That’s White Bay Jost Van Dyke, the boats at anchor or mornings are sitting into the breeze, there’s no tide or current or very little. The boats on auto pilot engines on jib out and clearly the helm has been left unattended. The problem here is the charter companies want bookings so all folk with very little experience out on the water, recipe for disaster

This was a strange accident. Doesn't appear that the starboard engine is running, only the port engine. As was mentioned, the jib is flapping, so clearly there's a line that's loose. No one would use auto-pilot with one engine, in an anchorage or mooring field, and with no one even in the cockpit. The RIB is attached, so presumably there IS or WAS someone aboard. It's just odd all around. As though someone fell overboard while prepping to leave.

It's an onshore breeze - look at the towel on the beach. Boats at anchor will sit facing the strongest element the other yachts at anchor are sitting into tide meaning wind is not the strongest element here and he is actually punching tide at a fast rate - it under engine. I would guess that the boat was at anchor with no one on board. The whitecaps on the water indicate a wind speed of 17-21 knots based on the Beaufort Wind Scale. The jib sheets are visible on the furling forestay meaning the sail was not pulled out intentionally. The furling line responsible for keeping that sail wrapped up tight got loose, caught the wind, and propelled the boat forward as the center of effort was ahead of the boats centerline.

    • @charlieforbes3938

Only problem is presumely all the boats are at anchor (And thus pointing into the prevailing wind, as I assume its the med and theres no overwhelming tide) so scrange the vessel is flying upwind, plus theres a good chunk of wake, especially in the begining to safe to assume shes under engine. No captain visible so not a clear cause.

You can't assume that everyone with a sailboat is rich. Some people spend their entire life's saving on a used boat and refit it themselves. For some people (a lot more than you realize), their boat is all they have in the world. They can't even afford proper insurance. Some love sailing so much that they live and work from their boats, which are their only possessions. I know someone who found a 28-foot boat that was free for anyone who could hall it off. He spent three years restoring it and sold it to buy a cheap 37-foot boat that he is now restoring. He's working his way up the sailing yacht ladder, and he isn't rich enough to rent a proper apartment. I plan on doing something similar, but I'm into airplanes. Airplanes are another thing that poor people own, which makes people assume they are rich. You can buy an airplane on Barnstormers for less than $10,000 if you're willing to put in the work.

It's not a marina. It's an Anchorage, in beginning of video, it's coming out of a port turn with motors on. Hard to see. But looks like a small person at helm. Leopard 50? Mines a 48, ironically it T-boned another 50, bad damage I'm sure

The worst part about boats is any rich idiot can buy one and endanger everyone else. As a former commercial fisherman and recreational ocean kayaker in California and the Florida Keys I have seen such stupidity from people who had no business running a boat.

Drinking and boating don’t mix, despite the enormous culture depicting the contrary. Anchor/moor it, check it, shut down the engine, and THEN go for sundowners!
