    In this video im unboxing two fantastic packages from Marius and Tobias, and experimenting with the movements of the 3D printed drums for the Marble Machine X. I forgot to mention in the video that we will paint these drums!
    I have recieved alot of emails and comments about the ball joint and that it will gets loose from the marbles continuously hitting the drums. Even when i tighten the ball joint screw lightly i cant move it with my hands when trying. The plastic will break before the joint moves. There is so much friction in the rubbery ABS plastic so when properely tightened down, the joint doesnt move at all.
    At this stage in the project im focusing much more on the mechanical aspects - how the drums will move and how to mount them to the machine and so on - and less on the sound. I know that once we have the mechanics figured out i can work on updating the prints to develop and improve the sound alot. Even though i have a long list of changes for the next generation prints, i do feel that the 3D print route on this is a success already.
    If you are buidling something similar i would recommend Black Organic Italian Rice for any 3D printed drums as the black rice has more brilliance in the high-mid frequencies than Jasmine or Basmati.
    OK have a nice evening out there everyone! / Martin

    If you want to support:
    The fact that you are watching the videos and care about the music and future of Wintergatan is the best support anyone can have, I want to thank everyone who is here for that kind of support, it is really the fuel for the Wintergatan Engine.
    If you apart from that further want to support the projects, we have these different options set up:

    I, Martin, can already sustain myself 100% doing what I love to do. If you want to support artists/organisations who have not yet reached that privileged position, please consider supporting other artists/organisations who need the support more. With that said, I have too many ideas and too little time and with your support I can get more help from people around me to execute the ideas better and bring them out in the world faster. I did delete this comment and all the answers by mistake once before, before i had read all the answers! I cant find a way of undeleting, so stupid mistake!

      Concerning ball joints, there is an American company specializing in those mainly used for GPS brackets, the company is RAM Mounts ( www.rammount.com ) and they use rubber balls, and tons of accessories. They can handle A LOT of stress, but they are not cheap though, but there are companies making knockoffs with more or less success.
      You could try to build your own rubber ball joint system though.

      are the Stl Files for the 3D printed drums publicly available or are they proprietary? id like to make some for my own testing. have you considered having the parts printed in metal. for metalic sounds?

    What if you suspended the drum like how a studio mic is suspended, a double elastic system.
    The hard stop may produced a double hit, hopefully getting the tensions right on the elastic can counteract the resonance of the bounce/wobble, if you use the mic suspension idea then maybe having one set of elastic tighter than the other would help..

    • @Wintergatan
      @Wintergatan  7 лет назад +77

      Youre absolutely right about the double hit! Im going to take your idea about one side having harder tension with me when i design the new hanging, thanks alot!

    Once I figured out that you could play Billie Jean by tuning the two lowest strings down to low A and Low D, then putting a capo on the second fret. You can play the entire groove with a wonderful economy of motion, hand in first position. You do have to do it on an acoustic with heavier strings to get away with tuning it that low.

    If the drums move around, and you drop two marbles with short interval, won't it bounce uncontrollably? because the drums wouldn't have enough time to go back to the original place before the second marble hits. The drum will have different positions.

    This is so awesome, I started to learning Fusion 360 right away after seeing your previous video :D Have you thought of using metallic springs tuned inside the hihat to create slow decay effect to its vibrations? That might be used in addition to the rice to get 3 staged sound with attack, sustain and decay.

    • @tronique5736
      @tronique5736 7 лет назад +14

      The original marble machine was no different. The bass and the drums would both be too quiet without some form of amplification. In the original video you can see the audio equipment attached to the machine at some points. Many of the cooler instruments used by Wintergatan depend on audio processing, for example the Modulin

    • @TobiasWeg
      @TobiasWeg 6 лет назад

      Actually that is the first part of the MMX which I really don't like. I would much prefer some proper wood and metal parts, which would sound much more like real deal, then some plastic peaces. But may be I am wrong. Many people here seem to like it and Martin did pointed out that at the moment he is not looking for the best sound but the mechanics. The ideas for the mechanical and visual effects I do like.

    Dear Martin
    I am incredibly excited for MMX, but I have some concerns. One of the reasons that I loved the original marble machine was because you made it by hand, which somehow made it so much cooler. And one of the things that I'm kinda worried about is that with the MMX from what little I've seen of it, with all these 3D printed parts its kinda starting to look like you've assembled it from a kit, which causes it to loose its magic a bit. Anyway super excited to see what you do next.

    Stupid question, but why don't you use metal for the hi hat. Make a tiny hi hat and put the mic into the hat, like a sandwich, metal mic metal. Idk just a thought

    big doubts about that ball hinge. it'll never hold a position, you'll have to reset it inbetween every song

    • @cacheman
      @cacheman 7 лет назад +5

      He could always drill and peg it if he finds one or a couple of positions that work.

    • @Wintergatan
      @Wintergatan  7 лет назад +56

      Even when i screw it on lightly, i cant move it even when i try. The plastic breaks before the ball hinge moves! There is so much friction and ABS is a little rubbery, softer material so it glues to eachother in the position its set in!

    • @larsieo
      @larsieo 7 лет назад +2

      Unless you actually have some sort of fusing going on between the parts, I'm guessing it's moving, even if its just a tiny tiny bit.
      Lets say the bearing moves 0,05mm (in relation to the clamp) with each hit, a song is 3 min long, 120bpm, and average of 1 hit with each beat.
      0,05 x 3 * 120 ( * 1) = 18 mm.
      That's almost 80° given that the bearing d is 2,5 cm. ( 1,8 / (2,5 * Pi) * 360 )
      Even if I'm of by a factor of two, its 8°, that's not nothing when you want the ball to hit a small collector area.
      It might not be noticeable after 20 hits, but I would suggest you run an endurance test.
      Love your videos! Thanks for all the great music!

    • @NewUnit13
      @NewUnit13 7 лет назад +1

      "...I'm guessing it's moving, even if its just a tiny tiny bit. Lets say the bearing moves 0,05mm..."
      While the first part seems like a reasonable assumption, may I ask why you settled on .05mm as the amount it moves with each hit? What if instead the amount it moves is .05um? Friction locking ball joints are used all over the place in lighting, photography... hell, even on acoustic drum kits to hold things in place ( www.gibraltarhardware.com/?fa=partsdetail&curcat=2&bnd=11&cid=104&sid=465&pid=1589 )...
      With precision built 3d parts you'd have nearly 100% contact between the parts, so to me it seems perfectly reasonable to assume that given enough tension it'd hold what little weight and force impacted by a marble would impart...
      Like you though, I have no idea if what I _think_ is true, is actually true.. so endurance test away :)

    • @larsieo
      @larsieo 7 лет назад

      +Edward Russell II The 0,05mm is just an example :)
      As for the the hinge in a full size drum, they use rubber to absorb the energy from each hit or are made out of steel, wich can be tightend much harder than ABS. Since ABS is much more ridgid than rubber and mor brittle than steel, there is much less absorbtion of the energy in to the material, wich could move it.
      Im no engineer so all of this is ofcourse speculation :)
