Hi Emma, when I read one of my English books, There is a word used in one sentence not sounding right to me. “AS 4100 has no specific provisions for determinating forces involved in prying force”. Here determinating sounds weird to me. Determining sounds more comfortable from my point of view. Could you please confirm

In my opinion, fluency is when your confidence let words flow directly and automatically from brain to mouth, with no need to think about HOW you say something but only WHAT you want to say.
Exactly as you do every time you have to say something in your native language.
Language is a tool (actually the first we learn from the very beginning of our life), and as with any other tool you don’t think too much before using it when you’re an expert...you just use it...
Of course you need a lot of practice.
BTW, Emma you’re great! I really feel comfortable with your way of teaching.
You’re clear, neither too fast (I’m not a native speaker) nor too slow (I’m not a dumb)...
And I love your radiance!! 🌞
Keep up the good work 💪👍

Your video has saved me from giving up myself and I really want to thank you a lot.
Born as a Chinese, I don’t really have the chance to learn how to speak and pronounce English properly for the past 15 years. But it actually doesn't affect me much because I never need to use English to communicate back in my own country.
However, things change after I have to study overseas alone as I receive a scholarship offered me to study in Singapore. So I am forced to learn English in order to interact with other people.
However, the process of learning English is TRAUMATIC.
The school understands that because we do not have strong English foundation, they actually arrange for us English Bridging Class for us and we are actually quite grateful for that.
The teacher who is appointed to teach us English keep criticising us that we have ”weird, funny foreign accent” and keep humiliating us in front of the whole class whenever our pronunciation is inaccurate.
Although she keeps saying that she criticises us is because she hopes that we can improve, but she NEVER really teaches us how to pronounce the words accurately.
I even had several emotional breakdowns after she makes fun of my weird pronunciation in front of the class. After being taught by her, English is like a nightmare for me and every time I try to speak English, I am so self-conscious and nervous, afraid to make another silly pronunciation mistake.
However, after watching your video, I feel that I can be more confident, I don't really need to care what she thinks of me as I am learning English for myself. And your videos about the correct ways to pronounce certain vowels and words are really very useful for me to improve my pronunciation.
Thank you a lot, without your videos I really don't know how to overcome my fear towards English. 🙏🏻 How much I hope that you are my English teacher.

Fluency for me means to be able to communicate with native speakers without feeling any difficulty in language. It also means an 8.5 in IELTS speaking test. And it is not only about the language, but the ability to tell a story effectively to someone. Sometimes I find it hard to tell a story effectively even using my 1st language. But it is important if we want to speak fluently. Therefore, I think, fluency means good language knowledge and good story telling skills.

It also reflects the desire of being understood when I attend business meetings , seminars or even a job interview .I must mention that fluency comprises the ability of reading newspapers and magazines without looking up for the meaning of many words . Thanks a Million. I was born in the United kingdom, taken to Africa at age 6, had my primary and secondary schooling there. I came back to live in the United kingdom afterwards having developed a fluent but strong accent. I have lived in the Uk over 30 years and my accent never changed. I have of recent started some voice recordings on podcasting and noticed how awful i sounded compared to many broadcating voices and knew i had to do some intonation adjustments. Through this platform i have begun to adjust my pronounciations. I also listen to professsionals speak on other Media. I have decided to learn a little bit more before i resume podcasting.

I just now enthusiastically subscribed to your channel! I’m from almost literally, the center of Missouri. We have what’s best termed, a “Midwestern rural” dialect here. Unless one reads voraciously from childhood or becomes reasonably traveled, our English here can become atrophied for life! You could say when I was a kid, we just went to school to learn the REST of the English language. We only utilized about half😂 I married a German girl when I was a young man and took it upon myself to learn German... if you REALLY wanna truly appreciate the beautiful absurdities of English.. learn another language!
Things just jumped right out at me from hearing and putting things a different way.. really.. think about the term to “turn” something “on/off”, “pull over”, our remarkably complex system of societal pleasantries.. the use of “sorry” as you mentioned above is one example. A German I knew once asked me, genuinely wondering, “when Americans ask you how you are doing.. they do not really want to know do they?”

In my point of view, the way i define fluency is when you are able and capable to exchange your ideas to someone or somebody spontaneously, confidently & effortlessly regardless of the topic/context.

I would like to share what is fluency for me. Of course it's most important for me to speak more like a native speaker. I usually get stuck while having a speech about something in front of my classmates. I get stuck to remember vocabulary words, even I'm totally weak in grammar parts. All things considered, fluency means a good vocabulary skills, to talk fast, to link words, to be good at grammar skills and obviously not to get nervous in front my classmates and my teacher.

I have been living and working in Australia for many years. I have no problem with professional English or professional conversation in English. However, I still hesitate to call myself a fluent speaker of English language. To me, "an eloquent speaker should be able to carry on a social conversation with a native speaker/s for an extended period, e.g. hours".

When we talk about fluency in the context of English learning we shoud take into consideration five basic skills: listening, speaking, writing, reading and of cource the last but not least grammar. While we achieve the satisfactory level to use them practically without any special problem, we can say that we follow to the fluency.

Fluency for me means the opening to different new cosmos, horizonts and ways to look at this world and its lifetime and routine. Each language is as well as a goggle for me. It also helps me to never forget that I'm not alone in this earth with only my culture. I 🖤 challenges and knowing, if those even exist, the human extremes.
