  • You have endless new sweetpotato slips once you have planted some in your garden. I also show how I treat the vines to keep the potatoes in the ground growing larger. In this video, I harvest 25 more slips and show how I quickly root them and plant them. All these plants came from just 1 sweetpotato. Now the 1 sweet potato has 68 new hills of sweet potatoes that I will harvest from.

Great video. I learn a lot from watching your videos. I have never grown sweet potatoes but hopefully will next year. Question: Why want the sweet potatoes that you planted today (6-4-24) not get as big as the ones previously planted? Just curious. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of gardening.

Well, they might, but they will spend the first month in the partial shade created by the corn plants. Then they will only have 2 months of the strong summer sun to grow the roots that are the potatoes, so I'm not expecting as big of a harvest as those that were planted in early May and will get over 4 months of full sunshine. Thanks for watching.

Because I have a very VERY small garden, I am going to trellis a row of sweet potatoes. We shall see!!

I've never grown them on a trellis, however I believe it would work. That would solve the problem of them rooting on the wrong spots on the ground to take energy away from the initial planting site.

I'm not so sure that's 100% correct that the runners won't grow more sweet potatoes as I watched a video on RUclips last week where they let them run and they harvested mounds of sweet potatoes... just sayin.

I've grown sweet potatoes for years, and I've let them run and usually I get lots of pink roots that look like they are starting, but very few eating sized potatoes. If you could link me to the channel where they showed mounds of potatoes from the runners, I'd like to see it. TIA
