In this video im unboxing two fantastic packages from Marius and Tobias, and experimenting with the movements of the 3D printed drums for the Marble Machine X. I forgot to mention in the video that we will paint these drums!
I have recieved alot of emails and comments about the ball joint and that it will gets loose from the marbles continuously hitting the drums. Even when i tighten the ball joint screw lightly i cant move it with my hands when trying. The plastic will break before the joint moves. There is so much friction in the rubbery ABS plastic so when properely tightened down, the joint doesnt move at all.
At this stage in the project im focusing much more on the mechanical aspects - how the drums will move and how to mount them to the machine and so on - and less on the sound. I know that once we have the mechanics figured out i can work on updating the prints to develop and improve the sound alot. Even though i have a long list of changes for the next generation prints, i do feel that the 3D print route on this is a success already.
If you are buidling something similar i would recommend Black Organic Italian Rice for any 3D printed drums as the black rice has more brilliance in the high-mid frequencies than Jasmine or Basmati.
OK have a nice evening out there everyone! / Martin

Thanks to www.CNCRouterparts.com and www.Matterhackers.com for providing the CNC Machine and the 3D Printer for the Marble Machine X Project!
I forgot to mention that we will of course paint these drums!
I have recieved a couple of emails and comments about the ball joint and that it will gets loose from the marbles continuously hitting the drums. Even when i tighten the ball joint screw lightly i cant move it with my hands when trying. The plastic will break before the joint moves. There is so much friction in the rubbery ABS plastic so when properely tightened down, the joint doesnt move at all.
I did delete this comment and all the answers by mistake once before, before i had read all the answers! I cant find a way of undeleting, so stupid mistake!
Can't wait! :DDDDDDDDDDDD
wintergartan you could also just use colored filament to print the drums there are even fluorescent and more special filaments
Wintergatan congratulations on 500K subscribers!
Concerning ball joints, there is an American company specializing in those mainly used for GPS brackets, the company is RAM Mounts ( www.rammount.com ) and they use rubber balls, and tons of accessories. They can handle A LOT of stress, but they are not cheap though, but there are companies making knockoffs with more or less success.
You could try to build your own rubber ball joint system though.
are the Stl Files for the 3D printed drums publicly available or are they proprietary? id like to make some for my own testing. have you considered having the parts printed in metal. for metalic sounds?
Is it only me or are their videos getting cooler and cooler with every single video?
Rudronil Nath nope
general kitten agreed, every video is as cool as it possibly can be already
nope.
I am blown away by your music and engineering ability. Genius
'In the video _How to hit bass strings with marbles_ ...'
O..K , so like what category is that trending in ?
Is there a newsgroup or something .. alt.bassmarbles ?
Did you try any of the shops for prefabricated components like BallBasser or National Marble Music ? They're down in the KeepsieTwang _district_ .
And yet there are people saying that 3D printing is just a fad. Awesome stuff!
Martin, let me know when you have more 3D printing request!
People said television and internet were fads too.
I don't even know if I'm here for music or the engineering anymore but either way I'm never disappointed. Great job and keep it up, can't wait to see the finished product.
Why not both?
Good music is engineered and given a credit in the liner notes.
The journey we've been through... truly amazing
And we’re still going! Thanks go out to youtube for putting this video in recommended, it makes me appreciate it even more
Still going. In theory ;-)
woooooow WINTERGATAN brings engineering, synth and techno music to a whole new level.
!!!!!!!GOD LEVEL!!!!!!
YAy
also I am a mechanical engineer but "Lord Martin" inspired me to start my own multi genre Music channel called....... piyukulk...
from the bottom of my heart thank you !!!WINTERGATAN!!!!
Wintergatan i may only be in 7th grade, but i love your work, technnology, awesome music with you and your band, anyway im going to go to college to become a mechanical, or chemical engineer. Truly fascinated by your work 👍🏼👍🏼
I totally agree! Martin, you are a genius! Thank you for sharing your musical and engineering explorations. So cool +Wintergatan
Synth?! Where are those Synths?!
Damn, now I have to wait another week for the next video... This is honestly so exciting to watch
0:41 For a moment i thought he was going to sing. The "One is from" was on POINT!
Ahahaha xD True!!!
Heh, you're right! The "Marius" fits quite well too.
What if you suspended the drum like how a studio mic is suspended, a double elastic system.
The hard stop may produced a double hit, hopefully getting the tensions right on the elastic can counteract the resonance of the bounce/wobble, if you use the mic suspension idea then maybe having one set of elastic tighter than the other would help..
Youre absolutely right about the double hit! Im going to take your idea about one side having harder tension with me when i design the new hanging, thanks alot!
The lower should be stronger.
Sparky Projects THIS MAN WILL BE HONORED FOREVER
use a piece of cork or felt to deaden the double hit.
Yeah, I was hearing that too, you want a single impact on the drum, not a flam. Good idea, SparkyProjects
Yay! It's Wintergatan Wednesday! I've been waiting all week for this! I love the 3D printed parts. Maybe you ought to use finger cymbals for the hi-hat.
-"Good day!"
-"Good day!"
-"I'd like to buy some rice."
-"Very well, what kind, sir?"
-"What do you have that makes a good snare sound?"
-"???"
tip from the coach. don't boil the rice ...
Yeah, and I'm sorry, I'm not much better haha! Hopeless case, the doctors cried ... :D
I love the fact that he explains how the drums in Animusic move when they are hit. It such a childhood memory. Thank you Wintergatan for bringing this idea of music to life. Good luck on Marble Machine X ; )
Martin, 4 years in the future: "Yea, just slap an full snare and hi-hat on it lmao"
Great video as usual, I love watching this journey!
Thanks, it is a Journey! I have a goal of beeing almost finished end of august. But when i built the first machine i said it was going to take two month and it took 16 so i wouldnt put too much importance on my end of august guess.
//// godspeed ////
Look at this, then look at where we are now. It's incredible
The first video I saw from this series. It's unbelievable that it's been 2 years and I still watch these and see your channel grow, making better and better videos. Can't wait hearing the MMX playing music in it's full glory.
If you knew what you did in 2019....
Rice in the Hi-Hat is not an option!
I just love this combination of vlog & music & how-to & science (trying to repeatedly hit the drums just the way you like it).
I always look forward to Wednesdays for these videos, really great stuff Martin!
Thanks! It means alot to hear!
I stumbled across the marble machine video some time ago. I loved the tune and the contraption instantly. I'm so glad I get to see the process of you making it.
I'm so happy that i subscribed after i saw the Marble machine video!
I'm so happy with the direction your going with your new Marble Machine and love all the work you do. I'm happy to have stuck around and watch all your inspiring videos as you escapade along with your new ideas. Keep it up at your own pace and in the meantime I'll be waiting anxiously for your next video!
Once I figured out that you could play Billie Jean by tuning the two lowest strings down to low A and Low D, then putting a capo on the second fret. You can play the entire groove with a wonderful economy of motion, hand in first position. You do have to do it on an acoustic with heavier strings to get away with tuning it that low.
This is so amazing, like how much you can make small instrument sound so well with the mic and audio processing, i never know about it, CAN'T wait for Marble Machine X !!
If the drums move around, and you drop two marbles with short interval, won't it bounce uncontrollably? because the drums wouldn't have enough time to go back to the original place before the second marble hits. The drum will have different positions.
Fantastic videos, everything I love about RUclips, great music, cad, cam, cnc, 3D printing all in one. Many talented guy
Your various skills REALLY impress me (for what it is worth).
Just wow your genius and persistence for this machine and general engineering is on another level and I can see the 3D printed drums become a huge thing in the near future
Wintergatan, you never cease to amaze me
dude, your my freaking hero. you create amazing things with basic resources, your one of the few people to inspire me and to push me to keep going!
Marble Marchine X will be INSANE. #BestVideoOnRUclips
Martin Molin should be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. or be knighted by the queen.
Indeed, it feels like we are all along with you on your journey! It is very exciting to watch it all unfold, in real time!
You and the rest of the Wintergatan crew are a huge blessing!
0:25 Whaaat - he was playing the melody and the chords at the same time?! That's insane :D
jjwood1600 lots of ska punk and art punk bassists end up having to do that.
Oh wow! Never knew that!
jjwood1600 ya, it's really really unpleasant to learn but once you've figured it out it's incredibly rewarding.
Yeah, I can imagine!
fun you noticed, its like Ancala Bond writes further down, once its in the muscle memory its not hard, rewarding indeed! I have no clue how i ended up playing Billie Jean though, or even guitar in this video, i think it was the simplest drumbeat i could imagine to showcase the drums.
I'm really enjoying these videos about the new marble machine. As a drummer myself I thought that the printed drums were going to be a little bit bigger.
I really look forward to seeing the evolution of the project.
This is so awesome, I started to learning Fusion 360 right away after seeing your previous video :D Have you thought of using metallic springs tuned inside the hihat to create slow decay effect to its vibrations? That might be used in addition to the rice to get 3 staged sound with attack, sustain and decay.
I already felt inadequate and then after I watched this video, I felt totally and completely useless all together. Thank God there are people like this in the world who use their genius to entertain all of us lazy drones. These are the true celebrities. I would stand in line for days to meet one of these awesome creators.
The sound of the music kind of remind me Michael Jacksons' Billy Jean. Great Project Wintergatan!
Luis Rodríguez Full disclosure: that was Billy Jean :)
I remember reading about 3D printing back when I was in engineering school at the University of Missouri - Rolla (now Missouri School of Science and Technology) and thought it would be a major game changer in the world when the technology was perfected... Very nice work! I enjoyed the first marble machine and am following your work on the second one. I wish you all of the success in the world.
Who else started singing Michael Jackson's Billy Jean at 0:16? :P
Same!
She was more like a beauty queen from a movie scene♬
same
Wasn't singing but recognized the song............name that 'tune' is fun !
I wanted to!
yes
Very excited to see the development of the Marble Machine X! It's really cool being able to watch the process of designing and building it.
Man this is way cool to see you build this , thank you for sharing :) . SKK .
Part of the charm of the original machine was how crude it was. I hope the precision gained from the more sophisticated design outweighs the wonderment of the original.
another great background track, as like the track in the video of disassembling the first machine... will this track be on one of the two new albums?
I can't wait for his next project. I loved the marble machine and the music that it produced. Keep up the hard work and talent!
why does the sign say vintergatan though?
swedish :)
+carlmnssn The (very shortly used) original name of the band when it started.
cool, the more you know!
Another swedish band contacted us when we put out the first Sommarfågel video and asked us to change because they were calling themselves Vintergatan, we changed to Wintergatan. Some day i will make a plywood "W" to go with the sign...
In older swedish spellings, words that started with "V" was always spelled with "W" so once upon a time it was correct swedish aswell!
Now that I know how all these parts end up it's very funny watching these early videos. It's so sad watching this knowing that all this work gets scrapped!! I'm glad you had all this work as learning moments though. It's inspiring to see you work through the redesign process, I usually give up whenever some of my initial ideas for a project don't work as well as I want.
Your German was not so bad.
"Wirtschaft" was perfect
Happy to hear altough it was sheer luck
Chris I love how he sais “Gesellschaft“ :D
you mean cheselschaft
heselhaft
500K Subscribers, congratulations! You guys have totally earnt it, pure brilliance. Inspirational
don't you think it's a little pity that the MMX depends on audio processing and therewith electricity?
they can still change the drums and have them sound good without processing or maybe even without mics
He said he's going to mechanically+materially tune the drums. The audio processing was just for this video. At least the degree of it
The original marble machine was no different. The bass and the drums would both be too quiet without some form of amplification. In the original video you can see the audio equipment attached to the machine at some points. Many of the cooler instruments used by Wintergatan depend on audio processing, for example the Modulin
Actually that is the first part of the MMX which I really don't like. I would much prefer some proper wood and metal parts, which would sound much more like real deal, then some plastic peaces. But may be I am wrong. Many people here seem to like it and Martin did pointed out that at the moment he is not looking for the best sound but the mechanics. The ideas for the mechanical and visual effects I do like.
Can't wait for the whole new Marble Machine! I loved the last one, and I'm sure this will be amazing too!
Dear Martin
I am incredibly excited for MMX, but I have some concerns. One of the reasons that I loved the original marble machine was because you made it by hand, which somehow made it so much cooler. And one of the things that I'm kinda worried about is that with the MMX from what little I've seen of it, with all these 3D printed parts its kinda starting to look like you've assembled it from a kit, which causes it to loose its magic a bit. Anyway super excited to see what you do next.
ok, everything about this project is pretty cool but the absolute most brilliant thing is that he has a massive rock wall in his basement/garage/workshop! The damn mountain passes through his house. Nice.
We love your voice please don't replace it with that computer voice! :)
You are so talented, loved you playing the guitar. And the piano in the boat, also. I loved these 3D printed instruments, they surely will do a good work in the marble machine.
When you make marble machine x do you think with the new song you make from it you can also do the original?
Monist Well, the coolest part about this new setup will be that basically any song can be played on it, so I guess it should still work😊 Hope this still helps you months later😅
I captivated by the content of your videos but the amount of effort put into producing a high quality and entertaining experience should not go unnoticed either.
Stupid question, but why don't you use metal for the hi hat. Make a tiny hi hat and put the mic into the hat, like a sandwich, metal mic metal. Idk just a thought
Loved the shout-out to Animusic! Really great stuff, I love these updates!
Can't wait to see even more progress on an incredibly innovative project!
Billy Jean?
sounds like it right?
that is my thought
I Am ProdAG Yeah, makes me feel old. Grew up listening to that, Floyd and much more.
Tina Abrahamson don't feel old. I'm 18 and I always go back to the originals. Back when music was written with purpose.
Yakawss yea I thought lol
Was the outro track composed just for this video or is that some of your other work? Really liked that
I'd also like to know, surprised this kind of question isn't all the way at the top of the comments. I really want to listen to it clean without the video voice over.
Michael Jackson, Billie Jean
outro music sounds like this track ruclips.net/video/GQWWGt-EckA/видео.html
I love the soundtrack playing while showing the assembly!
Road to 500k , gg :3 and , seriously , who dislike that video and for what :| ?
Yes! Passing 500 k tonight probably, overwhelming actually!
Yup. You are a genius musician, (iam french excuse my english) , you actualy inspired me , but iam so sad at the same time, cause your level is unbeatable. (I dont wanna say unbeatable, but more something like "inatteignable")
Engineer Musicians. This is why Wintergatan is amazing. Not only is your music amazing, the way you create the things to make the sounds is so creative it's inspiring!
big doubts about that ball hinge. it'll never hold a position, you'll have to reset it inbetween every song
He could always drill and peg it if he finds one or a couple of positions that work.
Even when i screw it on lightly, i cant move it even when i try. The plastic breaks before the ball hinge moves! There is so much friction and ABS is a little rubbery, softer material so it glues to eachother in the position its set in!
Unless you actually have some sort of fusing going on between the parts, I'm guessing it's moving, even if its just a tiny tiny bit.
Lets say the bearing moves 0,05mm (in relation to the clamp) with each hit, a song is 3 min long, 120bpm, and average of 1 hit with each beat.
0,05 x 3 * 120 ( * 1) = 18 mm.
That's almost 80° given that the bearing d is 2,5 cm. ( 1,8 / (2,5 * Pi) * 360 )
Even if I'm of by a factor of two, its 8°, that's not nothing when you want the ball to hit a small collector area.
It might not be noticeable after 20 hits, but I would suggest you run an endurance test.
Love your videos! Thanks for all the great music!
"...I'm guessing it's moving, even if its just a tiny tiny bit. Lets say the bearing moves 0,05mm..."
While the first part seems like a reasonable assumption, may I ask why you settled on .05mm as the amount it moves with each hit? What if instead the amount it moves is .05um? Friction locking ball joints are used all over the place in lighting, photography... hell, even on acoustic drum kits to hold things in place ( www.gibraltarhardware.com/?fa=partsdetail&curcat=2&bnd=11&cid=104&sid=465&pid=1589 )...
With precision built 3d parts you'd have nearly 100% contact between the parts, so to me it seems perfectly reasonable to assume that given enough tension it'd hold what little weight and force impacted by a marble would impart...
Like you though, I have no idea if what I _think_ is true, is actually true.. so endurance test away :)
+Edward Russell II The 0,05mm is just an example :)
As for the the hinge in a full size drum, they use rubber to absorb the energy from each hit or are made out of steel, wich can be tightend much harder than ABS. Since ABS is much more ridgid than rubber and mor brittle than steel, there is much less absorbtion of the energy in to the material, wich could move it.
Im no engineer so all of this is ofcourse speculation :)
As a mechanical engineer and musician this is so cool to see you combine them in a Rude Goldberg like contraption! Keep it going 👌
At least he's honest where he steals his ideas from. Been an Animusic fan since it started, when I saw the marble machine I was like duuuuude c'mon. Originality please.
I'm so happy you mentioned Animusic! Literally my favorite thing to watch as a kid and I thought you were inspired by that and I'm just glad to know I was right about something I really like!
jelly beans, are in my drawer.
There’s more from where all that came from
I just came from the store
Martin! My children would NEVER believe that I could possibly be listening to such a highly technical band as yours. Using 3D printed parts and instruments? I wouldn't have believed it when *I* was younger. I look forward to hearing these perform on stage and maybe one day a concert here near by in the future in the USA.
I like the stranger things-esk ending song
Did he just compose this for this video's ending? I want the full version of this in my office NOW!
Sir, you don't have a office.
TudoGamer - yes, I know =/ then I want it on my desk
Hahahah, good one!
I'm so glad that this build is at least in part Animusic- inspired. It was my favorite.
I love you thinks makke somme more
Is so thrilling to see you work on this and watch it coming to life it inspired me to create something. Keep on the awesome work !
I'm so glad Animusic was mentioned! I always wondered if the marble machine was inspired by Animusic
this amazing machine will be (and already is) a miracle of modern engineering
Love Wintergatan Wednesdays soo much and look forward to them each week on this amazing work you are doing to Marble Machine X! The first was historical and the second no doubt will be even better! Love your work!
I love how Google Translate can serve as a voice over! And those tiny drums are so cute! Especially the snaredrum, just super cute.
And I bet you've reached the 10k steps that day, if you had to place all the letters of Vintergatan against the wall!
Also awesome effects! You can see you've put a lot of work in it!
Wintergaten - keeping it eccentric and making superb music using engineering and technology. Love it.
Your videos make me want to keep watching them because they are so cool!! They get better with every video!!!
Great video! I loved hearing and seeing your work process as you tested and modified the equipment. Thanks for the updates!
Almost half a million subs! Glad your channel is getting the attention it deserves. I used to be a CAD designer for the mechanical engineering field, and I also like to collect marbles, and I like all sorts of music . . . perfect channel for my tastes =)
I love you for bringing art to science and science to art. It's a beautiful thing.
Holy crap, Animusic?? Dude, Animusic was such a bit part of my life, and it's unbelievably amazing to know that from an 8-year percussion to my favorite band ever, it's been that big of an inspiration!
I always love seeing your progress on this!
nice to see you continue on the marble machine, its really cool and different.
cant wait to see the nex generations of the machine
When you’re done the data file and the machine will be priceless! Love the progression!
Martin Molin and the music Wintergatan makes us the only reason I continue to play instruments myself. This band is very inspirational to me and I really enjoy all their content and wish them the best of luck throughout this project. :>
yet another excellent video, I am so intrigued by your entire approach at Machine X. Cant wait to see the final product, Keep up the great work!!
I think this is literally my favourite channel on RUclips at the moment. Thanks :).
I find the development process fascinating. Thanks for your in-depth video.
Oh, man!! i can't wait to see the final result of this new creation of yours. I must admit that i love the original marble machine, because it looks so "mechanical", but, in this new one, i think that it will look like so nice and beautiful, like a miniature orchestra. Keep the incredible good work, and have a lot of good vibes!!! Greetings from México!!!
the 3d printing technique is so awesome !
man i remember sitting up way past my bed time watching pbs and they showed animusic future retro and it basically blew my mind as a young kid
I think it's really cool that Wintergatan has a community helping out with Marble Machine X.
Oh man, I am pumped up for Marble Machine X. Great little update on this one, I can't wait to see next week's video!
Exponential increase in my enjoyment of Wintergatan's content withy every new video!
I love watching you experiment. That's the way to do it! Love to meet you some day.
Im so grateful that I get to see you masterpieces!
This project is unfolding very nicely.
you even used the bassline in a similar fassion in the final song, just like in Animusic. I am so looking forward for this project to be finished! And watching you on your path to your goal is a lot of fun! Well done! Editing, ingeniouity and everything.
