    - To build Marble Machine X we start by revisiting the first machine and taking some measurements. Karin, Olof and Marius are helping me out and they are working on the first CAD model of the Machine in Fusion 360 and these measurements is our starting point.
    I have created a open idea photo sharing page where you can share your sketches with ideas for the Marble Machine X here:
    bit.ly/2ljPoOQ
    Looking forward to seeing your ideas!
    All the best and have a nice day everyone,
    /Martin
    Video Made by Martin Molin & Hannes Trainerds Knutsson
    If you want to support:
    The fact that you are watching the videos and care about the music and future of Wintergatan is the best support anyone can have, I want to thank everyone who is here for that kind of support, it is really the fuel for the Wintergatan Engine.
    Why do we accept support in this way?
    I, Martin, can already sustain myself 100% doing what I love to do. If you want to support artists/organisations who have not yet reached that privileged position, please consider supporting other artists/organisations who need the support more. With that said, I have too many ideas and too little time and with your support I can get more help from people around me to execute the ideas better and bring them out in the world faster.

    I kinda liked the wooden gears sound in the first machine, it was a part of the song for me.

    • @Nerdule
      @Nerdule 7 лет назад +134

      The thing was, the original sound was *extremely loud*, actually louder than the music. They were able to get the actual music by putting very focused pickup microphones on the individual instruments and doing a lot of post-processing to get the levels and sounds right; the actual sound of the machine you would hear if you were standing next to it would mostly be *[GEAR NOISES INTENSIFY]*

    • @steveskouson9620
      @steveskouson9620 7 лет назад +25

      I can see where the sound of the mechanism
      may interfere, but in my opinion, some NEEDS
      to be there.
      Tubes on the Vibraphone would be awesome,
      since I REALLY like the sound effect of a
      Leslie speaker. (Which is a very similar device.)

      @dioune32 7 лет назад +38

      Don't worry, mechanical sounds will still be there, just like you hear buttons on an accordion or the bow on a violin, it just won't be as loud as before.

    • @MorfsPrower
      @MorfsPrower 7 лет назад +14

      Well honestly a physical noise is different than one made synthetically. As close as they can be, an instrument just has more personality, because the sound is tailored by the instrument itself.

    • @shadowfire04
      @shadowfire04 7 лет назад +37

      but if you actually listened to the marble machine, the gears were so loud it'd just mostly be *[CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK]* instead of music. martin had to do a shitload of post-processing and carefully placed mikes to get the music.

    • @ballinhamster3170
      @ballinhamster3170 7 лет назад +20

      If you were there in person, you would probably agree they should be toned down quite a bit. Like others have said, most of the sounds were taken out and processed individually so you could actually hear the vibraphone. Perfectly cut gears will also just plain work better, and hopefully lead to fewer malfunctions.

    i love the 1st marble machine, why?
    it looks and made by someone really enthusiastic about what he loves, sure it isn't perfect ,looks like it is made in his garage,by using a lot of part that looks like taken and scraped from anywhere he could find ,it's extremely rough around the edges ,
    but damn that is this machine's charm , it doesn't look good,but it works, sure it isn't efficient but it really does gets the job done and that is the most important part, and that is the part that make anyone proud, and that alone is already worth all the work ,pain, struggle ,time.
    it is brimming with potential, brimming with personality and passion of the one who builds it,it clearly shows all the sweat,care,love,tears and effort were put into it .
    and most importantly, seeing marble machine,reminded me of myself and what i wanted to be in the future, something that i wanted to achieve,doing or making something that makes me feels independent, making something that's respected and appreciated by everyone.
    thank you for creating marble machine, it gave me inspiration and a new outlook for my life.

      Wintergatan, don't worry about wasting our time, it's our choice how we waste it. Just keep producing art. You, by your nature and passion will find it almost impossible to produce "waffleing" videos or bad art.
      I have a feeling this "you" should include the folks traveling with you (singular :) on this adventure. The inspiration generated here is fantastic and the art, phenomenal.
      A tip on making good videos, even though yours involve sound heavily,. review the video without sound. Does it still "make sense"? Does it still flow? This tends to show the random unconscious movements that distract from what you're trying to say.

    @phelixmu4609 7 лет назад

    As both a woodworker and an audiophile, I applaud this kind of creative intersection between engineering/design and music. I find the visual aspect to watching these devices make music to greatly enhance the appreciation of what goes into making the music itself. For many non-musicians, the process of creating music can be quite opaque and hard to imagine being involved in, but seeing these interesting machines produce such sophisticated music makes it tangible and relatable in a way that is very enjoyable.
    I am reminded of a large-scale display at the Museum of Science in Boston that I saw as a child that used a variety of simple machines and had a musical element involved, still a nice memory decades later. Thanks for these creations, and I hope your future work goes well.

    On the marble catcher, easier, but more importantly most reliable would be my recommended priority. When you are on the road and the machine is getting the snot pounded out of it you are going to want it to be as reliable as possible. I would recommend a single marble catcher, but have it be clear so you can see the marbles going in and bouncing around before they get directed to the out tube.

    • @simplylinn
      @simplylinn 7 лет назад +8

      Actually, a single catcher with walls and compartments that could be a good compromise. Once you've caught the marble, you could do something interesting inside the compartment, trigger a letter jump or similar, to keep the visual indication from the individual funnels, while still going with a more robust and rigid design.

    • @SirCutRy
      @SirCutRy 7 лет назад +4

      +CoderCandy Maybe having a transparent catcher where each marvle coming from a vibraphone plate has a flap (rubber, paper, something like that) facing the player in its way, which folds down when the marble goes through.

    • @SuperFrodo95
      @SuperFrodo95 7 лет назад +2

      William Hayden You could have LED lights that get triggered when a ball hits the vibrophone. Maybe optical or ultrasonic sensors that would detect the keys(?) vibrating. If it was done like that the lights would slowly dim as the vibration lessens, which would look really cool.

    • @williamhayden7711
      @williamhayden7711 7 лет назад +4

      SuperFrodo95 The options are literally endless, but the more added to the machine the more complex it becomes and this machine ultimately needs to be as simple as possible. Simplicity directly translates to reliability. Remember this machine will be taken apart, packed, moved, unpacked and reassembled countless times by people that aren't necessarily delicate in their actions due to time and stress.

    • @willmorr
      @willmorr 7 лет назад +7

    I was just watching the Marble Machine music video and was reminded about your question of funnels for the vibraphone. I say, use both, have individual funnels for each note, but also make a catch that is lower and will catch any marbles that miss the first funnels. You will get the visualization that you are looking for and also keep all the marbles contained.

    As a coaster replacement would another type of coaster work?
    the semi hard fiber/cellulose like coasters you see at bar's/pub's for glasses. You can get personalized ones with art on them, might add some interesting flair to the machine.

    If only I could subscribe to this channel again! absolutely love the engineering going into making this kind of music. Wish I could help but building sets and performing in shows is taking enough time already. Maybe I'll sketch something in my tea breaks!

It really inspires me, and I feel very good following your work, and having the opportunity to see at least little bit of what your amazing mind can create. It really inspires me, and gets me happy. Really, thank you for all that you've done, it's really great to see it all.
    Cheers from Brazil!
