Ah, the 3 Hunchback in a fursuit that gives Atlas' pilots nighmares.
I fell in love with the murder bear after I stumbled on a short story how Kodiaks were used as literal dropbears years ago. It was absolutley ridiculous and absolutely glorious.
It definitely makes an impression.
What story is this you speak of?
Why do we love the Kodiak? 1) Ghost Bears Legacy Intro 2) so many weapons that it WILL shut down on an alpha strike if the SSRMs lock. 3) Totem Mech
I knew I forgot to include something...
4.) Onikuma
@@MechanicalFrog I think you forgot the heat of the second UAC20 shot, that would take it from 67 to 74 when standing still.
Is a mech even armed if alpha striking doesn't cause a nuclear meltdown?
Ghost Bears Legacy intro was a GOAT moment.
🎶 Look for the Bear necessities, the Kodiak wrecks enemies,
forget about your worries and your strife. 🎶
🎶I mean the Bear necessities, it's medium laser energies
That rob your luckless enemies of life! 🎶
Well done.
C'est Magna Firestar-riffic.
In my last game with my Ghost Bear force, my Kodiak managed to kill a pristine Atlas in a single round. The Atlas called out the Kodiak pilot and both closed to point blank (literally touching each other), while a city battle raged around us. Seeing the opportunity for what it was, I fired every single weapon into the big beautiful target.
All but one laser hit. Everything. Ripped the right torso out with the Ultra AC20,melted the center with the lasers, and the missiles peppered the remaining metal until the Autocannon ammo blew. Not only did the Kodiak survive that battle, it went on to kill a hunchback three turns later.
I will never not love this big beautiful mech, and it's ability to tear things apart at all ranges.
With missiles, Lasers, Autocannons, and even Bear hands.
Why do I love the Kodiak? Because few other mechs can give an Atlas pause, and none can do it with this much style.
Been waiting for this video for a long time, well done as always! Thank you for doing my favourite mech justice! Long live the Ghost Bears!
That is one epic battle!
To paraphrase a wise man’s hallucination, it’s an Intensive Care Bear
Of course it cares. It cares to support its allies and people by malevolently mangling enemy machines.
Except the ones with jump jets, they are more like Gummi bears jumping everywhere.
Who doesn't love a big cuddly bear? My favorite variants are the ones that like to give hugs.
But, they ALL like to give hugs?
The Kodiak is a Care Bear: the CT lasers are it's Care Bear Stare!
@@MechanicalFrog And that's the point.
@@MechanicalFrog they can all give hugs but some, like the Kodiak II prefer to blow kisses.
@@RalphyNoPants Now I know why the Timberwolf exists... The Catapult was sad it could not hug, so the Clanners gave it some arms to hug with.
I can BEARLY contain my excitement to watch this!
Now I regret taking out the joke about Agent Clawson.
The Kodiak: 100t of "You just fucked all-the-way up."
FAFO
"You must face the gazebo alone", was not expecting that reference 🤣🤣🤣
Gotta keep you on your feet.
"Remember that even when Clan Wolf loses, they really win."
Mary Sue, the Faction.
*writes that down*
I maintain it was bearable (badumts) until they became the biggest win for crusader ideology.
They can't even design a totem mech and they call themselves ilClan. Pfft. Kuritas are more clan-like than them.
Timber wolf isn't their totem mech?
@@OmniMontel No, Totem Mechs are designed to resemble their Clan totem animal; the Warwolf has a bigger claim to that title on that technicality.
That snow raven Kodiak just wants to give hugs.
big hugs.
The video has been out for 3 seconds- why yes, I do love the Kodiak!
Win!
The Kodiak is just one of those mechs that looks like it should have a manufacturing date of 3130. Similar to the Vapor Eagle.
The Kodiak arrives precisely when it plans to.
your scorn for the XXL fusion engine is well-deserved
Makes a clan XL look cheap and simple, makes an inner sphere XL look sturdy, and eats into your heat budget even when idling at a standstill. It's going to take at least two Star League to Clan level evolutionary leaps forward in making that tech truly worth it. Though with such advancements, you might be able to make "standard" "light" and clan "xl" engines even better.
I like the Kodiak because it is one of the few clan melee brawler mech built back when the clanners were still saying melee was taboo. I can just see one of these taking a right hook from an Atlas, before ripping into it with the claws, then his sibs giving him shit for it afterwards. Also, there needs to ba a varient with real Claws, and maybe TSM.
Remember kids, don't poke the bear.
Maybe Firestarter next?
ha, TRUTH!
Extra claws. All the claws.
@@MechanicalFrog complete with laser knuckles
@@MechanicalFrog How about this: 2 Claws, 8 ER Medium Lasers in the arms, 8 Micro Pulse Lasers in the Side Torsos, 4 Jump Jets, and Triple Strength Myomer. Weight is the same but not sure about the space.
@@drewgilbertson I don't know if it's legal, but it sounds like a VERY fun show that would also leave infantry in mental shambles or closed caskets.
Man, I didn't even need the video to know why people love it: I looked at the thumbnail and I was in love. Just look at it! It's so friend shaped!
It truly follows the old adage of "If not fren, why fren shaped? :("
Indeed...
It is just the style of the Kodiak, it is just that awesome looking. Makes sense that a clan that still appreciates art is able to design something with such a unique and powerful appearance.
On the Kodiak, those 4 jump jets are considered a melee weapon.
Why do you need a melee weapon, when you can become the melee weapon?
@@diaztheshipwright9092hey, it took out Natasha Kerensky, so it's valid
A wholesomeness I wasn't expecting for one of the Clans, with a closer family bond vibe. Still, neat to see.
Just saw MW5: Clans got pushed back to October 16th, but that actually works out for me.
Frog's gone full crunch...Kodicrunch: the tabletop friendship ender!
Love the Ghost Bears, and the Kodiak:)
Much to love.
As a Ghost Bear player the Kodiak is my 2nd favorite assault (behind the Executioner- hey look my name). I have some problem driving Kodiak because that big red button is just a siren song that's too strong. But when it hits things, it hits them like a 100 ton brick to the face....
And the scene from GBL where it bursts through the ice to mess up a Maddog is pretty epic!
"Oh bother." -Kodiak MechWarrior battlecry.
My takeaway: Ghost Bear is actually kind of chill, Clan Wolf is simply not allowed to lose, and this thing is _really_ scary in close range combat.
Glad you seem to have been paying attention.
The Kodiak is the final form of a Clan Atlas in my opinion.
Debatable, but certainly ONE of the heirs.
It's certainly leaning that way, but I'd say that it's more of a cousin or nephew of the Atlas. Certainly has its DNA, but it's more clan side shines through
@@bthsr7113 Oh for sure. I just meant it fits the criteria for the specs and design ideology that Kerensky originally put out for the Atlas originally.
@@spacewolfblackmane19 That's what I said. Final form of Clan Atlas.
Kodiak Kings Knights. 3 clan er large lazers (1 CT, 2 RT), 8 clan medium pulse lazers ( 4 RA, 4 LA), 2 clan er small lasers (1 CT, 1 Head), 1 clan LRM 10 with 1 ton of ammo (LT), ferro fibise armor, 22 clan double heat sinks, XL fusion engine
The Kodiak I ran had pulled the UAC/20 & ammo and a ton of streak ammo for an LB20x and 3 tons of ammo (2 cluster , 1 slug) with it I ruined a lot opponents...
I do love it when my daughter hears your videos and comes running in yelling "MECH FROG!!!" another great memory from my love of battletech
another good video sir...
In MWO it's funny using MASC because nothing says scary than a 100 ton bear mech suddenly sprinting and unloading in your face. Still very hot though.
I struggle to justify any of the variants outside of a some select niches. The prime is just too iconic and impressive. The spinoff though, that is evocative and complimentaty of the original prime. And as Shax would say, welcome to Bear Pack
I guess one could say that the initial Clan Ghost Bear outlook on Operation REVIVAL was... overKHANfident. An opinion that had to... BEAR some correction and introspection. And I guess the outcome of Tukayyid gave the Crusader-minded members... some PAWS.
...Okay, I'll go. Please don't hug me with that Kodiak.
100x Kodiak Hugs.
My friends chosen clan is Ghost bear and I’ve stared down this mech more than a few times. If it gets close it ruins my day spectacularly. In universe I’d imagine seeing a mech this size not only run but friggin’ FLY towards you make you reach for your spare underpants. IMHO one of the cooler and better totem mechs as it is very ghost bear.
First game I played as Ghostbear I brought out The Glacier Nova . Colors white, light blue and deep blue.
When players saw my big boy, they announced. "Frag he brought a Pedo Bear. Hide your light mechs!"
Jumped behind a marauder II and then it was all butt jokes.
I won the match, but the shame... the shame.
Opponent was Wolf Clan.
So. Yes. They won even after losing.😅
😊
Life is full of little challenges.
RIP that one Jade Falcon Vulture pilot - you know the one. Jack 12, I think he was. Nobody's ready for Jump Jet Kodiak.
Poor jack.
Love the new mech sheets you're showing us, by the way. Looks great
Glad you like them!
Thanks for this video! Of all the mechs I designed for FASA back in the day (there were alot!) this is by far my favorite. Seeing folks sharing that love makes me very happy! Keep the videos coming, I love them! :)
Glad you enjoyed it and thank you for your contributions to the universe!
The fact that it's FAST proves to me Ghost Bear did their research.
If you've ever seen a Kodiak run...well.
Let's just say they're deceptively swift for their size
Not as swift as a Charger or Mann O' War, but it can do a lot more hurt before throwing paws.
Again the kodiak 2 is terrifying with those jumpjets.........just picture a DFA with a Kodiak.
MW2 Ghost Bear's Legacy intro says hello :)
I like the Kodiak MF, but I don't think parts of the Raven Alliance would-I suspect they tend to mistrust anti-infantry weapons on Star League-ish 'Mechs due to the infamous the Santiago Massacre
I have a soft spot for the clan second line mechs. While I am a devoted Highlander pilot (on tabletop) I really enjoy the Atlas on TRT that is the Kodiak.
Ironically the Atlas hero mech AS7-BH in MW5 is built like a Kodiak and one of the most busted mechs available in the pre-clan invasion game.
Here's hoping that they include clan battlemechs alongside the omnis in MW5 clans!
I mostly detest the Clans. I really really mostly detest the clans.
...With one strange exception. Ghost Bears. The only clan that had a bit of introspection. Looked at the available evidence and their actual experience and said, "We were wrong."
While the Crusader remains, irrationally, my very most favorite mech, This loveable bear filled with cruel cuddles is a close second. I've had mixed success playing with or against it, but there's just something about it. I love it.
thanks for the video! it's true, I love the Kodiak
(not the Kodiak II, though-it's a fine fire support command 'Mech, but steps away from what makes the Kodiak so cool and is way uglier to boot)
Ah, the Kodiak, it's like a 2C version of the Atlas, which is probably the reason I like it alongside the other 2C Clan 'Mechs.
It also looks _kind of_ like a bear, for folks who think the Atlas' skull face is more silly looking than intimidating (not myself, I love the Atlas).
All I know is when that Kodiak burst out of the ice, god that was so cool.
GET WRECKED SON
Ahh, the Kodiak, aka "What happens when you smoosh two Atlases together and then dress it up as a bear." Totally ridiculous, utterly glorious.
I may not be as grizzly a player as most here, but this bear of mech embodies my unease with clan mechs. All kidding aside, I just don't like them. They are too much, and too good. I don't think I have ever enjoyed a game as an IS player vs clans, win or lose. In my head the Kodiak is the poster child of "too much" even though there are are other clan mechs that are more "too much." Sadly, I have to say, I do not love the Kodiak.
An absolute beast of a mech easily my second favorite of them all. It's lack of Omni pod tech is actually a major bonus in the grand scheme of logistics, helping to keep its price actually somewhat reasonable, and not nearly as reliant upon massively over stretched supply lines. To call this thing a second line mech is the height of stupidity and poor writing.
But I wouldn't be entirely honest if I didn't say that I am massively in favor of its redesign, as its original form is ugly as sin, and I'd probably leave it behind too.
My first intro to the Kodiak was in MW2M, in the mission where Kurita hires you to steal one. Naturally the option to keep it for yourself will burn the contract but net you a real killer of a 'Mech.
It was also a nasty card with some excellent art in the CCG.
One of the few clan machines I like. Why? It remembers how to throw hands. Why yes my other ride is a Axeman howd you know?
It's not a perfect analog, but I think the Kodiak is the closest thing to an Atlas IIC, between the appearance and the loadout-though it's faster, not quite as tough, and arguably more close-ranged
I can see that.
i love the Kodiak, its current CGL design just looks so fantastic
Couldn't agree more!
We love the Kodiak because it's a disgustingly effective brawler with an awesome aesthetic.
Indeed...
The Kodiak is practically an Atlas IIC in all but name. You'd think the Wolves would have made something like that (since the Atlas II was Nicholas Kerensky's mech of choice), but nope.
Honestly my only beef with the Kodiak is that so many ER Medium lasers is usually not viable to be used all at oncd unless your planning on running out of ammo and needing them as backups. It might be a better idea to drop 4 and add a 2nd ER Large Laser and greatly increase its long range punch
Some one gave me a kodiak couple weeks ago. Fun paintimg
Yeah the artist nailed that model.
Why do I love the Kodiak? Because I love bear hugs!
Fact Check: True.
Cuz big bear go RRRAAAWWWRRR!!! 😂
rawr indeed... rawr indeed...
I swear Frog just wants to watch the world burn, what with putting plasma weaponry on EVERYTHING.
The Kodiak is cool tho
How much plasma? All the plasma.
Since I met it in the Mechwarrior 2 ghost bear, I think the variant I like the most is when you put 4 ultra 10 cannons and 8 ERSML, 4 per claw.
Dakka bear.
This video showed me one of my most jarring mistake in life: I don't own a CGL Kodiak miniature. I have to address this ASAP. 🐺🐺🐺
It's a fun one.
My favorite clan mech period no contest. Just give it real battle claw and I’d give my soul to the dark gods. Also I was just looking for Kodiak art and saw this had watch.
Maybe downsize the engine to find the tonnage?
Look at him, he just wants to give you a hug! There really needs to be an ilClan variant with fully functional claws.
Warm and fuzzy hug.
Rule of cool.
Now if only we can get one where every last aspect of it was customizable.
Missile boat bear loaded with inferno ammo and plasma rifles. So cool, yet so hot!
Post video idea for load out;
Rac-5 instead of uac-20.
Four plasma rifles.
Left torso gets addition armor and is basically a cased ammo bin.
Any space left over goes to er-med lasers and heatsinks.
Trying to stay under cooking levels while torching the target mechs.
Ghost Bears are space Vikings so it automatically makes them way cooler than Clan Yiff A.K.A Clan Nicky's Kierensky Fursona.
Claws + Battlefist, TSM (15/30 damage!) on one hand. Five Heavy Medium Lasers on the other hand. Supercharger instead of Jump Jets 4-6-[8] (bears run, but they don't jump). Ultra AC/20 with [15] ammo. ER Large Laser. 58 heat (Alpha at a run), 100 damage at range 9 / 130 in melee.
ahh the Kodiak the first of my painted Ghost Bear Omega Galaxy mechs
Sweet!
Being a freebirth scum I would never openly say anything good about clan tech. Like that like the bear the Kodiak looks and plays awesome. How the loadout is scary and effective. Nope, I would never say how I have to procure one and paint it at some point... Cheers
"A single Kodiak II provides enough emotional support for two full lances! Or four fifths of a binary. Or 1.333333x of whatever Kerfufflers use."
No wonder this ad was only broadcast once.
Such a fun design! It screams "Omnimech?? I don't need no stinking OMNIMECH!". Seriously though, its combination of UAC20 plus lasers and SRMs means it can open huge holes in targets then kill them with crit seekers.
I think the line art for the Kodiak II is based on the Mechwarrior 4 Clan Pack model. It is not as good as the original version or the CGL art. And the variants are horrible. Good call skipping them!
Why do we love the Kodiak? Easy.
What I want in a mech
- short ranged weaponry to say the boom boom equivalent of fuck you
- the armor to get in range
- the speed to get in range
What the Kodiak has
- all of the above
- not enough heat sinks
And finally, what I’d do
- drop a pair of medium lasers for more heat sinks
- if needed swap an ssrm 6 for an ssrm 4 so I can still have a crap ton of crit seekers
What I would then have
- Boar’s head, but now a dire wolf killer
Inner sphere forever but i love the kodiak :-) looks intimidating and punches with the looks too...a rare combination :-)
I can 1v1 a kodiak with a Catapult using 2 ERPPC and 4 LB2X and Improved Jump Jets in MechWarrior Living Legends.
Kodiak has poor armor for it's size in that game and like the atlas it's head is supper easy to crack open.
ah yes the Kodiak my absolute favorite Clan mech it's never let me down yet and ever since I got the Grizzly the Kodiak/Grizzly combo has let me steamroll in TT Battletech 🤣 I also prefer the CGL design over previous designs
Honestly It might be the best all around Clanner assault mech. My only issue is the UAC 20, it should have been a Gauss Riffle or a UAC 10 + 1 ton of ammo and armor. The look of it is 10/10 Ghost Bears took an Atlas and said "what if we made it look like a bear?" Also you can tell from looking at it what it was designed to do get close and just ruin everyone else's day.
Every time I hear you say "ghost bear" all I can hear is the class roll call scene from Perfect Hair Forever. I'm betting nobody has any idea what that is and that's a shame. It was a short lived Cartoon Network show in the same vein as Aqua Teen Hunger Force. It's absolutely hilarious, although it's a very specific type of humor.
Hello Frog.
One comment on the video... your mouth was too close to the microphone and thus S's end up seeming 'squelched'. Other than that, the video was up to your usual standards.
As for the Mech. I have a love-hate relationship with the Kodiak. Hate, from having faced it so often at the hands of various Clan players. Love, from the few times I actually was able to salvage one and field it against various Clan players.
I love the Kodiak becauae the Kodiak II was the leader of my first good team for the battletech clix game, the Steel Wolves Geoff Baker I believe.
I picked up the IWM model so I could have him back for classic battletech.
Its combination of range, forepower and sheer drip did it for me. It was aggressive, cool and deadly.
I love the Kodiak, it's the only assault mech that doesn't need to alpha strike to do as much damage as an Atlas alpha striking.
Also, Frog, how high did you get after finishing the Kodiak MF? Since you managed to install all three of your obsessions in it: Jump Jets, Plasma weapons, and Anti Infantry weapons.
Man, I really want an official Kodiak variant with the actual melee weapon Claws and TSM.
Bergan Industries produces TSM, so there's reason for the Bears to get access to that tech.
The new artwork looks really good, but i prefer the head in Alex Iglesias´ MWO depictions.
Armament on this bear is absolutely devastating, but you need to get close enough to unleash its full power.
I find the "Cale" variant to be such a hodgepodge of weapons and systems that it almost boggles the mind, at least they should have gone for either IS er OR normal lasers, not mix them.
Plasma Rifles on a Clan design, we´re feeling daring today XD
I'd still prefer the quad Gauss Kodiak. That thing was terrifying.
Playing AS, my nephews are driving me nuts because they only want to use the Kodiak II with the Harjel III. We're working on getting them off the idea that they need to be using the most powerful variants with the highest damage possible. That and they've been having issues with their dice rolls, repeatedly giving them far higher damage rolls than chance should allow.
I will never forget the fun i had in my KDK Spirit Bear In MWO i remember making a last stand behind a large rock in a lake i made my last stand and would have won if it wasn't for thos meddling inner sphere kids :P No i got a couple kills in before i went down.
I hate how overnerfed the agility stats are in MWO. It's meant to be an agile counterpart to the Atlas but in that game it's slower despite the Atlas having armour quirks on top. All because a single variant KDK-3 dominated the poorly balanced game.
I love me a Kodiak, and it's a big part of why the Ghost Bears were one of the first factions in Battletech that drew my attention. One of my favorite ever custom mechs is a Kodiak with claws and triple-strength myomer, which I designed solely out of my shocked disbelief that we didn't already have an official variant with real claws.
I like how it works as a very close range focused very fast 100 ton clan mech. It feels like a clan successor to the Atlas with the rather nasty looking claws instead of the skull as the object of fear, and unlike the atlas running away is less of an option with the 4/6 movement profile means it can better close with the enemy.
I feel like an opportunity was missed to give the MF 8 medium pulse lasers instead of the er mediums, as they would pair very well with streak missiles for a bunch of accurate fire.
Seeing the Kodiak in MechWarrior 4 was truly awe inspiring.
Most certainly helped it was paired with what that game had called "Clan Streak MRM 40" in each arm: impossible to not recoil in fear to a pair of those.
"even in clan wolf loses, they really win" and that is why I have learned to hate them from bigred's livestreams. FFS, how you make factions like that interesting and other settings is you do things like make their logistics terrible and show how that utterly devastates their ability to fight back.
And then you have the hells horses which seemed to be the token "the inner sphere gets a victory over the clans" subfaction.
I saw you were making this so I decided I was going to clean off the paint I put on my Kodiak….Turns out I melted the base to it and now it is as squishy as a sponge. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry
I always loved the look of the Kodiak, even if it's Clanner mech. But to have dual Plasma rifles on that?! That's a thing of beauty
I'm playing around with a Rasalhague Dominion variant that swaps some things out to reduce heat, ammunition dependance and give it actual battlemech claws on each arm.
The Kodiak always felt like an unofficial Atlas IIC to me. Which isn't a complaint by any means 😂
GBL ignited my love for this beast and clan GB in '96, power overwhelming.
Appreciate the color schemes, I have a Kodiak in my backlog that I’ve been wondering how to paint it up
Ah yes, the Incredible Hulk of Battlemechs. One of these serves as a command mech in my pirate army
So, would that be...AN ENRAGED GAZEBO?!?
Yes it would...
Wolf's Dragoons has a Kodiak in Zeta Battalion all the way in 3152.
Love the Kodiak. But "kerfuffle" detected, so dislike must be deployed.
