США
Добавлен 6 апр 2023
This channel is for suburban gardeners that want to see how to prepare and grow a garden in their backyard on a standard 1/2 to 1 acre lot. Tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, green beans, lima beans, okra , squash, zucchini and much more are shown.
DON'T BUY SEED STARTING MIX FOR YOUR #garden
It's time to start some seeds. Those little bags of seed starting mix can get very expensive if you are planning to plant a decent sized garden. Instead, I show you my recipe for making your own mix, and instead of 12 dry quarts, we make 5 gallons for less than 1 bag of "seed starting mix". I've already started another video to show you how this homemade mix compares to the packaged kind sold in garden centers.

SHAME ON WALMART - DEAD PLANTS FOR SALE #garden
Просмотров 3227 часов назад
Last year I bought the 10 pack of prepackaged bare root strawberries and most of them were dead. (see video linked at the end of this one) So this year I bought them a month earlier and they are still mostly deal. The grower obviously is packing them so soon that they sprout and dry out before they hit the stores, and will certainly be dead before most shoppers at garden centers in March or Apr...

In Georgia, most counties have a county extension office. You can bring a soil sample from your yard or garden, forest or field, and have it analyzed for the type of growth you desire. eg. yard grass, or vegetable garden, or fruit tree orchard, etc. In this video I go over the collection process for the samples I want analyzed, and in part 2 I will show you the results from the tests.
WILD #strawberry #plants HOW TO SPOT AND REMOVE FROM #garden

Wild strawberry plants are natural ground cover in many parts of the country. Unfortunately, the red berries they make are small and almost tasteless, so you want to keep them out of your strawberry patch. In this video I show how to identify to wild plants before they make berries, so you can easily remove them.

#Asparagus is one of the easiest #garden plants to grow and harvest. It only takes about 1 hour each year to maintain the patch, and it's one of the first harvests we get every year. The only downside is that it takes up to 3 years to begin picking the patch, but after that you will harvest asparagus for up to 20 years or more if you keep updating your patch.

AUGUST GARDEN - THE GOOD - BAD - UGLY
I watched because I'm trying to make the same sort of decision. Last year I went with the cheaper stuff from Lowes at $2.79 a bag versus $6.49. However, growth in the cheaper bag was poor. Ultimately, we need a side-by-side grow test.
Check out this one if you can find it - Not cheap but I'm using it this year. www.humbleacresorganics.com/products
Awesome I agree that giving them the medium they will be growing in is a stellar idea, may you be blessed with abundance this season 2025 ... Remember to always give all the glory and success to the Lord above
Yes, Glory to God. He is the master, and we are all servants. Thanks for watching.
Last year I planted one or two sweet potatoes in a bucket, I wanted the slips to plant in my clay suburban lawn to improve the compacted soil. I didn't get much vine growth or any decent potatoes from the slips. I was told no potatoes would form from the "Mother" potato, but I had used the bucket and vines, which grew well, to shade a fish pool. I watered it from the pool. To my surprise, at the very end of the season, I emptied the bucket and it had more than a few small potatoes in it. I didn't know about sweetening them, just brought them in and I was going to eat them at the holidays, but I forgot about them. They are still in my kitchen, somewhere. Thanks for reminding me!
What you do, is let the vines run and root to make new slips. Those slips will make the sweet potatoes. A different kind of plant, these sweet potatoes. Thanks for watching.
@@TheBackGardenYard Oh. I did not know how it worked. I did let them run, but it was a dry summer and they did not thrive. I just found and ate one of the potatoes from last fall. Tasted so good, just boiled, nothing on it. Satisfying. I am seriously going to have to try this again. Thanks for your help. Good channel.
@@watermelonlalala Cool - good luck this year.
@@TheBackGardenYard Thank you!
The leaves are DELICIOUS to eat!!!
I agree - they are very tasty! Especially the young ones in soups or stir fry. Thanks for the comment.
Years ago, I worked at a garden center, we would " steam" soil with hot water in a contraption that kind of looked like a long smoker, but it steamed/cooked the damp soil instead.
That's probably a good idea to sterilize the soil also. I would then need to dry the mud though.
Thanks for all that you do
Thanks for the kind words yolanda, and thanks for watching.
Thanks! I located "I can't believe its Chicken" locally after your last year's video with the comparison. Have fun growing and starting your seeds. :)
I bought the jiffy seed starting mix last year. Had to fight fungus gnats all the while and a lot of my starts were weak or didn't survive. Lesson learned.
Too all them weed seeds, bugs, mold RIP
Thanks for the video. What can be used if don't have garden soil to use (just beginning to garden)?
I don't think the garden soil is that necessary. You could supplement with worm castings but that could get pricey.
Yes, the garden soil is free, and this mix is more than just seed starting mix, because it can be used to grow out your seedlings for a month or so until the weather is warm enough to transplant into the regular garden. I did a video of just playsand and manure last year, and got surprising results with just plain playsand doing very well as a seed starting mix by itself.
I would just 30 scoops of potting soil and 30 scoops of play sand, if you don't have garden soil to add to your mix.
Why are you giving Walmart a pass? If they sell them they are completely responsible. I'd get my money back and put up a bad review. They'll only change if it costs them money.
You are absolutely right, and that's why I put up this video to warn people about what they are selling in those prepackaged bags with the pretty pictures.
The proverbial silver lining.
this was great very informative
Thank you. I think Walmart is not thought about often as a garden center, but they really do have competitive prices.
I would think at least the partially eaten ones that sprouted could be turned around as new plantings. I'm no farmer just my two cents.
Yes, I did keep one sprouted sweet poptato plant (slip) and over wintered it in the greenhouse and in the basement during our 13 degree freeze, and I'm about to make a video on how to grow many new slips from the original one. Thanks for the suggestion.
Purple inside? Are those Okinawan sweet potatoes? I grew those on the Big Island in Hawaii and they could not be stopped even though I grew them in a mixture of the limited soil and crushed basaltic rock at around 3000' elevation. Warm days around 80-85 degrees and mild nights around 50-60 degrees. If I so much as dropped one small piece on the ground it would take off.
I bought the sweet potato at the Asian Market, so I assume it is of an Asian variety.
@@TheBackGardenYard They are the very best imo.
Tell us how to grow and store sweet potatoes for the seed for next year's garden 😊
Yes, I am overwintering some slips right now - you will see how to do that in a future video.
Love your sweet potato videos ❤ !!!!!!! They are the best I've ever seen !!!! Thank you !!!!❤😊
Thanks, I appreciate that!
Love your sweet potatoe videos ❤ !!!!!!!
WalFart can be a real wild card at times. You never know what you're going to get. Better things to come, Farmer Bob.
Yea, after same problem last year, fool me twice, shame on me I guess, lol.
The bare roots look like that. I bought some from Home Depot and they were completely dead. I got a refund but I soaked them in water for a week or so. Some started growing leaves. I kept soaking the rest and in the end I tossed out maybe 4. So don’t give up on them.
Yes, I linked last year's Walmart Strawberry video at the end of this video. I was able to coax a few to survive last year, but the plants were weak and by the time they got strong, the spring growing season was almost over. We should be able to buy the plants, get them going, and harvest strawberries in May. I have ordered from the mail order companies and received healthy live plants that produced the first year, but they cost quite a bit more.
What's the npk for all black cow is 05 05 05 point
Goodness, think they grow June bearing down south as annual. Maybe store in fridge after June. Nothing surprises me with strawberries.
Yes, and the plants will survive the winter. I have dug some up and over wintered them in the greenhouse, and they will do nice this year.
Aren't you supposed to soak them in water overnight? Doubt if it would have made any difference with those though.
I didn't show it on the video, but I soaked them heavily after I planted them. I believe the roots had sprouted and died while in the packaging, and they just seemed lifeless. Usually there are some white roots if there is any life left in the plant. As I showed for most of them, black roots and dead.
Great tips on the packaged plants thanks!
Yes, I really like the prices they have, but I'm disappointed with those packaged plants... My strawberry video will be out Friday, and you will see what I mean. Thanks for watching.
Thankyou this was really useful.x
And thank you for watching. Walmart still has some of the best prices on many items, but their seeds are not any cheaper than most of the competition. And those pre packaged plant items - they really need to change what they are doing there, imo. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for demonstrating how easy it is to take a soil sample that doesn't cost a lot of money. I think ours here in Shelby County, Alabama had gone up $10 or $12 last year, but still much less than some soil test kits I have seen online. It will be interesting to see your results and what you do in your garden based on the information. I hope you have a great garden year in 2025!
Looks delicious!
They really are. A little chewier than asparagus, but packed with flavor.
Very helpful!
Very interesting! I guess the big surprise is how well the play sand did 🤔
Yes, since all the nutrients needed to sprout a seed are in the seed, I wasn't surprised. But I was surprised at how well they grew the first few days with no added nutrients. Thanks for watching.
Still looks great!
Thank you - we had fresh veggies today from the winter garden. However lows of 12 and 3 days of not above 32 with more snow will likely finish it off. But the good NEWS is I start snow peas and more lettuce in Feb. Thanks for watching.
Imposters got to go. Keep those plants and family warm. We're about to get some snow tomorrow here in the northeast so I'll be dreaming of spring planting while the snow falls. All the best, friend.
Lol, thank you very much. Yes, I should be just chilling and taking the month off, but us gardeners always have to be doing something it seems. Yes, the whole country is about to be blasted by the artic blast I'm afraid, but then comes the Jan. thaw, I hope. Stay safe and thanks for watching.
Great video! I’ve got those wild strawberries all over my property, they’re cute but taste terrible!! Stay warm this week💚🌱
Yes, the wild strawberries make a great ground cover, but they are just too invasive... Stay safe with the coming freeze.
What is the variety of strawberry? Stores like to sell these ornamental strawberries for flower pots there're OK but, lots of flowers, runners, crowns, & small berries.
The link I put about Walmart bare root strawberries last year, shows the varieties. These didn't make a lot of berries, because it took so long to bring them back to life last year from the bare roots. I may make a similar video this year, but will start earlier.
@TheBackGardenYard oh OK, allstar and quinault should be fine. Keeping strawberries up on bush mounds and not watering directly helped me with rotting.
@@massriver Yes, I have problems with slugs hiding in the straw mulch that I use around my berries. But I agree with the mounding idea 100%.
@@TheBackGardenYard got the mound method from Asia channel. Was recently watching, they had must have been 5acres green knotted netting over hole field. The straw was off to the sides. SlugO works but, something eats it and have to hide most under flat rock or under weed block around perimeter.
WOW I would have never known that 😮 Thank you Brother. Stay safe and warm 😊❤
Yes, I have never over wintered strawberries, but I'm excited they are already blooming. Hopefully I can get a big crop from these plants this year, now that I have got the imposters out. You stay warm and safe also...
@TheBackGardenYard yes Sir, yall too Brother
Thanks for the update, I really enjoy your channel
And thank you for the kind comments. Are you planting a garden this spring?
@@TheBackGardenYard Yes!! Last year was a disaster, this year I will stay away from Black Kow it ruined my garden. I'm hoping to find some local compost this time. I'm in Mi 6b growing season is short 😕
@@yolandawatson9949 As you see in today's video, I'm iced in right now. Hard to believe only 4 weeks until I start some lettuce and snow peas!
Some mini homemade hoop covers and you could still be out there gardening.
Believe me, in years past I've tried similar, but the results didn't justify the efforts. Thanks for watching though.
The Black Kow dorked my garden soil for about 5-6 years. The cattle manure will have an herbicide in it called Grayzon. Grazon is applied in pastures, and cattle eat it, then it ends up in the manure. It will effect every vegetable crop you plant for the next 5-6 years. Unless you source your cattle manure from a reliable source that does not use herbicides, it's not worth using in your garden. It used to be my go-to amendment. But, it destroyed my garden.
I've been using the bagged composts for over 20 years, and I have seen it change. The results of my video where I grow tested them against plain play sand is disturbing.
Love your ceries. ❤
Thank you susan - I am about to start the 2025 sweet potato series with the slip that I am overwintering!
But you dont show how you cut it to pieces
Yes, that was a common criticism of the video. I did unearth the pieces and show them in the next video in the series. Thanks for watching
I have had wild persimmons here in Alabama & they puckered my mouth (yuk). Not ripe enough I guess. My mom had an asian persimmon that she loved. I finally tried one & it was DELICIOUS. It was so ripe I just squeezed it over yogurt, so good. I have read you can propagate these trees, have you tried?
Yes. My wife grafts cuttings onto some of the root stocks that have come up from previous trees that we had, and now we have 4 trees instead of one.
WOW that's a lot. Oh I wish we could grow strawberries. I don't know what kind to get here in Texas 9b. You have a huge garden. Happy New Year to you and your family 😊❤
Strawberries are one of the easiest fruits to grow. Just about any brand of strawberry will be good, except I don't recommend the extra huge hybrid kind, as they seem to have as much flavor as the smaller berries, and I seem to lose more to birds, squirrels, chipmunks, and insects before they are ripened. In 9B you could probably buy the bare root plants sold in Walmart and Home Depot and just set them in the ground at the end of January and be eating strawberries in late April and early May. That's why I'm overwintering mine in the greenhouse, to get an earlier start this year, as last year mine didn't produce until late May, and it was mostly too late.
It's really nice seeing your winter garden, you are an inspiration Thank you!
Thank you so much for being a subscriber and commenting Yolanda. I wish you and yours a Happy New Year.
Fantastic to have all of that still growing!! Happy New Year!!💚💚
Thanks for the kind words. And a Happy and a Green Growing New Year to you!
Hopefully it doesn't kill your Hydraniums with the chemicals on them from the Paint. I know I wouldn't Chance it
No, The heads of the old flowers are completely dead down about 12 inches until I hit green wood. I normally prune them back to that level every winter anyway, but decided to have a bit of fun and make the yard more interesting this year. Some visitors have been flabbergasted when they have seen them, lol.
Gorgeous 😊
LOL - just fun!
WOW what a difference. I would have never thought of that. Beautiful 😊❤
Thanks Melinda - We actually picked several stems and brought them into a vase in the house and can enjoy them all winter. HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and yours.
@TheBackGardenYard Happy New Year and FATHER GOD bless you Brother and your family IN JESUS NAME AMEN AND AMEN
Haha this is great!! Happy New Year!!
Thank You - I've been wanting to do that for several years and finally got it done. Happy New Year to you and your Channel!
Do you know where I can buy true yams
I would try an Asian Market if you have one in your area. Otherwise, I'm sure you could find them on Amazon, however likely very pricey with that route. A yam is very similar in appearance to the Taro roots you see in my video, however they generally are much larger.
If you can only source compost from big box stores like lowes or home depot, black kow is probably your best option. It's not terrible, but also not fantastic. I have used it multiple times and have had good yields in areas where I mixed it in. But I have also noticed their quality has gone down in the past couple years. Your best option is to find local compost companies if you are buying, with the number 1 option being to make it yourself, but that takes time.
Yes, I found some chicken compost from South Carolina at my local nursery and it is giving me the best results now. I am starting to believe the folks that say the herbicides farmers are using in their fields are stunting the crops that are using the bagged cow manure compost for fertilizer.
@@TheBackGardenYard I agree, there is a ton of evidence that 2-4-D specifically can leech through into composted cattle manure. I personally have not experienced that problem yet, but there are people who are swearing by it. Mushroom compost is probably the best compost product I have ever used and is 100% safe to use, but it is not cheap at all.
Wish I could find one at this price, they are 3 times this price...
Every now and then Walmart puts some prices on line that I wouldn't believe if they were on some unknown site. And I checked later and they were offering the same one for $139. I guess it was a close out, because I see the new models of the same tiller are now painted black and selling for $149. I used it several times for weeding between my rows last year, and it worked great for that job. Thanks for watching.
