    Nice job! I particularly appreciate the segment where you break down particulate sizes in reference to the filtration capabilities...well done! This is closer to the significant and useful info I have been looking for. It goes beyond the basic "test taste" I have seen elsewhere. Thanks!

    Used this filter on Whitney last year. Worked great. Its compact and lightweight for backpacking and you can't beat the price. You do indeed need to be careful as its all plastic especially in rocky environments (trail camp @ 11.5k)

    According to Wikipedia the smallest known virus is 0.017 microns (Porcine circovirus type 1), so this tool will remove them all. So in this sense it is better than what you think. Great video, enjoyed watching.

      There you are wrong. It is true that the smallest known virus, I would change that to the smallest observable virus with current technology. Most virus can't be measure because are too small to be seen directly (with microscope )

    I added a Sawer Quick fit connector to the end of the filter and the intake to my drinking bladder
    So i can pump clean water directly into my bladder

    Yo, I think you might be wrong about the sizes of the viruses. Most filters that are 0,01 describe that viruses are between 0,02 - 0,15 and do get caught by these filters..

    Definitely late to view your video because i've just become interested in this type of product, but it was an excellent review, knowledgeable (at least more than me ) :-) simple and straight to the fact. Thank you.

    Eugene, I had to search for the second part of this video. I think you'd do new comers a service making a stand alone video about water filtration. Maybe as a part of your "intro to backpacking" series? God bless!

    I got this before I saw your video. It made me feel good, I only payed $53. I think if the pump handle breaks I can replace it with SS or Alum. parts from the home store to make it work. I will give it a try and let you know. It will add a little weight.

    Great review! Agree with most of the info but I think your conversion or source on sizes may be wrong. I could be wrong but 1 nanometers = 0.001 microns HepA and Rota are 0.027 amd 0.07 microns respectivbely. Also filter clogging and being basically useless is not untrue but.... You should back flush after every use. Just make an extra cup of filtered water and use a syringe to back flush. Doing this will prevent the clogging and give you a much better flow rate over a period of use. This is the same advice for most filament and other types with a membrane or filament filters. Also never assume your filter isn't allowing things through as you cant know unless you test it with a lab. Likely it is working but using boiling or chemical purification with the filter is added insurance. Takes little time to use the chemical purifiers too.

    It's funny that they added a clip now on the outlet hose, they heard your complaint from years ago.

    So...does it filter viruses or not?? Their info says “yes”, you started the video saying “yes” then gave the dissertation on contaminate size where you clearly said it is “NOT protection against viruses and to boil where viruses are suspected”!! I have the Survivor, straw type, filter but haven’t used it yet: so I’m more than a little curious. I also have a Steripen that I would use alone or in conjunction with other devices if I suspected Viruses. The trick, in my mind is how to know or suspect the presence of viruses? As an aside: I also have a Katedyn (sp) charcoal holder. It’s a screw apart sphere about the size of a billiard ball with outlet spouts that fit the Survivor and Sawyer rubber hoses. You would mount this charcoal container “downstream” of either filter. This device comes with 2 bags of activated charcoal. Of course activated charcoal removes most heavy metals, many chemicals and most of the stinky, bad tasting stuff you often find. Activated charcoal is readily available where fish aquarium supplies are sold.

    My wife just got this for me for christmas, I am a little purple about the piston being plastic and the primary filter not being easily re-buildable. It dose appear the AC is refresh-able. Guess I got to make some molds and cast this in aluminum maybe add either Salt chlorination to kill viruses or possibly U/V function. If im going to cast this might go all the way paired with micro turbine and PV options.

    I will go on a 6 month trip through Asia. Is this filter recommended or can I better buy a UV filter + Sawyer filter? I would combine these 2, Sawyer because of nasty water and UV for the virusses. Bacteria and protozoa are filtered/ made unharmful by both

    I think this filter is more practical than the other one especially if you decide to camp for a night after a long hike. The pro would definitely fill a pot or Kettle much quicker than the smaller one.

    Unfortunately, this video has a lot of bad info. For example, information on virus filtering is incorrect. This unit does filter all viruses if the testing is correct. It also has a cleanable filter. In an extended infrastructure breakdown, or a bio-attack, virus filtering is important. The UF Filter 100,000 is cleanable a good for 26,417 gallons, Carbon Filter is good up to 2,000 liters (528 Gallons). They have upgraded the product since this video, so fixed some of the noted shortfalls. I don't work for, or have any affiliation with the product or manufacturer.

    • @tnphillips08
      @tnphillips08 7 лет назад +1

      I also found information indicating the smaller viruses only reach 20nm. My short research also indicated 0.01 microns is equivalent to 10nm meaning this filter (or any 0.01 micron filter) should filter known human viruses. Please correct this information if it is incorrect.

    • @jamesvickery308
      @jamesvickery308 8 месяцев назад

      The only part with a short life is carbon filter. The UF and pre filter are rated to 100,000 liters, or over 20,000 gallons, and you can add a Sawyer mini on the back end for microfiltratio. Also, you can put an additional 100,000 liter filter on the back side of the filter kir.

      yea the upgrade kit filters WAY better. The MFG actually sent me it to test so I did while measuring parts per million in the water. I went to a still water lake area that looked disgusting, filtered with the upgrade kit attached to the survivor filter pro and it tasted like tap water and was crystal clear

    Why is the filter capacity advertised as up to 100,000L on amazon, yet you say it’s up to 264 gallons? False advertising on the company’s part or are there different variants?

    • @ReviewOutdoorGear
      @ReviewOutdoorGear  4 года назад +1

      Great question! I do t have a good answer however. I’d assume 264 Gallons. 100000 L sounds outrageous.

      There are three parts of the overall filter. Two of them are rated to 100,000 litres, though one of them needs replaced after 2,000 (568 gallons). This video is a few years old, it's possible they've upgraded the filter over time.

    2 is 1 and 1 is none several are necessary for survival!! Always sift your water through a few pieces of cloth before actually useing this filter if the source has lots of debris, put couple bandanna over a top of your water container, then pour water in through your container over the cloth then filter that water

    What water filter do you recommend for hiking?

    • @ReviewOutdoorGear
      @ReviewOutdoorGear  8 лет назад +3

      +jonnny0311 , This one is pretty good, as the price has dropped (see link to amazon above). The one I usually take for a group of 2-4 people is the Katadyn Pocket. Other Katadyn's are great as well, especially the lighter versions. It really depends on the length of your trip and how much you are going to be relying on the filter.

    • @jonnny0311
      @jonnny0311 8 лет назад +2

      +ReviewOutdoorGear Thanks for the quick reply. The Pocket looks solid plus it has a twenty year warranty. I am leaning towards the Katadyn Vario though.
      Thanks again bro

      ReviewOutdoorGear Great video but I just wanted to point out when you said that this product can't filter viruses because they're 0.004 microns, viruses can range from .004 to .01 so this actually can filter some viruses (keyword some). Im not trying to correct you I just thought people should know, keep up the good work :)

    • @ReviewOutdoorGear
      @ReviewOutdoorGear  8 лет назад +3

      Thank you for your comment. Yes it can get some out, but not the ones that really matter. Many viruses are not harmful to humans.

    If you can't easily boil your water to kill the bad stuff, a couple of drops of Iodine will work for me. I know that this isn't a very precise scientific measurement, but I'm still alive at 77 years of age! I like the filter, but durability and ruggedness is a super key factor for me. I like equipment that is simplistic and over engineered. Nice job on the Video. Stay Safe

    Sorry but either your numbers or your math is off. First of all I don't have a dog in this fight so I'm not a fan boy but again something doesn't add up. Most portable water filters on the market are either 0.2 or 0.1 including the Katadyn that you said about twenty times it's made in Sweden. And all of those say that they can filter out 99.99999 of all contamination from the water. Heck the sawyer mini can do this and is only 20 bucks. But this filter says it can filter down to 0.01 that's 100 times more than the others so it should do a better job. Now that also means if the pre-filter doesn't clean the water good enough that the filter will plug up faster. I am not trolling you just pointing this out.

    • @happycamper9300
      @happycamper9300 8 лет назад

      I have a sawyer and it is a little useful device. Never go with the companies claims, that 99.9999 is just advertisement. Of course if the filter can do smaller particles in general it would be better. But on the other hand what much better it can be if you have a 3 micron filter or a 1 micron filter if the particle are 5 microns ? There would be no difference in performance. On the other hand if the particle are .2 micron neither filter will do nothing
