  • We finally made it to North East Brazil!
What a surprising first day in Salvador, Bahia.
We had no idea there was going to be a huge street party!
It was actually a religious traditions from the Catholic/ Afro-Brazilian candomblé beliefs.
The festival is called Lavage do Bonfim. Ceremonies, food, dancing, samba...you name it!
    What a great first day.

Hi Guys, hope your having a blast in Salvador! It can be kind of confusing to understand the concept of syncretism between the Christian religion and Candomble/Umbanda, someone already gave a brief explanaition before in the comments, but as a basic rundown on the history of it, basicaly in the times of slavery, the africans were prohibited and prosecured for practicing their religions and cults, so to be able to continue to pray to their deities (known as Orixás os Nksis, dependeding on the origin of the people), they used Christian images of saints as "representatives" to their own deities, being Jesus - Oxalá, Saint Barbara - Iansã, Saint George - Oxóssi in Bahia and Ogum in other parts of Brasil, Saint Lazarus - Omulu/Obaluaê as some examples.
The "perfume" that was sprayed on Ivana's hands is Alfazema, it is a liquid made from a type of lavender, and it is used as a spiritual cleanser in some of this rites, if you liked the smell of it, it is easily found on any drugstores, and can be used as a cologne also.
And to add a little bit more context, also as curiosity, the necklaces made from beads that a lot of people are wearing on the video and on the streets (you'll probably see a lot of people wearing them daily in Bahia) are called Guias (plural), they also have specific meanings according to their colors, shapes and sizes, examples: guias made with gold beads are tipically associated with Oxum, deity of sweet waters as rivers and waterfalls, also the deity of love and fertility; dark blue beads may reffer to Ogum, deity of the iron, battles and open paths, and so on.
And as a last piece of curiosity, music is a vital part of African and Afro-brazilian religions, usualy played in atabaques (set of 3 drums, mainly made of wood and animal hide) and agogos (the metal thing with 2 "heads" you can see someone playing in the video), these songs are usualy called Pontos (plural), and can be singed in portuguese or iorubá (African language mainly from western Africa), they were singing one on the sound truck.
Sorry for the massive comment, just trying to help with some info!
Enjoy Salvador, greetings and Axé! (it is a salutation that means "wish you good energies")

And she got the ribbon as a gift in green colour which means a lot of love on your way! Just love the way you both respect, learn and have fun about different cultures, super beautiful! Hope you stay longer, it would be nice to see you around the city! Can't wait for the next videos! Tip: try Acarajé from Dinha in Rio Vermelho district or in Cira in Itapuã ou Piatã districts! @michellegermano6056 Год назад +1

@@mmawithsubtitles7460 sim, claro.

You can visit Pelourinho during Carnival, as there are several attractions in the restaurants and on the street too, or you can go to Farol da Barra, which is where the Trios Elétricos are concentrated. If you don't want to be in the middle of the crowd, stay on the beach sand. Every year I go I stay on the beach sand and I manage to enjoy Carnival very well, because I can see the electric trios. minha opinião sobre os carnavais: não importa o Estado, evite os grandes blocos, os famosos, são cheios demais e mal da pra aproveitar.

Some tips for you guys about Carnaval: As you guys have already realized, we Brazillians are very emotional and warm (our latin blood) and Carnaval is like the apex of it. Mix it with a lot of alcohol and you can have a lot of problems in Carnaval... So if someone spill drinks on you or do something stupid, just ignore it, because it can become ugly (don't be afraid, if you're not hotheaded you will be fine). There's a LOT of theft too (because of the amount of people together and how easy it is), so watch your camera closely and leave your phone and other valuables like jewels at home (seriously). Also, this is a party where guys and girls go to kiss eachother too, so make sure to hold Ivana's hands or show somehow to other guys that she's with you, because the guys approach the girls very quickly and in a way that a american or canadian can understand as a sexual harassement, but here it is "normal". I have a sister living in the US and she said that there its very different and difficult to meet a guy... Even in nightclubs the americans fear to approach the girls haha. Last thing: As there wont be enough bathrooms, sometimes you will see people urinating in the streets, especially in Salvador. It's so bad the city had to create a law and started to fine people, but people just keep doing it. So i would recommend joining a small "bloco de canarval" or/and see the samba schools parade in Rio. Enjoy!

A curiosity about the ribbon: it is called "fitinha do Bonfim" or "Bomfim little ribbon" but it is also know as "Medida do Bonfim" or "Bonfim Measure" since its length (between the two little printed crosses) equals to the length of the arm of the Holy Cross of the Lord of Bonfim...

The syncretism between religions of African origin and Catholicism happened thereabout like this: At that time, the first Africans of Yoruba origin arrived in the country, a people who occupied the region where today are Nigeria, Benin and Togo. The religion of the Yoruba was candomblé, but they arrived in Brazil as slaves and could not worship their deities freely - you know, the official religion of the country was (and is) Catholicism. Because of this prohibition, the slaves started associating their deities with the Catholic saints in order to exercise their faith in disguise. As the Catholic saints are quite numerous, there are divinities that are identified with more than one saint. For example: Oxóssi, the king of the hunt, is associated with Saint George and Saint Sebastian.
Over time, even with the permission of the African religions, this connection between African religions and the Catholic religion has remained, almost as if they were the same religion, or, as some prefer, as a relationship of respect and peaceful coexistence!

    Welcome to Bahia!!!
You arrived here in a very special and meaningful day, since it is dedicated to celebrate the Senhor do Bonfim, with a centenary ceremony that starts with a crowded parade to transfer the holy image of Jesus crucified from a church 8 km away to the iconic Bonfim Church, where a mass is held.
It is also known as "Lavagem do Bonfim", since the stairs are washed by a group of "baianas", in preparation for the arrival of the holy image.
And the people mix religious feelings with the joy of pure fun and music.
The perfume is gently offered by the members of the group "Filhos de Gandhy", one of the more traditional in Bahia, with thousands of men dressed in white and blue clothes.
And about the caneta (pen): it was just a confusion from a simple man since it has a pronunciation close to Canada...
    Muuuuito bom!!!

well, you can rent an apartment in front of the party and watch from the distance. But the best experience is to enter a carnival block. It is safer and you have access to some infrastructure. BUT it is a long party, many hours of dancing...

If you can’t handle crowdedness, then Carnaval is definitely not for you. It doesn’t matter whether it’s celebrated on the streets, at a Sambodrome, at nightclubs or at social clubs, it will always be crowded and quite often things will get out of control in terms of crossing some boundaries. I think the best way for you to enjoy the experience of being close to the madness and still being comfortable in regards to physical distancing is to make your way into a VIP lounge at the Sambodrome in Rio. I have no idea how you could make this happen, but I’ll be cheering for you. A more feasible solution would be making yourselves invited to a party in a gated condo.

You have many options for Carnival. I thnk the best are RECIFE (which i highly recommend, with a very peculiar carnival, not so crowded and very historical too), RIO DE JANEIRO and obviously, SALVADOR ||| Thera are also literally thousands of cities, each one with their own traditions.

Guys, from now on, Salvador is gearing up towards carnaval. Rio, Salvador, Recife, the old cities from Minas (Yes, São João Del Rey and Ouro Preto had wicked carnaval parties) and recently São Paulo have the largest carnaval celebrations, drawing up to millions to the blocos (street bands, not the schools of samba). But you can still have it easy in Rio, for instance, cause the city is big and accomodates both the wild parties and the smaller ones, the bars and dances, and the quieter beaches. I think it is not much different in the other cities. The music, the mood, the price, the local culture do differ, but you don´t need to be squashed by the crowds all the time.
