    I love how they both get what they wanted but then realize it’s not what they need. They need each other and they have outgrown their old selves.
    When she says they will send Sheldrake a fruitcake every Christmas that’s another great reference from an earlier line that in my humble opinion is her I love you to Baxter . Such a smart screenplay. I also like that it doesn’t end with anything leading to sex just yet . Sex was so cheapened obviously for a reason but I think it was showing more depth in their relationship.

    Did you notice that Bud and Fran never called each other by their first names? It was always Mr. Baxter and Miss Kubelik. Even when he was declaring his love for her, he called her "Miss Kubelik."
    Jack Lemmon was on the receiving end of two of the best closing lines in movie history: this one, and "Well, nobody's perfect" in Some Like It Hot. And both of them are Billy Wilder films.
    Fred MacMurray (Mr. Sheldrake) said that after The Apartment was released, women would come up to him on the street and berate him for making a "filthy" movie. One even went so far as to hit him with her purse. Sheldrake really is a despicable character. MacMurray often played morally compromised characters, as he did in The Caine Mutiny and Double Indemnity. But when I was a kid, he was the dad in the TV sitcom My Three Sons. I was surprised when I learned as an adult that, before that TV show, he specialized in playing weasels.
    "Shut up and deal" is such an effective closing line, much better than "I love you, too" would have been. What she's really saying is, "I know, you don't have to tell me." She's been burned, and is cautious with her feelings. And the way they played it, with her trying to ignore him at first, and then the pause before she delivers her line. Great writing, acting, and direction.

      Fred was actually a nice guy in most of his films, a lot a which were comedies. My favorites are Family Honeymoon (1949), The Egg and I (1947), Father Was A Fullback (1949), Callaway Went Thataway (1951), Murder, He Says (1945), No Time For Love (1943), and Maid of Salem (1937), which wasn't a comedy.

      @meyerhave 7 месяцев назад +1

      @Jeff_Lichtman : Fred MacMurray was absolutely NOT an actor who "specialized in playing weasels."
      "DOUBLE INDEMNITY", "THE CAINE MUTINY" AND "THE APARTMENT" were the three most notable exceptions to the rule of what otherwise embodied his overall "good guy" persona in the overwhelming majority of the films that he appeared in throughout his film and TV career spanning four decades.

    Back then, girls who were considered "pretty" were the Marylin Monroe types with blonde hair, hourglass figure, very soft-spoken. So Shirley McLaine with her short hair and delightfully nerdy sense of humor was revolutionary in this and the lead in Sweet Charity because it showed that girls who weren't strictly speaking eye candy were attractive in their own way

    Winner of 5 Oscars including Best Picture! It was the first and probably the only Romantic Comedy to win any Oscars.

    • @Rmlohner
      @Rmlohner 7 месяцев назад +3

      Judy Holliday won Best Actress for Born Yesterday, one of the most controversial wins in Oscar history since she was up against Gloria Swanson in Wilder's own Sunset Boulevard, and Bette Davis and Anne Baxter in All About Eve. It's generally believed that the three big names split the votes enough to let her squeak past.

      It Happened One Night a romantic comedy also won best picture. I like both but I love The Apartment.

      It Happened One Night won Best Picture, and so did Annie Hall. Annie Hall's status as romantic comedy is debatable imo, but many people do classify it as such.

    One of the best movies ever made - so glad you watched it!! The acting, direction, and script are all just flawless. I love how Baxter and Fran's relationship deepens from casual flirty coworkers to basically soulmates! And Sheldrake is such a sociopath; the very concept of human decency is something he can't even comprehend...look at the expression of utter bewilderment on his face when Baxter quits. There are very few "perfect films" out there, but this is one of them.

  • @Rmlohner
    @Rmlohner 7 месяцев назад +5

    The script was still far from finished when production started, so a good deal of improvising made it into the final movie. Lemmon came up with the nose drop squirting gag on the spot, and winged it through the whole scene of making spaghetti with the tennis racquet. And the whole gin rummy thing was put in because Shirley MacLaine had just learned how to play it.

  • @Rmlohner
    @Rmlohner 7 месяцев назад +10

    This was Billy Wilder's immediate follow-up to Some Like It Hot, which is generally considered the movie that broke the Hays Code after 25 years. So this one takes full advantage with a much more sexually-themed story than you expect from this era, made all the more disconcerting by still being in black and white. Wilder always disliked color films, feeling that they caused the art form to lose a major thing that made it special, and kept working in black and white up to 1966's The Fortune Cookie. Only two black and white films since this one have won the Best Picture Oscar, both using it for deliberate period effect: Schindler's List and The Artist.

    Great reaction and great movie choice! You can't go wrong with Billy Wilder. So many classics! Even his lesser known comedies, such as Avanti or Kiss Me Stupid are really good movies and well worth a watch.

    oh boy NOt too many reactors have done this film, and that was a great line when u said 'Getting frieky in the office" lol. Btw the cast were actually drinking booze in that scene (done on DEC 23) as Director Billy Wilder wanted to catch everybody in the proper holiday mood before they took a real xmas break during the filming. AND In the scene where Karl punches Baxter, Jack Lemmon was supposed to mime being punched, he failed to move correctly and was accidentally knocked down !

    One of my all time favorite “RomDramCom”s❣️Off the beaten path & to the unpredictable point. Two of my favorite actors, director & inimitable script, where the 2 romantic leads never refer to each other by their first names, romantically embrace, nor lock lips. Quite the uniquely neat feat👌

    I am glad that you liked this movie. Yes, the men were pretty disgusting in the way they behaved.
    I am glad that it ended with a happy ending as well. A tragic end to this movie would have felt way out of place, even with some of the dark undertones this film has.
    The ending is just perfect because it doesn't jump right into marriage and family, it just ends with them playing gin rummy and seeing the start of what could be. Do they make it? Do they not? Nobody knows. It is ambiguous and that is a damn good thing. No cliche wedding bells.

    So, this is your fourth Billy Wilder movie, after « Some Like It Hot », « Witness for Prosecution » and « Sunset Boulevard » ? I’m glad you enjoy such a good director !
    If you want to go on with him, may I suggest « The Lost Weekend » (drama), « Sabrina », « Ariane » and « Avanti ! » (romcoms) or « Stalag 17 » (in between) … and a good film noir : « Double Indemnity ».

    Have you allowed someone in your place to have sex and they don't clean up after them? You return to find they've used up your ghee (clarified butter), there's hair all over the bed. Horrible people.
