Stanley Clarke is one of the greatest bassists ever.Check out School Days and East River Drive
Man, Stanley Clarke was such a _thing_ in the 70's. Whenever you wanted to impress your friends with your musical sophistication you'd take a Stanley Clarke album out of it's sleeve and lay that needle down..
My cousin, a bass player, talked me into seeing Stanley Clark in Chicago in the mid 70s. I thought, why do I want to just watch some guy play bass guitar? Man, was I off base. Don’t have enough adjectives to say how great he was. Awesome concert. Got a couple of his albums right after!
Stanley doing what Stanley does so well, with Jan Hammer on the keys, Bill Connors on guitar and the awesome Tony Williams on drums... you really need to look into Return to Forever; Stanley Clark bass, Al Di Meola guitar, Chick Corea keys and Lenny White drums.
He’s reacted to them already. Vulcan worlds.
Seen Return to Forever live at the Los Angeles Greek Theater. Front row. One of the best concerts I have ever been to in my life.
5th row at the Greek for Jan Hammer and Jeff Beck.
Thats Tony Williams on drums? I thought it sounded like Billy Cobham? I could be wrong. Had this back in the 80s. I could be foggy.
Hey don't forget Tony Williams and his work with the Lifetime bands!
Stanley is one of the Best Bass players in music history!!!!
I suggest bassist Victor Wooten solo and with the trio Bela Fleck & The Flecktones.
I got to see a double bill with Stanley and Victor in Dallas a few years back-- great night!
He's the best. Have you heard his most excellent collaboration with Chick Corea, Lenny White and Al DiMeola? Give "Romantic Warrior" album by "Return to Forever", and you will be rewarded four times over...because all four bring historic performances to the table. Jan Hammer and Tony Williams do some great work here. First rate. Thanks.
Good call ... Amazing album
Love Fusion!
TONY WILLIAMS ON DRUMS IS A TOP 10 DRUMMER OF ALL TIME..HIS WORK WITH MILES DAVIS,TONY WILLIAMS LIFETIME AND HIS SOLO RELEASES IS LEGENDARY.
I can't believe it! Never knew you would go into Return to Forever or Stanley Clarke!! Listen to Earth Juice by Return to Forever, and Concerto for Jazz/Rock Orchestra by Stanley Clarke.
Return to forever. That’s a wild Band!!! Stanley Clarke, Chick Correa, Al Dimeola, and Lenny White! ROMANTIC warrior, Majestic Dance etc etc etc They will Blow Your Mind!
Stanley Clarke... Just nasty...
Was waiting for your reaction to him.
The Miles Davis of bass players, right up there with Jaco.
I may be wrong, but I think he played with the Return To Forever band.
Mr Stanley Clarke... Still to this day my all time favorite male bass player..I have this album on vinyl... The entire thing is epic
And the female one? (Just curious 🙂)
Sooo many bass players have NO CLUE how much they owe to Stanley Clarke. All that funky slap-bass s**t? Stanley. If they didn't learn it from him they learned it from someone who learned it from him.
I could tell you were enjoying yourself. All of the early Stanley Clarke solo albums are fire. Tony Williams on drums. His group Tony Williams Lifetime were jazz fusion pioneers. There’s another rabbit hole you could go down.
Stanley with Jeff Beck is must. Freeway jam.
You just got introduced to the glory of early 70's jazz fusion! One of the best of all music rabbit holes to go down!
I've seen Stanley live once, with Return to Forever. Stanley is an awesome player, one of the first fusion players I got into. I hit Jaco up soon after. I'd been into Yes and Genesis prior, but once I heard these guys, I took a deep dive into this style of playing. Brand X is still one of my favorite bands, with Percy Jones on bass, he was killer. You should check out their tune Malaga Virgin. It'll blow yer mind. Phil Collins did some work with em, it was a side project for him and he turns in what I think is some of his best playing.
Ah, this reminded me of my love for Stanley's 'Rocks, Pebbles and Sand' LP, among others. And of course School Days!
Saw him live ripping the strings off the guitar at high speed very tall man with long fingers mid 70s
Undoubtably one of the best Jazz/Rock albums ever! Each musician on this album are/were masters of their instruments! The drummer is the great Tony Williams (R.I.P.). You, being a drummer need to discover him! Stanley Clarke from Return To Forever. Jan Hammer from the Mahavishu Orchestra. Tony Williams from Miles Davis and then his own Jazz/Rock formation called the Tony Williams Lifetime and Billy Connors the first, before Al DiMeola, electric guitarist of Return To Forever.
I have been waiting for someone to react to Stanley Clarke. This is one of my favorites.
"Life Suite, pt. 4" off of this album was a classic in my household growing up. Great album.
Look for Stanley Clark performing “Beat It” with Marcus Miller and Victor Wootem. Pretty wild to hear the melody on bass. From there, I hope you will be interested in diving into Marcus. :)
Hey Chod check out his song Rock n Roll Jelly featuring Jeff Beck and another called Hello Jeff. Hot Fun is another great song. You should also check out Billy Cobham seeins’ how you’re diggin’ Jazz Fusion. He’s an excellent drummer and my fav. Jazz fusion artist. Check out these songs. Stratus, Snoopy’s search, Red Baron, Crosswinds, the Pleasant Pheasant, Quadrant. Just to get you started. You will love this stuff guaranteed!!!
Im familiar with Stanley Clarke and have heard quite a bit of his stuff. But, I’ve never heard this one. My mind is blown! 🤯 This was so FUNKY! So freakin’ awesome. Thank you for this one!
You need to check out the history of drummer Tony Williams. An all time great. Jan Hammer is also an incredible keyboardist. He was with the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
"That drummer" is the late great Tony Williams
Along with Bill Connors on guitar, Jan Hammer is a Keyboard/Synth "MASTER"
It's great to expand your musical universe, you'll be amazed at what you'll find..
Thanks for checking it out, Chod.
I'm glad you liked it.
Killer tune, killer performances.
The great and incomparable Tony Williams on drums. Tony changed the way jazz drummers used their hand tempos in his very complex style, polyrhythmic style. Sort of an advancement on Elvin Jones...and his hands were so fast. When he started with Miles in that 2nd great quintet he was impossibly young. Stanley was and is a great bassist, but Tony was the innovator.
oh those drums !
Star-studded performance! Tony Williams is one of the best drummers of all time! Played with Miles Davis at age 17. Musicians like him make even most complex pieces look easy to play, but that's just an illusion. Bill Connors and Jan Hammer are killing it here.
School days by Stanley Clarke is definitely worth a listen. Also the keyboard player Jan Hammer and the drummer Tony Williams later went on to form the Jan Hammer group which I was fortunate enough to see open for Jeff Beck and then support Jeff Beck on the best concerts ever Tommy Bolin was supposed to have opened but he OD'd in Miami four days before
They are all on FIRE on that album!
I will never get over the shocking greatness of this man's fantastic "Rocks, Pebbles and Sand" Album. Incredible!
Now you have my attention. Great stuff from my youth. Killers all! Thanks.
You were properly flabbergasted, grinnin' like heck through it all. Love it.
Another fantastic bassist is Mark King from the group Level 42.
Check out the song Love Games (live SVT 1983)
I think you'll really like it
I ate this for breakfast in 74, I was 10. Turned my band director on to it. He introduced me to Marcus Miller. Pretty well versed for a teenager.
47 years ago and it is as fresh as the day it was recorded. The entire album is magnificent. For me this was one of fusion's greatest times. Get this album, you will return to it time and again I promise you.
Under the sky concert, Herbie Hancock keys, Wayne Shorter sax, Stanley Clarke bass, Omar Hakim drums...Cantaloupe Island...Same world class quality.
Oh great choice…,
BOUGHT THIS THE YEAR IT CAME OUT{CLARKE IS A BEAST} ...LISTENED TO IT ALL THE TIME{STILL LOVE IT}...JAN HAMMER ON KEYBOARDS IS A GIANT AS WELL..GREAT TO SEE YOUR LIVE FEED TODAY CHOD...ALL MY BEST ,KENT.
Stanley was in league of his own. I haven't heard this in ages. You need to hear the flaminco stuff he does.
You cannot get no better Stanley Clarke Bass the Great Billy Cobham that is so funky
That was the late great Tony Williams on this tune. There is a video of Cobham, JLPonty, C.Corea and Clark performing Lopsy Lu on RUclips from a Downbeat Winner's Poll concert.
Jean Luc Ponty “Puppets Dance”. Or anything by the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
"Lila's Dance"!
@@jimd7260 I’m listening to Lila's Dance right now. Thanks for the suggestion.
Tony Williams & Jan Hammer always/only assures a vibe .
Their Discographies don't lie .
"Oh My" is right.
A true master of the bass, Stanley also plays the upright bass. Check out Spain, which is Chic Corea's most known work, and features Stanley Clarke on double bass.
I would definitely check out Vulcan World's off return to forever album and " Hello Jeff " on the Journey to Love album.👍🤠
Sometimes it's good to be blindsided
Great! A reaction video with no interruptions! You're obviously coming to it from a musician's perspective ... I'm just a failed musician/casual listener but was as floored by this as you when I first heard it nearly 40 years ago ... One of the greatest compositions of the entire jazz-rock fusion era! Subscribed (you deserve it just for this one video =-) )
Stanley! I still play this album.
Do yourself a favor and listen to the whole lp..saw him live with Jeff Beck, what a concert!
Great album
my big bro played bass and he played this all the time... he is the OG on bass..
Growing up in the 70s was a blast
Wow! Thank you for this.
I forgot about it ( I am old 😂)
I saw him on this album tour in 1974 ( I was 20) my head exploded and I was instantly inspired.
I’m re-inspired today.
Thank you.
Saw Stanley live a couple of times, just incredible. One of the greatest bassists of all time. You should also check out Jaco Pastorius. There is also a RUclips concert video of Stanley playing with two other Great bassist, Marcus Miller and "the Maestro" Victor Wooten who played a long time with Bela Fleck and his brother "Future Man" Roy Wooten. So that's another band to check out, 'Bela Fleck and the Flecktones'.
Totally agree with Bella Fleck and the Wooten bros.
One of the BEST! If you like this, and you like Jeff Beck, try the two of them together… live. 😃 If you want to see “too much talent”, Stanley was in the band Return To Forever with Chick Corea, Al DiMeola and Lenny White. Try that live and your head will explode.
Mr. BASS!
Stanley's amazing. He was in the band Chic Chorea's Return To Forever with Al DiMeola on guitar and Billy Cobham on drums. He was also in a band with the drummer from The Poilce and a great girl singer , named Animal Logic....he was on one fo Roy Buchanan's solo cd's on the song Brer Rabbit......he also made cd's and did concerts with Al Dimeola and Jean Luc Ponty on violin that were pretty amazing all worth checking out......and so is Al DiMeola's solo stuff. Check out his cd called Casino....really good stuff.
One word: masterpiece.
This is awesome. Part of my Sunday morning jam.
Oh wow! Great suggestion. Another artist I have never heard of, but will certainly follow up on. That's what I love about your show, I have learned about so much great music. You are on a roll lately, Chod. Please don't stop!
I don't know what your musical tastes are, but you should definitely hear guitarist Scott Henderson with his band TRIBAL TECH..I think you'll enjoy them. If you want to hear something truly amazing, you need to hear THE MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA.
Jeff Beck proclaimed guitarist John McLaughlin to be the best guitarist in the world. And he's not exaggerating.
@@noelkirnon9202 Thank you, I'll be sure to check him out.
After watching your intro...I just smiled, He's going to love this!
If you wanna see something bad to the bone, check out Stanley and Jeff Beck doing this live at the North Sea Jazz Festival.
May I suggest 'Hello Jeff', featuring Jeff Beck? I also saw Stanley Clarke with Alan Holdsworth (guitar great), Airto Moreira (percussion), Steve Smith (drums) and a keyboard player(I think) whose name eludes me at a club in Toronto in the 80s, must've been. Yep. Check out Holdsworth too.
You have reacted to Stanley Clarke. Also known as the bass player for Return to Forever
That 'thumb's down' is just a left handed bassist demonstrating their slap technique.
Clarke and Jeff Beck together are incredible!
Try Hello Jeff!
Return to forever changed my musical life forever! Pun intended!
How bout some old school jazz. Peggy Lee with Benny Goodman. Why Don’t You Do Right ☮️💜
Stanley Clark is a bass legend! Thank you Thank you thank you for this! More bass legends please.
Also listen to Fly With the Wind by McCoy Tyner, and Birds of Fire by Mahavishnu Orchestra
Life is Just a Game should be next Stanley Clarke tune
If you like this jazz fusion you need to check out Crosswinds by Billy Cobham(drummer), and Race with Devil on Spanish Highway by Al Di Meola! Some other greats are Dixie Dreggs, Return to Forever, Pete Carr, and Weather Report.
Chick Corea tapped into this gold mine .
For decades .
I remember the first time I heard this on WWDB 96.5 in Philly in '74. It was a real JAZZ radio Station, not a soft jazz station that played straight up jazz and Fusion Jazz. I was blown away. Saw Stanley Twice in concert. Just amazing.
If you like this try out Weather Report "Birdland "
Seeing him at Cheltenham Jazz Festival Sunday.
After getting this album back in the late 70's and playing it to death I got the chance to see Stanley Clarke live. Man that was AWESOME. And if this rocked you, try a listen to George Duke- The Aura Will Prevail. Great stuff!!!!
I've been telling you, Rock and Roll Jelly by him is the shit.......
Legend.
The Classic Stanly Clarke albu m is School.Days with Jeff Beck of the Yard ribs doing guitar 🎸x great video also check out Headhunters by Herbie
Hancock
Check out Silly Putty off his second album, Journey to Love. Very funky rocker.☺️
Since you're widening your net, check out Oscar Peterson, arguably the best piano player ever.
Stamina!
Return to Forever 'Romantic Warrior' (entire album also)
How can a Brotha not know this? 🤣
VIRT. U. O. SO!!!!! Stanley is truly one of the greats! You should also check out The Rite of Strings (I think I may have already asked for this!!), the trio I had the pleasure of witnessing as the greatest concert of my life! Never to be topped. Period. One of my personal favourites: ruclips.net/video/iBSXObrVVEI/видео.html
Billy Cobham is so sick!
Check out “School Days”!
Master mind players
you saw him with Return to foever
Chod, this has to be something to run by Dee
Not that I'm saying these guys are on the same level, but Dirty Loops with Cory Wong "Turbo" is certainly worth a listen if you want to hear muso's playing in the pocket. Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/tjaLOk1_aRg/видео.html They do a ripping version of Michael Jacksons Thriller as well. And while I'm making recommendations, please check out Snarky Puppy "Lingus (We Like It Here)", featuring Cory Henry playing the keyboard solo to end all keyboard solos. Guaranteed jaw dropper!
Now try some Joe Sample..
Hippies On The Corner for some more fun.
Over do for some Yes, ELP, Tull etc...
Tunnel vision Return to Forever no mystery mahavishnu Orchestra Miles Davis Witches Brew weather report
