I only know about loan repayments within the UK. They have a standard earning amount that you must reach before you start repaying the loan back. I believe you only need to start repayments if you earn above £24,000 / year. If you're employed, then the money is just deducted from your salary. If you're self-employed, then you need to provide evidence for your earning amount and the repayments are calculated and you need to pay directly to Student Loans. You do not need to pay any repayments if you're earning below the threshold (£24,000).
It's difficult for me to give specific advice on health informatics in particular as I haven't personally done it, but I assume that yes, it will. However there are many other factors to consider and this isn't the only thing that can determine how easy it is to get into the health-tech field. It might help to speak to the university or institute that offers this degree, they will know more than I do about this specific route. :)
