SWITCH THE GASOLINE OVER TO PROPANE! The energy density will be slightly less, but it burns cleaner, which is IMPORTANT in confined spaces without good ventilation. Plus, Propane doesn't care what orientation it's in, so it can keep going even if the suit falls over. Also, small Propane bottles are cheap and easy to swap out like a fusion core. And propane won't decay like gasoline will, so barring any leaks, it'll last forever. TL:DR, Propane is a straight-up upgrade.
@@duckfoo quick google search says 34 MJ per liter with gasoline vs 25 for propane it terms of density per kg its slightly higher for propane so for the same amount of time the gas is lighter but the tanks are heavier so the practical ratio will be bigger than 2/3 Maybe its worth a consideration but i have no clue how propane compares to gasoline in terms of bhp and torque outputs per liter displacement and varriying amounts of cillinders. adding a turbo would be cool though more efficiant and you'd get the engine screaming and that turbo spoolling up chefs kiss

I think its because to the average person its a lot less tangible than "Hey we made a custom AR HUD" or "Hey we made both arms work" This episode is more of a future proofing episode and to some people it may seem its hardly worth the effort

8:20 neither did the Fallout universe! the "Fusion" Cores that power armour uses are actually fission batteries, they were only called "fusion" to make them seem cleaner and safer, as they were also used in cars and other stuff in the Fallout universe pre-war.
Some of them where real fusion, in fact the whole fission batteries thing is a Fo4 recon. The car were always fission however (can gas but that was running out).
*mass fusion only made one slightly before the war we don't know for sure if anyone else like poseidon or another company made it though given the retcon for power armor to use fusion cores specifically they where at least the most prominent in the market (or they just got really lucky with the contract) even if it was a lie and "just" a then common fission battery
The lecture on power density, great way to explain the issue plaguing basically every attempt at viable non-gasoline transportation. Gas and gas motors are massively more power dense than alternatives currently available (LNG, EV hydrogen, etc), plus recharge/refuel much faster. Engineering Explained did a vid on this once as well.

This is the coolest thing ever! As a big fallout fan and a researcher in medicine, I have always found this suit so interesting and used to dream of owning one. I always thought myoelectric sensors would be best for intuitive control, but this cuff design is really clever! Can't wait for the next episode!
The way you made intuitive movement, as well as the idea of "zeroing" the suit when you enter, would totally validate needing to receive power armor training in-game.

I liked the power density lecture, you covered the high points without getting too deep into the weeds. On the other hand your explanation of the power pack design glossed over several rabbit holes like heat management. Which components physically fit where doesn’t take into account their thermal environment, stuff like that, but I get that there are a half dozen similar rabbit holes like vibration and airflow management there at least. I suspect that you only got into the depths that you did because a large part of your audience can see things like that without you having to hold our hands. Thanks for the respect, people.
Yeah I do worry about overheating and cooling management especially for the electronics the engine and the user. Because I know the engine produces a lot of heat and it’s next to a lot of electrics. So they have to keep the electrics and engine cool if not there very well could be an explosion on ones back.

I wish they had had explained their thinking about that, it'd have been interesting to hear about the different solutions, pros and cons etc.
The augmented and complimented movement / strength you got going here is remarkable. Definitely the right direction guys! The fact that the compressor fires up during use to maintain pressure....that's real world functionality. Gas is the right choice too - energy density is king here, plus that menacing noise is prime. So when do I get to hop in the suit :P
is it? i think, energy density isnt that much important if you dont wanna use it unpowered. much more important is power to size ratio. therefore i wouldnt go pneumatic but hydraulic. its also more precise. pneumatic is easier to work with, but in the end, it has way to much disadvantages. but its ok for a prototype i gues.

@ i dont think hydraulics have real negative sideeffects when operating. unpowered movement still would be possible if its part of the design, but i also dont thinks its necessary. hydraulics only may more dangerous for the operator and the enviroment, since compressed gases arent a problem at all. it think thats why they do it pneumatic. its ok for a prototype.
The engine revving to match the arm movements tickled my brain so much. That was *SO* cool. Just the thought of the suit humming at different frequencies depending on how much you move 😊
They are, but not as common as you think. It needs to be a perfect pinhole leak to inject. Power loader has blown some fittings, a surprise, but just like water leaking. Tldr hydraulic injections are scary but not that common
Hydraulic cylinders can move fast, it's limited by the pump. It takes alot of energy to pump fluids. In some f1 cars they use fast hydraulics for the gear change cylinder. Pneumatics is way easier to work with tho 👍
The fact that you guys are able to do stuff like this is inspiring. My only advice with the hybrid system in finding a less dangerous fuel source when you are in a enclosed space or at least make sure that the engine has proper exhausting to make it quieter and to keep the fumes from disorienting whoever is in the suit. but you could always make a air system to the helmet which would be sick.
@@hacksmith i think people mentally equate this lil two stroke thats used in bursts to running a car in a closed garage for extended periods. as long as you point the exhaust away from the user (which most people tend to) i cannot see how carbon monoxide/fume buildup in the helmet/environment could be an issue :p
@@hacksmith Most concern I have is the exhaust fumes from gasoline are filthy. The CO can be dangerous if the motor kicks in too much in an enclosed space, but likely it will just be more of an annoyance to other people around if they're stuck smelling the exhaust at, say, a convention. Otherwise as long as you guys have decent ventilation in your workshop, and with how planned out this project is I have to assume you do because you seem to dot all your T's and cross all your I's, everything should be fine. As for the decibels... I don't really have any suggestions that wouldnt be excessively bulky, save maybe lining the outer shell of the back with foam to try to absorb some of the sound.
I am not entirely sure how and what sort, or exactly for what, but you definitely need pressure sensor in the sole of each boot. Best guess at the moment is to tell the suit what fraction of total system/user weight is on each foot, and use that input to help tell the leg augmentation system what it needs to be doing.

I was really disappointed that this channel was essentially just a "hey, look at this cool thing we did with seemingly zero effort" channel that really catered to a group of people that wanted things spoon-fed to them for a good amount of the past few years. This video is the kind of Hacksmith that I originally subscribed for - keep it up, you guys! I am loving this, and as a Systems Engineer, seeing the amount of work that went into designing the ensuring everything in the power pack played nice with each other did my heart a lot of good.
Watch the interview The Hacksmith does with Jon Youshaei, they talk about how it costs so much to keep the channel afloat because it’s basically a manufacturing company that doesn’t create consistent products. Because there’s such a financial noose around them to keep the “factory” running, they’re forced to do the sponsors and easy projects that they know will bring revenue otherwise they’d have to close up shop. It’s really sad and James opens up about the struggles it takes on his mental health since he feels forced to keep the channel going even when he’s burned out😢
That’s really impressive actually as someone who’s worked with electrical pneumatics and gasoline things. It’s hard to combine all those systems into one not to mention make them fit on one’s back. And I always find hybrid systems interesting because I know they’re complicated but it’s cool to see two different elements working together.
Yeah, I was kinda wanting to have the guys try harder to impress upon the viewers what this sort of backpack-mountable hybrid power system represents. This is a pneumatic version of the best suit-mounted power system SARCOS was able to field for DARPA and the military just under twenty years ago, and this is the work of a bunch of professional, but not groundbreaking, designers. A couple more years spent refining the control systems, and you're talking about a suit that provide useful support for jobs like logging and ranching. I feel like everyone's underreacting.
yes I hoped you would use this control system. I actually commented this idea a couple vids ago. I know it might be difficult but it would be awesome to make the control and actuation system analog as in using some sort of PID system where the bigger the pressure differential the faster the joint moves.

Well in the clip he showed where it sounded like pneumatics was for the suit opening. That doesn't mean the joints that operate the suit are also pneumatic.
I believe that the limbs are hydraulic, but the suit itself is pneumatic. Especially since the suits are supposed to be air-tight to allow for combat in radiated environments and potentially even space. So when the suit opens and closes, those pneumatic noises would be the suit depressurising and repressurising.

I think that if you ever intend to do a nother massive project like this, this series show that we don't need you to put one huge and compressed video from events of two years. These "smaller" (tf, you just made portable system to fit nicely and power all of pneumatics in safe and efficient and you say it seems like a small update? 😅 It is noisy and and I love it!! 😂) updates are great, make us see and "feel" the process of research and making it actually real. Also builds up the anticipation for the next episode! In the source source material you’re booted out of your power armor when you fusion core runs out to prevent what happens in the show from happening…happens all the time in game if you use half empty fusion cores like I do.
What irked me about FO4 was that the game would default install a brand-new 100% FC instead of the one you had been using to drain down. To prevent that, you had to open the power armor as a container and swap in the preferred FC.
Hi Guy, Love the work, I've worked in animatronics for the last 30 years. When we have built pneumatic robots in the past, we used a system where you put pressure to both sides of the cylinders, through pressure regulators. This allows you to to trim the forces on both sides of the cylinders and allows you to make the robot float in a neutral position. (Like air springs). When you want to curl the arm up. By letting the air out of one side of the cylinder the other side pressure pushed it the other way. You use flow regulators on the exhaust to control the speed of movement. Our robot is used to freak people out, because when they're standing still, you can touch, push and pull them. And they really feel life like. Though when you cut the air supply they flop into a heap on the floor. Just like sleepy people. If I was building a power suit I would use this system. As the weight of the Armor is neutralized. With our most advanced model, there was sensor feedback from all the cylinders( Pressure v Gravity) and the computer automatically adjusted the pressure depending on the body's position. This stopped flailing about when the body position changed. (say when up becomes down the pressure has to be reversed to keep the loads in equilibrium. Keep up the cool projects.

Awesome work, there is defintley an opportunity to use those prop exhaust pipes to lower the sound output of the generator significantly and also the frequency, you should make friends with the best race exhaust fabricator in town to collaborate on that as a mini project
What if the power core served two slightly different purposes for practicality? The first is that it acts more like a key for the entire system. The second for aesthetic purposes, so you can get that pneumatic insert and twist.
This is AMAZING work, I have one suggestion about financials- if you can make a full suit choose three systems and make a hybrid exosuit and market that as a B2B sale for warehouses and other industrial manufacturing. The entire financials will help pay for more suits. That way you can make one lore accurate and another with more functionality. I’m excited to see what else you build!!
If you're having a problem with slow reaction times over long periods use try using argon or nitrogen in the pneumatics should help to keep it cool Good luck! Watching this makes the child inside most of us happy.

18:20 Not sure if its something you're already bearing in mind, but you also have to consider how range of motion might change the detection. You're (correctly) identifying that if you were to hold your arm out, the pressure on the upper cuff is naturally higher because you're holding your arm up, but you can't just zero it at that point and then set the pressure differential before actuating, because then when your arm is hanging down at rest you will need to apply significantly more pressure on the upper cuff to bend the arm. The programming should take into account that the pressure differential between the upper and lower cuffs before actuating will need to increase as the arm angle approches perpendicular.
I’ve been getting into engineering and I’ve been noticing the absurd prices and was curious about the price of some of your projects, also you guys are very skilled and smart.
There projects will be 5-100k in parts, but you need alot of tools to even start something like this. This is probably one of their cheeper projects to replicate, You can build something like this yourself for cheep that does the same job. Used Pneumatics are actually quite cheep. I love how they are going the extra mile tho to make it all look nice and function well 😎👍
The solution you made to rid the armor of all the buttons was ingenious! you know what they say in Murphys laws of combat: "When two armies collide, the one with the simpler uniform wins"
Controlling the armor with your body movements is a really important point. This is how the first ever sci-fi depicting power armor, Star Ship Troopers, (1959) wrote about it, and how it presumably works in almost every setting it exists in. You push on the armor, and it moves with you like it’s not there at all.

In other cannon material (in my opinion more prevalent) when a suits fusion core runs out the individual wearing the suit is still able to move and exit the suit, just at a slower rate and assumedly the cost of greater endurance.
Amazing upgrade here. The full suit is gonna be absolutely wild and the bulletproof armor is the cherry on top. I think it would be absolutely sick to experiment with the armor in critical areas like the torso and maybe should pauldrons by using Crash Makerspace's 3d steel lattice armor design. Its fairly light weight, can be molded to whatever geography and can stop 308 rounds. That combined with the nanovate coating would be unstoppable.
This is some genius work. I’m surprised no company has done what you’re doing. I have a feeling this isn’t going to stop at power armor. You strap some rockets to this and it’s iron man mk1. Landing probably won’t be survivable. But it was a movie.
I don't know if it is relevant, but you can make the hands quite easily. Have your organic hands outside of the robot hand. Use wire (that suits the specs) as tendons for the robot hand. Have the wire be controlled by a power source, for my bachelor theses this was stepper motors due to it being for an other application. Then use flex sensors in a glove to registrate the movement of the fingers, which the power source will react to. The robot hand should mimic the actual hand movement after calibration (I set a min and max value at every boot up and extrapolate the data). You probably are way beyond this point or found a better solution, but just wanted to help spark some ideas. Awesome video.

Cant wait to see how you guys tackle the hips and ankles. Knees and upper foot are easy. The real question is beating that rigidness and allowing for torso twists or even just walking by raising the legs up off the ground even. The hydraulics alone on the hips stumps me every time I think about it without being too bulky
I've been putting off watch as I didn't have time but I just binged the first 4 and I gotta say this is the best thing since the iron Man suit, and hopefully with what was learned from this and future projects in a few years that could be revisited and maybe even possible 😅

It's sad it can't be done completely electrically, but hey... without the timeline shift in the 40's, we just don't have the fusion tech to pull it off. Next best thing, eh? Also it would be cool if the power applied by the suit was proportional to the pressure increase in the cuffs eg. the suit pulls harder when you pull harder. Also how is this not a lot of progress? in f2 for example the t51 armour used a 60kw fusion reactor

The lecture on power density, great way to explain the issue plaguing basically every attempt at viable non-gasoline transportation. Gas and gas motors are massively more power dense than alternatives currently available (LNG, EV hydrogen, etc), plus recharge/refuel much faster. Engineering Explained did a vid on this once as well.

This is the coolest thing ever! As a big fallout fan and a researcher in medicine, I have always found this suit so interesting and used to dream of owning one. I always thought myoelectric sensors would be best for intuitive control, but this cuff design is really clever! Can't wait for the next episode!
The way you made intuitive movement, as well as the idea of "zeroing" the suit when you enter, would totally validate needing to receive power armor training in-game.
This is frickin LEGIT. Like.. no jank, this is actually gonna be real easy to use power armor. And I can't wait until the armor plates have the nanovate coating or whatever it's called.
I liked the power density lecture, you covered the high points without getting too deep into the weeds.
On the other hand your explanation of the power pack design glossed over several rabbit holes like heat management. Which components physically fit where doesn’t take into account their thermal environment, stuff like that, but I get that there are a half dozen similar rabbit holes like vibration and airflow management there at least.
I suspect that you only got into the depths that you did because a large part of your audience can see things like that without you having to hold our hands. Thanks for the respect, people.
Yeah I do worry about overheating and cooling management especially for the electronics the engine and the user. Because I know the engine produces a lot of heat and it’s next to a lot of electrics. So they have to keep the electrics and engine cool if not there very well could be an explosion on ones back.

I wish they had had explained their thinking about that, it'd have been interesting to hear about the different solutions, pros and cons etc.
The augmented and complimented movement / strength you got going here is remarkable. Definitely the right direction guys! The fact that the compressor fires up during use to maintain pressure....that's real world functionality. Gas is the right choice too - energy density is king here, plus that menacing noise is prime. So when do I get to hop in the suit :P

is it? i think, energy density isnt that much important if you dont wanna use it unpowered. much more important is power to size ratio. therefore i wouldnt go pneumatic but hydraulic. its also more precise. pneumatic is easier to work with, but in the end, it has way to much disadvantages. but its ok for a prototype i gues.

@ i dont think hydraulics have real negative sideeffects when operating. unpowered movement still would be possible if its part of the design, but i also dont thinks its necessary. hydraulics only may more dangerous for the operator and the enviroment, since compressed gases arent a problem at all. it think thats why they do it pneumatic. its ok for a prototype.
The engine revving to match the arm movements tickled my brain so much. That was *SO* cool. Just the thought of the suit humming at different frequencies depending on how much you move 😊
CORRECTION: of the shelf hydraulics are slow.
There is no reason hydraulics NEED to be slow, most people just aren't that suicidal.
Also hydraulic injections from a punctured line is terrifying.
They are, but not as common as you think. It needs to be a perfect pinhole leak to inject. Power loader has blown some fittings, a surprise, but just like water leaking.

Hydraulic cylinders can move fast, it's limited by the pump. It takes alot of energy to pump fluids. In some f1 cars they use fast hydraulics for the gear change cylinder. Pneumatics is way easier to work with tho 👍
The fact that you guys are able to do stuff like this is inspiring. My only advice with the hybrid system in finding a less dangerous fuel source when you are in a enclosed space or at least make sure that the engine has proper exhausting to make it quieter and to keep the fumes from disorienting whoever is in the suit. but you could always make a air system to the helmet which would be sick.
I'm not sure the fear around gasoline... It's the most commonly used fuel source, statistically it's very safe!

@@hacksmith i think people mentally equate this lil two stroke thats used in bursts to running a car in a closed garage for extended periods. as long as you point the exhaust away from the user (which most people tend to) i cannot see how carbon monoxide/fume buildup in the helmet/environment could be an issue :p
@@hacksmith Most concern I have is the exhaust fumes from gasoline are filthy. The CO can be dangerous if the motor kicks in too much in an enclosed space, but likely it will just be more of an annoyance to other people around if they're stuck smelling the exhaust at, say, a convention. Otherwise as long as you guys have decent ventilation in your workshop, and with how planned out this project is I have to assume you do because you seem to dot all your T's and cross all your I's, everything should be fine.
As for the decibels... I don't really have any suggestions that wouldnt be excessively bulky, save maybe lining the outer shell of the back with foam to try to absorb some of the sound.

I am not entirely sure how and what sort, or exactly for what, but you definitely need pressure sensor in the sole of each boot. Best guess at the moment is to tell the suit what fraction of total system/user weight is on each foot, and use that input to help tell the leg augmentation system what it needs to be doing.

I was really disappointed that this channel was essentially just a "hey, look at this cool thing we did with seemingly zero effort" channel that really catered to a group of people that wanted things spoon-fed to them for a good amount of the past few years. This video is the kind of Hacksmith that I originally subscribed for - keep it up, you guys! I am loving this, and as a Systems Engineer, seeing the amount of work that went into designing the ensuring everything in the power pack played nice with each other did my heart a lot of good.
Watch the interview The Hacksmith does with Jon Youshaei, they talk about how it costs so much to keep the channel afloat because it’s basically a manufacturing company that doesn’t create consistent products. Because there’s such a financial noose around them to keep the “factory” running, they’re forced to do the sponsors and easy projects that they know will bring revenue otherwise they’d have to close up shop. It’s really sad and James opens up about the struggles it takes on his mental health since he feels forced to keep the channel going even when he’s burned out😢

That’s really impressive actually as someone who’s worked with electrical pneumatics and gasoline things. It’s hard to combine all those systems into one not to mention make them fit on one’s back. And I always find hybrid systems interesting because I know they’re complicated but it’s cool to see two different elements working together.
Yeah, I was kinda wanting to have the guys try harder to impress upon the viewers what this sort of backpack-mountable hybrid power system represents. This is a pneumatic version of the best suit-mounted power system SARCOS was able to field for DARPA and the military just under twenty years ago, and this is the work of a bunch of professional, but not groundbreaking, designers.
A couple more years spent refining the control systems, and you're talking about a suit that provide useful support for jobs like logging and ranching. I feel like everyone's underreacting.

I know it might be difficult but it would be awesome to make the control and actuation system analog as in using some sort of PID system where the bigger the pressure differential the faster the joint moves.

Well in the clip he showed where it sounded like pneumatics was for the suit opening. That doesn't mean the joints that operate the suit are also pneumatic.

I believe that the limbs are hydraulic, but the suit itself is pneumatic. Especially since the suits are supposed to be air-tight to allow for combat in radiated environments and potentially even space. So when the suit opens and closes, those pneumatic noises would be the suit depressurising and repressurising.

I think that if you ever intend to do a nother massive project like this, this series show that we don't need you to put one huge and compressed video from events of two years. These "smaller" (tf, you just made portable system to fit nicely and power all of pneumatics in safe and efficient and you say it seems like a small update? 😅 It is noisy and and I love it!! 😂) updates are great, make us see and "feel" the process of research and making it actually real. Also builds up the anticipation for the next episode! It's a win win approach and in case Bogdan would like to make another near impossible mech 😝 (but no, seriously Bogdan, sir, you are heck of a talented guy and the things you create are mindblowing!) we would learn of it only at the last video, so it's still not bad as previous vids would most probably do great up until that point 😅

In the source source material you’re booted out of your power armor when you fusion core runs out to prevent what happens in the show from happening…happens all the time in game if you use half empty fusion cores like I do.

What irked me about FO4 was that the game would default install a brand-new 100% FC instead of the one you had been using to drain down.
To prevent that, you had to open the power armor as a container and swap in the preferred FC.

Hi Guy, Love the work, I've worked in animatronics for the last 30 years. When we have built pneumatic robots in the past, we used a system where you put pressure to both sides of the cylinders, through pressure regulators. This allows you to to trim the forces on both sides of the cylinders and allows you to make the robot float in a neutral position. (Like air springs). When you want to curl the arm up. By letting the air out of one side of the cylinder the other side pressure pushed it the other way. You use flow regulators on the exhaust to control the speed of movement. Our robot is used to freak people out, because when they're standing still, you can touch, push and pull them. And they really feel life like. Though when you cut the air supply they flop into a heap on the floor. Just like sleepy people. If I was building a power suit I would use this system. As the weight of the Armor is neutralized. With our most advanced model, there was sensor feedback from all the cylinders( Pressure v Gravity) and the computer automatically adjusted the pressure depending on the body's position. This stopped flailing about when the body position changed. (say when up becomes down the pressure has to be reversed to keep the loads in equilibrium. Keep up the cool projects.

yep, muffler technology is insane. id wager with the right one they can get it down from 100 db to 70-80, and with a much more ear-pleasing tone.

The first is that it acts more like a key for the entire system.
The second for aesthetic purposes, so you can get that pneumatic insert and twist.
So its kinda like a pickup key? Cant drive (or use the PA) without inserting and twisting the key? Thats a pretty good idea
This is AMAZING work, I have one suggestion about financials- if you can make a full suit choose three systems and make a hybrid exosuit and market that as a B2B sale for warehouses and other industrial manufacturing. The entire financials will help pay for more suits. That way you can make one lore accurate and another with more functionality. I’m excited to see what else you build!!
If you're having a problem with slow reaction times over long periods use try using argon or nitrogen in the pneumatics should help to keep it cool Good luck! Watching this makes the child inside most of us happy.

Not sure if its something you're already bearing in mind, but you also have to consider how range of motion might change the detection. You're (correctly) identifying that if you were to hold your arm out, the pressure on the upper cuff is naturally higher because you're holding your arm up, but you can't just zero it at that point and then set the pressure differential before actuating, because then when your arm is hanging down at rest you will need to apply significantly more pressure on the upper cuff to bend the arm. The programming should take into account that the pressure differential between the upper and lower cuffs before actuating will need to increase as the arm angle approches perpendicular.

I’ve been getting into engineering and I’ve been noticing the absurd prices and was curious about the price of some of your projects, also you guys are very skilled and smart.
There projects will be 5-100k in parts, but you need alot of tools to even start something like this. This is probably one of their cheeper projects to replicate, You can build something like this yourself for cheep that does the same job. Used Pneumatics are actually quite cheep. I love how they are going the extra mile tho to make it all look nice and function well 😎👍
The solution you made to rid the armor of all the buttons was ingenious! you know what they say in Murphys laws of combat: "When two armies collide, the one with the simpler uniform wins"
Controlling the armor with your body movements is a really important point. This is how the first ever sci-fi depicting power armor, Star Ship Troopers, (1959)
wrote about it, and how it presumably works in almost every setting it exists in. You push on the armor, and it moves with you like it’s not there at all.

In other cannon material (in my opinion more prevalent) when a suits fusion core runs out the individual wearing the suit is still able to move and exit the suit, just at a slower rate and assumedly the cost of greater endurance.
Amazing upgrade here. The full suit is gonna be absolutely wild and the bulletproof armor is the cherry on top. I think it would be absolutely sick to experiment with the armor in critical areas like the torso and maybe should pauldrons by using Crash Makerspace's 3d steel lattice armor design. Its fairly light weight, can be molded to whatever geography and can stop 308 rounds. That combined with the nanovate coating would be unstoppable.
This is some genius work. I’m surprised no company has done what you’re doing. I have a feeling this isn’t going to stop at power armor. You strap some rockets to this and it’s iron man mk1. Landing probably won’t be survivable. But it was a movie.

I don't know if it is relevant, but you can make the hands quite easily. Have your organic hands outside of the robot hand. Use wire (that suits the specs) as tendons for the robot hand. Have the wire be controlled by a power source, for my bachelor theses this was stepper motors due to it being for an other application. Then use flex sensors in a glove to registrate the movement of the fingers, which the power source will react to. The robot hand should mimic the actual hand movement after calibration (I set a min and max value at every boot up and extrapolate the data).
You probably are way beyond this point or found a better solution, but just wanted to help spark some ideas. Awesome video.

The real question is beating that rigidness and allowing for torso twists or even just walking by raising the legs up off the ground even. The hydraulics alone on the hips stumps me every time I think about it without being too bulky

This is crazy cool! As a huge Fallout fan, watching this slowly come to fruition has been really satisfying. It's sad it can't be done completely electrically, but hey... without the timeline shift in the 40's, we just don't have the fusion tech to pull it off. Next best thing, eh? Fantastic control scheme, though. Love the pressurized cuffs with the motion controls. Can't wait to see how you do the "legwork" for the lower half. XD

Can't wait to see a nice optimized compact and efficient revolutionary suit all finished up in a few years! Feels like this is just a step towards a real solid aluminum/steel iron man exo suit
Wow those pressure cuff based controls were my first thought! Glad you are including that. Also it would be cool if the power applied by the suit was proportional to the pressure increase in the cuffs eg. the suit pulls harder when you pull harder. Also how is this not a lot of progress? I mean this is probably the most complex powersupply you guys have ever made! Can’t wait for more.
Hey by the way in the show you cannot operate power armor without a fusion core but in the games and cannon you still can use it without power you just move slower and are more cumbersome
