Hey everyone! There have been a lot of requests to replace the Gunblade cursor with the original Finger cursor and since I haven't been able to find a solution anywhere else, I created some files to give you back the Finger cursor. drive.google.com/drive/folders/1QRJ6atAtaOBq9_6QP9KpEEECstEhFX7U?usp=sharing Just drag and drop the files from the finger_icon folder into your textures\ic\iconfl01 game folder. The original Gunblade cursor files are also included just in case something breaks or you see something that you don't like, and you need to roll back to those files.
Thank you for the guide. I don't know why but I had no problem with Steam overlay working without GeDoSaTo running. Whether it was a new version of Steam or being on Windows 11. Also thank you for giving me the finger. ;)
@@bobafettjr85 You are welcome for the finger! GeDoSaTo seems to have pretty specific requirements to be able to run happily. I gave up on using it after I upgraded to Windows 11 since I didn't want to turn off UEFI secure booting but the list of things it doesn't like in the comments keeps growing.
@chrisjavez Haha, I wish I could put that together in just a few hours but I'm pretty sure my 'HD font' wouldn't be something anyone would want to use :P
Hello I noticed that when targeting enemies/allies, it still shows a gunblade icon instead of a finger. Which file would I have to replace to fix that?
I couldn't believe my luck when I found this video. It would have been totally unreasonable to expect there to be such a useful, up-to-date guide so long after the release of the game! Thank you for your effort!
So I installed all the mods (not nearly as quick and easy as 7 and 9 with the UI Fronts), but big kudos to you. To make a long story short, the remastered version is the definitive version. Only the blurred backgrounds need fixing in the newest version. Everything else here you dont really need and some customizations are too much, like replacing stat abbreviations with icons. PS1 emulated or remastered is still probably the best way to play. This is also one game you really want to speed up when it comes to drawing magic and thats easiest on the remastered version.
AMAZING TUTORIAL!! Finally with this video's help I got every mod installed and working correctly!! Now I only have one very minor problem left. I'm using an old PS3 Sixaxis controller which steam does detect and works for other games, but for some reason it doesn't seem to work at all when I run ff8? Now if I can figure that out ill be in biz, but other then that SOLID VIDEO! Subbed!!!
Thanks! I'm glad everything worked for you. Good luck with your controller issues! I used to play with a PS3 controller way back when but with all the problems I ran into using it on Steam I ended up switching to an Xbox controller.
Thank you making the process easy and straight forward to follow and the mods work perfectly and the funny thing is that I have a save file for the game made so I can just skip to the gameplay and the characters looked amazing. For that I subscribed to your RUclips channel.
Dude, i watched the entire video and I salute you! I have been browsing for a day and a half for all the mods and trying to get them all together, when I found them I started to get hella confused on which mod was even the right one (version) for which game (original or remaster) YOU made this very clear and simple! Absolutely wish there were more videos like this on how things are explained. Right to the point, and kep to the point. Made it so easy to install! Thankyou so much, cause i was overwhelmed like... A LOT lol. That's alot of mods. I did do everything step by step and the only thing i have a problem with is when I start the game and right before the main menu/title the keyboard screen keeps coming up and flashing really fast. I push x on the keyboard to lower it and all seems fine except i notice the 1 0 1 0 English Steam in the bottom left corner flashes on and off. Any clue what that might indicate? I feel it has something to do with why the keyboard screen shows up too on start. Outside that it seems to run fine. All the mods seem to be there. Again Thankyou and Merry Christmas!
I'm glad my video was able to help you get things installed! I'm not sure why the '1 0 1 0 English Steam' text would flash on your startup screen, but the keyboard screen always pops up when you start the game so that part is normal at least. If the games starts without any issue then I think you don't have anything to worry about. Merry Christmas!
I thought I bought the remaster, once I found out I didn't( Square actually had the 2013 version on sale? wtf) I was happy for it. Amazing that this version even comes with the Chocobo World mini game, I wouldn't have expected that in a million years and the fact that they included it ,by itself, makes this port a million times better.
Which version do you think is currently better given the current (or near-current) modding? 2013 or Remastered? If the answer is "it depends", could you give a quick elaboration?
It depends on what you are looking for when you mod your game. Short answer is I feel 2013 is better because of game stability and mod availability. Long answer is covered below. 2013 is more stable with very few bugs that you might encounter in a playthrough. The 2013 graphical mods are very similar compared to the Remastered mods that are available for free right now. For me, the free availability of the Angelwing mod pack and absence of significant gameplay bugs are what really push 2013 over the top. However, if you do encounter an issue where there are backgrounds or models that have been missed then don't expect it to be added to the mods anytime soon since most of the FF8 modders are now working on Remastered. That being said, if you are a Patreon supporter and have access to any updated mod packs that may be available to Patreons along with the Remastered Angelwing pack then you can arguably make it look and feel better than the 2013 version. There are extra steps to take care of some game-breaking bugs that have been found with modded character models as well as a couple of other things that, to my knowledge, are only available on through Discord links at the moment.
@@VestikStudio Very helpful, thanks. I've never played FF8 on PC - somehow the lack of analogue movement always bugged me - but have decided to pick up the 2013 version based on your answer.
GeDoSaTo is completely optional. If you want to use it then you will need to launch it each time you play, otherwise you can just launch the game normally and the game will still run with the mods normally.
Thank you so much! So straightforward and easy to follow! I have a question, it's kind of a nitpick and I don't know if it's even possible, but is there a way to change the Gunblade cursor back to the classic little hand?
I haven't been able to find anything that allows you to do that yet. I was hoping there were previous versions of SeeDReborn available that still had the classic cursor, but the download links for older versions seem to be dead on the forums.
@ShiftyBread I finally had some time and made some files to replace the Gunblade cursor. Not sure if you still need it but here's the link: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1QRJ6atAtaOBq9_6QP9KpEEECstEhFX7U Just drag and drop the finger_icon files into your games textures\ic\iconfl01 folder.
Thanks for both videos explaining the procedure. Ff8 is far more intricate to mod than 7 and 9. Which final version (with all mods) do you think is better? The OG or remastered?
It depends on what you are looking for when you mod your game. I feel 2013 is better because of mod stability and availability. There are very few bugs with the OG mods compared to the Remastered mods. That being said, if you are a Patreon supporter and have access to any updated mod packs that may be available to Patreons along with the Remastered Angelwing pack then you can arguably make it look and feel better than the 2013 version. Some good news is that the mod team has said they are working on getting the Remastered mods compatible with the FFNx mod manager so the modding process might be as easy as point-and-click in the, hopefully, near future.
There are quite a bunch of seemingly newer versions and other mods. Would be nice to know wheather the Tonberry selection is still the best choice? for example: - SeedRemastered_v1-2 (UI, gray version like original) - Lionheart-Remastered_v2-0 (weapon textures) - RebirthFlame-Remastered_v2-0-V (battle char textures) - FieldModelTextures_v1-0-1 (char models textures) Furthermore there is Ragnarok Mod which rebalances the gameplay.
Thank you for this guide, it was really easy to follow. The only thing I dislike are the stat abbreviations were replaced by some unintuitive icons. Is there a way to revert it? Which mod is causing this?
SeeDReborn is the UI mod that changes the icons. You can find the files with the stat icons in in "..\textures\ic\iconfl02" and "..\textures\ic\iconflmaster". I'm not sure what would happen if you removed the files from those folders, but it might use the original game icons if it can't find the modded files. If that doesn't work then I think it would be easiest to do a clean install and not install the SeeDReborn mods. The ControllerButtons mod is dependent on SeeDReborn so if you end up not using SeeDReborn at all then make sure you don't use the ControllerButton mod either.
Amazing guide! Shocked to find something so detailed and recent on a old game. I wanted to ask two questions though. Besides these mods are there any worth mentioning to add? I also wanted to ask if I uninstall the Steam FF8 does that uninstall all the mods oto?
Thank you! The mods in this video are the most popular mods in the community but there are a few other mods you can find on NexusMods that provide some quality-of-life changes as well as a demo for voice acting the characters (not compatible with Tonberry yet). If you want to experience the game differently there are also difficulty mods like Ragnarok and Requiem. If you uninstall the game from Steam the modded files don't get removed. You will have to remove them manually from the FF8 Steam folders.
I did all the steps and installed the Angelwing mod, but when i start the game, the square logo is a screen full of corrupted graphics mess, the backgrounds in the game looks fine, but certain 2d elements are glitched, like Squall's shadow in the world map is just a white square and magic spells are all messed up. What could go wrong? Btw i have 2013's original version and just angelwing, not other mods that could make conflict.
There are different versions of Angelwing for each language so make sure you have the correct one downloaded and installed. Also make sure that you are using the latest Tonberry Enhanced version (2.04). In the .../tonberry/hashmap folder you will see the ProjectAngelWing_hm.csv file. Move that to the disabled folder and run your game again to see if the character models and magic graphics are back to normal. If they are then you can try reinstalling the mods by copying the Tonberry Enhanced files and the Angelwing files into your game directory again and overwriting what you currently have. If that doesn't work, then try a full uninstall/reinstall of both the game and the mods. Remove the textures and tonberry folders and the d3d9.dll, d3d9Callback.dll, and zlib1.dll files from your game folder, uninstall and reinstall FF8, run the game to initialize the files and load your save to make sure everything installed correctly before reinstalling your mods to see if that fixes things. Let me know if you are still experiencing the same issues after a fresh install and I'll see what I can do to help from there.
@feiwong3634 I dug around in the McIndus Discord a little and found some files to fix issues with the Spanish version of Angelwing. The link to join is here: discord.gg/3F6zdxXQUT In the #angelwing-bugfixes channel you will find the es-fix.7z file to download. Move those textures to the correct folders and it will hopefully fix some of the issues you are seeing. Was finally able to get the link for the files. This will probably be faster. discord.com/channels/502614015386583044/839888747163549716/960029752499003432
So i tried with the es-fix file, put them in the textures folders and nothing changed, then i saw the files on the hashmap folder, and i had 2, one called ProjectAngelWing_hm.csv and the other one the same but finishes with "Spanish".csv, so i put the spanish file into the disable folder and the game runs now fine, no glitches, but the certain elements in spanish language in the backgrounds like the map of the garden are now into sd resolution, but other backgrounds are upscaled and no glitches, so it's a solution! thank you!!! @@VestikStudio
GeDoSaTo is completely optional and all the other mods will work just fine if you choose not to use it. For such an old game it doesn't add a whole lot of graphical improvement so if you chose to not use it you won't be missing out at all. Use it and play around a bit to see if it's worth it for you to use or not.
The Roses and Wine link on this page has the files to mod the music thereunion.live/software.html The URL has been updated since I made this video. I have updated it in the video description.
Ive played up until after Dollet mission with 2 crashes going into battles. Ive downloaded and done everything the same except for having Roses and Wine & Ragnarok already on it before hand. Would those 2 pre loaded be the cause? Did i miss a compatability issue posted?
I haven't seen any compatibility issues between Ragnarok and Tonberry but I did run across a steam forum thread that talked about FF8 crashing because of hardware issues as well as verifying that your game files are installed correctly (Game Properties -> Installed Files -> Verify integrity of game files). steamcommunity.com/app/39150/discussions/0/666828126593014842/ If none of that works, then you can try a full game/mod reinstall and make sure to install Ragnarok after the Tonberry mods. I'll continue looking into this and post anything else I find.
If you feel like you need more help and quicker responses to get your bugs taken care of then you can jump on the McIndus Discord server if you aren't already a member. There are many people on there who are more knowledgeable about how these mods interact than I am. discord.gg/3F6zdxXQUT
@VestikStudio I started getting the crashing again, turns out the GedoSaTo was giving me issues and it's been 100% crash free since. Disc 2 and 3 done no crash
Thank you so much for your tutorial ! Did you have to disable the UEFI secure boot in order to make Gedosato working ? Because I have an error msg when launching it. Thanks
I didn't do anything with the UEFI settings. What is the error message you are seeing when you try to launch the game? Have you tried launching the game without Gedosato?
The message was "It appears you are using a windows 8 or 10 system with UEFI secure boot enabled. This prevents Gedosato from working correctly. Please see the readme file." and they say we must disable the secure boot, but I don't feel very safe doing this honestly. Did you made your video on a win8/10 OS ?@@VestikStudio
I made this video on Windows 10. Gedosato will sharpen the graphics a little but it isn't a required part of the mods. You should be fine running your game without using Gedosato. I must not have my computer set up to use UEFI secure boot so I didn't run into this issue.
I've followed everything and it seems like its working fine. However I noticed the FMVs have this annoying greenline down the right edge of the screen. Does not matter what resolution I use or whether or not i play in fullscreen. I tried to do some digging and i saw 1 post on qhimms talking about it but the trail went cold...
I haven't been able to run the FMVs myself. My computer is a potato and has decided the upscaled FMVs are too high quality to the point where it causes my game to lag and desync with all sorts of things. I'll try and borrow a better PC to see if I can find anything. In the meantime, have you tried running the game without GeDoSaTo to see if that changes anything?
@@VestikStudio appreciate the response. I'd like to say there's really no response to this issue cause everything i've tried seems to have left me at a dead end. From the single forum posts, to the multiple troubleshoots. However I noticed that when you play the raw FMVs from the FF8 movie folder, they appear perfectly fine. Strange. The only other issue I have is the higher resolution not going fullscreen when using GeDoSata. If I use 2560x1440 everything is fine. However once I go with 5120x2880 the games resolution is locked in a tiny window.
At this point it might be best to use the original FMVs if the green line is too distracting. If I am able to find something that fixes the FMVs I'll make sure to reply here as well as update the video description. As for GeDoSaTo, if it's working at 2560x1440 then I wouldn't bother trying to get 5120x2880 working.
HELP! Did all the steps (or atleast I think I did), when I went to load it up, it loads up, music, improved graphics and all, but the windowed screen I can play it in,, is like roughly a 3x4 window instead of the whole screen or a "full screen effect" is there a keyboard shortcut I can use or an edit of some type to restore full screen? Aside from that, Fantastic walkthrough! wouldn't have had the time and patience to walk it like you explained it. Thank you!
NVM, I think I fixed it, I play on a 4k monitor, and I set the settings to double the resolution on the settings (from my normal 3840x2160 to 7000x4320), which gave me the small screen, when i went to down scale it to my normal 3840x2160, it now shows full screen with writing in the upper left corner "down sampling 1 level 3840x2160->3840x2160 lancos scaling"
@@VestikStudioQuestion bud, I'm watching a few let's plays on youtube, is there a mod that allows you to save whenever? or is that something they gave with the remastered edition?
@@bassx101 As far as I'm aware you can save anywhere on the world map but you need a save point in towns and dungeons. I'm not aware of any mods that allow you to save anywhere without a save point in towns and dungeons.
hello, all worked fin but every time i tried to use my ps4 controller, the game just doesnt recognize it, even using ds4, any ideas of why this happens?
very helpful guide. The only mod I can't get to work is the button prompt, it keeps showing keyboard buttons instead of PS4 buttons. The forum posts haven't really helped and it seems the mod creator is MIA. I followed what you did so not sure what went wrong.
If you used the button files from check the file in your folder to make sure the file copied over correctly. I've also noticed that if I start my game before I turn on my controller I will get the keyboard buttons instead of my controller buttons.
@@VestikStudio I seem to have found a fix, I was using the Main when HID ones seem to work for me. Also I wasn't actually checking the config most of the time but just the first screen that says the keyboard key bindings that would make me think it wasn't working
Wait a minute. Did everything right but the texture remain the same. Is it because I have echo s8 installed prior tonbery? I read in comment section that this mod is not supported with tsunamods
That's correct. Echo S8 is not compatible with these mods. It takes priority over them so the mod textures don't end up get loaded. You can either have Echo S8 or the texture mods installed but not both. Efforts are currently ongoing to get these mods compatible with the FFNx mod manager tool that would allow you to have both the texture mods and Echo S8 installed at the same time.
@@VestikStudio Thanks this just answered my question. Because the Gedo Soto wasn't working. I change screen resolution in the files and nothing just a Hour Glass. And this makes sense when I deactivate Gedo Soto it starts working again.
But is this the mod that gives squall the face that is most similar to the original (more mature too, might I add)? Because I knew that they are working on this mod that I'm talking about.
I'm looking to install this modpack onto my Steam Deck. If I went through the mod process on my Windows machine, then copied over the install folder fully replacing the one on Steam Deck from a vanilla install (And making sure I've got visual studio installed in that bottle) would I be good? Or would I be wasting my time?
I don't own a Steam Deck so I'm not sure what the process is but the steps in this link gets the modded version of Remastered working on Steam Deck so I assume it would work for this version as well. steamcommunity.com/app/1026680/discussions/0/3593339057329933860/
Been banging my head against a wall trying to figure out how to swap out that gunblade cursor that comes with SeeDReborn. Has anyone had any luck? I'd love to just have the upscaled classic UI with the pointer hand, but swapping the texture sheets doesn't appear to help much with either the cursor or the text box gradient.
There have been a lot of requests to replace the cursors and since no one has been able to find a solution so far, I've decided to put my meager Photoshop skills to work. Here is a link with some files you can use to replace the Gunblade cursor: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1QRJ6atAtaOBq9_6QP9KpEEECstEhFX7U?usp=sharing Drag-and-Drop the files from the finger_icon folder into your FF8 textures\ic\iconfl01 folder and you will have the finger icon again! I've also included a copy of the Gunblade cursor files in case the finger cursor files mess something up.
@@VestikStudio haha, well then... now I feel bad for trying to find a solution that didn't require me to open my own copy of Photoshop. I appreciate the time and effort, on top of the time and effort you put into the excellent video. Thank you!
So im back.. So i followed the instructions in this vid to the letter and i even ended up finding a fix to my controller woes. However now i've run into a new issue, it seems when loading some areas or running into a battle, I will still hear the music play as now but get an error 'An unknown exceptions has occurred' and the game hangs (music still audible and not glitched) and will not load further until the error is acknowledged and the game shuts down. Is this an issue with tonberry? Pls halp :( this has been such a debilitating process
I'm so sorry this has been such a difficult process for you. If you have already done a full uninstall of the game and mods along with a clean reinstall then your best solution would be to jump into the McIndus Discord and get help from the man himself. discord.gg/3F6zdxXQUT I'll continue looking on my end and post an update here if I am able to find anything.
There was another commenter that was running into crashing issues as well and they said that GeDoSaTo was causing the crashes for them. Try running the game without GeDoSaTo to see if that fixes your crashes.
I did everything but I don't get the extra resolution options in the game settings. -Yes the FF8 EN and Launcher appear in the GeDoSaTo drop down list under edit settings. -Yes I ran it as administrator -Yes they are on my C Drive
Since I've upgraded my PC GeDoSaTo hasn't worked for me at all so I can't troubleshoot it anymore. If you want something that does the same thing but better, you can try ReShade. It has better support and there are a bunch of tutorials on how to set it up to work with your games.
@@VestikStudio I just gave up and played at 4k resolution since that's what the highest was. It seemed to work fine. GeDoSaTo itself says everything is okay, but the resolutions don't show up in game. Thanks for the great tutorial. If only there was a way to make the game truly 60fps instead of just making the animations faster.
Random question When i launch everything is working, except the resolution of my monitor is 2k, but there is no 4k option and the resolution looks like its 480p. I have the Gunblade cursor and an improved menu page, I'm not really sure how to fix this .
Sounds like it could be an issue with GeDoSaTo. With the amount of issues I've seen in the comments I would recommend launching the game without GeDoSaTo running to see if that fixes anything.
@@VestikStudio Thanks for taking the time to reply. I attempted to configure GeDiSaTo, with no luck. I took your advice and stopped it from running and found everything worked perfectly. Thanks again for the video and help :)
Do you know of any mods for this version of FFVIII that uncensor the blood/armbands? I've been searching for anything that reverts the visuals back to the Japanese visuals with Gerogero's red organs, the red armbands, and the blood in Ultimecia's armory back into the game, and I can't find anything. Or a mod that fixes the sound effects issues for the summons?
I don't know of any mods that replace textures with the original Japanese textures. I did a quick search through QHIMM and NexusMods and didn't find anything. I'm not sure if there are any other big sites that host mods for FF8.
@@VestikStudio I actually found a romhack to uncensor the PS1 version, so I can play that upscaled with Duckstation to look really close to the Steam version, and play that way
it's possible to use these mods with demaster + ragnarok mod? i'm having crashing issues with graphic mods with demaster and tonberry together. I installed horizonpack in demaster folder and it worked very well but glitched as hell with angelwing 3.0... Edit: editing tonberry textures path in config file and sync with demaster texture folder might fix that? (i dont figure out how to edit tonberry config file xD)
I'm not sure what the answer is for that since I haven't ever installed Ragnarok. I would guess that you wouldn't want to use the Demastered tool at all with the Tonberry mods since it was made for the Remastered version of the game. Here are some instructions I found in the QHIMM forums with installation steps for the 2013 version: Setup instructions for 2013 Steam: 1. Backup the contents of your lang-en folder (steamapps/common/FINAL FANTASY VIII/Data). 2. Replace the relevant files in your lang-en folder with the ones from the download package (check Standard or Lionheart Mode folders). * 3. Download and install Roses and Wine W07 to the game's root folder. 4. Place the Ragnarok_mod.txt file from the download package root in RaW/GLOBAL/Hext. * Make sure to always keep movies, world and magic files inside your own lang-en folder. To check if the mod changes are active, do the following: Start a new game and check Squall's spell inventory. He should have some spells by default. If not, you are missing the files from the lang-en folder (see Step 2). Next, go check the Draw Point in Balamb Garden's library. It should contain Double instead of Esuna. If it does not, Ragnarok_mod.txt is not at the right place. In order to revert the changes applied by the mod, replace the modded files with the ones you backed up and remove the Ragnarok_mod text file from RaW/GLOBAL/Hext. Ask for help in this thread if necessary. Here is the link I pulled the instructions from: forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=18404.msg258999#msg258999
I have followed the instructions and ran the game but don't see any of the changes. Was there something that I should've done besides copying all the texture files and run the game? I ended up using a different mod method known as demaster and demaster mod textures and they work perfectly fine but this tonberry folder method doesn't work for me. Is there a way to 'activate' the tonberry?
The Tonberry mods are for the 2013 Steam version of the game. The Demaster files are for the 2019 Remastered version of the game. It sounds like you are using the Remastered version of the game so the Demaster files are the ones you want to use.
thank you for the tutorial. for some reason my xbox one controller is not working in the game, is there any fix to this? and cutscenes are in 15FPS, is there any mod to increase to 30 fps atleast?
As far as I'm aware there are no higher fps cutscenes available. Are the inputs not working on your Xbox controller or are you talking about the controller icons in the game itself? If I remember correctly controllers will only work if you have them turned on and connected before you launch the game.
@@VestikStudio for some reason controller didnt work in Bluetooth, but i was able to fix using steam controller settings to assign keyboard buttons with controler inputs.

I cannot seem to extract Roses and Wine. It is a Torrent File. Did I miss the step where you explain how to deal with said torrent file? 7z will not unzip it.
I didn't cover how to use a Torrent file in the video. It's basically a file that allows you to download something using a Peer-2-Peer download method. Basically, getting portions of the file you want from many other users and not from a central location like normal downloads. It would take a whole other video to explain the process and cover all the bases for safe torrenting and there are other videos and guides that do it better than I ever could. Search "how to torrent" on RUclips or another search engine to learn about it. The process is pretty simple, but I wouldn't feel right adding it to this video without covering the safety and security hazards that you could run into while torrenting files.
roses and wine not working for me, version is the same 07, and when i install i have no music just sounds, when i delete ddraw.dll and restore dmusic files then it plays original music, if i copy ddraw.dll to raw\custom\dlls then it gives audio error and says it wil not use roses and wine
After you run the Roses and Wine installer as administrator are there any files in your "..\FINAL FANTASY VIII\RaW\GLOBAL\Music" folder? It should work after it finishes running without you having to move any files around on your own. Try running Roses and Wine and checking the "Uninstall this mod (ignores all options above)" option to uninstall it. Then run it again and select the tracks you want to see if it was just a software hiccup when you ran it the first time.

Just sign up, download the mods, and then you are free to cancel your subscription. Quick disclaimer about using the Tonberry mods with the Remastered version of the game. Even though there are some textures that may be compatible between both games most of the Tonberry files will cause the Remastered version to completely crash or have significant glitches. That being said, you are welcome to experiment since it is pretty easy to restore files that are corrupted by either reinstalling the game or using the Steam File Integrity tool. The only files that are unavailable for free in the Lunatic Pandora mod suite are the Angelwing files.
From what I've seen in the comments GeDoSaTo is hit or miss. If it's not working for you then don't worry about using it. It doesn't offer much of a visual payoff anyways. If you enjoy playing around with the graphical quality, then there are other programs like ReShade that you can try instead.
Do you have the correct hashmap file for your language? The Italian version can be found here under the second post made by McIndus: forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=15945.0
Which mod are you trying to find the keys for? If this is an error message, what message are you seeing? Most of these mods are drag-and-drop and shouldn't require any type of decoding keys. The only one that requires much setup is GeDoSaTo and I don't recommend using it anymore as it's hit or miss depending on your PC setup and the improvement it provides is negligible.
Correct. Luckily the same group of modders support both sets of mods and are able to use what they learned making these ones and incorporate what they could into the Remastered mods.
@glungusgongus The Qhimm forums and the McIndus Mods discord server are going to be the best resources you can find for these mods. Here's a link if you want to check out the Discord: discord.gg/3F6zdxXQUT
Secure boot error it appers that you are using windows 8 or 10 system with uefi secure boot enbed this pervents gedasto from working i got this error message whnwe trying to run geto and dont fully get what i means
If your system has uefi secure boot enabled then I wouldn't worry about using GeDoSaTo. The graphic improvements aren't worth the tradeoff for turning uefi secure boot off since it's a windows security feature. There are other programs, like ReShade, you can look into that do the same thing but better.
I did everything in order, but when I got to the point where I have to launch the game there was no text at the top left. 1440 144hz if that makes any difference
I'm not sure what would make it so the text isn't visible after the game starts but if you troubleshoot a few things you can assume everything is running great. After you open GeDoSaTo, make sure the "Activate" button is greyed out. That means it's active. Next, click on the "User Whitelist" button and make sure you see these two entries: FF8_EN || Final Fantasy VIII Game FF8_Launcher || Final Fantasy VIII Launcher If those are there the next step is to make sure the extra Resolution options show up in the FF8 Settings window. If you get the extra options, then I'm pretty sure you don't have to worry about the text showing up or not. Seeing the text is just an easy way to tell that GeDoSaTo is working. In your case the resolution should be 5120x2880 @ 60Hz. After launching the game just make sure that everything looks fine. Look for screen tearing, the game rendering in 5120x2880 instead of 2560x1440, check that GeDoSaTo is still running in Task Manager, and anything else that doesn't feel 'right'. If the game is running as expected, then it's safe to assume that GeDoSaTo is working fine.
@@VestikStudio Whenever I use that resolution, the game will only display in a tiny window. I used whatever resolution you did in the video and it worked
Is there an issue doing this on windows 11? I can play the game without the mods, no problem, but once i install them (minus the gedosato stuff), the game will not open. I even did it WITH the gedosato and the game will still not open. It "launches" but it doesnt actually launch...any ideas?
The only thing that comes to mind is to make sure you are installing these on the 2013 Steam version (original port) of the game and not the Remastered version. There is another set of mods for the Remastered version. These mods aren't compatible with the Remastered version. If you have the right version of the game for these mods then your best chance at troubleshooting would be to remove the mods and install them one at a time and run the game between each one you install to see if there is a certain mod that is keeping your game from launching properly.
@@VestikStudio Thanks so much, sorry for such a late reply. I will try 1 by 1 and see how that works. EDIT: I reinstalled the game through steam, its not the remastered version. I did step one, the visual ++, no problems there. I did step 2, and the game will not start...lol...any ideas? I just deleted the tonberry enhanced files and it works fine...
Unfortunately, Echo-S 8 isn't compatible with the Tonberry Suite of mods. However, McIndus and Tsunamods are working on getting these mods compatible with the FFNx mod manager so that they will be compatible in the future.
They really need to figure out a way to make installing mods easy. I keep BEGGING people to play FF7 with mods, and even with 7th Heaven, people find it too difficult.
There are now 3 versions of FF8 that have been released. The 1999 version is the original release on disc for the PS1/PC and it isn't compatible with these mods. The 2019 Remastered release has its own set of mods. The 2013 release is the Steam port of the game which is what the mods in the video are for. Steam uses DirectX 9 for the port so these mods are specifically made with that in mind, and they will not work on any other version of the game. If you are using the 2013 version of the game, then there have been some people who have reported that GeDoSaTo has been messing things up so you can run the game without GeDoSaTo to make sure that isn't causing problems. If it's still not working, then I would suggest uninstalling the game and removing all the mods from the game folder and then trying a clean install of the game and the mods. If you are still experiencing issues after the reinstall then your best bet would be to jump over to the McIndus discord and see if they can help you out: discord.gg/3F6zdxXQUT
Try running the game without GeDoSaTo. Make sure to double check that the Video Settings in the launcher have the Fullscreen box checked and the Resolution set to 1920x1080 @ 60Hz or whatever the best selection for you monitor is and then try running the game again.
@VestikStudio Ok, I fixed the fullscreen issue but for some reason the character models don't load so I can't play the game past setting squalls name. Any fix?
@ihezen9816 I haven't been able to find anything different than what you've already heard in the McIndus Mods Discord. I'll continue to look and post any updates when I find something.
i know this out of the subject but isn't there anyway this team behind this mod can work on Digimon world 3 i really wish if Bandai rework this game or any team can do their magics to it
I wish some of my favorite games could be modded or reworked, too! All it takes is for someone like you to get the project started and others will most likely follow and start contributing. Most modders are really generous and will answer any question someone about getting a mod project started!
@@VestikStudio the problem is i don't know what group going to listen to me or to my request if you can provide me name or link to group i am down to ask them and i hope this dream come true and ya i agree with you so many games out there i wish for rework for it
@Vandares I'm pretty new to the community and am only familiar with a few of the Final Fantasy mod groups. I would start by asking in the McIndus discord in the #off-topic channel and what you can find out there. If you have a plan or are willing to put in some of your own time to learn how to mod then any group you find is going to be much more receptive. Here is a link: discord.gg/3F6zdxXQUT
Yeah, much pain. However, the modders are currently working on getting the mods compatible with the FFNx mod manager so sometime in the future this will become a click to install process.
Haha, brings back the good old Napster nostalgia! For what it's worth, file scans and virus scans on my end show that at least this Roses and Wine torrent file is clean.
It should. This is a link for getting the Remastered version to work on Steam Deck but it should work the same for this version of the game. steamcommunity.com/app/1026680/discussions/0/3593339057329933860/
The closest you can get is by setting Steam to offline mode. As far as I'm aware, there is no way to get around using the Square launcher if you are using Steam to play FF8.
GeDoSaTo has caused problems for many people so if you ended up installing it try running the game without it. Other than that, I would recommend removing the mod files from your game folder and doing a clean install of your game so you can install each mod one at a time and run the game so you can see which mod is giving you that error.
I didn't realize that was already out! It sucks that it's not compatible with all the graphical mods yet and nuked your mods. The most recent post I could find from the Tsunamods team says that are currently working on getting all the McIndus graphical mods compatible with FFNx. Once that's taken care of you should be able to enjoy the voice acting and updated game graphics!
Are you trying to copy the files directly from the .zip folder? I remember something similar happening to me. If you unzip the folder first and then copy the unzipped files over it should go much faster.
Let's see if we can get it working for you. First, try launching the game without GeDoSaTo. There have been a few commenters that are having problems with it. If that doesn't work then I'm going to need a little more information about your game and the errors, if any, that you are seeing when you try and launch the game. Are there any error messages you see or is it just a black box? Which language is your game? There are some language specific mod files and if your game isn't the English version then you might need different files to match your version. Did you install all the mods? Did you try a clean install of the game and mods after it failed to launch?

Those mod packs aint that good. Horizon Pack 3.0 had original textures upscaled, and now it is unavailable. The newer version replaces original textures with different ones. Why would i want that. The BattlefieldPack "recreates" or "gives completely new artwork" to some battlefield. I'm trying to setup this game for my first playthrough, i definitely wont use that. Simple upscale would be good "enough" (would be best). Project Hellfire is also just too much of a change. Adds things that weren't. Apocalypse looks great (what Project Hellfire should be) but now "certain animations won't work". Ok, than i'm not touching it. And now, should i change enemies textures to upscaled ones, when i leave bosses untouched? Rest of the mods (and those are most important ones - playable chars textures and backgrounds) hopefully doesnt inlcude some "creative additions", and just upscale the textures.
There isn't a mod for that yet but there are applications that you can use to modify the game to be widescreen. I haven't personally done this yet, but you can play around with ReShade to make the game widescreen. Here is a Steam thread that has instructions on how to do it: steamcommunity.com/app/1026680/discussions/0/1635291505041144048/
Hey everyone! There have been a lot of requests to replace the Gunblade cursor with the original Finger cursor and since I haven't been able to find a solution anywhere else, I created some files to give you back the Finger cursor.
drive.google.com/drive/folders/1QRJ6atAtaOBq9_6QP9KpEEECstEhFX7U?usp=sharing
Just drag and drop the files from the finger_icon folder into your textures\ic\iconfl01 game folder.
I gave up on using it after I upgraded to Windows 11 since I didn't want to turn off UEFI secure booting but the list of things it doesn't like in the comments keeps growing.
thanks for the finger cursor, now how about classic font hd 😁✌
@chrisjavez Haha, I wish I could put that together in just a few hours but I'm pretty sure my 'HD font' wouldn't be something anyone would want to use :P
Hello I noticed that when targeting enemies/allies, it still shows a gunblade icon instead of a finger. Which file would I have to replace to fix that?
This should be the standard for tutorials, going above and beyond for what most would consider a thankless task. Much appreciated Vestik!
I really appreciate that! I'm glad the video format worked well for you!
There are so many things in there that anyone would mess up very easily. Thank you so much for the tutorial!
I'm glad the video was able to help you!
I couldn't believe my luck when I found this video. It would have been totally unreasonable to expect there to be such a useful, up-to-date guide so long after the release of the game! Thank you for your effort!
You are the man. Thank you for taking the time after so many years of these mods being available to make this video!
Fantastic guide. Well spoken and with clear directions! Thank you for a well done video.
Thank you so much, i played the remaster on console and was disappointed , not long built a beasty pc and this has blew me away ❤ appreciate you
thank you very much for making modding this game so much easier for me to understand very helpful guide
I'm glad the guide helped! Have fun with your playthrough!
This is also one game you really want to speed up when it comes to drawing magic and thats easiest on the remastered version.
remastered cant use the succession mod though i dont think which is very much needed imo
That mod is garbage. It just makes the game into a bad fanfic.
Such a straightforward tutorial. Thank you so much, man.
Thank you making the process easy and straight forward to follow and the mods work perfectly and the funny thing is that I have a save file for the game made so I can just skip to the gameplay and the characters looked amazing. For that I subscribed to your RUclips channel.
I appreciate it! I'm glad everything is working for you!
This video was just brilliant to follow, thank you very much Vestik
Thank you for the kind words! I'm glad it helped
Watching this in 2023, thank you so much!!!
Ace guide dude, worked like a treat
I thought I bought the remaster, once I found out I didn't( Square actually had the 2013 version on sale? wtf) I was happy for it. Amazing that this version even comes with the Chocobo World mini game, I wouldn't have expected that in a million years and the fact that they included it ,by itself, makes this port a million times better.
The best video ever!
10/10 tutorial!
I have the "remastered" edition buddy
@@Deidde Hello, How are you? How are you doing with the 2013 version?
Clear, concise, well spoken, even an idiot like me could follow it :P
I'm glad it worked for you!
Brilliant ,thanks managed to get everything done ,do you need to launch Gedosata each time you play ?
Not sure if you still need it but here's the link: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1QRJ6atAtaOBq9_6QP9KpEEECstEhFX7U
Just drag and drop the finger_icon files into your games textures\ic\iconfl01 folder.
@@VestikStudio Thank you so much!
Would be nice to know wheather the Tonberry selection is still the best choice?
for example:
- SeedRemastered_v1-2 (UI, gray version like original)
- Lionheart-Remastered_v2-0 (weapon textures)
- RebirthFlame-Remastered_v2-0-V (battle char textures)
- FieldModelTextures_v1-0-1 (char models textures)
Furthermore there is Ragnarok Mod which rebalances the gameplay.
The Remastered versions are for the Remastered version of FF8, not this version. I believe Ragnarok is compatible with these mods as well.
@@VestikStudio thank you! Im pretty sure i used the files for the version i use (Spanish), but i will do as you say and try again.
@feiwong3634 I dug around in the McIndus Discord a little and found some files to fix issues with the Spanish version of Angelwing. The link to join is here: discord.gg/3F6zdxXQUT
In the #angelwing-bugfixes channel you will find the es-fix.7z file to download.
Thank you for the tutorial! One question. Do I have to open GeDoSaTo everytime I play FF8?
GeDoSaTo is completely optional and all the other mods will work just fine if you choose not to use it. For such an old game it doesn't add a whole lot of graphical improvement so if you chose to not use it you won't be missing out at all. Use it and play around a bit to see if it's worth it for you to use or not.
Thank you for your work. Any mods for the music?
The Roses and Wine link on this page has the files to mod the music thereunion.live/software.html
The URL has been updated since I made this video. I have updated it in the video description.
A different version for the FMV"s would be nice, the one you posted has a weird green line on the side :)
Ive played up until after Dollet mission with 2 crashes going into battles. Ive downloaded and done everything the same except for having Roses and Wine & Ragnarok already on it before hand. Would those 2 pre loaded be the cause? Did i miss a compatability issue posted?
I haven't seen any compatibility issues between Ragnarok and Tonberry but I did run across a steam forum thread that talked about FF8 crashing because of hardware issues as well as verifying that your game files are installed correctly (Game Properties -> Installed Files -> Verify integrity of game files). steamcommunity.com/app/39150/discussions/0/666828126593014842/
If none of that works, then you can try a full game/mod reinstall and make sure to install Ragnarok after the Tonberry mods.
@VestikStudio I did a fresh reinstall and mod, doing ragnarok after everything from this video. Seems stable now.
I'm glad that's all it took! Happy gaming!
@VestikStudio I started getting the crashing again, turns out the GedoSaTo was giving me issues and it's been 100% crash free since. Disc 2 and 3 done no crash
Thank you very much! Muito obrigado!
Thanks so much man XD
Thank you 😁
Thanks you so much
I've followed everything and it seems like its working fine.

Here is a link with some files you can use to replace the Gunblade cursor: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1QRJ6atAtaOBq9_6QP9KpEEECstEhFX7U?usp=sharing
Drag-and-Drop the files from the finger_icon folder into your FF8 textures\ic\iconfl01 folder and you will have the finger icon again! I've also included a copy of the Gunblade cursor files in case the finger cursor files mess something up.

If you have already done a full uninstall of the game and mods along with a clean reinstall then your best solution would be to jump into the McIndus Discord and get help from the man himself. discord.gg/3F6zdxXQUT
I'll continue looking on my end and post an update here if I am able to find anything.
There was another commenter that was running into crashing issues as well and they said that GeDoSaTo was causing the crashes for them. Try running the game without GeDoSaTo to see if that fixes your crashes.
@VestikStudio oh crap do i not need to have it enabled every time I play? I'll have to try that and report back.
I did everything but I don't get the extra resolution options in the game settings.
-Yes the FF8 EN and Launcher appear in the GeDoSaTo drop down list under edit settings.
-Yes I ran it as administrator
-Yes they are on my C Drive
Since I've upgraded my PC GeDoSaTo hasn't worked for me at all so I can't troubleshoot it anymore. If you want something that does the same thing but better, you can try ReShade. It has better support and there are a bunch of tutorials on how to set it up to work with your games.
@@VestikStudio I just gave up and played at 4k resolution since that's what the highest was. It seemed to work fine. GeDoSaTo itself says everything is okay, but the resolutions don't show up in game.

When i launch everything is working, except the resolution of my monitor is 2k, but there is no 4k option and the resolution looks like its 480p. I have the Gunblade cursor and an improved menu page, I'm not really sure how to fix this .

Here are some instructions I found in the QHIMM forums with installation steps for the 2013 version:
Setup instructions for 2013 Steam:
1. Backup the contents of your lang-en folder (steamapps/common/FINAL FANTASY VIII/Data).
2. Replace the relevant files in your lang-en folder with the ones from the download package (check Standard or Lionheart Mode folders). *
It sounds like you are using the Remastered version of the game so the Demaster files are the ones you want to use.

for some reason my xbox one controller is not working in the game, is there any fix to this? and cutscenes are in 15FPS, is there any mod to increase to 30 fps atleast?
As far as I'm aware there are no higher fps cutscenes available. Are the inputs not working on your Xbox controller or are you talking about the controller icons in the game itself?

The Angelwing package for scene backgrounds isn't finished yet but you can get what is available from the creators Patreon for the $2 subscription.
I don't think GeDoSato is working for me, my game doesn't launch full screen
From what I've seen in the comments GeDoSaTo is hit or miss. If it's not working for you then don't worry about using it. It doesn't offer much of a visual payoff anyways. If you enjoy playing around with the graphical quality, then there are other programs like ReShade that you can try instead.

i cant seem to find the decodification keys for the mods, what should i do?
Which mod are you trying to find the keys for? If this is an error message, what message are you seeing?
Most of these mods are drag-and-drop and shouldn't require any type of decoding keys. The only one that requires much setup is GeDoSaTo and I don't recommend using it anymore as it's hit or miss depending on your PC setup and the improvement it provides is negligible.
So FF8 and FF8 Remastered are supported completely differently
Correct. Luckily the same group of modders support both sets of mods and are able to use what they learned making these ones and incorporate what they could into the Remastered mods.

If your system has uefi secure boot enabled then I wouldn't worry about using GeDoSaTo. The graphic improvements aren't worth the tradeoff for turning uefi secure boot off since it's a windows security feature.
There are other programs, like ReShade, you can look into that do the same thing but better.
@@VestikStudio ok then
I did everything in order, but when I got to the point where I have to launch the game there was no text at the top left. 1440 144hz if that makes any difference
I'm not sure what would make it so the text isn't visible after the game starts but if you troubleshoot a few things you can assume everything is running great.
After you open GeDoSaTo, make sure the "Activate" button is greyed out. That means it's active.
Next, click on the "User Whitelist" button and make sure you see these two entries:
FF8_EN || Final Fantasy VIII Game
FF8_Launcher || Final Fantasy VIII Launcher
If those are there the next step is to make sure the extra Resolution options show up in the FF8 Settings window.

They really need to figure out a way to make installing mods easy. I keep BEGGING people to play FF7 with mods, and even with 7th Heaven, people find it too difficult.
This is really for the 1999 version??? Did everything you did in the video and the game still vanilla at 100%... :(
There are now 3 versions of FF8 that have been released.
Is there no widescreen mod? That is the biggest thing holding me back from going through the process for either this or Remastered
