17:08 Without spoiling anything, in the original game both those songs are separate with Jaldabaoth being the boss theme while Our Beginning is played during a big story moment not long after the fight ends.
I'm surprised it was described to you as "Teenagers and a cat fight a skyscraper". Technically accurate, but the meme I always see is, "The Devil shoots God in the face to save Christmas." There is in fact dialogue during Our Beginning and the way it lines up with the song is incredible. I'm not gonna try to convince you to play Persona, but I do think you have a slight misconception that should be cleared up. Persona also has the same Pokemon element as SMT. The demons you're used to seeing like Mandrake and Pixie are in Persona, they're just called personas instead of demons, and instead of being fully external entities, they're more internal. Think like a Stand from JoJo if you're familiar with that.

It's so interesting just how contextual game music can be. This is definitely one of those tracks where if I personally heard it, I'd probably raise an eyebrow and say to myself 'wtf is this?' Another song that'd do that for me, and I'm probably gonna catch holy hell for this, is Rivers In A Desert from this same OST. Today, being almost 7 years away from my initial playthrough of P5, that song does next to NOTHING for me, but at the time when I was playing it, it gave me CHILLS. The same applies for Our Beginning. I would even go so far as to call it a very "midi" song, where the brass sounds kind of cheap, like a patch in a DAW, but to someone with the context, this track is EVERYTHING. I'm kind of sad they were requested because I feel songs like these should be reserved FOR those big moments, so that they hit properly the way they were intended. To this day you ask me my favorite game and before I can even think I hear the overworld theme from LTTP
I remember back in one of your previous Persona reactions, you asked what song in the soundtrack was the most intense, and Jaldaboath was where my mind jumped. It's the final boss of Vanilla P5(Before P5 Royal), and Jaldaboath plays during the fight itself. It's definitely a little grating, and you're right in that the context for it matters. Hearing it on repeat while you're trying to finish a rather difficult fight, it grows on you. I don't want to say too much for potential spoilers, but it is a very good fit. You're almost right on the money for Our Beginning - not necessarily the post-fight, but its the song that plays at the climax, where the protagonist gets to do his super cool thing to beat the big bad. It's cinematic, and very impactful. The mash up kind of put them together one right after the other, but in game, when it begins it's at a super cool moment, after it's been dead silent for a few minutes. It makes it hit all the harder.
Just hearing the short melody from 8:12 - 8:18 made me teary eyed and i don't even remember why it makes me teary eyed. Ya, having context and associating melodies with things is pretty good.
First song is played in a hard fought, but ultimately losing battle. Second is played in a final hard turn in your favour. Its like being down and out before seeing backup arrive on the horizon. This is why you hear that triumphant version of the chorus. In contrast, in the second song, after youre feeling triumphant, you hear that original hard guitar chorus, but its only one bar worth, its like your triumphant version is overpowering their version by both mirroring it and drowning it out.
Yeah tbh as someone who loves this long idk that I'd call it iconic. In the context of P5 it was such a breath of fresh air though, compositionally it's pretty straightforward and just FUCKS man. Like let's drop the pomp a little and just brawl it out against impossible odds
Yeah, its just one of those tracks that is elevated by its context rather than being a great standalone song. the scenes they play in are choreographed phenomenally with whats going on
Like Persona 3, the repetition enhances it *in context.* Like how in Persona 3's final fight, the boss repeats the same line at the start of every new phase, followed by a new reading of the arcana (tarot) from the game. The song's great, but on its own it feels weaker than other songs because it's not meant to be separate.
The thing about Persona 3-5's music is that you get very contemporary, stylish, music for most of the game (hip-hop in 3, J-pop in 4, jazz in 5) to represent the modern settings of the game and the feel of the main characters. However, when the games start throwing otherworldly existential threats at you, you start to hear a lot more in the way of metal. This track in particular is one of those times, as the demonic threat you're facing is absolutely overwhelming.
Nah Jesse, I'm with you on this one, Jaldabaoth as a track has always been a "yeah i guess it's there". Our beginning I actually genuinely enjoy, but the main boss theme I've never been big on. Honestly I found the P5 spinoff Strikers final boss theme more enjoyable lol. Also the discussion at the end of just not having the game appeal to you is fully understandable, I love the super robot wars OST and the franchises in it, I just wont play them because im not a strategy game guy.
I understand completely and that moment you said "This is what I wanted to hear all this time", that's exactly how I felt about that song at first lmao
Love catching up on your SMT vods. I feel like they don't make enough good RPGs for people who can't dedicate all their time to gaming. Vengence really scratched that itch for me. Evil sexy pokemon for tired dads.

Woah, just yesterday I was thinking it had been a long while since you posted a Persona 5 video! I even rewatched your video on P5T Quite Storm! And what else? I also thought about how Yaldabaoth's theme is underrated... this is legit kinda trippy not gonna lie XD EDIT: I didn't think much of this theme when I first heard it, but much later I realized I kept getting it stuck in my head. Especially the grungy part believe it or not! I then listened to a remix from SixteenInMono and grew to love it and the original
I always felt this song was a poor follow up to Rivers in the Desert, which played in the previous boss fight, and Jaldabaoth being the final boss theme By no means a bad piece, but previous entries always followed up the big, climatic boss tracks in a striking way. Lotus Juice's rendition of Burn my Dread being a punch in the face immediately following up the more contemplative Battle for Everyone's Souls; and The Almighty and Genesis also contrasting fairly well imo, with an uneasy, slow build up into a relieving catharsis I think a big issue is the context before the fight. The lead up to it is framed as a victory lap style "WE'RE BACK MOTHUFUCKA" sequence, and it plays off kinda weird being so grungy The transition to Our Beginning is definitely the highlight, but Jaldabaoth is what you're hearing for a good 10 to 20 minutes prior, depending on difficulty. Its a 7 outta 10 track in a series full of 9's and 11's
I really don't even remember this song, but it starts off so good and just becomes background music-so the moment, which is very cool and anime-must really elevate it in the moment. As far as boss themes, I just played Like A Dragon Gaiden and the final boss theme, Deadly Struggle, is among the top of many great boss themes in that series. Unwavering Belief is still kind though, IMO.
I'm sure a lot of comment have said this, but pretty much "Jaldaboath" is the entire boss theme, while "Our Beginning" is the ending song that plays after you've beaten said boss. Also I'm hoping you'll take a listen to "Prison Labor" also from Persona 5 Royal, it's one of my favorite songs from the game and very underappreciated.
I remember when I first heard this I honestly despised it....I think it might have been cos I was attached so much to Battle for everyones souls from P3 and The Almighty from P4 and I expected this to live up to those? Nowadays I've came round to it a lot more, I still think it pales in comparison to the previous final boss themes but it ain't bad.
Wow, im surprised to see the dislike for this song. Like, it's not my favorite Persona boss battle theme, but I dig it and after playing some SMT, it definitely gives off more SMT vibes which I guess is appropriate considering what Yaldabaoth is. The P5 Royal final boss theme tho, that's fire.
Jaldabaoth is...definitely by far the weakest battle theme in p5 and personally all around one of the weakest tracks in the whole soundtrack (our beginning is a different story-in and out of context,I think). Dont get me wrong, its decent, but its also comparibly incredibly weak compared to the 2 final boss themes that came before it. (i cant speak on p1 and 2)
Most people who played or tried both series would say otherwise. Yes they share some similarities with the persona/demon designs and both having turn based combat but they have different themes, settings, presentation styles and pacing. In SMT the gameplay loop is also way more focused on exploration and combat, whereas in Persona you have the calendar system with school and social links to provide cooldown periods between the dungeons with a lot more dialogue.
This isnt me trying to convince you to play at all. I get your point and i was exactly like you. Persona didnt appeal to me at all for a very long time and eventually i heard ONE song and from that point on, I had to get my hands on persona 3 i really did love the game afterwards but you are correct, there is a lot of dialogue in persona games 100 percent i can say with certainty as a persona fanboy myself now. Maybe one day you will play it really who knows but i hope to see more of the incredible songs from the games on the channel!
Persona is also LONG - P5 Royal is at minimum 90+ hours for a first run, and that puts a lot of people off. I loved every second of it, but not everyone will and that's OK. I would honestly much more strongly recommend Metaphor ReFantazio. It's lengthy as well, but the entire game is voiced over and it basically has the best elements of SMT and Persona in a more streamlined manner. I will say however, the soundtrack isn't as varied or memorable so that's probably a deal breaker for our boi.
Might be a hot take but even as someone with the full context of the game, and who experienced this song first through the game itself, I always found this to be an extremely weak boss song *especially* for this particular boss. P5 has a few other sub-boss themes and even just the regular boss theme earlier on in the game that in my opinion are far better than this one, so I fully understand you feeling underwhelmed by this.
I actually agree on Yaldabaoth. Our Beginning is nice! On par with P4’s final boss theme to me, though that one is a much different tone and a LOT slower. But Yald? It just… it has a very distorted start followed by an epic guitar riff, then loop. It just feels… lacking. It fits the moment, but I can’t help but feel it’s the weakest fight theme in the game, arguably one of if not the weakest songs in the game even.
Some other people have echoed the sentiment in the comments but: Jaldabaoth is by persona standards,a VERY weak track for what it specifically is,especially the 2 that came before it in the same spots are just better. I love the persona 5 soundtrack, but Jaldabaoth is basically bottom tier for that soundtrack overall, its one of the few tracks in the whole soundtrack I just cant see myself listening to without just skipping over it. Tacking on a little fun fact since Persona is technically part of the greater shin megami series: The shin megami series is generally considered as the Originator of the monster taming genre, predating pokemon by about 9 years. The genre just didnt make it out of japan much until pokemon because especially for shin megami, there was that whole satanic panic going on back then.
I would regard Jaldabaoth to be the weakest final boss theme in Persona (which isn't to say its bad). But "Throw Away Your Mask" (P5R), "The Almighty" (P4), and "Mist" (P4) eclipse it for me.
I'm not that big of a Persona 5's music (Or the game in general) and I'll concede that as simply different tastes and that it's not for me. Jaldabaoth is a truly awful final battle theme though, no two ways about it 😂
i think this song is awesome cause ur literally fighting the god of demise or something and ur surrounded in the clouds and also like ur in hell it’s awesome
@@stfu_b4and0nnot you 🤣🤣 you are saying you like the song while giving context as to why you like song, I like the song as well bc I played the game. Jesse is saying that he does not have context meaning he is not as crazy about it
Well...THIS song in particular, comes near the end of the game and you've heard P5, not all of it, but you heard it, Yes, unlike "Demons, Humans and..." this song is MEANT to be Jarring upfront. "Our Beginning" as you guessed, is the "Conclusion" hence it's also why it sounds more "familiar " than the Jaldabaoth.
This is the worst boss theme in this game. Even though It works better in context. And its not bad. Rivers in the Desert was the last boss song you hear before this one so its kind of a let down
Yeah, i dunno. I dont think this song could be considered iconic. IMO its the weakest of the final boss songs from modern persona and a very generic song in my opinion, heavily carried by the leimotif from The Stars and Us, a genuinely good song. Certainly not a bad song, but not memorable or iconic. Even Blooming Villain is more iconic imo.
I'll be honest. I've been playing Persona games for years. Loved the music for most of it. Jaldabaoth is the one track I do not like at all. Even in context, because going all the way back to when I first played Persona 5 on my PS3 when I got to the boss it plays for, it gave me whiplash. It clashed with everything the game had taught me to expect from the music in ways that were grating and jarring. I remember sitting there for a moment stunned and then, going into the fight and cutting it super close because I was trying to rush through it to get past the song. A lot of people like this piece, I'm guessing for thematic reasons, but it's always a pass for me.

"Fake News" *pulls even bigger revolver*
"The other edgy self comes out at the end to bring out the biggest revolver" at the end of Our Beginning.

Yessir
HELLL YEAAA
Yes~
*context
@@dediualex3554 No bro I don’t need context I played the game thank u tho
@@stfu_b4and0nnot you 🤣🤣 you are saying you like the song while giving context as to why you like song, I like the song as well bc I played the game. Jesse is saying that he does not have context meaning he is not as crazy about it
17:42 😂 maybe in 2035 if you still play video games by then 😂 Gon have to play all of P5(100+ hrs) for that.
Rivers in the Desert was the last boss song you hear before this one so its kind of a let down
Then they picked it up with throw your mask away
THROW YOUR MASK AWAY.... rahhhh
It’s pronounced yaldaboth
Explain yourself HERETIC y no p5 gameplay un Channel!?(I'm kidding, I'm just waiting for SMT V Vengeance proper)
Throw your mask away is far more impactfull of a boss theme
It's Yaldoboath-
just saying-
I'll be honest.
I have a few P5R songs I want you to react to: "Gentle Madman", "Keep Your Faith", and "Throw Away Your Mask". Good songs there.
Yea peak sona music
P5 songs are so overrated, they're good only if you're playing the game, not listening casually. p3 and p4 are much better in my opinion.
Does he not realise persona is smt but with a group?
Smt and persona are very different fundamentally
