- In this video I will complete a classic horn repair using Brazilian Rosewood. I will talk a bit about the importance of using files and how important it is to blend you seams and joints evenly.
Micheal Jenks came up with the “Down Low” when we were talking about the owners initials carved into the side. Hence, this finished tote is officially called the Down Low. Unless of course Diane Lane calls and wants to talk about it. 😊
You’re an Artist, incredible work. I am a decades long lover and amateur restorer of Stanley hand planes, I’ve repaired cracked totes in the past, but have never seen anything to this level. You’re an inspiration. I’m very glad you have created this RUclips channel. Thank you.
You are very welcome and thank you for the kind words. I really have enjoyed this and have plans this holiday season to step I up a notch with the instructional vids. 👍
MJ @Just Plane Fun always talks about you work. Excellent
Master Class!
Thank you! I appreciate the kind words and support. Stick around…. More great vids coming! -gordon
Great stuff! I really enjoy watching the repair process!
Thank you Gordon… should have a couple more up soon. 👍
great video
Gordon, do you have any insight to the tote production process at the Stanley works? We’re there individuals working to a pattern, cut to a template then rounded and smoothed or machine cut and finished? Are there any discussions in books?
Omg that’s such a great question. I recently met one of the Stanley B&D VP’s and I asked the very same question. There are historical documents and I am trying to make some inroads to learn more. Clearly there are no proprietary concerns as whatever they were doing is not applicable to today’s manufacturing methods.
Do you finish off with a little sanding? My repair was PERFECT until I used paste wax to finish it off.
I will touch it off with a steel wool pad if it’s too shiny…. I’m not a fan of gloss.
Do you have an inventory of Totes and knobs 4 sale? And don't tell anybody but I bought 2 rosewood levels and hacked em for the rosewood!
I am not able to keep an inventory of “available” totes. I ship them out within a day or two of completion. Many of the totes are sent to me direct and returned once restored. That said, I do have an inventory of parts. This allows me to match shape (sometimes) color and grain.
My repair likes to pop off when I use rasps!
Are you saying the new piece comes apart at the glue joint? Let’s talk about that…. I will admit that I have broken totes while rasping them into shape but the times this has happened, it was a new break (or an existing crack I didn’t see) Your adhesive bond should be super strong.
@@gordonaddison307 I glued together an electrical tape repair with tightbond 3. I stared by using a clean wire brush to freshen things up. I was rasping the horn repair that I made from planed walnut and the troche applied busted my previous glue join.
I watched the repair video but I can't see the repair.
Thank you Yang. Great to hear from you!
