Mike Tyson winning the heavyweight title was the most exciting inevitable thing that ever happened. After about 15 pro fights, anyone who knew anything about boxing knew that Mike Tyson was the best heavyweight on the planet, and there wasn't a close second. Still, it was absolutely thrilling to watch him go into the ring and just dominate people.

    • @SoraX66z

No there were 4 close people that he wasn't allowed to fight yet. Cus kept him from fighting foreman at all. Evander was on his come up from cruiser weight but was a monster. Tommy Morrison was picking up speed and Lennox Lewis was paid off to NOT challenge Tyson. He was the one that was stopping Tyson in amateurs.

It's amazing what a person can do with the right support system. At this time--Tyson is completely focused on boxing--nothing else. He's got people there who truly love and care for him. The structure that Cus D'Amato and Kevin Rooney provided him is EXACTLY what Tyson needed to maximize his fighting potential.

But, Tyson's story also demonstrates that career success isn't everything. You need to include a social life or else you'll be unhappy. That's one thing that Cus D'Amato didn't consider. He should have gotten Tyson a girlfriend before he became world champ.

not only that - tyson started I believe at age 14 and who even knows if he went to school at this point. far as i know, he was a gym rat. so you know what they say, 10,000 hours. so its looks like tyson was a child prodigy and found one of the best trainers from what I understand. I mean, Cus had trained 2 world champions. so he found the right teacher. this is like mozart finding the right people at such a young age. no one should be surprised, looking back, at Tyson's massive success. Dude was like Einstein of boxing and had the best teachers, and started young. Berbick started fighting at age 23! Sugar Ray Leonard made that comment during his broadcast of this fight. So Tyson had at least an 8 year head start!

@@stuh7049 Sure…keep telling yourself that. Lol You judge an athlete when he or she is or was at the top of their game. The Mike Tyson in this video would have done the same thing to all three of the fighters you mentioned when they were on top of their game. The Mike Tyson that fought Holyfield wasn’t the same Tyson you see in this video. Tyson was 30 years old when he first fought Holyfield. He’d been to prison, divorced from the blood sucking Robin Givens and had millions stolen from him by the snake Don King. He’d had problems with alcohol and drugs etc etc. He was a lost soul surrounded by leaches. This is the Tyson that was hungry, in love with boxing and had loving people around him that cared about his well being. When Iron Mike turned pro and was on his way to be heavyweight champ he was the most destructive, explosive and powerful boxer the world had ever seen. I would put Mike in his prime up against any fighter in any era including Ali. He was an absolute tank. There will never be another Iron Mike Tyson. The G.O.A.T

There are a lot of opinions about how good Tyson was, some put him near the top, others say he couldn't take it when opponents stood up to him. But this and the next two years are the Mike to judge, not the one that lost to Douglas and definitely not the one after his release from Jail. The Tyson from 19-22 was quick, with excellent combinations and difficult to tag and was in love with the sport. That Tyson is right up there, even if it didn't last too long.

It didn't last long, but he fit as many defenses into those two years as most champions do in 7 or 8. And it was the smart thing to do racking up all those fights quickly because I just don't think peek-a-boo as a tactic has any longevity. The intensity of work and focus required to pull it off is crazy - keeping that motivation over several years with all the media work and fame/money/women etc is pretty much impossible. People will say it was a weak era but he beat whatever was put in front of him. You could see the decline in the run up to the first Bruno fight, with the various delays and all the newsflow about domestic issues with Givens etc.

But what right does a boxing magazine or any magazine have to print pictures like that out of orders an under statement. And I wouldnt mind but they were pretty graffic n all not for the faint hearted, the pour bloke didnt deserve that ending. Berbick's attitude was cocky in the first round. Then after Tyson's four-shot combination which made Berbick stagger, all the cockiness evaporated. By the beginning of round 2 he looked downright scared. I think that is when Berbick realized he had seriously, seriously underestimated Tyson.

And even in this fight you can see Mike`s one weakness: His height. Yes Tyson was amazing fighter and very good aganist normal boxers. But tough fighters can last long to Tyson. But Tyson`s style requires a lot of energy. Mike also had incredible condition. But this was not enough to beat Holyfield and Lewis. Maybe he could but not destroying.

That combo when you see it in slow motion should give you goosebumps. Tyson, when he was younger and dedicated, had powerful combos that were down right frightening. Later on in his career he became a lazy one or two punch punch KO artist. Back in the day his combos and head movement was unmatched.

Tyson was near invincible from 86-91. Then Cus died. Jimmy Jacobs his manager died. Those men kept Tyson in line, as Mike respected them. Then Tyson fired his trainer Kevin Rooney. Out went the peek-a-boo style of boxing, and before long, Tyson was very beatable. And he got beat. Very sad to me, as I was such a big fan of him. I saw the writing on the wall as he got sloppier and sloppier. I remember having a bad feeling the night of the Buster Douglass fight, Tyson's first loss. Vegas gave Douglass almost zero chance to win, but I just felt really nervous for some reason. Then my worse fear was realized--Tyson lost. Such a pitiful waste of talent. Boxing has not been the same without its flagbearer.

@@Faerwing66 I agree with you totally. Tyson's first fight after Spinks was without Rooney and he was so sloppy against Bruno. So sloppy that he got rocked in the first round and was so off balance winging one punch bombs that I was like oh crap he is going to lose if not this fight very soon. Sure enough it happened two fights later. I truly believe that if Mike had stayed disciplined and kept Rooney he would of remained champion for at least another 3 years and if he was to lose it wouldn't of been by knock out but by close decision as Mike was no easy target to hit with his crouching, head bobbing, footwork, and jabbing his way in to work the body and throw combinations.
