Whats the difference in "top dead center" and a 1/4 past TDC? Can I set my valves to TDC?

Whats wrong with setting them at top dead center on the compression stroke, works on any motor.

Turn in direction of rotation till intake closes then continue turning till piston is at top dead center, then adjust both valves. repeat for other side.

How often do you have to do a valve lashings on a modded mud motor?

My Briggs dealer buddy does it every 15hrs. Should do it every 40hrs at least
