It wasn’t streaming services that made the iPod obsolete…..It was the IPhone itself. You basically have the IPod built right into your phone so no need for a second device.
Exactly, it’s a better value and more convenient
That's what he said at the end.
That’s the conclusion to the video
That started happening since 2005, with MP3 capable mobile phones.
If you don’t cannibalise your own products someone else will.
An hypothetical new Ipod should have:
A better DAC with support for Hi Res audio formats, and not just ALAC (apple codec), should support FLAC, WAV, DSD, etc.
3.5 mm jack plug, yeah the "old thing", why? Because most of headphones with maximun quality sound have the 3.5 jack plug, ¿what about the airpods? Sorry but that crap is nothing compared to a real good headphone cable.
The new ipod should be like an audiophiles DAPs in the market, oriented to have a better sound quality than the most of smartphones.
DAPs like Fiio or Sony are a good example of a modern music player.
never read such facts before
Not only this, but in addition to having never should have discontinued the iPod in the first place, the new iPods need to have FM radio functionality with support for RDS and HD Radio as standard.
Apples target market isn’t worried about audio quality.
@@brbBRAZZERS Sadly
@@brbBRAZZERS You’d be right looking at its consumer market, but ever heard of the Mac Pro or studio? With their insane amounts of ram and ability in the studio to make all ram v-ram they’re an audiophiles and video-editors dream. Along with that the new m1 max MacBook Pro has a far higher quality headphone jack and an SD card slot making it great for audiophiles.
But I'm pretty sure if they release a new clickwheel model tomorrow with SSD storage and the ability to integrate with streaming services, it will sell very very well
No
Times have definitely changed to the point we have phones with 1tb of storage and incredibly powerful processors. The only thing that Could get anyone to buy a device solely for music consumption would be high quality output which is a market that is niche to say the least. There’s absolutely no gain to creating a device solely built for music anymore. Nostalgia or not
@@Chris-dy1cb These audiophile grade media players do exist today but like you said these are for a niche group of people who want the absolute highest quality audio codecs that do not exist in a mass market smartphone and are willing to pay more than your average smartphone.
Didn't Netflix think about that idea but abandoned it?
How would it be better than an iPhone?
The one feature that we lost when the iPod Nano died in 2017 was the built in FM radio. It was a great tuner, and I loved to listen to the radio when I was out walking the dogs. Also, unlike a radio streaming service, I didn't have to have a data plan to listen to the radio.
Other smartphones have enabled FM radio on their devices. Why not Apple?
FM Radio. That’s sadly another dinosaur. You can buy pocket radios but these days people stream or use DAB. No way will Apple incorporate such an old format.
Just get a Sandisk player. It’s everything ya need
@Yvng remixer yes, I have a lot of pocket radios. Big fan. But it’s something generally over fifties listen to.
THIS!!! and you could pause the radio and go back in time on it and all. It was my fav thing about the Ipod nano
I use tunein radio app to listen to my favorite fm radio channels
Jon, these historic… documentary(?) videos on Apple and other software is just… gosh guys, so SO amazing. Even thinking toward the future man, these videos will mean something even more.
Appreciate you man!
@@jon4lakers facts
THANK YOU for actually bringing the Mac exclusivity of the iPod to light. I've seen so many iPod retrospectives that gloss over that fact that I almost believed I was living in some kind of Mandela effect lol. The switch to windows compatible was HUGE at the time. I remember iPod going from something I had only seen in that niche Apple store nobody knew about, to something all the cooler, rich kids now had.
I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max, but still wanted to own an iPod touch... The guys at the store thought it was a waste of money, but if my phone is charging, the iPod is an awesome and compact backup.
I will never forget the feeling I had when I bought my first iPod (iPod Mini 1st Gen Blue color) in 2004 for my 14th birthday. I was seriously the first person in my grade at school to have one and I swear after a few months ALL of my friends either got one or wanted one.
But the feeling of buying a song on iTunes and being able to instantly put it on my iPod was something I’d never experienced before in my life. I no longer had to carry around a case of CD’s and a Walkman, it was all right there. That was probably the most amazing consumer experience I’ve ever had. Waking up the next day and getting to bring my iPod to school was the most exciting feeling. I wish I could experience that kind of feeling again with a product.
This aged like milk very quickly rip ipod 2001 - 2022
Now this is the kind of video of yours I like. Between this and the Lucid video, I remember why I subscribed. I’m not a fan of the “Don’t Make a Mistake” videos, but these ones are awesome. Love this history, perspective, detail, and flow. Great video.
Aaaand now it’s not ‘basically’ dead, it’s actually dead.
The nostalgia is real ❤️
Such a cool time. Was still in highschool when this all happened.
Still remember the first person I ever saw with an iPod.
As someone who has enjoy the iPods from my first one on 2003, I'll be glad to get a refresh version if ever released. I'm full an Android user that also uses the iPad pro and a Galaxy Watch, a new ipod classic, with a headphone jack, but internet connected, could be the greatest companion device to offline music enjoying.
Oof, no internet connection please.
@@pietrocavicchioli6128 I just want a re-issue of the classic with SSD storage and bigger storage capacities. I bought two vintage last year (I've only had nanos) and they are by far my favorite device ever. I plan on SSD modding them when the hard drives go out eventually.
@@kamicokrolock I have a classic 5.5th gen too, but like... I don't think you are actually thinking of SSD modding, and if you are... Please don't, it's a stupid choice man, I'm saying it for your own good, go for SD modding instead, the capacity of modern SD cards is big, but they don't heat nor consume like full fat SSDs.
(yeah, both ssd and sd modding exist for classic iPods, but one is practical, the other... More of a meme honestly)
@@kamicokrolock it needs to have a big enough storage like 356 GB I have a ton of music to put on my iPod
I absolutely love videos on Apple’s history and product history as well.
It’s one thing to go through and just show still shots of each generation of a specific model along with the specs. But the story, development, and progress of the different models is what brings it all together.
Honestly, this is probably one of my favorite videos of yours.
I have a Gen 3 iPod that I use to this day. I basically have to leave it plugged in, but I love it. I always preferred the scroll wheel to a touch screen. It's easy to operate it without looking at it or needing to unlock a screen.
How do you use it if it has to be plugged in all the time? You just sit in the corner and jam?
It was definitely a stepping stone to conceptualize the iPhone. I believe iPod Classic was kept around because it can power higher end earphones without an adaptor, so audiophiles would still buy it. I noticed a lot of retail stores uses the iPod Touch, I was shopping in Uniqlo and saw their staff uses iPod Touch and thought to myself so there’s still a demand just not really for consumers… perhaps if iPod Touch gets discontinued, retail stores will have to buy iPhone SE instead.
Most likely replacement would probably be either the SE or iPad Mini/iPad 10.2”
Yeah there’s those but like target a lot of stores have some android version of it with a scanner built into it. But the iPod classic thing is probably right. That’s why I bought a classic years later and fixed to look new. Still looks so pretty.
I use my iPod Classic everyday. Plus I have a iPod Touch 7th generation. Why? Because I never owned a iPod Touch until 2020 and I call it my little toy. It’s in product Red and I keep it in my pocket all the time and it has a headphone jack.
I think they keep the itouch because it's a great way to get kids into the Apple ecosystem.
@@lilbtyt7928 I still use my iPod Classic.
Did I miss the part where “the return of the iPod” was talked about?
Thank you for bringing this up! I love my 7th gen iPod Touch! Everyone always comments about how small my phone is, but they're always amazed when I tell them it's an iPod. They're always like "I didn't know they still made those." Lol

@@boxii2065 I have a phone too lol
I love mine too. In product Red and it’s just fun and with the A10 fusion chip I’m running iOS 15.5.1 I think…I can’t keep up. But, it runs it well. And I have a lot of iDevices to compare it to.

2001~2022
This didnt aged well
I know some peoppe are holding hope that Apple will try to revive the iPod, but let's be honest, is there even a market for it?
Let's try to think of the ideal iPod. Music player, video player, streaming service integration, multiple file type support, a headphone jack, speakers. The cheapest Android phone can probably do all of that, and have a phone and a full internet browser. Why would one buy an iPod when they already have a phone that can do all of that?
Unfortunately, an iPod revival would mostly be for the nostalgia gimmick.
When you could only afford a shuffle : ))))))
Yeah dude
I found my old iPod nano 7, charged it, turned it on and it worked first time sounding very good and still as practical as it used to be!
I still have the 160GB iPod classic I bought new in 2007. For years that was my go-to device for storing and accessing my library but it has been completely usurped by my iPhone with 256GB of internal storage. There is no reason for most people to own an iPod when the iPhone can be had with up to a terabyte of internal storage and provides access to music streaming virtually anywhere via the 5G radio. The iPhone is a great smartphone but it truly is the ultimate portable music player.
It is.. I agree but, my iPhone still isn’t my iPod Touch. Which is my little toy. I also have a iPad Pro and a iPad Mini but, I sure do like my iPod Touch 7th Generation. Which I’m sure will be the last iPod ever. But a cool iPod Touch that looks like my iPad Pro would be cool with a M1 chip in it. Yes I’m dreaming..but, it would be a cool little toy.
@@tturner12341 yes, an iPod pro with an M1 would be amazing!
Still use my modded iPod Classic from time to time. Its nice to walk around outside without a phone tethering you to reality and just listen to music without interruptions sometimes.
Also, shoutout to DankPods. I got a modded Classic because of his videos.
Man I remember when my Mom bought me the iPod Nano Gen 1. That thing was amazing… I wouldn’t get a new iPod till iPod Nano 5 and later the last Gen Shuffle! I’ve been on iPhone since then. My early Teens to Adult years were some great times! RIP Steve Jobs thank you for being apart of my Childhood through Adult years! Great Video Jon!
The nano was brilliant. Too bad everyone wanted it so badly that mine was stolen from me twice.
Even one at church... Unbelievable eh?
@@nomore-constipation Wow WTF Dude… I’m sorry
I wish they would refresh the iPod just one more time to show us what a modern iPod could be
2003: you’re device is too Big, get a smaller device it’s more cool
2022: Your device is too small, get a bigger device it’s more cool
2003 : WE DON'T WANT FOLDING PHONES AGAIN
2022 : Folding phones are cool
The iPod 5 was my first Apple product, I used it for a solid 4 years! It wasn't as fast as newer phones but God was it comfortable. I'm really hoping Apple revives it with a much needed physical upgrade like they did with the mini 6
I still rock an iPod. I hate having music interrupted when I get a message or a call. Also, it's easier to mod an iPod to increase storage space.
The iPod walked so the iPhone could run. The hype for Apple was real when the iPhone was launched and the iPod was what put the company on the map for that moment.
This video did NOT age well!!
It's over guys, iPods are now officially dead.
RIP IPOD
Nice blast from the past as I remembered all the tech I once owned.
Wow you totally brought me back to why I fell in love with Apple in the first place back in 2001 when I bought my first PowerMac G4. (JMO) Apple is poised to bring a better version of the “metaverse”. They have been building the foundations of it since Steve came back to Apple in ‘97. As you said the introduction of iTunes created a path towards an ecosystem that a lot of loyal users would rather not use technology than to leave their beloved iCloud. With everything that Apple has invented or put into place has built on that foundation to push the future forward. If that future is a “metaverse” Apple has and will create better versions of it. Not only does Apple have the data from iTunes to the iPhone Apple doesn’t need the iPod because it was the precursor to the future. The devices that are no longer with us are only the breadcrumbs liking Apples past to what they will do in the future.
I have two iPods and I use them all the time, one in my car is the way to go, the other I take with me to hear music when I don’t want my phone to bug me with stuff going off.
I love my iPod and I always use it while hiking. The battery lasts forever, is fast to recharge and uses a lot less battery than keeping your
iPhone on.
I wouldn't mind seeing the iPod being updated just one more time. Something for 2022. I don't know I'd buy it!
My first Apple product was a Nano IPod I was 14yrs old . Good memories ♥️
Same!!
Dope video like always 🙂👍. Love your videos. I use my iPod nano every day 😃. Have a great day . Cheers from Denmark
Video might not have killed the radio star, but music streaming definitely killed the iPod..
The smartphone killed it more
The iPod certainly killed the album format. The word ‘shuffle’ took on a new meaning.
Welp, RIP IPOD the end of an era
I wish they’d do the iPod classic with m1 to connect to AirPods and update to lightening then introduce iPhone 14 with usb-c
I loved the shuffle… wished they’d bring that back
To me the most impressive work came from his engineers and design personnel. He was a person with a goal and knew how to push people in to reaching those goals. From what I understand, he was a straightforward sort of guy.
Me being a mostly android user the IPod touch was my favorite Apple product. I used the hell out of it and I have always bought an updated version of it. I would upgrade then give the old one to my husband. After waiting for the iPod to get an update..I told myself I won’t get a new one. I bought an old iPhone 7 and use it for my music.
It was a good little product but once the iPhone came out it was done.
welp, ipod is discontinued, this aged much well
From a non Apple user ever, it was very informative. Super interesting. Thanks.
RIP Steve Jobs he changed every gadget category with iMac for personal computers, the iPod for music , the iPhone for reinventing the phone and then the iPad for tablet pc wow
As soon as music streaming services became a thing and you could use your phones for unlimited amounts of music, iPods became completely unnecessary.
It's not unnecessary at all I use my ipod still I don't like streaming services
@@theo5675 to each their own. I would hate having to carry two devices all the time.
@@theo5675 Yep, I have about 600 CD's at home ripped to iTunes and on my iPods. I have enough monthly bills that I don't want to pay to stream my music when I already own it.

The mid 90s to mid to late 2000s, about a 10-15 year period, we saw more innovation and diversity of tech than any period before or since. As tech has mostly become a commodity, a daily tool we don't give much thought to today, that period had more excitement and more choice for those who wanted to continue doing things the old fashion way and those who were excited to try what the future had to offer. As a tech enthusiast growing up in that era, it's truly sad that innovation and choice especially is mostly a thing of the past and even more sad it is increasingly rare to get excited for where tech is headed.
I agree with u I was born in 1996 but I think tech stagnation started when the 2010s started I'm a huge tech enthusiasts and if u look hard enough there is tech I'm excited for but it's like 10 to 20 years off
It would be amazing if they can bring back the classic iPod.
Thanks so much for this wonderful video. Enjoyed every step of it, so many good memories seeing all my old iPods passing. A beautiful trip down memorylane!
One year that my sister gave me her iPod classic for Christmas. She didn’t want it anymore since she had an iPhone 4. My mother gotten an iPod shuffle on Christmas but,she never opened it. I did inherited it but , I did somehow lost the little thing. It was in my backpack in this one pocket. I don’t know how I lost it. I have been using an iPhone since late July 2014. I did bought a refurbished iPod touch in blue which is the 5th generation. Of course that I even bought a newer iPod touch in pink that is a the 7th generation. I bought it for as a backup for my iPhone if the BT is not working in my iPhone. The iPod touch reminded me of my first iPhone 5c in the size of the screen. Using an iPod touch these days looked liked an small iPhone with the home button. iPhone that are so much advanced than an iPod touch.
Love this video! The nostalgia of where it all started 😍
I still use my iPods and have sealed ones and have bought sealed iPod classic in 2020 for $1000 and I have iPhones and other Apple products but for me I’ll never stop using iPods ever
my first ipod was the ipod touch 4th gen. my first ever apple product. i thought i was so cool having one
Will say for hard core gym goers as I was back in 2007-2011, that 4th/5th gen shuffle was great. Leave your phone in your bag or locker, and just your music clipped to your clothing, and maybe a dumb watch to time workouts. No screens to worry about or stare at.
My love for Apple started with iPod 😎👍❤️
I worked at Best Buy in 2005 and I remember being so stoked for the iPod video! It was the first year that black was an option and man did me and my GF at the time use it on a 5 hour road trip since we were in the back seat the whole ride. We used a headphone splitter (a terrible one with super low impedance so AWFUL quality lol but worked…kinda) and listened to tons of music and tons of videos downloaded. This was right when music started winding down on being good too ironically. We were in college at the time just over half way done, so perfect timing to use our 200gb+ we had all accumulated by combining all our music (me and my friends from high school and our gf’s).
Ipod touch is what got me into the apple ecosystem as a kid, all the jailbreaking support made it that much better, after the ipod i just couldnt look at android, and still cant, so what im trying to say is, their ipod line up has done a great job to bring in returning customers from young age, hence why it is still available. Still use my classic tho!
😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨
As a musician. I still love my iPod as I can use it as a completely separate device for my music. It also means I save space on my own phone

All we need with the iPod is bloody universal support.
i wish i still had my ipod. it had that clickie wheel in the middle and i used to love scrolling thru 1000s of my songs on the school bus.
I'm switching to a flip phone soon but I'm going to keep an ipod around for listening to music on the go and a couple of my favorite mobile games
I love my iPod Touch. I got it for music, extra storage, and battery to accompany my phone. I have the 7th gen, had it since release. I don’t see myself needing to upgrade it yet, it’s also running iOS 12.3 which is what version it was the first day I got it.
I grew up using an iPod Touch, my first being the 3rd gen. I would love to see an 8th, I would buy it (I assume my current iPod would need an upgrade by then anyway) But it seems unlikely it’ll happen
If Apple Released a new IPod Classic with Bluetooth and Apple Music support I’d buy it day one.
8:16 it’s mall in Poland Warsaw and it’s called BlueCity
i just got an ipod touch 256 gb as a dedicated music player, it was just under 600$ CAD
the cheapest phone with that storage capacity was an iphone 11 starting at 1100$ CAD
it is mainly for my my work radio so i can still use my phone, this was a perfect fit
Very nicely done video, thanks! Keep it up, mate.
iPod was my childhood 🥹 I had a sidekick in one pocket and an iPod mini in my other pocket and when the Sony PSP got released omg my life was complete all my 3 favourite gadgets of all time
I bought a used 16gb 5th gen iPod nano several years ago. Not only do I still own it, but I have it connected to my 2013 Hyundai Elantra GLS. It still works like the day I bought it. Little dent on the rear, otherwise not a mark on it.
This a great exposé. Thank you, Jon. It's now 2024, and I'm glad I still have my iPod Nano 7th Gen, Just love it. I really prefer a distraction-&-big-tech-free device for listening to music etc (with Apple's wired Earbuds) when I'm walking, and it's small & light, no radiation/EMR issues. Much safer and more convenient than a phone.
Nice video Jon, nice trip down memory lane with the iPod history lesson!

Back in the day I used to have the Motorola SLVR..a way cooler version of the RAZR that had iTunes built-in.
it's not the last iPod it's the latest iPod. Courage
tech’s are more advanced today, if they comes up with new ipod with more advanced features. something extraordinary. I would definitely buy it.
I think a lot of people are rediscovering iPods now as they have shot up in price considerably recently with the RUclipsr “DankPods” really bringing them back.
If Apple was to finally bring a good update to the iPod touch, I’d buy it.

The only reason that iPod is no longer a hit item is because Spotify Pandora slacker radio although streaming apps allow you to listen to music without storing the music on your device. And everybody has iPhones or Android devices that can hold your music regardless so it's one device nowadays. Instead of two
I rather have the music myself instead of streaming
I never stream and was never a fan of, I would always want own my songs I have

iPod was really a big hit. Some of my cousins owned it when I was in elementary and during high school, it’s already iPod touch by then. I had the experience to use it and also got myself an iPhone 4s later on. Now I’m using iPad Air 4 and still uses iPhone X (bc I don’t have to upgrade just yet). I love how Apple make their products premium that it could last for years. It maybe a bit pricey but I could say it’s a great investment since I don’t have to frequently to change devices every other year.
If they made a modern iPod classic looking device, strictly for music and nothing else, able to run off of owned music from iTunes or streaming like Apple Music I would be buy it in a heartbeat
I still have my iPod touch 5th gen and I use it almost every day for listening to my music. I like having my own library of music so the iPod touch allows me to have that and also allows me to use an Android for my phone.
If the 7th gen iPod touch had an A13 chip instead of an A10 I would definitely buy it just play Apple Arcade games and listen to music
Wow! What a incredible video! It really made my think about Apple history!
I honestly wish that I kept my old iPods even if it was just to see what music was on it. I would still love a iPod classic 7th gen
Damn seeing this video brings back my 3GS what a great phone it was way back in I guess 2007-08 ish
iPod Mini… Got one for Xmas when I was 10 and I’ve never not had an Apple device since, 18 years later!
Fantastic video Jon, the iPod is my all time favourite product. I had a gen 4 back in the day and I absolutely loved it. I never went a day without using it.
I would LOVE an iPod with lots of storage, a great DAC, a headphone jack of course, BlueTooth as well, and WiFi but limited in the same way as a Kindle, so you can only access music apps like Spotify/Apple Music/RUclips Music/SoundCloud etc. (Although if Apple were to do this they'd probably limit it to just Apple Music) That would be a perfect mix of the advantages of streaming services, but without the distractions from a phone! I think it'd also be cool if they maybe had a separate music file (MP3/FLAC etc) app, as their Apple Music app is merged with this at the moment, having their own app to just play music files would be great!!
If Apple introduces the ipod, it should be like iPod nano touch 2010
