Tesla Cybertruck Towing Cybertruck Cross Country!! 2,400 Mile Road Trip Towing 10k Lbs.

- My Tesla Cybertruck delivery was a miracle all in itself. It was a recipe of "right place at the right time" and I was so fortunate to be able to take delivery of my brand new Foundation Series Cybertruck while I was in Salt Lake City picking up another Tesla Cybertruck that needed to be delivered to Florida.
With 2 Cybertrucks in hand, the decision was quickly made to tow my Cybertruck with the other Cybertruck that I was supposed to drive to Florida anyways. We had a trailer, we had the Cybertruck, all we had to do was deliver the duo 2,400 miles away in Central Florida.
The original trip was planned to pick up the EVject Cybertruck in Salt Lake City and deliver it to Orlando, FL for a Make A Wish event. This was a simple 2,400 mile trip, although it was with the new Tesla Cybertruck and would be a great opportunity to learn about the road tripping capabilities of the next generation Tesla. Little did any of us know, we would actually have the chance to tow nearly the full towing capacity of the Cybertruck all the way across the country.
Coming in at 9,546 lbs, this load is near the top of the towing capacity of the truck, which is 11,000 lbs. With plenty of experience towing over the years, I felt comfortable with the setup and getting the truck loaded, secured and balanced on the trailer was easy enough. After getting acquainted with the pre-sets for tow mode on the Cybertruck, it was time to set off across the country.
What I learned very quickly on this trip is that the middle of this country lacks volume, and modern chargers. Although Tesla boasts the most reliable charging network, which was once again realized on this road trip, in the middle of the country, its mostly V2 (150 kW max) and/or spaced too far out to be able to charge less at each stop. Because of this, I was needing to charge between 90 and 100% for most of the trip, certainly the first half.
The things I thought I wouldn't like about the Cybertruck for towing ended up being some of the shining features of the truck. For starters, I really thought 4 wheel steer was going to be super awkward backing a trailer, but it turned out to be amazing at backing a trailer, and even more amazing at the tight turning radius this thing was capable of. No other truck I have ever towed with could come close to the maneuverability of this truck.
Next, I wasn't so sure about the trailer brake situation with the Cybertruck. But it turns out that having the manual brake set to the right scroll wheel on the Cybertruck was actually amazing and super convenient. When you think about it, a traditional trailer brake has a manual toggle but it is a reach away from the steering wheel. On the Cybertruck, it's right there on the wheel, meaning it's easy to get to and effective.
I was unfortunately met with bad weather pretty much the whole trip, and coupled with climbing mountains numerous times, the range was less than I had expected. That said, overall the range was a theoretical 125-ish miles on average. Some stretches more, some stretches less. I believe my best stretch of the trip would have been the equivalent of 140 miles range at 100%.
Although I was towing near the top end of the capacity, I was hoping to see the bottom end of range closer to 150 miles. Taking away the head winds and mountains, I think the Cybertruck was certainly capable of getting at least 150 miles on a charge, but the more important thing I discovered on this trip was having accessible chargers for towing, at 60-ish miles apart, was more important than range. Charging for an hour or so at every stop was extremely painful, and took my usual 1k miles per day all the way down to about 600 miles a day tops.
All things considered, we still have a ways to go before long distance towing with EV's is convenient. If it's shorter distance, there's no other truck I would rather tow with than the highly maneuverable, powerful, and capable Tesla Cybertruck!

You have a rolling backup battery in case of running out. Awesome.
😎
This is why even Tesla messed up on the port location. The Cybertruck (and all trucks) should have it on the passenger front so you can pull in to any V3 (or V2) while towing without blocking another stall.
Nah, they just need more appropriate towing charging stalls
How many owners are going to tow? 0.001%
Great video! I watched the whole thing straight through. It looks like your charging costs averaged about 33¢ a mile. That's not bad at all, considering the weight you were towing and some of the terrain on your trip. A couple of years ago, I towed a GMC Canyon pickup on a trailer with my 2002 GMC Yukon XL Denali from Cape Cod, MA to Lake City, FL. I averaged 11 mpg. At an average of $3.50 per gallon for regular gas, it came out almost exactly what your cost per mile was. Interesting. Thanks for posting this video. I learned a lot and enjoyed riding along with you.
And with more average conditions, it would be slightly better. V4 rollout is really what needs to happen though. Shorter gaps in chargers and full charging speed the CT is capable of
🙋♂️THANKS BEARDED 🤗 FOR DOCUMENTING THIS JOURNEY…THINGS WILL ONLY GET BETTER IN THE FUTURE 🥶💚💚💚
Agreed, it's all up from here, and I love how this thing tows!
Incredible video - amazing editing and cutting - I’m sure you spent a lot of hours putting this together. Your content just keeps getting better and better!!
Thanks a bunch! You have no idea how much time I spent on this video 😂😂
I get stressed enough, at busy Superchargers, with a Model3. I can’t imagine how’d I’d do with two Cybertrucks. You’re a patient man and an excellent driver.
😂😂
Awesome hard-core towing test. Efficiency was surprisingly better than I expected! Great video!
Cheers
THis is insane, drive 1 hours charge 1 hours...drive 1 hour..charge 1 hours ...or more...Video just too long to watch all of it, but I did like it. You proved to me I would never buy and EV to tow or travel no matter how cool they look....
Painful to watch this vlog
Great video. Awesome effort. Think I'm going with the Silverado EV but it looks like the Cyber truck does well. Thank you.
Wow, you got experience one of the most challenging and dangerous stretches of highway (US-6 Utah and I-70 Mountain passes Colorado) during a snow storm and at night. You did well for a flat lander 👍.
It was cake 😎
I'm looking forward to your video for the trip to California.
Coming VERY soon!
I live in Kansas City, Missouri and frequently commute to Jefferson City and pass through Columbia. Came here to say that the Clark Ln supercharger is the best in Columbia. However, Bandannas is DEFINITELY not the best BBQ in Missouri. Try Q39 in KC.
Great video. Love watching these road trips.
Cheers
I love watching your road trips but the one thing that triggers my OCD is how long you delay plugging in. When I hit the charger I don’t do anything till I’m plugged in and charging.
😂😂
It’s because back in the day if you plug in first, it resets the trip data, so it became muscle memory to debrief first
“I don’t know how it got loose but it did and I fixed it.”
^Smart trailering 👍. Always double check the load and the wheel hubs. Stuff happens with trailers.
I don’t know why people don’t check their load every stop. I may forget a time or two but it’s so important. I’ve seen all kinds of stuff happen that doesn’t make sense. Safety first when you could literally kill the people on the road around you!
That was a fun and exciting journey. We have a Model X and rarely open the Falcon doors, but when we do, they tend to draw more attention than we prefer. I can only imagine the CT (*2)!
It was INSANE!
@@BeardedTeslaGuy We are on opposite sides of O-Town. Need to hook up and buy you a beer and chat all things EV. 🍻
wow you got in ocala v3 without issues? good job. that place is always packed.
Yea, and its really tight getting in there too, but no big thing for the Cybertruck!
I would already own an electric truck if it weren't for the long distance towing problem. We want to be able to take our Airstream out West a couple times a year and needing to stop every 120 miles just wouldn't cut it. It already takes way too long to drive that far, but needing to stop and charge for an hour or more so frequently, would make the trip not worth while.
I'm anxiously awaiting the day that batteries become affordable enough to give us 300 miles of range while towing. That would be a game changer.
Then the Silverado 4WT is the answer for you. And it charges at 350kW plus. Drive for 3 hours while towing and stop and rest for half an hour and get going again. Check out the online videos for it. Towing something like on this video (or your airstream) will get you 300 miles or close to it. So your game changer is already here.
@@junehanzawa5165Need chargers that can support 350kw first. Cybertruck is 350kw capable at least, if not more.
@@josded EA, EVgo, Mercedes Benz's charging network (opened to all) and others already have 350kw chargers out there. And once the actual charging cabinets are upgraded, V4's will also support 350kw.
Yes, the Cybertruck is 800v, but it has not been enabled yet by Tesla. It's software limited as they gather more charging information in the wild. However, the Cybertuck has a battery half the size of the Silverado, and the gentleman asking said he wanted 300 miles of range while TOWING. The Silverado 4WT gives him that right now. When not towing, it has a range of over 450 miles.
I think 150 miles for a full tank of gas towing a load like this is about right, so really it’s the charging speed needs to be better, and locations more accessible for towing
First of all, I actually watched the entire video.Great video dude. I am interested in the cyber trucks towing, but my need would be to tow a camper. How do you think that would have been a far as range. A camper would have been less weight (depending on the exact camper) but the camper would probably have more wind resistance. You have experience towing a 3500lb camper with your model Y. How do you thing the cybertruck would have done as far as range towing that exact same camper?
I think it’ll be similar honestly
Could you plug in the mobile charger from the CyberTruck being towed to the one driven even if it only gives it 32amp 240..my guess is it won't charge while being driven for safety reasons haha would be cool
I would have had the energy screen up the whole time…. I do on every road trip…
With the trip card, you get all the details you need right there
Could have always switch trucks after charging them both, so you have a 'spare' truck to get there... ;)
Let’s go!!!!
Boom!
Great video. How come you have dark mode on in the daytime? Looks so weird and hard to see lol
It wasn’t my truck and I didn’t bother with it
heck, you should have charged both trucks then burn both of their batteries by swaping the trucks. then sit at a charger and charge both at same time
Way too much work to swap trucks
This trailer was too tight to safely and efficiently load and unload solo
Question: could you have charged both trucks to 100% and swapped the tower/towed when necessary to keep going? Then stop and charge them both at once.
is autopilot working or just adaptive cruise control?
just finished watching the whole thing. I really hope Tesla increases the standard range capacity to atleast 150 kwh. after owning a tesla model y for 2 years as a daily and long road trip vehicle i really do hate how often i have to stop at superchargers.
It’s one area I really like about what Rivian has done. They added larger pack to bring range up where they were short
how many hours did this trip take in full? how many hours would it have taken using an ice truck? Thank you for a great video.
I essentially left on Sunday and made it home super late Wednesday (technically Thursday morning)
29 stops...You must be related to Kyle (although for entirely different reasons).
I think my count was 30 total stops, but thats because I didn't film the last top off on the Turnpike
Don't go to Grand Junction. It's not only that it's 120 kW, it's 6 miles off I-70, adding 12 miles to your drive. Too late. 😁 Plan the Parachute Supercharger instead.
I dont think I had a choice if I remember right
@@BeardedTeslaGuy Yes, you were a special case with the tow. But I always plan to charge at Parachute to get to Green River, and from Green River to get to Parachute. .... I think of Parachute as a way of parachuting out of Grand Junction.
Too bad you can not plug in the Cybertruck you're hauling and level two charge the Cybertruck you're driving. This would really help extend your drive time. Even better if you could charge both vehicles while charging.
Would be cool if you could do it while driving!
you need to leverage that secret connector to the battery pack found underneath... which could be intended for range extender. Wait, what am I saying... you wouldn't be charging while driving but piggy backing a 2nd battery pack.
54:58 This is why we need 500 range Teslas and v4 superchargers that charges to 80%(400 miles) in less than 18 minutes.
Its probably the extra weight of that accelerator rivet killing the consumption.
53:30 😂
Guy pulling Cybertruck with Cybertruck: I hate attention.
Yea, I didn’t realize how bad it would be. I knew it would be a lot, but the level in which people take liberties with someone else’s car astounds me
@BeardedTeslaGuy Attention is one of the reasons I will be sticking with my Lightning. So is the $33K after rebate price tag (ty, Elon!).
Unfortunately, Tesla's lineup isn't well-suited for those who like to avoid attention.
Anyway, nicely done on the video, and I wish you all the best with your Cybertruck.
I’d like to see range on road tires.
Same!
What would you do on these 1 hour charging stops? Edit & upload videos? Sleep?
Edit! So much work to do!
So what was the cents/mile of your trip? Final cost and miles
I literally show the cost of charging after every stop. Each time I also show the rolling total
I love the cybertruck, but the biggest flaw is lack of front charging port. I hope the next revision moves the charging port to the front passenger side.
They need better towing stalls. Location of port doesn’t matter
@@BeardedTeslaGuy true enough because the current towing stalls seem to be more designed for someone using a rear bike rack
Do you think you should disconnect your trailer at a supercharger when charging?
Absolutely, unless there's no one there and you can slide in and out without preventing people from charging
Yep, that should be obvious. 😊
If I don't disconnect and block chargers, I don't leave my car so I can move if the chargers fill up. Leaving the car and blocking Chatham would be a d#$% move.
Can’t pigtail into the other truck? That would be a nice option 😂
Would have been really coll
(1:18:00) Illinois worse roads, no. I’ve lived in both Illinois and Pennsylvania and Pa is much worse. They put stop signs at the end of a merging ramp to get on the highway. They don’t even know the purpose of their ramps.
🤣
Come to hawaii
You do know that there is a recall on the cybertruck.. The gas pedal can get stuck. All trucks are on the recall
Strange, the Cybertruck doesn’t use gas 🤷♂️
@@BeardedTeslaGuy 🤣😂
I cant believe you need to stop on average every 100 mile! My 20 year old Jaguar 4.2 R does 300 mile towing and almost 400 mile not towing between stops and all with no stress! EV the future? I think not.
Don’t confuse range with distance between chargers. You can’t go exactly 100% of range and poop out a charger right there
50 amp plug, but 40 amp breaker. That's NOT right! Tesla should have made sure it would pull a full 50 amps for an 11.5kw charge. Tesla should have 19.2kw level two AC charging.
It’s likely software. I had no issue using 32 amp mobile connector at 32 amps just last week. So something enhanced with software
Looks like a nightmare 😂
Disappointing the autopilot visualization doesn’t understand that you’re towing (you had a ghost semi tailgating you the whole way).
You could charge off the 2nd truck in a pinch.
I should have watched the whole video first.
Lol
No he is not the 1st to toe with a ev truck long distance but probably with towing a cyber truck.
That’s what I said I thought? First Cybertruck towing Cybertruck, maybe even Cybertruck towing long distance
LoL... your going to spend about 14 hours charging your truck for this trip.. LoL.
28:47 F that, urinal bag under the tonneau cover, then throw in garbage can.
I can't believe the crap EV owners have to go through on a road trip.
Why do you sound surprised that people are upset with you blocking charging stations. You have done videos about people blocking/parking in charging spots. You have a motorized trailer arm. 10 minutes to unhook is ridiculously slow. Sounds like you should practice more. Like, every time you stopped. I like you BTG but, practice what you preach. Lead by example. Empty or not.
I don’t block chargers, I was 3 minutes from being done and I told him I was getting ready to unplug. He didn’t like that so I hurried along. If you don’t know how a WDH, plus trailer unhook takes 10 minutes, you probably don’t know much about towing heavy loads
It’s really too bad Tesla is generating all of this unnecessary negative attention for themselves with not rolling out the true generation for charging infrastructure prior to the cyber truck. It’s fine for people who are willing to do that sort of thing, but the vast majority of people aren’t going to want to stop every 60 miles at a version two charger and wait an hour to charge. That’s insane. That could have been prevented, but in typical Tesla fashion they are like a bull in a China shop just barreling forward and things smash besides what other car companies considered impossibilities their own reputation. I’m sure they will get it right eventually, but they will build themselves up and unnecessary cognitive barrier in the mines of many people, and have to work harder down the road.
V4 can’t roll out fast enough!
If you don't want the attention then the Cybertruck is definitely not for you
100%
How much is your payment and how much down
A lot and a lot
😂I need advice plz how much should I put down can you at least share down payment
@@IAMJESUSPROOF Pay cash, problem solved.
28 stops, wtf!
It was actually 30 because I didn’t show the last top off
