    Bleach is at the center of those who follow the BBB Method of Swimming Pool Care. There are several forums that preach Bleach, Borax and Baking Soda as the primary chemicals you will need to balance and maintain a sparkling blue pool. I fully endorse this as being true.
    The most popular forum Troublefreepool.com preaches this method religiously - this is the site I would recommend to go to if you want to just use the BBB method for your pool (using household products only). Troublefreepool.com offers many great tips and advice. They banned me at one time but I have been reinstated so I frequently will post on this forum.
    Other notable sites are:

    Most people will need a little help before they can get there so I have included in the write up a description of some Algaecides (which don't fit in to the BBB method but are needed nonetheless).
    If your pool has been neglected for some time and has green or yellow (mustard algae) you will need the aid of an algaecide -- I use this term loosely as only one on this list is an actual pesticide. The other three are algaecides in that they destroy algae but with a different method than a poison.
    Sodium Bromide NaBr:

    More relevant today than any other time. All my suppliers are so low on chlorine, I've loaded up on bleach for the summer. People probably think I'm cleaning up a crime scene when I'm buying 20 gallons lol

    You would need a 5 way test kit like the Poolmaster brand. The OTO is the solution #1 in that kit. It is a special chemical that turns different shades of yellow - darker equals more chlorine. The Taylor test kit uses a dye based test for chlorine. The OTO is more accurate since it is a chemical and not a dye. Amazon sells a lot of the 5 way test kits.

    Its helped since ive been using stabilzer and supplimentary algaecide so ive been able to lower the output of the generator. question: while TA works to make water more resistant to changing pH. Does that apply to changing it upward also? Like would it require MORE soda ash to adjust the same amount in a pool with higher alkalinity. or in a salt water pool case more of the sodium hypochlorite generation. Thank you btw, i love your videos.. they have actually saved me while working many times

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 лет назад

    The TA for a Salt Water pool should be 70 ppm to 110 ppm. People who own salt pools (and service guys too) think that their reagent has gone bad since the pH reading is sometimes (a lot of the times) off the chart high. The TA should stay relatively low in a salt pool since you are constantly adding acid and TA and pH are tied pretty close together. My salt pool stays around 80 ppm every time I test it.

    It is pretty east to calculate for that size pool. I have a video that shows you how in the "Chlorine, Sanitizers & Conditioners" Playlist. You will just need to add a small amount each day - maybe 8 oz or so.

    unrelated: what level of TA do you recommend for salt water pools? Im afraid to adjust TA to my saltwater pools because the pH is constantly driven up from the sodium generation. In the past i was baffled by how high it got until i realized where i was going wrong. due to my companies restrictions i could not adjust stabilizer, or be allowed to use algaecide. But have since used dry stabilizer to protect FC and maintenance doses of algaecide to lower chlorine demand, so i can turn down output

  • @SPL

    The amount of Conditioner affects the level of Free Chlorine that you want TFP preaches keeping the Conditioner levels low 30 ppm - 50 ppm so the ideal Free Chlorine reading will be 3.0 ppm- 5.0 ppm in that Conditioner range. If you add more chlorine it won't be protected from the Sun and burn off quickly. A 50 ppm Conditioner level won't allow you too keep your chlorine levels higher. If you have Conditioner levels of 100 ppm then it will protect a higher level of chlorine (10-12 ppm)

    Copper/ Silver ionization , baking soda to get your alkalinity in the acceptable range and 1 or 2 gallons of bleach a week is the way to go. I've used this for 25 years and will continue to do so as long as I have a swimming pool.

    We just had a hurricane and it kept raining after so I had to wrap the pump cord up to keep it from getting water in the plug. When I went to plug it in, the pool was already green like lime green jello! Lol. I unloaded 2 and 1/4 bleach bottles into the water. Within an hour, no trace of green. That's why I love the bleach.

    I have been using liquid chlorine for the pool .. and u suggested to stop using the cjlorine tabs I have high cyanuric acid. But I findyself adding liquid chlorine every two days.. im not sure if thats normal

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 лет назад

    It is normal if the weather is hot and the pool water is warm. The tablets have a higher percentage of chlorine in them and will seem to do a better job. The cyanuric acid in them helps them to maintain a good residual chlorine level in water. The bleach has much less chlorine and no cyanuric acid to help protect it - only what is in the pool. So it may seem you are using a lot but in reality you are not. In the 60's pool guys used to come everyday and add liquid chlorine to their accounts ;)

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 лет назад +3

    Probably not. Pool Stores are in business to sell you as much product as they can possibly sell you and try to up sell you just about everything in the store. I once went in a store looking for a life vest for my son - they tried to sell me a $30,000 boat too ;) Well not really but they did try to sell me just about everything I walked past and glanced at... In my line we try to use the least amount of product as it cuts into our profit margin & a homeowner should look at it in the same way.

    I would verify the 7 ppm number you posted here but I cannot access TFP at all. Basically, 3.0-5.0 ppm will keep your pool algae free, combined chlorine free and keep the water very clear. You don't need more than that.

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 лет назад

    I don't think so - Alkalinity adjustment upwards is pretty is easy to achieve. I have done it in several accounts where it got as low as 40 ppm and when I retested the next week it was already up to 80-90 ppm. Bringing it down is more of an issue.

    Do you have a video showing what chemicals to add first? We are replacing our liner & want to know where to start. We have well water.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  10 лет назад +2

      Do an initial reading once the pool is filled. Adjust the chemicals accordingly from there. Basically you will need to add some Conditioner and then some liquid chlorine of bleach. I like Natural Chemistry Instant Conditioner since it is liquid form and safe to just pour right in (sodium based). So depending on your pool size you will need one or two bottles. Each bottle will bring your conditioner level up to 30 ppm in 10,000 gallons of water. You want your Condtioner (CYA) level to be 30-50 ppm.
      Next test your pH - if it is high which is more than likely add some acid to lower it - if you have a good test kit ii will have an acid demand test. In a vinyl pool i like the pH between 7.4-7.8. Then ck the alkalinity. Again that may initially be high. The Acid you add will also lower it. 80-120 is the range you want.
      That is about it. So if you are doing the BBB Method you will need some bleach on hand, Borax to raise the pH if it drops under 7.2 and some Baking Soda to raise the Alkalinity if it drops below 80 ppm. Pick up a couple of gallons of Muriatic Acid at Home Depot or Walmart - I've seen the Instant Conditioner at my local Walmart also. If you do go to a pool store just get the Conditioner and some pool toys - nothing else ;).
      Hope that helps.

      +reid kern maintain the chlorine level at 3.0 ppm or slightly higher everyday is the best way to keep clear algae free water. You have great videos and blogs and I love the truthfulness of them. I have an idea I want to run by you. I have a salt to chlorine generator, but I am tired of dealing with the replacement of the cells, and the major hassle of adding Muriatic acid constantly to the pool. For this summer, I am thinking of going with the bleach. My question is can I use my acid hopper/feeder as the bleach infuser? I can set it up on a timer so that it runs an hour or more every day. So instead of filling the acid hopper with acid, I could fill it with bleach and adjust the time amount (with a timer) it runs by the chlorine readings I get each day. Of course I would turn off the salt cell totally. Since I have a 25,000 gallon pool, I would add one 3 inch TriChlor tablet per week to help with stabilization. I'm loathing my salt cell more and more each summer as it causes a pH problem, and therefore a ineffective chlorine problem, and it needs constant maintenance and replacement. Does this make sense?

      +str8savage Generally if you are using bleach you will not need to use the 3" tablets. However if you have a really large pool 22,000- 35,000 gallons of water you may be adding bleach every couple or every few days in the Summer. You can float one tablet a week without much movement in the CYA - Cyanuaric Acid level in a very large pool to help keep a level of Free Chlorine in the water.

    Your average sodium hypochlorite level in Clorox Bleach is around 6%, when your pool store sodium hypochlorite is anywhere between 10-12%. It may be cheaper to buy from your local pool store (at least in some areas). Leslie's carries liquid chlorine by a 4 gallon case for 17$. You get double the strength, for a great cost and for great quantity.

    • @warrior7772
      @warrior7772 9 лет назад +1

      Freddy Douglas Garcia Totally agree. Not sure why some people think it's good to use inferior Chlorox bleach at 1/2 strength and higher price. Use liquid chlorine at about 12%. I get 2 1/2 gallons from Pelican Pool for about $9.

    I started using the BBB system a year ago, only using liquid bleach (very limited tablet use). My pH and TA went sky high. I'm thinking it's because bleach has a pH of 11-13. I have to keep adding muriatic acid to lower the pH and TA. It seems the pool pH always wants to slowly rise maybe due to liquid bleach. Is this normal?

    I have a 30000 gallon above ground pool. It is time to degreen and get ready for constant temps. I live in NC. I believe in using the inexpensive chemicals such as chlorine bleach, baking soda and ?Borax powder. What I really need to know is proper amounts to add as I go along. Right now the pool is green. I understand I have to clorox, brush, vac and then maintain after water is cleared. Please take me through from beginning to end to start with removing the green and going forward.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  10 лет назад

      I would suggest using "Thepoolcalculator.com" to get the best numbers for your pool size to bring the chlorine level up to at least 5 ppm or higher. I know the forum shuns the use of algeacides but they help kill the algae faster and will save you time and money. I would use sodium bromide which you can find in these various products: Nava Yellow Algae Remover, Yellowtrine and Yellow treat. Your local pool store should carry one of those brands. Adding the Sodium Bromide will create a Bromine bank in the pool and kill the algae. Bromine is highly effective in killing algae -that is why most hot tubs use Bromine tablets and have zero algae in them. Problem with using Sodium Bromine is that it will convert the chlorine to bromine which will then allow the Sun to destroy it (Bromine does not bond with the conditioner in the water).
      So basically add bleach to get the chlorine level up above 5 ppm. Add one gallon of bleach with each 4 oz capful of Sodium Bromide and brush the pool. Cleaning the filter is also necessary. Test the conditioner level also as it should be 30-50 ppm. If it is low I would add some after you are done cleaning the filter for the last time. It takes a few days to dissolve in the system so you could wash it out if you clean your filter after adding. Or just use Natural Chemisrty Liquid Conditioner.
      Basically watch my green pool video and substitute bleach for the bags of Cal-hypo;

    The only way to get your CYA lower is to drain water out the Pool & then Refill with Fresh Water. Chlorine is not affective when CYA is either too high or too low. I have a leak in my Pool. so between the Leak & adding water & no longer using Tabs & Shock which contain CYA in my Pool, my CYA went from 113 to 60 in 4 months. I have tried Cal-Hypo also. I personally had a bad effect. Made my Pool Cloudy for a month. Liquid Chlorine = Best ACE Hardware sells 2.5 Gallons of 10% Chlorine for under $5

    I use a chlorine tablet in a floater as well and sanitizer and conditioner I pour into a floater. I add 2 cups of bleach a day to the pool. I also use algea guard (1 cup) once a week. Every week in the same day I add a new chlorine tablet to floater and add the stabilizer and conditioner to the other floater. So I always have to floaters in the pool one with chlorine tablet and one with stabilizer and conditioner. When you use bleach you have to make sure that it's regular bleach not the splash when you use bleach you have to make sure that it's regular bleach not the splashless. Or scented kind. Those have some kind of gunk in him that will mess up your filter and put a residue in your pool. It's hard to find the old fashioned regular bleach. I use Clorox concentrated regular bleach.

      You answered my question..all bleach now is concentrated.I've looked for just the reg bleach,like from several years ago,not available.Bleach no matter what brand has a slick oily feel to it, when it became "concentrated" it became almost like a silicone consistency.I (used) it to clean a tile floor & noticed it was leaving a thick chalky like haze…can't imagine pouring this into my cartridge filter.Watch the conditioner,tabs..watch anything you put in your pool for the CYA content…mine is at 100 & eliminating up to 2 lbs chlorine in less than 24 hrs.

    • @melissa0154
      @melissa0154 7 лет назад

      Whoever says I use too much stabilizer is wrong, when I started doing this method I never had to refill my pool and it never goes green. The stabilizer us added to the floater and slowly melts away as it floats. It's not a pill it's granules but in the floater it doesn't bleach out my pool on the bottom. Plus stabilizer takes a long time to melt.

    • @melissa0154
      @melissa0154 7 лет назад

      Regular bleach is no more. But the concentrated is the one to use. No spashless because it will gunk up your filter and none that has a scent because of the same reason. They have a goo in them.

      All the “normal” chemistry values that TFP uses are a much wider range compared to the ideal values from more authoritative sources (American National Standard for Aquatic Recreation Facilities). Chlorine levels of 1-3ppm are considered the target range with 3ppm being ideal (especially during the summer).
