Since Zeus signed with HLE and Kiin already resigned with GenG, T1 was out of options for top lane and signed Doran as soon as he was available. Doran really saved T1's asses here. He could ask for a crazy high contract price and T1 would still do it since they were desperate for a good top laner after losing both Zeus and Kiin, but Doran basically agreed to T1's first offer because he is a Faker fanboy.
It seems like Doran is a real grinder at the game. Always see him practicing solo queue. Wish him the best next season and hope he can conquer whatever plagues him!

Personally, Doran is an amazing player but he's terrible at improvising. He need time to adjust when things went south, and the enemy often exploit that weakness. I hope by joining T1 he can improve even more under the coaches and the team's guidance, and brought even more fans to his name.

Zeus was resource hungry during his run at T1. He is a good player but he also has weaknesses (weakside top, tank champions). This weakness forced T1 into a weakside bot and a strong side top with a facilitator/tank Jungler. Bringing in Doran will allow the botlane to carry more often, Keria to play more interesting champions, and most of all, a carry style jungler. Remember Oner was a fantastic carry jungler during that meta (Graves, Nidalee, Xin Zhao, Lee Sin, Vi)

When Zeus opted out of T1 he suddenly became the best of best although he was not good without Faker being around. Doran consistently performed in various LCK top teams but was always the scapegoat if things did not turn out at Worlds. From my point of view teams always win together but also loose together. If Chovy is considered the best toplaner (which he is mechanically but also not because he plays risk averse and therefore misses certain chances) them Doran should be the best toplaner winning more LCK titles on HLE and Gen.G than Zeus. But it also remains a fact that Cups and League are played to qualify for and win Worlds. It‘s everybody‘s dream and ultimate goal, no second thought ! Chovy will win it if he starts to take risks and learns to loose. To become a good player, you have to fail first. Without failing you don‘t know your limits in playing LoL and cannot work on them … I think Faker analyses much more lost games than wins because it’s the defeats you learn from over and over again.
