HOW TO PLANT A FALL GARDEN WITH "RAISED BEDS" IN A REGULAR GARDEN

Mounding your rows into a "raised bed" format works great to grow fall and winter vegetable and greens. It's not as good for spring and summer gardens because the mounds of soil will dry out fast and will need constant watering. The dirt mounds allow the roots of plants with shallow roots such as radishes, lettuce, leafy greens, etc. to easily go down into the soil and produce sturdy plants. In this video, I show you how I do it, and how I prepare the soil for the fall garden.

You should consider not tilling and adding compost instead, using the no dig method. The tilling disturbs the life in the soil and it gets harder and harder over time. That being said, your veggie babies look great. Just suggesting an idea that will be better for your soil life and easier for you in the long run. Just dump compost over your garden every year and eventually your soil will become so soft and easy to plant in and move about however you want without pulling out machinery. Thanks for sharing.

I appreciate your thoughts, however it just wouldn't work here. As you can tell by the color of my soil, despite 13 years of adding compost and mulch, the soil is still very much clay based, and gets very compacted in the summer. Also, the land is sloped on a hillside, so I need to move the soil to keep it from washing away. Thanks for watching.
