    Glad you did this review and not me. I never go past 3 times of trying something and you went 8 times. In Spider's defense, they are getting a REAL review and not one of those PAID FOR infomercials that a lot of the BBQ channels do. They will make the changes and I am sure will improve the product. Great video like always and thanks for the shout out.

      F**K**G Pj here’s the problem. Pella is Spider22, and Spider22 is Pella, Of course it’s going to appear simple and easy by the actual company. I’m a regular dude that got this product and I modified nothing to make it appear easier. This was my 2nd go around, I tried the way you speak of, however I scrapped that footage to go with this method which, on the surface , seemed easier. Neither way was simple, both ways were terrible. The cook I did on it however was a Freekin amazing experience.

    It's to expensive. It's a nice attachment. Perfect Draft BBQ Blower Offset Smoker Draft Controller for a 100.00 was a better deal for me. It's temp control and burning efficiency for me. For a off set smoker. I guess what I'm saying is that it's a nice attachment for a Weber but when you have a Weber and an off set smoker you have to invest into the smoker over the Weber sometimes. Lol I've seen conversion kits to change off set smoker to pellet smoker. But I realized it's all about the air flow. Good product review though. Thanks man

      Jaime Jimenez Sweet man thanks. I pisssd a lot of people off with my SNS videos. LOL. This is for people that hsve an existing Weber kettle and don’t have time to babysit a pit. Spider22 definitely hit on a market. I’m making a Jamaican Jerk Pork shoulder today on the Weber kettle using charcoal and wood, and smoking ultra low n slow at 200 degrees. I’m using a PID Controller cause we are going to be gone all day. I agree that the Weber kettle is super efficient, however I don’t know anyone who can go 14 hours and not adjust the vent at all and keep perfect temps. I’ve tried, the longest I’ve gone and stayed in a 15 degree range is almost 3 hours, still very impressive, however I didn’t want to get to far from home. Anyhow, thanks for the support and watching Brother.

    I would have thrown the bag of pellets or two in the kettle so you had weight to push up against when you lifted the Spider unit and keeping your foot on the bottom portion of that foot . Tighten those knobs , done.
    Work smarter, not harder .
    Looking at possibly getting one just for efficiency, I can smoke a tri-tip or brisket easily now on mine but would like more control and less baby sitting.

    I could live with the Dial thermometer if (like you said) it was A minimum of 25 degree implements. It looks like they have a very clever design there. The smartest thing they did was make it where you don’t have to cut a hole in your kettle. If they get it where you can attach it and unattached in five seconds, I may be onto something there. Thx for that review.

    • @handcannon1388
      @handcannon1388 4 года назад +2

      I don't know about five seconds, but five minutes would be doable if the heat inlet tube were longer; with a flange attached inside the kettle - this solves the setup PITA and the problem of the unit accidently coming uncoupled from the kettle during use. That should be worth a free unit, don't you think, Justin?

    Great vid. I had the EXACT same problems you showed while trying to install the unit on my own Original 22. Previous online forum posts stated a bit of a learning curve with the unit. All of them are true. Lining up the 3 tabs on each side was not an easy initial task. The bottom bowl was not the quick install as shown in some previous videos. My final solution: I ended up removing the steel set screws and taking the upper hook plate (which rests on the bottom bowl lip) completely off. Then I inserted the burner through the vent hole and reinstalled the bottom bowl lip hooks and set screws. On the initial run, I couldn’t get it up to temp and had error messages caused by forgetting to insert the probe. Eventually got it to work after I fiddled with the ash pot and even pulled the grip tape off. Since then, I’ve had many successful cooks and watched a ton of pellet smoker vids by your fellow YT posters below for insight. At the end of the day, I actually do like the Spider Grills product. Thank you for posting the video.

      Thanks for replying, bruddah MeatCranium BBQ AND REVIEW. Like so many others who’ve viewed the honest review, I also felt your frustrations. The reality is that once installed, it truly does serve its purpose as a pellet adapter by providing those easy-bake oven features on easy to find NIB or second-hand kettles. No babysitting. That practicality makes sense for the person who also wants to switch back to charcoal and wood taste on their kettle. In my case, I have forgone the base attachment and went with the Paul G channel mod by hanging it on a spare 22 OTP cart. Glad to read you were able to make an enjoyable brisket with the unit and that it was holding temp. Please keep up the good work, as always.

    I think I have the solution to the setup PITA and the heat delivery issue. Chris, you should tell the company to send me one for free. The solution shouldn't cost more than a couple bucks. Make the heat inlet tube longer and attach a flange over it inside the grill. This could either be via screws through it (preferred), or set screws. The kettle would no longer fall off the unit when adjusting height, nor would the heat inlet get accidentally knocked free of the kettle during use. You're welcome, SPIDER-22. Please contact me to find out where to send my free unit. Have a great week, Chris.

    BTW a pellet grill is an electrically operated wood fired outdoor oven

    • @meatcranium4280
      @meatcranium4280  3 года назад

      If you buy a cheap basic Weber kettle you can get one for $65-$75 on EBay or on sale if you look. I had 3 and didn’t pay over $70 for each. To get a great quality pellet smoker like a Camp Chef , (which is on the lower end of the price scale) will set you back $700-$800, no where’s close to the Price of the Spider22. Here is something else to consider, the Weber Kettle works independently of the Spider22, so you can still use Charcoal and Wood, with a pellet smoker you cannot use real Charcoal briquettes and wood. So you have to assess them separately and independently of each other cause some people have had there Weber’s for decades. Spider22 is exactly what it is, an adapter. Now I will agree with your assessment of a pellet grill being an electrically operated wood oven fired outdoor oven, then you must consider a stick burner a air powered wood fired outdoor oven. A Oven is defined as: 1)a small furnace or kiln, 2) An enclosed compartment, as in a kitchen range, for cooking and heat food. Since I cook 95% of everything outside, that is considered my kitchen, so anytime I put a piece of meat in a stick Burner, Pellet smoker, drum smoker, or The Charbroil Big Easy I guess I’m using it as an oven. Thanks for the support and commenting.

    Hmmmm...........I knew it would be a matter of time before a company tried to do exactly this. I would be much happier if Weber were the one to do it.........maybe it would
    be more user friendly when it came to the installation. WTF was that! I give you credit......I would have smashed it! It looks to be a little cheap when it comes to the heat defector/drip pan. That thing is gonna warp, twist, buckle and smoke like crazy when you get dripping down on it. Especially right over where that funneled burn pot is located.
    You mentioned the temp adjustment.........that is gonna be a big problem with major high and low temp swings. They should have went with a P.I.D. controller. That would help
    keep temps manageable.
    I'm not knocking the idea or this companies first attempt at it..........but it's gonna need some major tweaks!
    Stupid Weber.........they're missing the boat! That's funny that Wiley set You up with them.............Wiley is on top of this kind of stuff. Wiley is the first person I saw using the
    Bullseye! And the rest is YT history!

    Do you reckon the struggle you had lowering it with the grill on it so that the kettle sits on the ground was due to the fact that your missing two washers? Seems to me, as a viewer, that it would have lowered and adjusted easier if you had two washers on each side?
    Any way it is a nice concept and contraption for those that are untested in it.
    To be honest, I would rather have what you call a “Merlin” . It is cheaper, and charcoal is cheaper than pellets. You don’t have to plug it in and it is quieter than a pellet pooper.
    You need to go to the hardware store and pick up two extra washers and see if you can install it easier.
    Good honest review as always.

    • @meatcranium4280
      @meatcranium4280  4 года назад

      Big Lew BBQ I had them get back with me about the washer thing and they said that they only give 2 now, something about there tech guys saying it doesn’t need 4, so they need to update there Instruction manual. Merlin is still bulky and limits cooking space, limits you a cook time, and it needs to be babysat. I went 14 hours on my brisket cook yesterday 200 for 91/2 hours and 300 for 41/2 hours, and I was gone the majority of the time. The first generation of Merlin (the one I have) is the best one, the screen on the bottom gathers ash and chokes the fire, leading to erratic temps. The best combo in my opinion for charcoal is the grill stone with foil wrapped around the edges, and a TIPTOPTEMP. Wow!! This was long winded. You always get me going with the Merlin thing. Lol. I think you know that. Lol. Anyhow, thanks for the support and watching Brother.

    At $300... might as well just upgrade to a 18" WSM, and not deal with all that hassle. BTW... if it's electric auger and heating element, I doubt it'll survive many winters outside since it'll still get wet/moist and eventually rust.

      fialee8 Good point. I would keep it inside regardless, it’s small enough to tuck away in a corner. I used it yesterday and it seems to be very well constructed, and durable. Before I would store it for winter I would dump all the pellets out of it. Thanks for the support and watching Brother.

    Great review and Creative concept However, I am left wondering what the point is for this product. Will it produce better tasting food or just give kettle users another toy? That said, I’m looking forward to seeing how your cook turns out. Blessings! Matt

      It would, if it worked as advertised, produce more convenient food by controlling the temp for you and eliminating the need to refuel during the cook. I don't think it could touch charcoal/smoke wood for flavor; I'd be pleased if it did 80% as well in that regard.

It’s at a great price point and you can still use your kettle. I love the concept. Is it necessary? No. Is it cool? O YEAH!! Is it a Gadget/accessory? Yup. Is it the best one I’ve seen? Go to How to Lou web site for a simple explanation of the product. Sorry Meat but you were struggling. Also why bother when you can buy a cheap pellet grill at Sams’ Club for about the same money?

    • @meatcranium4280
      @meatcranium4280  4 года назад

      I posted how to Lou’s channel down below in the description. I don’t know if he did something different or Prepped it prior to filming but I tried to replicate the same thing and it wasn’t fun as you seen. I give it raw, and unrehearsed, it is what it is, maybe his model was the proper size and everything fit perfect. This model was horrible, however I just smoked a brisket and it came out awesome and it performed very good. These models are for the people out there that already have an existing kettle and want to have an option of a pellet smoker, and at $280 that’s a great price point. MeatCranium BBQ AND REVIEW I guess what I was thinking my nephew bought a Signature or whatever Sams brand is for $325 dollars. Basically the same cost. I’m sure I am stubborn but I think part of the satisfaction of grilling or smoking is managing the cook. To me, pellet grills are basically ovens.
