I am such a new fan! As someone who is new to backpacking, I love your simple explanations filled with education. Your videos are so easy to watch and make me smile. Keep it up!
+Kristen I Hi Kristen. Thanks for being a new fan. Enjoy my channel. I attempt to make videos that are fun to watch and educations. (sometimes a little silly).... .Stay tuned, Ken
This is awesome guys!!! This video should be a sticky for all newbies who would like to start pedalling away onto touring landscapes. Splendidly done indeed!!!
Great stuff Ken. The seep well worked very well and the chocolate and coffee is something I will have to try. Also liked the idea of the bike supporting the tarp. Oh the night shots Ken were just awesome. This was another "Start it up Man" video. Sandy
+Wiltshire Man Thanks Sandy. I've wanted to try making a seep well since seeing it for the first time on your channel several years ago. We have places in the swamp next to my house where it would be easy to make seeps.... but I've been afraid to try them, because there is heavy contamination of ground water in this area from agricultural chemicals and oil drilling pollution. Take care, my friend. Peace, Ken
Hi Ken that was a long one and i tried to watch nearly all of it, like your socks:-) and go course the demonstration of how to read the environment and find water, by the way i used to be a semiprofessional mountain bike racer until our first daughter joined us 11 years ago, so i still have a special connection to any mountain bike adventure, thanks for sharing my friend, Taro
+Taromovies Swiss Bushcraft & Survival Thanks for watching. Good to hear about mountain biking with your daughter 11 years ago. Yes, the video was very long... the longest I've ever released. Glad you watched most of it. The night lapse videos were awesome (alough I only showed a few seconds.) They deserve a separate video. Stay tuned.... ken
lol I'm not gona eat that. ... you heard me. lol Love u guys . Darby dead set on not trying that. Ken your amazing thanks for the awesome video. and love your socks.
hi Ken glad to see you make a bike camping video again great job i hang my trash up with my food bag away form camp anything food will bring into camp the trash will too
Ken! Nice backpack brotha. Hope it's working well for you. This video was so fun to watch because Melody and I spend so much time exploring that place. Thanks for teaching us about the seep. We saw that little house you guys found and we considered going back to camp in it, but the weather got bad, so we forgot. Thanks for the reminder. See you in May!
+State Parkers Got to love the backpack. Thanks brother. Yes, I remember you and melody exploring that same area and the same cabin. It was interesting, that we did not see it when riding the bikes multiple times in this part of the trail..... but when walking, it became obvious. Looking forward to the Spring Meetup. ...Ken
looks like a awesome outing you and darby had ken, i new you would change your camping spot when you found the frogs singing. i like the seep hole , it would have saved you from carrying the extra water. oh my 1OO people at the spring meet, they will be camping every where. that sounds awesome.. can't wait my friends to get together again.. peace ken. ..bill
+billy joe denny We had a blast Billy Joe. The campsite on the rock was much more comfortable than I expected.. The grasses made a big difference. Plus it was a remote area, I heard sounds from large 4 legged animals several times during the night... scary but good... Also can't wait till the metope!!!
Back in my youth when Westerns were king on TV, I think it was an episode of Big Valley or Bonanza, some folks dug a seep. I thought it was just Hollywood nonsense, so it was surprising to me to see on your video that this is indeed a thing. Amazing. Thank you for the video!
Nice video. Looking to go bike camping this summer for the first time here in Vermont. Love camping love biking. Can't be a bad combination. Take care, Al
Hi Ken, at 3:40 will the brush and tree branches overhead make that big of a difference in heat loss? Or does wind speed/shielding from wind make the most difference?
+Melvin Wei The difference depends on cloud over, humidity and wind speed. Fifty years ago (as part of my PhD dissertation) I studied microclimates and how invertebrates use them for thermal regulation .
I do the same thing, burning the inside of the cans to get the scent out. I'm guessing the plant was Sorrel? Loved the night sky and owls!! I think that pot thing was an old air cleaner of some kind from a vehicle or maybe a tractor but I'm not sure. That shelter setup with your bike is great for an emergency! Great water steep! Outstanding video Ken! Thanks for sharing your trip! ~Dawn
+SouthPaw Bushcraft You're welcome Dawn. I agree, it is probably from some type of engine part of air intake. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment. ATB, Ken
Greetings from Sweden, Kenneth. Nice video as allways. The thing you picked up in the house I'm pretty shure it's a part of a machine that separates the cream from milk. It looked like if there were several more parts to it on the floor. Keep up the filming!
Thank for watching from sweeten. That a fantastic answer. This was a farming area, years ago.... I'll check it out. Stay tuned for adventure my friend ...ken
Excellent video as always Kenneth and the nightlapse was spectacular. Looking forward to meet you and the gang in person if I make it past the "wait list" for the meet-up. Already have my flight to Nashville and rental car booked (yea, I don't want to drive from Florida even if is only a 12 hr drive for me LOL).
+El Cazador Hi El Cazador. Thanks for watching and commenting. I will probably release the complete night lapses as a separate video. They were beautiful...and each night was about 1 minute long. I hope to see you at the spring meetup. The wait list should soon release some spots. If not, I will make a video asking people who have decided to not attend to release their spots. If you want, you can also personally reserve an individual camping spot near the group site.... Then you'll get a chance to meet everyone ...
Cool beans that's a nice area. I reserved my camp site at the big south fork. Looking forward to seeing you and the gang. I will be in site B1 across from the group camp.
+Stanley Sprow Beautiful area. I'm ooking forward to seeing you, Stanley, at big south fork. Site 81 is near by ...and you'll have plenty of room. ...ken
Great video ken. Loved the special effects with the night sky. Would never have thought of using a bicycle for rigging a shelter, good one. And i agree with redsorgum, mystery item looked like an old fashioned oil bath air cleaner? Atb from neil over here in scotland, take care.
+Neil McCarron Thanks for watching at commenting Neil.. The go pro camera take excellent timbales photos. Most folks are saying this was an oil bath air cleaner.... bet it was... Take care, Ken
I like that Idea Ken another great video. You might want to share how you rigged out the bike and your thoughts on choosing the right bike, for bikepacking. Any roads up, another great video ken keep it up.
+bad hat You're reading my mind. In two weeks my son and I are planning a backpacking trip...and we will be riding different bikes and will probably talk about how we've rigged them, etc.
+KennethKramm I'm not so sure about reading minds, might see some stuff nobody should see ';o)...)And thinking back to my childhood I remember a red Schwinn Hornet that I rode all over Lucas county , camping, hunting, fishing and swimming, rode ol red from Maumee to the swimming pool in Perrysburg even rode her to my first (meet me at the Saturday Matinee , Dutch treat) date. Back then that was livin large cartoons a couple cliff hangers and the main attraction a cowboy movie yes sir ... liven large
+Piotrek J. Great question. The grey tent shelter belongs to Darby. I don't know where he purchased it. Send him a message on his RUclips Channel RiverBendSurvivl ruclips.net/user/RiverBendSurvival . Thanks for watching and commenting from Poland. ....ken
For a retiree Ken you're doing quite well as far as health and fitness go you know, you put me to shame really and I'm just into my mid fifties! I struggle doing what you do here in these vids, years of smoking and drinking and bad eating and living not a very healthy life I suppose, its all caught up with me now, but I've got to try, that's why I took hiking, and because I really like it too. Thanks Ken.
+James Stewart Dunn Thanks Jemes. You're still a kid! Smiling. No one can cage the past, but we have control of the future. Enjoy the moment. My health got much better after I retires 11 years ago. .... and time to enjoy the outdoors... It has been shown that exercising outdoors will improve physical health and mental outlook.
+James Stewart Dunn His James. Hope you enjoy the attached video that I made a few years ago. It describes the benefits of connecting with nature (helping to stay young). ruclips.net/video/yW614oEErIg/видео.html
Great and fun video to watch! You were talking about a seep to collect water. At least, that is the word I have heard. In the video description you are writing of digging a steep. So which word is correct? I ask since I am Swiss German. Great nature over there by the way!
+Waldläufer70 Seep is the word. Sorry for the confusion. I'll correct the description (darn self-correcting spelling systems) Thanks for watching and commenting from Germany. Cheers, Ken
Great trip. I never thought of a seep. What kind of bikes were the two of you riding? I have not rode a bike since I was a kid. Looks like fun. The wife nd I are going to do some RVing along with my Bushcrat camping and a bike could be fun. See you this spring.
+james green Thanks James. The seep worked great. I'm riding a Scott Aspect 750; no't know what Darby rode. We had a blast! Looking forward to the meetup. ...ken
+Hike with Mike Thanks. We had a blast. The bike I uses was a Scott Aspect 750. This is my first quality mountain bike. Previous bike was from a box store.... the new bike was much better.... it was easy to navigate the narrow, rocky trails. ATB, Ken
I always enjoy your videos. Seeing places I will never be able to see, learning something new and just being fun to watch. I am trying to edit some videos which I have not done in a while. I can not get Windows Movie Maker to work and from what I have read it is not capatible with Windows 10 but I can't get it to work any more on Vista either. I am curious if you can tell me with video editing software you use? I enjoy how you put yours together.
+P Shadwick I heard if you lay a wooden spoon across a boiling pot/cup that it won't boil over. I haven't tried it yet but plan to. Plan to try a wooden stick also.
I would love to do that but am paranoid about rattlers and tarp camping on the ground. I hear some people say rattlers will come snuggle up with you like a warm rock to keep warm.Any advise regarding that?
+BrownBessOwner Good question. Most snakes, including rattlers, try to avoid people. They recognize that people are too large to be prey. They only strike if they feel threatened. Therefore it is import to be careful to not step on them or reach into grass, that you cannot see, where rattlers might be riding. I suggest sleeping in a tent, so that snakes and other creepy crawlers can not enter, if you are concerned... Hope this helps. ...ken
Great video ken, bike/tarp set up looked very handy, quick question when you was collecting that grass would there not be a chance of a snake being in the grass, I live in the UK so we don't get dry grass much 😆but didn't know what the potential for snakes in that area,as always thanks for taking us along, cheers craig
+Craig Twiner Yes, there is a chance that snakes are inthe grass. However, I checked they area thoroughly before collecting gross and I could see the ground because the grass with thin. There was a greater possibility that ticks were in the grass than snakes..... and as it turned out, I did receive a tick bite on this trip. I don't know where I contacted the tick, but it might have been when I was collecting the grass. I was wearing tick repellent on my clothing and tick repelling was on my ground cloth.... but apparently that wasn't enough.
That's a good idea putting your hammock close to the ground. I would imagine you don't get a lot of cold air glow under the hammock. I'll have to give that a try.
+Kris Nordberg Yes. I prefer ground hammocks for several reasons. However, were there is underbrush I need to hand it hem traditionally. Thanks for watching and commenting. ...ken
Hi Kenneth, thanks for another great video! I was wondering what state your home base is? Some video looks like Florida, and this is Texas. I see that the meet up coming up is in Tennessee. I guess you travel quite a bit for your camp outs?
+TheNoonie50 I live in east Texas .... which has a climate and forest similar to Flordia. Most of my campouts our in Texas, but have gone west as far as California and east as far as Tennessee. Take care, Ken
what kind of mountain bike is that? I saw this video I went straight out the same night and bought me a mountain bike. I bought a 29 inch 21 speed huffy I'm going to try to get in shape for the Meetup lol
+Survival Preacher Scott Aspect 750. Awesome that you bought a bike. My son and I are planning a bikepacking trip in two weeks. We plan to make a video, so stay tuned. ....Looking for ward to meeting at that the Meetup. ....ken
+sl9guitar Thanks. The nightlapse videos were shot with a gopro HERO 4, using their recommended frame rate and settings. Older gopros are not able to do nightlapse. 1 picture every 30 seconds all night long. The complete night-lapse for each night was about 1 minute long. I only played a few seconds of it for this video (would have been too long, especially for this already long video). ...ken
you might consider getting a differant stove or be faster unscrewing the canister. I can not see how you can release so much gas escape it would ignite.
+Tim Barton I am looking at different stoves.... and when I find one that works well, and doesn't have this problem, I' probably do a video on the topic. Take care, Ken
+KennethKramm try this, www.amazon.com/Ultralight-Camping-Outdoor-Portable-Titanium/dp/B01077AGC2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457139161&sr=8-1&keywords=bsr+stove it just takes some tec to use.
Awesome adventure Ken! When you set up your hammock on the ground do you have a sleeping pad inside your hammock or outside underneath it? Thanks for sharing your adventure with us and by the way, your daughter has good taste in socks and they suit you to a tee!
+Jacqueline Schwartz Yes, I put a self inflating sleeping made inside the hammock. If I add natural materials, such as gross of leaves, they are put underneath the ground cloth (which has been treated with insect repellent. The hammock is placed on top of the groundcloth.
+Neanderthal 62 We have locations where I could dig seeps where I live in south east Texas .... but I wouldn't drinks the water, because it it heavily contaminated with man-made chemicals that are not easily removed by filtering / boiling. I live in an area that was a swamp 50 years ago and used as a chemical dump. So seeing a sump with water that appeared "clean" was a pleasant surprise.
What an awesome adventure! Always learning new things from you. Thank you.

+P Chadwick Thanks for watching and commenting. I use a Mac with Final Cut Pro X software. Will test the wooden spoon idea... Hope it works .... ken
Nice video :)
+Living Survival Thanks!
Nice video, nice camp :) what animals might go for your food ?
In situations where I have hungry, I've eaten any animal I can easily captures, from insects to mice/rats.
Hehe, sorry my poor english. I meant, what kind of animals would try to take your food ? Since hanging it up in a tree. Bears ?
Thanks for watching and commenting. ...ken
cool video.
Was there at least water available for filtering like creeks or ponds?
Thats looks fun
+David Goodridge We had a blast David
Great job brother! Just got my bike out of the shop today.......are you ready to go again?....lol
+RiverBendSurvival Thanks Darby. Yes, in two weeks Jonathan and I will go backpacking in the Sam Houston National Forest. Can't wait ....ken
cool video ken:)
+40belowful Thanks!
are you going to have any larger organized bike packing trips in Texas ? If so I'd be very interested
+ZombieGunslingr None are planed .... but stay tuned for adventure....
We plan to make a video, so stay tuned. ....Looking for ward to meeting at that the Meetup. ....ken
Looks like the top off an oil bath breather.
varmints, I'm from the uk but I remember an old cowboy film where he said 'I reckon I will always be a going to see the varmint'
Thanks for sharing Ken, that was a really nice area. What model is your bike?
+Yann Kitson Thanks Yann. Scott Aspect 750.
Great vid! Those timelapse are shot with a gopro? What kind of processing do you do to get the stars to show up?
+sl9guitar Thanks. The nightlapse videos were shot with a gopro HERO 4, using their recommended frame rate and settings. Older gopros are not able to do nightlapse. 1 picture every 30 seconds all night long. The complete night-lapse for each night was about 1 minute long. I only played a few seconds of it for this video (would have been too long, especially for this already long video). ...ken
Very good. I have the Hero 3 so I was wondering how I missed this feature. Thanks again!
I believe the item you picked up in the house was an corroborator air filter cover.
you might consider getting a differant stove or be faster unscrewing the canister. I can not see how you can release so much gas escape it would ignite.
+Tim Barton I am looking at different stoves.... and when I find one that works well, and doesn't have this problem, I' probably do a video on the topic. Take care, Ken
+KennethKramm try this, www.amazon.com/Ultralight-Camping-Outdoor-Portable-Titanium/dp/B01077AGC2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457139161&sr=8-1&keywords=bsr+stove
it just takes some tec to use.
great video ken. your a mellow fellow. did you fellows have a fire at night?
+Chris Stone Thanks Chris. We had a very small fire, but went to bed soon after dark. ...ken
The hammock is placed on top of the groundcloth.
excellent
You looked and sounded surprised that the gypsy well actually works, atb, Paul.
