games were always fascinating to me as a kid, stuff like Duck Hunt were way before my time and by the time I found Yoshi's Safari with the Super Scope, companies had already been making games like that for the PC like this Nerf game I had where you shoot cartoon robots. Anyhoo, Yoshi's Safari is a lovely on-rails FPS with great music, I love the boss battles, and the Grass Land theme for the first level is just a relaxing, and extremely nostalgic treat for the ears.
I was not prepared to see Yoshi having so much sass in the way he looked at me today.
Did....did this game actually happen?
Yes....... Yes it did. I had a copy
Yeap .. Fun game to play with snes scope
4:44 Yoshi sounds weird.
You would too if a fat guy with a bazooka was sitting on your back :) lol
Honey, the plumber has a gun
never played this before and i wanna try it i'll wait until they add this on SNES Switch Online Service
I've owned this game since 2009 and I never actually saw it in action outside of a few in game demos until a couple of years ago since I didn't have and still don't have a Super Scope.
I have a Super scoop as you can see in my video I just purchused one in a box. But sadly I don't own a old tv. So the Super scoop is useless. But at least I own it.
I know im late but you can play this game your phone using snes 9x you just touch the screen where you want to shoot actually works out good for this game
3:31, I swear, when he looks at you when you accidentally shoot him, he looks like he wants to say
"Ow, you idiot!!"
Mario really tortured Yoshi on the SNES days huh, shoot him for fun, or punch him to extend his mouth... I think if Yoshi knew, he would probably let baby mario die in the middle of the forest as a baby...
...or eating him! Check out the "eating Baby Mario glitch" for SMW2.
I had Metal Combat and this game as a kid. Many fun times were had with that enormous bazooka!
I've never known this game existed until now.
Playing this game on the computer is so much better than using the actual Super Scope. Seriously that thing was so hard to use.
How u play on pc don't u need gun also?
Knight Bowser looks like the Original Blastoise.
And his face when you shoot him... Almost makes me feel sorry for him. In fact, it does...
Oh man I loved my SuperScope, Battleclash and Metal Combat. I don't even remember this game, though. I probably would've loved it back in the day.
I would love to see this show up on the Switch with joycon and/or touchscreen support. It's an overlooked gem, and Superscope games don't work on modern TVs.
You can play it on the wii
The original Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle...
funny how this game is not noticed alot and not played alot because barely people has super scope / MAC RIFLE idk
0:22 The first time Toadstool is named Peach.
Glad to see this game again!
Wait...you’re telling me this game is good? Now I have to buy it
I’m gonna be honest
I think this one of the best SNES games in my opinion
18:44 when you break the barrier in an snes
See? I told you no one gives shit even if Mario is given real gun. Thats how strong the loyalty towards Nintendo is. Whats next? Mario fucking princess and still getting away with it because "ayyy, its just a fund and a games, paisanos"
The only one that provides a gun? So what do you call those things the gang used in Kingdom Battle?
also this is one of the few super nintendo games I still own since my house was robbed
I would love to play it again, whenever the polymega x sinden light gun gets released
Sorry your house was robbed
How did you're house get robbed?
Christian Cerritos uh, well, it's terrible actually, my house was robbed during my mom's funeral, you see people look for obituaries in the paper to see the date and time of the funeral then they rob the house because they know the families won't be home. It's terrible. People are terrible.
@@fahriakalin5936 oof that was bad
They probably looked at that, said "Mario with a gun? What?" and just left it there
Ah yes, the other DOOM
Mario with a gun is WAY better than Sonic with a gun! I'm looking at you, _Shadow the Hedgehog!_
I got one thing to say...
Why couldn’t just call this a 3-D Mario game! It would have been more successful.
Tabitha St Germain as Wendy O Koopa
Mario! What are you doing to Yoshi in the ranking screen? You know Yoshi is helping you on your adventure!
I never got a chance to play this but the graphics and music are pretty solid
as far as i know Super Scope has several disadvantages than Zapper one of those is requires 6 AA batteries to work and short lifespan
Also less cool than a zapper.
My favorite part was how tired your shoulder and arm would get after an hour of playing with it. It was so uncomfortable to hold. I got it for my birthday (in 1992 I think?) and I played the Super Scope 6 game and Battle Clash a ton. I loved it, but I hated it at the same time lol. It chewed through so many batteries, too.
@@NintendoComplete oh yeah because you hold it like a bazooka and other thing only 9 games requires super scope compare to 17 games on the NES Zapper (i don't count Unlicensed games, 6 NES games have optional gun support)
The music is just lovely, who was the composer?
The opening and high score themes are my favorite.
Since an ahole decided to not give you an answer, i will.
The composers were never credited in game.
Yoshiki Nishimura, Miyuki Uemura, Yasushi Tokunaga
And no the wikipedia didnt have entries for this.
@@philswaim392 Thanks buddy! It's quite odd that the composers weren't credited.
@@firestar4407 yeah those days composers were lucky to be credited unless they were specially brought in or if music was a major feature of the game
@@philswaim392 Did they also work on Yoshi's Cookie? The music from that game sounds quite similar to Yoshi Safari's.
@@firestar4407 makes sense
Alt tittle: Mario holding a gun and randomly shooting everything in his way while playing happy music
'Next time you come to visit, please bring Princess Peach.'
Sequel?
Nope, it’s referring to the hard mode that you have to do a particular Input for which if I remember correctly you have to have completed the game once first for it to work.
Could be wrong since I no longer have access to the copy I played growing up.
Level 5's boss reminds me of the Frog robot used by one of Pac-Man's ghost enemies in Pac-Man World 2.
this game would be great in VR
It's amazing that videogame.
😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳
Saw sign guy’s sign on Extreme Rules.
If I'm not mistaken, this was the last official appearance of the Koopa Kids in a new game for ten years until Superstar Saga in 2003. (Unless you count Mario All Stars or Hotel Mario.)
Oh geeze that face yoshi makes when it gets hurt is heartbreaking!
Hey NintendoComplete, sometimes please play the Japanese for NES is Fire Emblem 1, why I asked you for this because It's a been 30 years ago since the first game came out so please play Fire Emblem 1 in English translated.
And now it's been officially translated.
Who is here after the Roman Reigns sign?
The only MAJOR flaw of this game is the Super Scope itself. It ate batteries like popcorn and ran out of juice way too fast.
Wait, this was REAL?
Yup
Mom: Mario with a gun...
... not so kid friendly
Dad: YOU CAN PLAY MORTAL KOMBAT AND
THE MARIO WITH A GUN
I’ve never given this game the time of day. That’s my loss because this game looks awesome.
If only this game were added to the SNES NSO app...
Then again, the hard part would be building a SNES Super Scope to work on the Nintendo Switch whilst using the SNES NSO app.
This Is Basically If DOOM Was For Kids, And Instead Of Using A Keyboard And Mouse, You Use A Gun.
Some might be like, "An official Mario-themed shooter game? Now my life is complete."
When I got an emulator on my Wii I played Yoshi's Safari and when I was playing with the wiimote the controls were awkward and I sucked...
he's not whipped you know, how do you know that Mario just wants to willingly help people? his illumination movie self did (yes i just saw it great movie btw)
Good game weighed down by a terrible piece of shit controller. You are better off playing this on an emulator as it then becomes a fun point and click shooter.
I feel like the Koopaling Robots thing was a hood idea. Surprising that they only used it this once.

I had a scope 6 growing up but never played this one. Looks fun
So they gave Mario some rpg looking thing and call it “family friendly” 💀
