    My first ride on the brand new BMC Roadmachine SLR in top-end Dura-Ace Di2 trim - this model costs $12,999 but the range starts from $3,199. The new bike now has clearance for 40mm tyres, with features including downtube storage and an integrated light. While this first ride was short it gave me the opportunity to test some of these new features.

    Bike looks smart. When are companies, besides Scott cause they did it right, gonna learn NOT to integrate lights? 3 hours for an ENDURANCE model is not nearly long enough. I hope there is a plug that comes with it so you can run a different light and not have dirt get into that gap.

    Just got one of these 01. Its a rad bike for sure! Yet to test out light run time. Bike does come with a blanking plate if you use your own light. Its a complete different piece of rubber around the seatpost. Looks clean. Also worked out the trick to removing the light, if you move the rubber piece up first the light comes straight out, same with install. Quicker once you know how. Light is not usb c, its micro usb. Being a mountain biker first, was looking for a comfortable ride, that still felt fast and zippy. Also something you could put a gravel tyre on for the odd ride. Think this ticks a lot of boxes, yes its expensive, but damn its a nice bike and I bloody deserve it. So leave me alone :P

    You are right David - it ‘s a magical place!
    Quick Question, as a MD, if I may have any attribute of logic and having ridden my first gravel race, P2A in Canada. I noted that in mud/mixed gravel, even 35-38C tires seem to out-perform folks riding larger tires, several of the pros same/used the same - IF this is a fact, or at least mostly true, why are all bike manufactures pushing for larger tires (something that I like, and believe in too), when in race conditions/mixed terrain a super large tire is not optimal (maybe better in frank mud, although not clearly, and slower on road segments) - is this worth a video? What is known about performance in race gravel conditions and tire size in comparison to where the ‘industry’ is going - thanks!

    Have a 2022 Roadmachine One in 51. For an endurance bike, the geometry is more race-oriented (aggressive?). Didn't hear a discussion of the revised geometry for this year--shorter reach (379mm v 382mm), taller stack (550mm v 541mm), and shorter top tube (532mm v 537mm)--intended to give a slightly more upright riding position. Ngl, not seeing any upgrades here that would compel a change. For those of us running 28s and staying on the road, the wider allowance is a null point, and that light is set to become an annoyance.

    Just a note to potential 17 Mile Drive riders - the road is free for bicycles, but cars & tour busses have to pay a toll. It really is a beautiful ride (about 20 miles if you do a loop through Carmel), especially when you have some sunshine and you get blues and greens from the water.

    Have been so looking forward to the updated road machine - although from the first impressions video it seems a bit underwhelming? Steering quite slack and not lively? I don’t think any lighter than the old? Seems heading more to an all road bike, than a viable option for a comfortable but fast road bike you can race? Look forward to your detailed review Dave - where you will unpack it all for us. Looks a beaut though.

  • @treyquattro
    @treyquattro Месяц назад +1

    the bike looks great. I'm not convinced by these storage cubbyholes in the frame of new endurance bikes though. Just how waterproof are the closures? Having to carry a saddlebag is a (minor) pain but there's no structural integrity or water ingress issues, potential or otherwise. The frame surely has to be stiffened and therefore heavier to accommodate a compartment?
    Also, I've always questioned BMC's decision to close off the drive side of the through-axle. If it's such a benefit to aerodynamics, what about the other, non-drive side? Surely the bike would be unbalanced! Maybe owners are intended to cover the bolt end with tape or some special BMC-supplied covering (probably $100 each)? I'm sure it makes absolutely no difference, but must provide a potential issue if anything ever goes wrong with the receiving end of the axle.
    Is there an aero benefit to the rear light over one secured with a silicone strap e.g.? Given that it's situated in an area filled mostly with moving human I can't imagine there's any benefit. Seems like you'd have to have more than one light, especially since it only lasts 3 hours, and a) that ties you into BMC's proprietary solution, and b) undoubtedly, since it's BMC, it'd be more expensive than the mass market alternative, which work the same and have a universal mounting.
    I do look forward to a more in-depth review of the new Roadmachine, on less perfect surfaces for sure.

    I'm an RM01 MOD 2021 owner and love it but I won't be going for one of these. I think the light and dedicated bottle idea are poor decisions but I like the rest of the bike.

  • @pierssamson4069
    @pierssamson4069 Месяц назад +1

    Like the idea, but it’s another thing to break when it comes to the cover of the storage compartment and you can’t replace the bottle cage with anything else so if they run out of stock and it breaks, which it will, if you keep the bike for long enough,you may end up with no bottle cage in that area or a storage cover that doesn’t work either - don’t think I like this design. It might even be a dealbreaker for me.
