Aquarium Plants in Terra Cotta Pots - Experiment Day 1

  • Beginning of plant experiment plus a brief walk through on how I like to set up terra cotta pots in my fish room.
    The plants I have here are Cryptocorine sp. & Lobelia cardinalis.
    One set has plant matter, dirt, volcanic rock, pea gravel. The other is identical minus the volcanic rock. Curious how much the added minerals from the volcanic rock affect my plant growth.
    All are in my Characodon audax tank for the time being.

    This is almost exactly how I did my last tank. I threw some organic potting soil that i soaked overnight then i put it in my tank and squeezed an old filter over it, threw some trimmings in and mixed it with some crushed coral and epsom salts because we have soft water in the pacific NW and then topped it with an old bag of Eco Complete and added a layer of gravel. The plant growth is phenomenal!

    Definitely interesting and I'm interested in the results too. These pots give your tanks a nice view!

    I love using terracotta pots for growing plants. I just set up a similar experiment using acrylic trays instead so I can see the root growth. Great upload.

    Excellent video. Growing plants in containers is the way to go. Curious to know if the eco-complete impacts the water chemistry?

    • @AndrewPiorkowski
      @AndrewPiorkowski  6 лет назад +3

      Mad Fish Diva I only have the Eco Complete to use in this manner because when it was the only substrate in a 20 gallon long, it really messed with the pH. In small amounts it isn't bad. I normally mix some in with the dirt before adding the gravel cap. These pots are still in my Ameca tank at the end of my summer room tour video. Thanks for watching!

    This is a great idea because man doesn't save on aquarium soil. I'm an American living in Taiwan and I thought about this the other day.
    That I'll be making a video of this today. Purchasing plants in the bed store and how to pot them. The cost between aquarium soil versus the US. The differences in the prices you pay for plants.

    Nice video. What's the difference between before and this experiment ? What's in the pots you already have in the tanks?

    • @AndrewPiorkowski
      @AndrewPiorkowski  6 лет назад +1

      Tycho This was to document the process and show the results. Most of my pots are the results of trying different growth substrates and finding what worked best for that plant. I have never grown these species before. My crypts tend to do better with the eco-complete added, others it doesn't matter as much.

      @@AndrewPiorkowski the reason I asked is I know the benefits of plants in the tank, I just don't want to plant in the gravel or put dirt in or mess with CO2..... and when gravel vac-ING you can move the pots or take them out to do a good clean up job..... just trying to find out if potted plants can be long term success stories.

    What variety is that female guppy? She's gorgeous.

    • @AndrewPiorkowski
      @AndrewPiorkowski  6 лет назад

      Lisa C She is a holdover from a cool strain that developed from mixed fancy guppies. Had a larger colony that had been moved to their own tank. Males were black wag with fins tipped in red. Sadly they were lost to a faulty heater. The ones I have are mostly descended from culled individuals. Still makes me sad almost 2 years later.

    • @lisac5287
      @lisac5287 6 лет назад

      Andrew Piorkowski Sorry to hear that.Some losses are especially hard to take. 20 years ago we lost all our guppies following a long power outage during a winter storm. We had a small outdoor fish room dedicated to just a couple varieties. One variety I especially loved was blue or purple depending on the light angle. A tank full of them was so beautiful. I found the loss incredibly disheartening.
