- In the final video from our visit to Propstore's UK headquarters, Adam sits down with Propstore founder and CEO Stephen Lane in his office to examine two of his most prized pieces of filmmaking history. The first is an original Tusken Raider mask from Star Wars--screen matched as the very first one we see on screen that Luke encounters at the beginning of the film! Adam and Stephen also examine an art department maquette of the Space Jockey from Ridley Scott's Alien, screen matched from behind-the-scenes photos as a sculpture worked on by H.R. Giger!

The very first Tusken Raider you see in SW, and this is that very helmet. Just incredible.
No it ain't. No breather and only 4 horns. Go check out the scene from the movie. Adam has been duped by another fake again. Like the fake suits from Star Trek 2. Lol It's such a giveaway that Adam has never watched any of these movies or he spot the most obvious things. Oh but wait you didn't spot that either...
@@Me-qp8vz so I read your comment and just went and checked the scene in question. You are correct it is not the first Tusken Raider seen on screen but it is the one that attacks Luke which is what the owner said, and yes it is missing the breather piece.

I know Adam took detailed measurements and everything to recreate the raider mask. I think it would be great to show us the process he takes when doing so.

Yes ill guess it Geiger and nobody else who painted them used air brushes! Cause that way ill get to make the baseless claim Geiger painted it!
Tho i would have thought Geiger would have done a better job painting it!
The best way to do this is just to scan it. There are more and more 3d scanners that are affordable/cheap. But I’m not sure if they’re accurate enough yet. However for this, that’s how I would approach it since you simply would not have the ability to go back and fourth measuring multiple times. That and maybe a couple of reference measurements with a decent digital caliper

as someone who rejected star wars for a long long time, just because it was the popular thing to like it and everyone was pressuring me to watch it, im only now watching the movies, im happy i have such a backlog of star wars related stuff from adam to watch
I saw Star Wars in the theater when it came out in 1977. I was 10 and i was absolutely captivated by it. I never thought people would still be this into it 45 years later.
Yes, although we all went crazy for the toys, t shirts and model kits at the time, I would never have believed that I would still be buying them in my 50s.
I never thought Disney would ruin it.
If you really want to nerd out, visit Galaxy's Edge at Disney in Orlando. I'm 52. I was 7 in 1977. I really felt like a kid again, and enjoyed it immensely. They really did a great job. I mean they have a full size replica of the Millenium Falcon. You can go inside, and stand next to the chess table, and walk down the hall to the cockpit. And of course pretend to fly it. Another massive room you walk in to, and it's filled with stormtroopers. The galaxy is behind them in a giant docking area, with tie fighters and destroyers flying by.
I remember being blown away when I found out that one scene of the Tuscan Raider waving his stick up and down was actually him doing it once and then playing it back over again. I’d seen it a million times and never noticed.
Did you notice the breather and 5 horns? That means this helmet is fake. It doesn't have them!
@@Me-qp8vz the breather is separate part and it has the 4 horns in the scene (you may be mistaking a piece of cloth sticking up). I just went and looked at the scene.

It's kind of obvious to me, but it's fitting, gives them a kind of inhuman movement.
Hey Adam, I know my comment is among literal hundreds, but I just want to let you know that I would gleefully watch these videos with Stephen Lane **all** **day**. Even for occasional props that don’t have any particular resonance or relevance to my pop culture experience, just the passion and joy oozing out of both of you while discussing such interesting pieces - chef’s kiss. Keep these coming, early and often.
Whist appreciating Adam's vast experience, surely I'm not the only one totally freaked out by his behaviour with fragile/valuable/rare props and models. His hand waving, touching, his moving about of objects and apparent near misses are frightening and seem to trigger fear in those owning/showing these items.
These props have been repaired multiple times. They have found stuff in wet garages poor collections etc. When they found the Nostromo there were 2 dead opossums they later refinished it. But I know what you mean

You can see Stephen cringe when he gets near it. I'm not surprised, considering how careless Adam can be in his own shop, I wish he'd at least ask permission before moving stuff.
@@HumanHamCube so what if they've been repaired. Stephen has taken great care and spent a lot of money to get these items to where they are. Adam should be more respectful of other people's shit.
Props are rarely built to heirloom quality … collectors understand this and are likely using Adam Savage & the Tested platform to add pro menace and interest to their item or collection… I assure you the $9 wig stand the mask was displayed on was in limited jeopardy and the display case glass removal before they filmed was the scariest action of that day 😊

It's so cool to know that madman Giger actually worked on it, and that the Tusken raider mask is the one that millions of people were introduced to in A New Hope, truly iconic pieces.

I really have not had an interest in props or costumes…… Until I found Adams Tested and his love and affection for these things! I have built soooo many thing’s recently inspired by Adam. And what’s crazy is he’s just like us. Seeing these videos has given me a new appreciation for many things about him. Being a star causes almost immortality and an idea of yeah they are perfect and never screw up. Well… 😂 Thank you Tested and all involved! ❤

With that thought in mind, I almost lost it when Adam points out at 9:18 how it's "not perfectly symmetrical and has a bit of a lean on the left side" 😂😂😂😂
The coloring of the leather on the mask is due to the presence of moisture in the air and leather and the aluminium. Metals often have that effect on leather. Sometimes it's because of the way the leather was tanned and sometimes it's a reaction to something else briefly coming into contact. Most of the time it is permanent. I've had it happen to several of my own projects.
I'm not into movie memorabilia but these are cool af! Imagine having those sat on your mantle piece!? Just cool!
The tusken raiders gave me nightmares as a young guy. Was 11 when star wars came out. Loved the "Donkey laugh" for the voiceover for the attack screams. One of my absolute favorite parts from Aliens was the Space Jockey. Seeing a Engineer crawl into that seat, take a centuries long big breath, and have that suit encapsulate him was incredible.
My favorite thing about 50 year olds on the internet are their borderline incoherent schizophrenic ramblings.

I’m really glad he had the leather on the tusken mask rehydrated, so often you see props with leather just degraded because no one wants to touch them.
For me episode IV is special. And that classic Hildebrandts picture was the one my brother and I had on our room wall. To this day I vividly remember staring at that poster and imagining flying out in an X-Wing. I going to savour this video

The excitement with the placement of the mask between Adam and Stephen makes me think of both fighting to put the mask on first to make the deepening sounds of braying donkeys with lighting speed flailing arms above holding the Tusken Gaffi Stick provided below the table. Only one leaves with the loser having the cranium caved in with the awaiting Banthas outside to take the Raider back to the Tatooine desert or nearest sand box provided by local city/county parks and recreation. "The mask, it's not hiding you: IT ALLOWS YOU TO BE YOUR MOST AUTHENTIC YOU" ...Tuskin Raider a.k.a sand person 1979.
and to think I'm 20mins drive from Propstore UK. I need to get my friend (a good friend of Stephens) to take me along one day!

The original Star Wars, the movie that came out in 1977, is really the only one that was really great. I too saw it that year when I was 8 at "the cinema" like the subject of this video.
And like it did for him, it blew me away. A totally magical experience.
None of the others ever matched it.
I only saw that one and only once in 77, indeed it was good enough.
I've always loved this mask design. One of my favorite Star Wars designs.
The amount of geekgasm's that Adam has had makes on wonder why he hasn't retired lol. His age and still learning as a child does is inspirational. Keep on with the creation brother and God bless you friend!
When I was little my older brother had a handful of those 12 inch Kenner dolls.. cough-cough I mean action figures and one of them was the Tusken Raider. I remember that one was always my favorite to play with. Such a unique and intriguing design and to this day is one of my favorite costumes in all of Star Wars.
I think this as a build would be right up Adam's alley. Machined aluminum, leather, canvas, the heavy weathering. Perfect.

I love the fact that nothing on the Tusken Raider mask is symmetrical. The groves in the snout are off-center, and the tusks are different from each other. Love that!

As someone who studied film design & has written several pieces on the design of Alien, HR Giger’s large format books are an absolute must own.
I have the original version of ‘Giger’s Alien’ along with ‘Species Design’ & ‘Film Design’ in my collection; along with several others.
Sadly I’ve not yet acquired a copy of the mighty tome that is Necronomicon…..due to the insane resale price.

It belongs in a museum.
If you'd like more material like this in museums, the best way to help achieve that is to visit the prop museums that currently exist, and encourage others to do the same. Appreciation for these things as valuable art / artifacts is still pretty new, and interest amongst the general public - while growing - remains low.
I liked that character because it wasn't your standard space helmet robot type character you'd expect from Sci-fi movies leading up to 1977. It showed me as a 7 year old very quickly how different Star Wars was going to be. Which is what you'd expect from a segment of time taking place where universal travel to various planets is possible.
This was by far my favorite of the original action figures.

I have always thought that was one of the best masks from the franchise. It looks like something that actually could exist on a desert planet. I'm VERY surprised that Lucasfilm let it go...

Less was kept from the first film because they didn't know that it was going to be such a massive hit. Ironically, in many respects Empire and Jedi are the harder of the three to collect original material from, because while they built more for those, a much higher percentage was retained.
you kind of have to remember that Star Wars also started during a time when film collectibles weren't that big of a deal.. the culture just wasn't really there. Same with merchandising.
So most films of that era and earlier would wrap and then most props just either thrown away to make space or maybe given as gifts and souvenirs. After all, the prop isn't needed anymore. So most props that do survive from way back when tend to only exist because luckily some crew member thought it was kinda cool or someone forgot to throw it out or someone found it in the trash etc
Originally the most sought after "film memorabilia" were autographs or film posters.

From a backstory perspective, I would be curious how nomadic tribesmen would have access to lathes and milling machines, and just what those parts were for. I also wonder what form of life they might be, assuming they are not human.
I'm really interested in that Star Wars poster on the wall. It is different from a similar version of the poster which is much more common.
