HOW TO PLANT A FALL GARDEN WITH "RAISED BEDS" IN A REGULAR GARDEN
Просмотров 29414 дней назад
Mounding your rows into a "raised bed" format works great to grow fall and winter vegetable and greens. It's not as good for spring and summer gardens because the mounds of soil will dry out fast and will need constant watering. The dirt mounds allow the roots of plants with shallow roots such as radishes, lettuce, leafy greens, etc. to easily go down into the soil and produce sturdy plants. In...

I'm glad that y'all are ok and your garden😊
Thank you so much - So many have lost so much, it makes me feel a bit guilty for trying so hard just to save my garden...
Wow!
So glad you're ok!
Thank you - Yes it was a scary night, but thankfully for us the storm took an eastward turn at the last minute and other than the rain and a few downed limbs, we survived intact. Pray for those in FLA, GA, SC, NC, TN, KY, WV that are suffering. It will likely turn out to be the one of the worst storms of all time.
Good news! Garden looks Great! 🎉😊
Thank you. The "raised beds" turned out to be a garden saver. I lost plants last year to heavy fall rains, so that's why I decided to try them this year. A lot more work, but I still have a garden!
WOW! I'm surprised everything survived. I'll take the winter ice and snow over a hurricane.
Yea, I'm over 70 years old, and that's the most rain I've seen in my life.
Praise FATHER GOD IN JESUS NAME AMEN AND AMEN ❤😊
Amen sister!
Oh I'm so glad you let us know. I was so worried and Praying for you all brother ❤😊
Thanks so much. Thanks for the prayers, now let's pray for all those that weren't so lucky. I'm overwhelmed by the disaster Helene was.
@@TheBackGardenYard OH yes Sir. I never imagined it would be that devastating. Praying 🙏 for all. 🙏❤️😊
Hoping y'all survived Helene okay. The Garden can be replanted.
Thank you. We did survive - 12 inches of rain, and a lot of wind, but no damage. I'm working on a video of the garden and how it looks now.
Have you tried "Black Cow Potting Mix"? It's new.
Yea, I saw it in the store, but have decided not to buy it.
Please let us know you're safe
Thank you, yes I'm safe, the storm made a last minute turn to the east. I released a new video today about the garden. Pray for those that weren't so lucky.
Beautiful garden! Good tips. Hello from South Georgia, so we’re bracing, too.
God Bless you and yours. Hope all goes well for you.
Might consider letting the camera focus on the receipt if you really want us to read it...
Your Fall garden is looking awesome!
I pray your garden survives.🙏
Thank you. After 5 inches of rain, all is still well, but the storm rolls through here tomorrow morning.
Intresting garden bed!
I'm so happy I planted the raised beds in the garden this fall, as my regular plantings would be under water now.
Great job on the rows. Those bok choy nestled in the straw remind me of that feeling I get when I'm tucked in bed under some warm blankets. I bet they're happy. All the best wishes for all.
LOL, I can see that! Thanks for the comment and let's hope for the best.
We’re going to get 4 days of straight rain, with one day being a full day of rain on Friday. I think I’ll harvest some of my collard leaves before it happens and harvest the eggplant.
Yea, the next 24 hours will determine how my garden and even my home fares in this storm. Praying for everyone that we survive this intact.
Oh Bless you Brother, that's a lot of work. FATHER GOD keep HIS HAND OF PROTECTION ON YOU AND YOUR FAMILY and Garden IN YESHUA NAME AMEN AND AMEN ❤😊
I appreciate that and you stay safe yourself
Good preparation, may you and yours and your garden weather the storm safely
@@jgrady9553 Thank you. I just checked and everything is ok through the 4 inches of rain we had yesterday and last night. Now they are saying we will have 8 more inches through tomorrow. Fingers crossed.
God be with you! Hurricanes are so unpredictable! Looks like it's coming too close for my comfort 😮😊
How do you prepare your mustard greens?
The mustard greens you see in this video are very tasty added to a salad. Gives a little spicy flavor to the salad. Later on, I usually just boil them with smoked pork neck until they are tender. Thanks for the question.
Pleasure to see your garden. Yes, rain expected in the amounts you stated. Hope all will be well.
Thank you Ann. I did finish preparing before the rain has started now, and I believe it will be as bad as predicted. I'm just praying the water will stay out of the basement.
Oh my goodness absolutely Beautiful Brother 😊❤ Praying 🙏 for you all brother 😊❤
Thank you so much. I'm going to release the preparing the garden for the storm video either later tonight or tomorrow. Near the end you will see just what the garden looks like after only about the first inch of rain. And this is just the cold front thunderstorm line.
I quit watering about 8 weeks ago d/t the high temps. My nappa cabbage has been trying to bolt. Your greens look really green!
You are 100% correct. If the temps stay this warm much longer, all my greens will try to bolt and bloom way sooner that I want them to. I'm hoping for cooler weather after the storms pass.
Looking wonderful. Where are your tomatoes u grew from suckers? Mine suckers still growing in ma, mother plants died. Your technique changed my tomatoe growing.
Yes, my tomatoes that I grew from suckers have a lot of green tomatoes, but so far I haven't picked any ripe ones. I need to show them again. I'm digging the sweet potatoes next week, and I'll show the "cloned" tomatoes then.
Hi, I'm in Michigan 6b and due to that heatwave my summer garden restarted. I was getting ready to pull things up and low and behold I have sugar baby watermelons, sugar cube cantaloupes, tomatoes and peppers all came back. I don't know if the cantaloupe will make it but the watermelon will. I don't do well with fall garden here the bugs gets them every time, funny thing is my garden was stunted earlier because of the bad soil ( Black kow) now thriving?????
Yes, my last test with black kow and evergreen manure products made me rethink my whole use of those products. I've stocked up on the chicken compost and will only use that next year. Glad to hear your garden picked back up. We are going to endure a flood here, the next two days, so it's going to be a challenge for awhile.
@@TheBackGardenYard Awww sorry to hear that, stay safe! and again Thanks for the test that you did no more Black kow for me
@@yolandawatson9949 Yes, most places we can get wood chips and bark for almost free.

Lord, don’t put your hand down on those spiky hulls. I stepped in one as a kid and it took a couple weeks to get all the splitters out.
Yea, I have to wear 2 pairs of gloves when handling the hulls to get the nuts out that are still stuck in there after they fall
Awesome work, God...😊
Thank you! Cheers!
My pole beans are flowering but not producing, why?
Usually it's because the plants are too close together. If that's the case, try thinning them some. Otherwise, it could be because there was too much nitrogen fertilizer, or a lack of bees to pollinate the flowers... Hope you still get a crop!
Thanks for this.🙏
And thank you for watching. I will do the 100 sweet potato harvest video before the end of this month!
Gloves are great when you're handling shit
Chinese quince
Asian Quince for sure!
Very nice 👍
You should consider not tilling and adding compost instead, using the no dig method. The tilling disturbs the life in the soil and it gets harder and harder over time. That being said, your veggie babies look great. Just suggesting an idea that will be better for your soil life and easier for you in the long run. Just dump compost over your garden every year and eventually your soil will become so soft and easy to plant in and move about however you want without pulling out machinery. Thanks for sharing.
I appreciate your thoughts, however it just wouldn't work here. As you can tell by the color of my soil, despite 13 years of adding compost and mulch, the soil is still very much clay based, and gets very compacted in the summer. Also, the land is sloped on a hillside, so I need to move the soil to keep it from washing away. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for showing me a new method to try. Can't wait!
@@shelbyr217 You are welcome. Comments like yours, keep me posting. Thanks for watching.

You are welcome. Plant this weekend, and you will be eating greens by Halloween!
WOW you have accomplished so much Brother. Absolutely Beautiful job. GOD bless you Brother 😊❤
Thank you Melinda, you are so kind. What I do, I do with God's help.
@@TheBackGardenYard AMEN BROTHER 🙏❤️😊
Using Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) works on worms and is nontoxic to us or the environment. You could try it.
Yea, but it would be about 5 times the cost to treat my lawns as the Triazicide. Since Triazicide doesn't kill earthworms, but does kill moths, grasshoppers, and crickets, I'll probably continue to use it. Thanks for the input though.
Please wear gloves when you use any insecticide. Thanks.
Yea, thanks for that. I usually try to wear gloves, and if I don't, I will wash it off immediately if it touches my skin. Thanks for watching.
Lost all my Mullein plants to them this year. by the time I noticed it was too late. They didn't touch the garden though, that I've noticed anyway.
They destroyed my late summer garden, as I didn't want to spray bearing plants. I finally gave up and pulled up my squash, zucchini, and cucumbers. Now I have planted my fall/winter garden of mostly greens, mustards, lettuce, radish, etc. and am debating spraying them with a weaker mixture of sevin liquid to give them a fighting chance to grow until the temperature falls, and the army worm population decreases. The amount of moths I am catching in my trap is almost distressing, but I have finally noticed a decrease since I sprayed the triazicide.
I’m in Louisiana and I had the worst year ever with army worms in my tomatoes. Now we’re battling grasshoppers 😢
Yes, sometimes it's downright discouraging to try to grow a garden, especially in August and September when the bugs are at their maximum population. Good luck...
Get ya some armadillos they'll dig those bastards up 😂
LOL - Pass on the armadillos, they probably do more damage than the worms.
Will have to check our dead yard.
Yea, it may be the worms, and you thought it was drought or something. It doesn't take em long to turn the yard brown. If you find them and spray, it might come back before frost, depending on where you live.
Sounds good!😊😊😊
Goodness. I need a trap like that for cabbage moths worms. The bug net didn't work great. Think moths have a quick month cycle. Not if sure stick em spray or tangle foot works ,could they don't stay attached thou.
Yea, the trap catches lots of mosquitoes also, but I have been amazed at the moths. I've just about lost half of my yard to the worms... But now that I've sprayed, I'm hoping maybe it will come back out in the next 2 to 3 weeks before the October cool down.
Where did you get that particular trap?
@@Balaams_Donkey It's called a Dynatrap - available on Amazon. Way overpriced, but it works great for moths, not so much for mosquitoes, but when I realize the cost for water and fertilizer for the yard, it's worth it to me.
thank you
so it looks like sand plus fertilizer would be the best seed starter. that was going to be my experiment for spring.
I have been making my own seed starter mix for several years just using garden soil and bagged compost products. After this experiment, I'll just use homemade compost and garden soil, and I will also use more sand. Thanks for watching.
I buy my soil at a local place that sells it. They mix it themselves and it's really good. I can buy a whole trailer full or a full scoop for $48. I'm not an experienced gardener by any means but my plats are growing like weeds. Loving your channel by way 🎉
Yes, some of the local folks that sell compost or soil know they need to sell a good product or folks won't return. Thanks for watching.
