It's so true. I try to find popular songs of today and they strike me as so superficial. The 60s and to a lesser extent, the 70s, were the best periods for popular music. Somewhat similar to the late 1700s, the 1800s up until the early twentieth centuries were when nearly all great classical music was written, and the same for poetry. Poetry written today is ridiculously superficial and pointless. l read the New Yorker so I have ample opportunity to keep up with contemporary poetry but it is just so empty and boring. Whereas during the late 1700's and into the 1800s and even the early 2000s all the great English poetry was written. Curious phenomena.

You know what I always love about this song, its the ‘grown people’ effect of it. You know you need to be in an age group to be listening and understand it. Patti Labelle always adds something electrifying to every song she sings. Definitely a perfect song for my Quiet Storm playlist at 2 AM with the gentle taps of rain on my corrugated zinc roof and the transistor radio on top of my chest of draws or dresser.

@@abrahamsmith4248 You may have a later pressing (which isn’t/wasn’t that unusual when a song/album stayed on the charts for a long time), but I know my dad got this album not long after we moved back overseas…definitely in the first half of 1984 (Beverly Glenn label). I remember the album and song being in Jet’s Top 20 not long after Marvin Gaye’s death. The summer of 1985 is when I remember his “So Many Rivers” album coming out on MCA.
