Fun fact: the elderly woman talking to Barbie on the bench is Oscar-winning costume designer Ann Roth. She holds the distinction of being the oldest ever female Oscar winner (she won for MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM at age 89 years and 6 months). MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM was also Chadwick Boseman’s last movie, and he received a posthumous Oscar nomination for best actor for it too.
Ann Roth is such a sweet woman, she did the costumes for mamma mia! when my highschool put that show on she came and saw it :,)
Now that is a hell of a story. Hope she enjoyed the show @@sarinaxoxo952
That was that awkward ceremony where they put best actor last with the assumption that Chadwick was going to get it but Anthony Hopkins did and wasn't there
He was robbed
I unironically want Ryan Gosling to win a Supporting Oscar for this performance. It's just so ridiculous and deranged in every detail. (while also being remarkably heartfelt and sympathetic!) :)
he most likely will be nominated.. after that.. you never know
I want 'I'm just Ken' to be nominated for best song and Ryan and all Kens to perform it live
It might come down to RDJ vs Ryan in the best supporting actor category at the Oscars and I'm pumped xD
Ryan's performance was good but I think RDJ steals it cuz that man went disgustingly hard for no reason
@@adios4748 probably yeah. but personally i didn't care much about his performance.. i think he over-acted way too much.
I love how Allan being unpopular was the whole joke but everyone who watched the movie loves him, that's so wholesome😂
The real question is was that Allan or Michael Cera 🤔 the world may never know
I always got a queer-ish nod from Michael Cera's character. Might just me projecting.
@rivendriftwood If I recall correctly that was done on purpose, but I may be wrong
Allan representing the "underappreciated person that doesn't fit in" archetype. He's PERFECT.
@@rivendriftwoodIt would be cool if that was the intention, because notice how it’s Alan who’s the only man in Barbieland to (literally) fight for Barbies?? Queer men have always been allies to the feminist movement
The daughter, Sasha, and her pack of "Mean Girls" were based on Barbie's chief competitor: The Bratz Dolls. Even have the same names.
Well, that hasn't been confirmed, it's just a fan theory. With the original Bratz dolls, Sasha is actually the black one, but in the movie, Sasha is the main girl. "Yasmin" is the name of the tan Bratz doll.
@@AllyMack23 I agree aesthetically Sasha would look different but everything seems to add up, even beyond just being a fan theory. another detail is that in the barbie movie, Sasha's mother calls her 'bunny boo-boo' and Sasha's nickname in the bratz series was bunny boo. its a bit too perfect to be a coincidence.
@@siriuslymeva Eh, to me that's the only coincidence. I think her friend group was just diverse, that's all. But it can be fun to believe that it's something else. Anyone can believe what they want. :)

I love that you caught and verbalized the complex messaging in this movie. There's tons of nuance, exploring both sides from Barbie's perspective and Ken's, and you got it! Many reactors didn't quite get into it as much, but you took time to process and verbalize the nuance! This is why you're one of my favorite reactors! ❤️
The complicatedness really freaked a lot of people out - not a majority, but a lot. A couple guy reactors, who clearly would have had to be dragged to "Barbie" in the cinema, didn't get past the 'beach off' scene and took an, "I don't think this is appropriate for small children" stance, which made me laugh.

@viviandaniel9659 Yes!
It's amazing that by the end, where the Kens gain "some" influence and autonomy in Barbieland (but ONLY a little) that many dudes have unironically complained that, "That's not fair!"...
Yeah man. That's the point.

Totally agree. I saw Natalie’s videos on Gen V season 1 first and then came and watched this next. I really appreciate her vulnerability and honesty. She’s not afraid to be who she is and genuinely like something rather than be constantly cynical, which is an easier path to likes and views. Fully subbed and look forward to more content here. Seems like a good comment section too.
This movie actually helped me with a recent breakup. I am just as valuable of a man without needing a relationship or to be a provider of someone.

Absolutely!! It's my favorite Margot Robbie movie!
Immediately let people know she's def not just another pretty face. Makes me think of Nicole Kidman in _To Die For,_ a movie that would be an awesome reaction too. (Although don't know if it would rate high in watches.)

Barbie is Gerwig’s weirdest, funniest and most bonkers film to date. Loved every moment of it
The great thing about weird movies like this is that you can't guess where the plot is going. It doesn't fit the mold of any cookie-cutter Hollywood blockbuster, and though you kind of realize it will be a happy ending, it isn't obvious how the situation will resolve. The movie also doesn't take itself too seriously and pokes fun of itself often. And it somehow despite all of this manage to pull at the heartstrings. It's just a fun overall film.
You should watch the gods must be crazy to know what bonkers is. Barbie is as safe as a movie gets.
I can’t wait to see narnia when it comes out ❤
Great commentary. Most reviews take Barbie's point of view -- for good reason, because so few other movies explore it -- and overlook Ken's arc. It's a much more nuanced movie than most people realize, full of pointed observations about the unreasonable burdens society places on both girls and boys, and you're one of the few commentators who've noticed
so true, It was so nice and refreshing to see Natalie's realization of it and understanding both arc's.
+
I wouldn't say it's nuanced, since there's a scene that directly states it, as well as the entire point of Ken's character. I'd honestly call it very blatant and unsubtle. A lot of people brought in their own baggage into the movie though so they didn't notice.
nuanced is not a word I would use to describe this movie. Its so on your face and unsubtle, but thats okay, it works
I thought it was a pretty clear message but a lot of people definitely missed it. My sister in law walked out of the movie thinking the message was “men suck and they are dumb” when that really wasn’t the point at all.
I love that there is no real antagonist. Not the executives, not the Kens (though they all have antagonistic roles to play) but really it's just.... patriarchy. Holding us all down. Women, men, Barbie, Ken.
@K.C-2049 No ethical consumption under capitalism. Just take the good where it is. Otherwise you spend all your time complaining nothing is ever good enough and never see any change because you're waiting for heaven on earth.
and Alan.
Your closing comments were perfect, Natalie. You captured everything I was left feeling in the theatre when the credits rolled. I could only wish to be so articulate.
Natalie, you are so well spoken. I loved watching your reaction and hearing your thoughts. The way you were able to articulate the lessons that both women AND men can take away from the movie was just awesome. I’m a guy and it was just really awesome to hear someone understand that Barbie isn’t just made for women which is something i’ve been told on numerous occasions. While the movie is very much catered towards women, there is a lesson in it for every single person out there and that is why people love it so much. You’re awesome Natalie!!!!
I think that you legally have to do Oppenheimer now. Sorry, I don't make the rules.
It comes out till the 21st🥲
It's the only way to officially get the Barbenheimer experience!! I mean, it's a culturally significant thing.
Agreed.
Seconded
The true barbenheimer experience

i am SO happy you brought up the Snow White thing bc it is so toxic for people to have one definition of feminism or female empowerment when in reality there is no one definition or experience of a woman
I really love the attention to detail with all the history of the toys. The outfits, the sets, it all comes from actual Barbie history.
I literally screamed when Earring Magic Ken showed up. I actually had that one and totally forgot about it hahaha.
I saw this movie with my brother and I cried multiple times. There was a message for both women and men in this movie, this wasn't something I was expecting from a toy movie
Same. And I’m a middle aged hetero cis guy. I cried even more the second time I saw it in the Theaters when I took my dad. He liked it too. I was very lucky to be raised by pretty progressive parents.
That was extremely thoughtful Nat. It's nice you saw Kens POV but such an empowering film
You mean, she saw through Hollywood
Empowering lmao
Honestly, this is a great movie but the whole time all I could think about was how much FUN Ryan Gosling must have had making this! It just comes across with his acting in this role that he was absolutely having a blast and really leaning into being able to ham it up a little
You get a sense of that in all the promotional stuff Margot and Ryan did for this. Margot's always really good at stepping up and representing the movies she's in but Ryan's just kinda quietly enjoying himself in her shadow, until she actively draws attention to him which she does all the time. Greta Gerwig apparently let Ryan run wild and try stuff all the time and the result was Margot busting out laughing and ruining takes. You can see her start to crack in several places through the movie - for example, when he slaps himself and falls down up in the bedroom you can just see Margot reacting when the camera pans away from her. Apparently putting on two pairs of sunglasses was a random Ryan thing that made it in. Ryan stepping out of view and yelling, "SUBLIME" was one of his - Greta said Ryan shouted a different weird, random thing on every take and SUBLIME got the biggest reaction in the moment so it stayed. Ryan apparently had a hell of a time shouting out the clothes as he flung them from the bedroom and had to have a costume person out of frame whispering the full names so he got it right on camera, and that whole set up was just delirious to watch from behind the camera. Margot said Ryan was pretty chill and reserved in rehearsals, so she thought "Oh, that's interesting, I need to dial it back to match," but then in front of the cameras he let fly and she was aghast and delighted. 😄
@@karlmortoniv2951 All of that sounds really fun and creative. I freaking love that they all could _horse_ around like that 😎
Ken's story arc was actually my favorite part of this movie. I hate it every time a movie/show has a female lead and plays up girl power at the expense of male characters. This was the rare film that addressed both sides and didn't use men as a cheap joke to make women look better. They both had their journeys to go through and their lessons to realize and they helped each other to the end of those roads.
Except it did play up the idea of women being oppressed, and the end result wasn't "let's be equal" but was essentially "let's throw Ken a bone every now and then".
@@Bridge2110 …nobody said it didn’t address women being oppressed? The impossible contradictions foisted on women is one of the main themes of the movie and is the crux of Barbie’s character arc.
I also don’t really understand how you can look at the conclusion of Ken’s arc, which says “men should be able to have meaning, value, and support in their life that isn’t solely dependent on having someone loves them romantically” and erode that down to “Ken gets a bone thrown his way.”
@@quegs The impossible contradictions don't exist. It's an absurdist idea. People just want a happy medium. That's not a contradiction.
And that's not oppression. I was saying it was part of the whole girl power narrative.
And the idea that men should have value is the most basic idea of human respect. How is that not throwing them a bone at most?
@@Bridge2110isn't that like the joke and the point? The first part of Barbie in Barbie land was to setup how that world work so Barbie and Ken get shocked to realize the real world is actually the reverse, a lot of men is still in power and throwing some bones to the women every now and then.
@@StephenN.Parker But the problem is that the real world isn't at all like that, and the message that they learned based on the 'unequal' premise should have been that they should be equal, but they didn't end on that note.
My wife just found out you were watching this virtually blind and she keeps gasping and going "I'm so happy for her!!"
I think you hit the nail on the head with your analysis. I've seen a lot of people write the movie off as just men vs women, and while it does touch on some gender issues, it's actually much more about being human, finding value in yourself, and not having to be perfect or have all the answers all the time.
If I could be honest, I was surprised, genuinely surprised, by not only how funny it was but how emotional and heartfelt it got... BARBIE DID THIS. Lol
Wow
I have to say - this is probably the most insightful & intricate reaction for this movie I've seen yet.
Great Job, Ms Gold!
Thank you for shouting out the plastic tube animals that we all had growing up. They deserve their day.
Fun fact Nat, that “ si se puede” line was a nod to America Ferrera when she was a teenager she played in the Disney channel movie “ Gotta Kick it up” and the famous line in the movie was “si se puede”
Sasha's dad in the movie is America's husband in real life. 🙂
I’m a mom with a little girl, and almost 30. American Ferreira’s monologue unexpectedly made me cry. She eloquently put into words what it’s like being a woman, especially a mom. Being a mom, specifically, is contradictory. You really can’t do anything right. Society is more critical of mothers than fathers. They write off fathers for just doing their best, but mothers who are overwhelmed or overstimulated are blamed for one thing or another.
I have worked hard to be where I am today, even though it’s not where some people are. I know women in my life who have rich husbands and boyfriends and have Birkins and travel first class everywhere. I have a few luxury items that I purchased myself, and couldn’t be happier. I always thought I would love to marry a rich guy and have everything handed to me, but now I wouldn’t trade my life for that.
It’s nice being able to embrace what WE as individuals want. Even if it’s as minor as being confident in the outfit we pick out for the day or a night out, or as major as the college we choose or the career path we choose. We are all doing the best we can and we need to stand in our strength.
Highly recommend Greta Gerwig's other directorial efforts. She is fantastic. Ladybird is quite possibly the best teen drama ever made, and her version of Little Women might be the best film adaptation of that book, to date.
Loved Ladybird!
I’ve seen Ladybird but not Little Women yet. I do keep hearing that it’s a must watch.
Ladybird is AMAZING. It's such a great mother/daughter film. Also, I would watch anything that Saoirse Ronan is in (or directed by Greta)
Greta is apparently directing a reboot of Narnia for Netflix which is wild and random but I think she'll handle it really well
@@monarchofllamas2150 I saw this the other day. I can't wait. Apparently she's doing two of them.

Plus it was nice to see the laughs and crys again
Wow. Honestly felt really good hearing your thoughts on the big message. It’s a shame so many people missed it.
I'm really glad you were able to empathize with Ken's character. A lot of women on tiktok/social media were dragging and dunking on him like crazy Lol And I understand why, a lot of his behavior was toxic and over the top, but as a guy I 100% get where it comes from. It doesn't make his lashing out okay, but it stems from a very real place. In a way, his arc is a perfect illustration for male adolescence in several regards.
Probably my favourite movie of 2023. Absolutely my favourite Ryan Gosling performance of all time. And Nat almost falling off her chair laughing at Will Ferrell's Jew comment is one of my favourite Nat moments ever. 😄
It was a great movie but the notebook in my opinion was Ryan gosling's best performance hands down.
When I saw this in the theaters I loved it and was confused at why people were saying it was sexist vs guys or whatever. I thought it did a good job showing the struggles of both sexes and your commentary about it is spot on I wish everyone could just not be shitty and we could treat eachother kindly.
Because it played up the idea of women being oppressed, and the end result wasn't "let's be equal" but was essentially "let's throw Ken a bone every now and then".
@@Bridge2110 You're not wrong there the ending def didn't have them all learning something it just returned to the status quo.
But people were like BIG MAD about it lol and that doesn't seem like something to be even just mad about.
@@Bridge2110I interpreted the end of the movie as a nod to real-life civil rights movements. The Kens becoming equal to the Barbies in every way immediately isn’t how literally any fight for rights has ever gone. I agree it would have been more satisfying as a moviegoer for everything to end up more 50/50 immediately, but instead they went for a tongue in cheek reference to Kens eventually gaining the power women have in the real world. Implying, to me, that the Kens’ fight for equal treatment will mirror the real world in that it will take a lot of time and effort. I didn’t think the message was that the Kens will stay oppressed forever or that that’s how it should be: I think the message was just that those changes can’t be expected to happen instantaneously, even in Barbieland.
@@melanieenglish2664 Maybe I'm wrong, but there was no tongue in cheek reference to Kens eventually gaining power. This is entirely imagined context in your head. It is not a part of the movie itself. Given that the politics in Barbieland were shown to be nonsense and happen instantly, and the culture of Barbieland being shown to change instantly even in the movie (they made it Kenland in a day, no? where, ironically, all the women were happy), the fact it didn't in the end, means that was their end goal.
@@Bridge2110you missed the entire point
You hear Barbie movie and you think it’s just a silly movie about a toy and then you see it’s written by Greta Gerwig and Noah Bombach and you know it’s gonna be something totally different and well written.
This movie was such a pleasant suprise. Went to the theater dressed up but still had pretty low expectations. I was thinking the message would be heavy-handed (see V:For Vendeta) and I thought this movie navigated this in a smart and poignant way. And it's not embarrassing to like Rob Thomas, he has a great blusey voice, and sings with emotion. He is versatile and his catalog of music goes far beyond what most people have heard.
I loved hearing you reflect on this movie, I feel like you picked up on everything it was trying to say
Oh boy, it’s finally here! I loved watching Barbie for the first time, and I immediately watched Oppenheimer right after, luckily the theater close to my home had sessions perfectly lined up, so I basically spent 5 straight hours inside a dark room watching movies, but it was super fun, core memory achieved successfully.

Thank you for really trying to understand the messaging I’d say you helped me see it in a little bit more of a nuanced way. I thought I got the Ken message but you absolutely expanded it for me. You must be the only reactor I’ve seen to value the intricacies of the writing of this great movie. Sadly most guys feel defensive about it of what I’ve seen and it’s sad because they really made an effort to include men’s experience in the film. So thanks.
What was shown in this movie wasn't men's experiences or perspectives.
What was shown in this movie was a dichotomy between an "empowered modern woman (barbies)" and "disempowered woman (kens)."
Women are not reliable narrators for comprehensive, holistic, breakdowns of gendered interactions, experiences, or relationships.
so good to see a creator who understood the message of the movie! love your reacts ❤
So many people misunderstood this film as a feminist hit piece. But it really does shine a light on the unattainable and unfair standards put on both sexes. Ken tries to be what he perceives to be "a man" and it's not him at all, he tries to live just to please barbie and that doesn't work either. The movie is not only talking to girls but also to young boys, to just be themselves unashamedly and not try to live up to anyones standard of "masculinity"
Not a feminist movie 😂😂😂😂
It's not misunderstanding to call this feminist. Feminism isn't about women being better than men, it's about us being equal. This counts as a feminist film.
@@naya9076 feminism is focused on the female side of equality though and this film is a pretty extreme version of feminism. It portrays all men as losers. It's only attempt at looking at men's issues is to say that men are victims of themselves. So they're still to blame in any case
@Josh95x sure buddy
@@Josh95xof course someone like you would see it that way
Definitely relating to that "people won't care about me as much" as I age vibe and that feeling of not having anything to offer. Honestly I find a weird amount of relating to both Barbie and Ken in the movie and your thoughts really nail a lot of what I connect with in both of them.
So about Michael Cera, he's actually like a HUGE Barbie fan. His agent originally turned down the role, I believe, thinking Michael wouldn't be interested, and upon telling Michael, he was flabbergasted and told his agent to immediately call them back so he could get the role.
Edit: I absolutely love this movie. As a man, and as a Socialist, with maybe a Communist leaning (minus all that insane Tankie nonsense), this is all I could ever ask of a movie like this. Not just from its representation of women, but of men, capitalism, and its deconstruction of gender roles and expectations. It's absolutely beautiful. Not a fan of the Zack Snyder's Justice League joke because it insinuates that only misogynists like that, but... That's not true. It's just a good, superior version of the film. And Zack Snyder is a Socialist, too. I mean, possibly his worst received movie ever, Sucker Punch, is one of the best feminist films in existence. I guess that just means he's at least not a dick, but I'd bet a lot of money he's Socialist, as well. But aside from that offensive joke, this film is amazing, and essentially every other joke lands. And I hope this movie can be eye opening for a lot of young and old men rather than just being something for women to connect with.
hear hear, bro!
Zack Snyder is an objectivist, not a socialist. It's not even close.
@@nathansossai Has he stated that himself? I know that's the general online concensus, but has he ever actually stated such a thing himself?
I think you’re reading too much into that Snyder’s cut joke. It’s one of the things the Kens think cool men care about - same with cars, beer, and mink. Clearly Ken Ryan doesn’t even like these things, it’s just playing a “masculine” role because he thinks that’s what men with power do.
Thank you so much for your empathy towards young men. Your words at the end of the movie were very touching to me.

i love that this movie highlights so well how patriarchy hurts _both_ men and women, with its narrow and unrealistic expectations that we all have or will experience at some point in our lives. i think it's a shame that some people in certain groups so strongly believe this movie is anti-men, when it's so clearly not. they missed the very beautiful message this movie had. because when it comes down to it, this movie is about life and the _human_ experience. both barbie and ken's journey, while slightly different, had the same theme. it was a journey of self discovery and what it means to be human, what it means to just be _you._ and the comedy throughout was a huge plus of course. allen, ken, and weird barbie are favorite characters for sure! enjoyed your reaction, and glad you had fun with this movie!
I came out of this movie so impressed with Mattel. They put so much trust in this movie, to take their property in a new direction, a story that is more about the story and setting than advertising their product, and being portrayed in 'that' way. That's rare for such a big company.

Barbie on release was a movie that took a few watches to try and realise that humanity is about mistakes and being better due to them is what makes a good person, Ken made mistakes by turning against Barbie, and it happened because he lost himself and felt unimportant, and it was facing that he was wrong that helped him realise the right and good path, and made him a better person, despite those mistakes
Crazy. As a cinephile, I would have never, ever thought my favorite movie this year would be a film based on Barbie.
The greatest irony of the meta commentary in and around this film is that the toxic males online hating on it as being 'feminist, woke' are the ones that could use Ken's positive messaging and growth the most.
The most male positive 'feminist' film I have ever seen. Love it.

Even with all the overwhelming praise it got opening weekend I had no idea what to expect going in to see Barbie. And yet I haven’t laughed at a comedy this hard that wasn’t a Jackass movie in almost a decade!! There were moments I couldn’t breathe because I was laughing so hard.
If this movie is not nominated for a ton of Oscars at the upcoming Academy Awards it proves they truly don’t like comedies.

Not sure if I watched your commentary seven months ago, but I’m glad I came back to it. I really wish I had a lot more knowledge about pop culture and just general things that I should have known about before this movie made me aware of it. I’ve always picked up on the philosophical stuff like human emotions and stuff like that but I mean it’s really great the way you explained, Ken relevance towards a small but significant portion of men out there and it’s probably not the significant portion that most women think about or pay attention to which is a really great message to put in a movie that had this much influence on people
You should definitely see more Gerwig films! She’s spectacular.

the Ken arch is the first time ever where i've seen any media depicting how men get radicalized - even the "i only liked the horses part" is very accurate. it's a shame most people don't analize that part of the movie more.
This is the best barbie movie reaction by far, it's so great how you really understood the messages, the jokes, you appreciated the music numbers, and the acting, the script, and the movie touched you. I really appreciate it, really moving, I loved it
Lady Bird and Little Women are absolutely worth your time. Greta Gerwig is a genius.
This film's like an elaborate SNL sketch fever dream... Beyond just having Ferrell, McKinnon and some silly parody commercials, all the characters feel exaggerated and SO extra (in the best possible way). I love how the constant absurd energy is only interrupted by the more thoughtful and grounded moments when Robbie is speaking to the older women of the film. It's truly a existential MASTERPIECE! 😎
I knew you'd love this movie for all the reasons I did! I'm only halfway in, but your thoughts around Ken's journey paralleling young boys today was exactly what I thought when seeing this movie for the first time. So so so important, and I absolutely adore how well this movie tied so many themes together so fluidly.
(Edit: I also love Rob Thomas!)
Glad to hear your take on this one! It’s very true that there’s a divide and animosity between women and men today. Before I saw this movie I regrettably believed it was nothing more than anti-men propaganda from what I was told by others.
But when I watched it I was genuinely surprised and gladdened to find that it addressed both perspectives and makes the point that no one is the villain. Many are just lost and hurt and all of us, men and women, should work together to resolve that.
speaking of the snow white movie, that’s also being co-written by greta gerwig! that’s probably the one reason why i’m excited for it. disney probably won’t give her as much liberty as mattel has and there are other writers involved in the project, but i hope her charm brings something valuable to the table, just like it did to barbie.
also YOU NEED TO WATCH LADY BIRD AND LITTLE WOMEN!!! lady bird changed my life completely and they’re both so beautiful and delicate and will make you cry.
Everyone is great in this movie and I definitely cried. But Ryan’s delivery is stand out. So hilarious.
Nat... this video was beautiful. You speak to many people's hearts and I LOVE how you understand how both women AND men feel and what many go people through. You are not just pretty... but what came from you today shows just how beautiful you are inside. Such a lovely soul you are.
I loved your commentary at the end, it reflected a lot of what I took from the movie, and honestly, it's always so good to hear what a female reactor has to say to this movie. I loved this, and loved the editing of the reaction! ALAAAAN!
I really need Ryan Gosling to win award of some sort for this role lol
Absolutely LOVED your breakdown at the end.
Also, you are very pretty and your laugh is everything. You laugh loudly and freely, just like I do, so I feel very seen. lol
Fun fact! One of the Kens is now the next Doctor Who
I watched it for the first time yesterday and I didn't expect it to hit my emotions that hard, when she's on the bench with old Barbara, or when she meets Ruth at the end, it killed me
You nailed the Barbie Girl song in your intro even more than Niki Minaj. This is one of the literal best movies ever made, Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig are such inspirational women in the film industry. Saw it 4 times in cinemas!

You're sincerity and honesty is attractive and of course your spontaneous reactions..
Honestly, they didn't have to go so hard on Ken's story. Like I went in knowing I wasn't the target audience, but dang. Like it still has a "Greta Gerwig's take on what men and boys are struggling with", but they didn't even need to go that far, and they did.
"It parallels young boys who feel isolated and neglected and looked down upon just for being men, but then being told they have all the power and not really having any power because they're young boys."
How on Earth did you absolutely NAIL it?! That was my feeling growing up, and I think it's why we've been seeing men and boys fall into some really toxic crowds. From what I can tell, a lot of them felt they were guilty of an entire history of gender inequality before they could even vote, and are told they have to fix everything with all the power they don't have.
That's certainly how it felt for me. It started with "Well then I'll be one of the good guys. Not like those other guys!" So then every normal thing about growing up as a boy became shame an horror as I was certain I was just a villain in the making. Then when my emotional health started to crack, and some girls attacked me in college, it all turned into bitterness and anger. It took me a long time to get out of it.
I've seen a lot of mothers raise their boys on "I'm going to teach him to be calm SO HE WONT BEAT YOUR DAUGHTER. I'm going to teach him to shower regularly SO HE WONT OFFEND YOUR DAUGHTER WITH HIS DISGUSTING STENCH. I'm going to teach him to apologize in a healthy way SO HE CAN APOLOGIZE FOR WHAT HIS GENDER HAS DONE TO THIS WORLD." And acting like that reasoning isn't the most toxic thing ever. Like "Oh no, I unfortunately gave birth to a baby villain. Now I must fix him in order to save the girls around him."
Just teach your son to celebrate his empathy, take care of himself for his own sake, and to just focus on being a good person with what he has available to him. Don't fill his backpack with guilt from an entire history he was never around for, nor had the power to do anything about. You'll guilt him for something he can't control. And if he doesn't go into a depressive spiral, he'll go into a bitter spiral.
Anyway, rant over. I'll post a separate comment for the actual barbie stuff.
You know, as a feminist raising two boys I think this is a really insightful comment. Of course I want to teach them all of those things, but as you say, it's also just for their own sake, and part of being an ethical, compassionate, emotionally healthy person who uses whatever strength/power they may have to serve instead of to lord over somebody. I do want to make sure to specifically counteract certain ideas (especially around friendships/romantic relationships with girls and how that should be handled) that come from society about how women should be treated/handled/viewed and what is/isn't acceptable. I want them to be cognizant of ways their perspective and experience might be different from a woman's. (They're being raised in a home with a full time working mom in a STEM field and a stay at home dad so hopefully they already have a decent idea of how these things can be flexible.)
But like you say - it's not about something being inherently wrong with THEM (outside of normal fallen human nature, haha) that needs to be corrected or apologized for, or some burden they personally have to carry/atone for. They're boys and they're awesome, not in 'spite' of it, but because it is part of who they are.
👏 👏 Your analysis of the movie at the end
Honestly one of best analysis of Barbie I've ever heard
7:25 my friend had one growing up! Came with a magnetic hollow belly with a baby inside.
I love your comments and thoughts on the movie! It was such an amazing movie and I loved it with all my heart. The scene where Barbie becomes human makes me cry every time and one of my favorite things about it is this little tidbit "Director Greta Gerwig has confirmed that the sequence features the friends and family of the cast and crew. " Something about that makes me tear up even more
I took my girlfriend to this movie on our 3rd date and I wanted to keep it secret. I wanted it to be special and I found out about a drive in theater that was airing it but it's 40 minutes from where we are. So I told her the night we were to see it that I'd take her to it the next day but on that night I found a really cool place for a date, so that is what she thought was in store. This drive in theater driving to it from the highway there is a Hustler strip club that has billboards, a lot of them, going there. She looked at me, "Are you taking me to a fucking strip club?" I laughed and said, "Damn you ruined the surprise." She became livid, "Turn the car around right fucking now." I just started laughing, which pissed her off more until she saw the billboard for the drive in. She started yelling at me while laughing, "I was about to break up with you, asshole." We're still together and we joke about it to this day.
Hilarious story. Pretty awesome amount of restraint holding it in.
I genuinely really appreciate this movie as a guy with Ken's arc of self-love but it really helps to get another angle on it from a woman watching the movie and see how the themes present for both genders are symptoms of interlocking societal issues. We all want to be loved, but all these confusing and contradictory expectations of ourselves and others can make it so messy.
"once they figure out how to build that wall sideways and not just up" best line of the movie hahaha
love your reaction to this .. really touches in an interesting way on so many sensitive society issues
The tragic irony of the messaging is that everyone who misunderstood it are exactly the ones that needed to understand it the most.
I wish you grew up with Barbie just to appreciate the costumes. I remember how excited I was to get the neon rollerblading outfit 😂 Ryan Gosling is so funny in this role. Definitely should win an award!
Fun fact: I heard that the first time Barbie meets Sasha and her friends at school is supposed to be a nod to the Bratz dolls 😄
Nat, as always, absolutely love your reactions! You always pick up on things that I’m yelling at the screen about to other reactors (or family, if they stay in the room with me) lol 😅
Yeah true! They have Bratz names too, like Sasha and Jade.
That dress yo! 10/10 Looks super comfy.
What you're saying about young people feeling as though they have nothing to offer... a lot of older people feel that way too. Trying to get a new job when you're in your 40's & 50's is difficult; every business wants "young, energetic, positive", and it's an impossible to meet that.
Natalie making valid and very thoughtful points on this one, amazing reaction as always
