The “Girls’ Girl”: She believes in uplifting other women, has a strong group of girlfriends, and always abides by the girl code. She’s also aware of oppressive systems like the patriarchy and often references feminist thinkers like Gloria Steinem, Bell Hooks, and more modern role models like AOC and Drew Afualo. The mainstream media’s definition of a “girls’ girl” has changed over time, but this modern understanding is a clear reaction to our current feminism in crisis. The modern girls’ girl can help, over time, to flatten hierarchical systems that prioritize order and control over happiness and connectedness.

2 Queens? How does that happen? Aside from the UK's Game of Thrones style of inbreeding, ..shudders..even still.. or do you mean that figuratively like "queen is a ride of die bff"? And if she doesn't tell you about some imperfection on your head but don't say anything then "honesty goes out the window as friendships don't live w.o. trust/honesty..even white lies bc if you're in that position then there must've been many small mistakes you've made in your life that led you to this moment and u can always say "don't ask questions u don't want answers to" but that's also conflicting bc you're simultaneously cruel and honest.. but too many women lie to their friends more than themselves..agreeing rather than getting to the root of certain patterns esp when they confide in you with everything from cheating to make up and push up bras..They're like walking exaggerations of humans.

For me, my grandma is my female best friend which I know is sad but unfortunately it took me years to realize that my best friend at the time wasn’t my best friend. When I was a victim of SA, my friends turned against me because I was bringing “ negative vibes “ and I didn’t want to party anymore. I didn’t have the support from my friends at the time at all and felt more alone than ever. I would give anything to have a female friend who is there for me no matter what.

She is weird and cooky and down to earth and now that I am an adult, I see she's not embarrassing. She's always been there for me and let me be myself but also challenging me to be my best version of me. If your gma does that in any capacity, that's awesome. One female best friend still counts as one, in the weird wise words of Ghimli from LotR. 🥰
I hope you're doing okay now after the traumas you endured. Nothing makes you feel more alone than people discounting what happened to you. But just like working through your trauma, finding that wonderful quality friend takes time. She's out there for you, too. 🥰

One of my lifelong friends is a fellow abuse survivor who is in her fifties… I am closer to her than my mom (well bc my mom was a ringleader in my abuse and has internalized misogyny hahaha 😝)
Older women have a stability that I feel a lot of younger women can fail at for one reason or another… it’s been a huge comfort to know whatever happens, or how much time passes, we can meet up for coffee at the same spot we always meet at…
Many of my younger friends have had another friend of theirs act catty/shitty to me (I am a polarizing person) which places my new friend at odds with the friend that they’ve usually known for longer, and I end up feeling weird that it turns into a “me vs you” situation where my friend needs to choose.
I have never had this problem with older people, and I really think it comes down to maturity! 🤷🏼‍♀️

As such, that's a threat to a lot of things. And rather work on yourself and figure out why you feel threatened, it's easier to put down this person who is different and keep the status quo of misery. So remember, people, them putting you down says a lot about them and NOTHING about you. Be yourself and mind your own business, because minding their's will only bring you down and back to a misery you don't want to be in.

I was fired from my job working at a Unitarian church by OTHER WOMEN who became jealous of my power and influence. Soon after I found myself entering a committed relationship for the first time in three years with a man, in which there are more stereotypical gender roles at the height of when doing so was being bashed and criticized on TikTok.
I feel like in each situation I was the same “me” but the perceptions are generally warped, being a career oriented woman (even in an exploitative situation) was way more socially acceptable than being a housewife. In my heart I am the same but I see now how I am in many ways much better suited to the flow of homemaking rather than the competition and reputation destruction one must endure in competitive work environments.
Sometimes I feel forced into this role because of the other women… But the heart of the issue is making it okay or not okay to exist in certain roles as a woman, I am mind blown that we still need to fight for validity regardless of what we’re doing!
I don’t know if my situation would have been different if there were more “girl’s girls” where I was at but I do believe it’s an important distinction to make between a girl’s girl and a feminist’s girl; one is about supporting a oftentimes limited ideology and the other actually means supporting the individual to thrive, whatever that looks like.

It's nonsensical to try to separate a girl's girl from feminism as they are one and the same. Feminism has never been about bashing housewives despite the lies conservatives try to spread about it in that regard. Feminism does however critique privileged white women who are complicit in oppressing marginalized women and groups with less privileges (the Karens basically, who aren't necessarily housewives but can also be career women like Marjorie Taylor Green and Abby Shapiro).
All the white, extreme right people complaining about feminism bashing housewives will be the first to hurl sexist, racist, hateful comments towards economically poor black mothers and homemakers by calling them 'welfare queens' and what not. Their fake compassion for housewives is totally thrown out of the window then.

Like when all those brave women in Iran started fighting back against the government They had and still have my full undying support and love. Women can exist in the same spaces as each other and not feel the need to dominate. We can stand together and take up space together. Also it doesn't have to be the big grand gestures that uphold the sisterhood. it can be the small things. If a woman comes up to me needing a pad or a tampon I will either give her what I have or I will go and buy some for her. If she needs me to pretend to know her to get her way from a creep well in that moment we have known each other 15 years, we are besties and there is a whole back story. If you need me to hold your bag for a moment I will protect that goddamn bag with my life. I am there for you. I believe in you and I stand with you. I will hold your hand and walk through the fire with you. That is what true sisterhood is. Holding each others hands and facing the world together.

Personally, I think when other feminist attack men, even in response, we should just call that out as "not what femsnim is about" and move on. There is no point in defending it at all. That's not a hill worth dying on and I think it holds things back. I know, it sucks, it doesn't feel great, but in the long run I think it's more important to change the optics where these movements are weak, and focus on what matters (in this case, bringing women up). Those are just my thoughts, maybe I'm wrong. Open to hearing other ways of thinking if anybody wants to share!

@@singingsarah8133 I agree mostly BUT , I think we're talking about a small minority of men here. Most men defeinly don't hate women. But men tend to benefit more from the inbuilt sexism, misogyny , etc., in our society than women do. And as the genders are in many ways segregated, it can be hard for them to recognize their privilege. If you also consider that men have many struggles unique to being men, it complicates things because it makes it harder for many men to recognize that women have struggles unique to their gender (also because more than ever men are having a harder time making friends in general, and are spending less time with women etc.).

I still don’t like the term “ girls girl” because it disregards anyone outside of the gender normative. It only includes cisgender women. Nobody who’s queer. You can be feminine and queer. Many queer femmes are apart of the fight for reproductive rights just as much as cisgender women. Instead of saying girls girl. Let’s us the proper term intersectional Feminist. TikTok ran with this term and just decide to use it for a bunch of stereotypes like they always do. “Oh she’s not a girls girl because she has male friends and she wants to sleep with my boyfriend.” she called me out for saying something racist she’s not a girl girl. “ she called me out for saying something homophobic and trans phobic she’s not a girl girl.” it’s like no honey, she actually was calling you out and making you take responsibility for your crappy actions. It’s like TikTok only understand the half of the meaning of feminism, but they never go beyond it, or understand any nuances. Then they go out long to such a girls for being “pick me’s. For not being stereotypically feminine, having masculine interests for male attention, then proceeded to say that “she’s not a girls girl”. But not realizing that they are putting gender in a very narrow box and not realizing that your gender identity does not strictly fall under one category.

What bugs me the most is the oversimplification of feminism today with the whole "girl's girl" identity. Like, at any moment you can be identified as not one for something so silly and dumb, leaving all nuance out of any given situation. It seems like such a hostile environment where you can only be a yes man to all your fellow sister and one where you're not really allowed to call out another woman's disingenuous or passive aggressive behavior

And also it’s just like teaches the wrong ideas about relationships and about how to have a healthy relationship and how to be secure in your relationship and it’s weird because I feel like, as a millennial I feel like my education could’ve been a lot better and GenZ had access to way better education and I did but yeah I feel like they don’t appreciate it and they wanna live back in the early 2000s.

Im in nyc and was/am i part of every type of social circle through the years, but perhaps I was thinking that girls expressed intimate friendships differently and more publically..holding hands, sharing blankets, crying, cuddle, gossip, apologize and back together. Sounds great if you're a lesbian but I feel that the male code of conduct (drastically changing now) was more clearly defined. I suppose that's the #1 reason the dating world feels like these norms have tripled in complexities of the "woke world order." NYC is a massive cemetery for dead ovaries bc you decided to be a "cat person" for too long and now you're stuck filing lawsuits against some guy with a family, who might or might not have made an "inappropriate remark" to you at work. It's obviously not everyone but I just can't stop meeting the same person with the same personality 😟

Two movies from this decade -- Cartoon Saloon's "Wolfwalkers" and Pixar's "Turning Red" -- stand out for their focus on female friendships, something we still don't see often enough. After all, when young girls watch films like this, they may absorb the idea that friendships between and among girls are normal and (even better) important in those girls' lives. What are some other good examples of family films and TV shows that show strong, healthy bonds between girls?
