    99% of my wardrobe is thrift ed. Style today is soooo individual that anything goes. And you are absolutely correct that vintage is where you're most likely to find quality!!!

    I bought that Fossil belt in brown in 2001 (approximately). I paid around $90 Canadian. I still have it. I absolutely love the details on it. It's a collector's belt for me.

    Couldn’t agree more with the throw away nasty fast fashion that is clogging up the landfills and thrift stores. The quality of vintage is evident in the feel and construction of the pieces. If you want quality and are not able to shop at a high end store, thrift, consignment and resell shops are the answer.

    Beautiful pieces! For me personally, not only do the natural fibers hold up and look better but I have learned they are much better health wise for our bodies. I avoid plastic bottles, containers, etc and yet I am wearing plastic clothes as most manmade clothes are made out of plastics/petrochemicals. Nutritionist Mary Ruddick really opened my eyes to the fact that that is not a good idea. I know, I am a bit of a freak :). Today while thrifting I found two burgundy sweaters. One by Faded Glory that is 100 percent cotton AND organic and the other is a Ralph Lauren cable knit 100 percent cotton. Love burgundy and navy. Like you, my heart breaks that we are losing quality.

I’ve been so discouraged by today’s clothing and how it falls apart so easily but I haven’t known where to go to get educated on what to look for/be aware of when shopping! Have you read American Flannel? It explains what happened to a lot of textile quality since the 90's. I remember the before- i have garments from the before- and it's so dramatic. The reasons and loss of skills are really sad but it's an interesting and informative book.

    I found a well made viscose sleeveless maxi dress for $1 it must be at least 10 years old because it really is quality just the fabric alone you can't find retail anymore and 2 weeks ago after sifting through a pile of polyester garbage at lifeline thrift store I found a nice viscose blouse white with small black love hearts. It was a long sleeve blouse with a collar but I cut off the collar, cut the sleeves short and cropped the hem with pinking scissors. Great for our very hot summer. Cheers

A 1960's short jacket with fur collar and a fur pillbox hat!! @@lauravonv if I could add a picture, I would! The pillbox hat is fur around with a fabric top (stitched in an overlapping fabric) with a bit of the fabric cascading down the back. The interior is lined with a satin-type lining and the large label of the furrier. It is very well made and was well cared for, no stains, tears or missing fur!

    I have sewn and upcycled probably close to a hundred garments in the last few years. I have literally not purchased new clothes for myself since pre-plague, and I buy new for my son and husband as little as humanly possible (barring undergarments, though I manufacture those, too). The $/wear is just not worth it to pay normal retail prices. I should not have to modify or repair a brand new garment just for it to function correctly. Oh yeah, and the slavery and exploitation of garment fabricators is nauseating to think about, so I inwardly die a little when people tell me they got something from Shein or Temu. But time is money, and they don't have much of either. They have time to shop online for cheap clothes, but not two hours on a Thursday morning to hit the thrift store in the basement of the senior's centre...
    My best recent find was an older cotton Chaps by Ralph Lauren sweater that must have come from an elder gentleman who passed on, because I picked up a cotton Albert Nippon zippered cardigan the same day, and there were handful of other upscale brand men's sweaters (they just didn't fit my husband's preferences). They were both $1, the standard price at that store for an adult garment that isn't on the "special" rack. My husband loves them both so much that they're filthy and stained after less than a month, because he doesn't distinguish between "good" clothes and "daily" clothes. He's got clothes he likes and wears to rags, and clothes for weddings and funerals, with the exception of a handful of high quality cotton and rayon button ups for going out to dinner or visiting family. A sweater is a practical garment, and shall be treated as such. He's really getting value out of that two bucks! They're both so beautifully made out of a densely spun, long-staple cotton (they're both slightly glossy, the Albert Nippon more so), they'll be structurally sound for years even with heavy use.

    I went to a business Christmas party 8-10 years ago and was horrified at the outfits some of the young staffers were wearing. Sparkly and colorful, so festive, I guess. But also Skin tight, flimsy, almost indecently short, UNflattering. I wondered if they had actually looked in a mirror at any point. I was embarrassed for them. A nice pair of black pants and a simple or sparkly top with some costume jewelry would have looked so much better.

    • @lauravonv
      @lauravonv  3 месяца назад

      I have a love hate relationship with it I think. In a lot of cases I think it’s green washing. But I also think some polyester can be done really nicely. And serve a purpose to the garment. So when it’s recycled, that’s even better. I’ll definitely mention this in my next video because I think it’s a great topic. If you have any thoughts I’d love to hear them ❤️❤️

    Can you do a version of this for plus size? Or a challenge to style either real subscriber or imaginary, pick 3 outfits plus size good quality stylish thrifted items. I love watching you & the peices you find but so totally can’t relate to your size. I fall between standard & plus am very curvy. For most of my life clothes were not cut for me even when I was a size 4 because of my curves. I unfortunately did turn to shein for a good year buying all the goth leaning basics and have had pretty good success. But hearing how the actual materials the clothes are made of can potentially make you sick (besides all of the other negative things) made me decide not to buy from them anymore. Luckily I don’t “need” to buy a lot of anything but sometimes I just want to & while I enjoy thrifting it’s never as amazing for me as it is for my “skinny” friends (I can’t think of a pc word sorry no hate - is thin better 😬) anyway just super curious if your trained eye can find the goods 🖤

    • @lauravonv

      I love your idea of doing a subscriber challenge!! That could be a lot of fun. I see what you mean a lot while I’m out thrifting. The fashion industry is only just recently catching up on size inclusivity and still has a LOT of work to do. So the lack of good quality at the thrift in various sizes is very noticeable. ❤️❤️
      I think it would be really interesting to see though if I could find good stuff in different sizes. I think the most interesting challenge would be shopping for a different style/aesthetic. I’m up for the challenge though🙌

    There have always been tatty, poor quality clothes. But only the good clothes are kept and cared for, so that they last. It’s a fallacy that vintage clothes were good quality and contemporary clothes aren’t. The good pieces of today will last and the tat will go to landfill, and in thirty years the thrift shoppers will say how great the clothing of the twenties was, much better than their new stuff, because they only see the good pieces. When I was young in the 70s we used to lament the poor quality clothing of the time, and hark back to the vintage clothing of the forties.
