There’s something about this film that’s just so gorgeously dark & operatic, I can’t help but love every second of it. The Dark Knight is probably my favourite Batman movie, but this one does come very close.

I love Batman Returns. One of the most beautifully stylish and gothic superhero films of all time. Michael Keaton continues doing a really good job as Batman, while Danny DeVito's Penguin, Michelle Pfieffer's Catwoman and Christopher Walken's Max Shreck all give scene stealing performances.

Yep. The real treat (for me) was watching DeVito, Pfeiffer and Walken chew the scenery in this one. This movie was mainly about the villains and Burton's stylized vision of Gotham.

Batman Returns is my favorite Batman movie of all time and after 30 years, it still holds up. I love the darker tone in this movie. We got to see more of Keaton's Batman and the villains are better and Danny Elfman's music is far better and superior.

I only watched the Burton movies all the way through a couple of years ago . I was born the year Batman Returns came out . I love the bleakness of this movie and think it is better than the 1989 film . I love Michelle Pfieffer as Catwoman and Danny Devito as The Penguin . I love the grotesque nature of the aesethic of the Gotham in this film. Also I can't wait for your reviews of Batman Forever and Batman and Robin (which will be comedy gold entertainment more so than the movie itself) . Starting gearing up for those ice puns everybody.

I think The Dark Knight is the best Batman movie (havent seen The Batman), but Batman Returns is definitely my favourite. It's so beautifully operatic, and is very much a dark fairytale. The Christmas atmosphere is melancholic and gives the movie so much more substance. Pfeiffer, DeVito, Walken and Keaton absolutely smash their performances out of the park. I will eternally love this movie

Literally has nothing to do with the comics, which would be cool if it wasn’t a so over the top. Lmao L

McDonald's refused to sell any of their toys regarding a fill with a PG-13 rating.
Even kids said that it was a scary movie, due to the violence.

I would put this one on par with Batman 89. Like Batman 89, the villains are very good, the score is still fantastic, and the aesthetics look very cool. But Tim Burton still doesn’t seem interested in the character of Batman or Bruce Wayne. Batman seems a lot more like is a reactionary character instead of proactively being in the story. Beyond that, the story here doesn’t fully work. Penguin gets out of the sewer in the first act, he wants to become mayor in the second act, and he wants to kill all of the first born sons of Gotham in the third act. That’s too much to put in a two hour movie. Much like Batman 1989, I like this movie enough, but it’s not a favorite of mine.

I was 19 when Batman Returns came out. Saw it 6 times over a few weeks. I was myself a goth artist (as Tim Burton is) so, to me, this film cinematically is gorgeous imo. It's so Tim Burton 🦇. Batman '89 was hugely influencial on my 16 y/o self and this sequel galvanised my own goth visions and sense of isolation.
It's a bit too much of a cartoon in moments, it went dark I wish it went even darker. It turned McDonald's off so that pleases me too.

I can only speak for myself but before the 1989 batman I was a huge fan of the 60s TV show, and what Burton did with the first movie was to bring that tv show to live in a dark and adult way that blew my mind. And who where the 2 biggest villains in that show? The joker and the pinguin! So after seeing Nicholson kill it in the first movie it was logical that the penguin would face batman in a much bigger and darker sequel!
I guess what I'm trying to say is that the first two batman movies where all I was expected from a 60s batman fan watching his favorite superhero come to life in the most amazing way I could ever imagine!!...thank you Burton for making my childhood awesome!!

As someone who never read comic books and was born in 1981, this duo of movies was my introduction to Batman. They created my prototypes for who Batman, Joker, Catwoman and Penguin were supposed to be. I found this movie terrifying when I first saw it (could barely watch the penguin sewer scenes) but I loved it nonetheless. I can’t say I’ve rewatched either movie in the last dozen years as I rather keep them scrutiny-proof in my nostalgia bubble, but I still consider them among my favorite Batman movies. I saw this film for the first time last week Friday. And while it does flow smoothly, and doesn't have choppy editing, as well as being just better constructed overall, something just didn't sit right with me. I just couldn't know what. I didn't think the movie was bad, but it wasn't fully good. And it's interesting that you said it feels at arm's length from you, cuz that was the words I was looking for. Also, the weird Tim Burton things are just not for me. Maybe if this wasn't a Batman film, I'd like it more, but when I can clearly see that the freaky weirdos in the movie are Batman, Catwoman, and Penguin, it doesn't sit right with me. Overall, while neither Burton film is super high in my personal list, I'd much rather watch a choppy Batman film, than a weird uncomfortable Tim Burton film with a character that looks like Batman.
And yes, everyone who praised this and Batman 89, and was ranting on Batfleck mowing guys down in BvS, is a hypocrite.

I have this very specific memory of renting this on video, watching it with my family. I had seen it theaters and loved it, and was excited for mom and dad to watch it with me and my brothers. My Dad was near 40, NOT the target audience, and he was very quiet through the movie. And about 2/3 thru it, I turned and asked him what he thought so far. He finally spoke, after chuckling first, and said, "Honestly? I think it's really stupid."
Hard to describe, but somehow him saying that changed my perspective of the film, hearing what an "adult" thought. Now I'm 42, and I completely understand! As an adult, I usually just don't vibe with Tim Burton. Like a Kubrick or a Rob Zombie, there's a distinct and recognizable style, but it just usually isn't for me. (Maybe exceptions would be Big Fish, and for some reason, Sleepy Hollow and Miss Perigrine)
But since I don't think I've watched this in almost 30 years, might be time to see if the nostalgia goggles are working!

As we were studying the Elfman soundtrack to Batman Returns for music, I asked for a copy of the dvd for Christmas, and honestly I kinda loved it. I do prefer Batman ‘89 (mainly because of Jack Nicholson) but I found this film highly entertaining.

    My Thoughts
    Pros+
    - The performances of the cast (especially Pfeiffer & Keaton)
    - Danny Elfman's score is just as good as his first Batman score
    - Catwoman's character arc
    - Seeing Christopher Walken in a Batman movie was a lot of fun
    - The costumes were all great
    - The romance between Batman and Catwoman was very good
    Cons-
    - Batman gets very overshadowed by both The Penguin, Catwoman and Max Schreck
    - The Penguin is written to be both a sad sympathetic loner like Edward Scissorhand and a grotesque child murdering monster like Freddy Kruger at the same time
    - All of Batman's kills in this movie are very extreme
    - The movie has a bunch of plot points that goes nowhere
    - The movie is very horny (The Catwoman parts I can accept, but not The Penguin grabbing someone's boobs)
    - Tim Burton had a little too much creative control with this movie in my opinion
    - The tone for this movie is very dark and cartoonish at the same time
    - The part where Batman records The Penguin during the Batmobile scene only to use it later during The Penguin's mayor speech is one of the most forced and unnatural things I've seen in a superhero movie
    - One of the least rewatchable Batman movies in my opinion
Overall: This movie is a decent Tim Burton movie, but a bad Batman movie. It feels less like a Batman movie and more like a typical Tim Burton movie with characters and locations from the Batman series. It has parts that I really like, but also some parts I don't really like. (6/10)

I didn't grow up with this film but I found it later and really enjoyed it's really dark and kinda depressing tone throughout, pair that with my love for Tim Burton's Batman adaptation already and this makes for one of my favorite, if not my favorite, Batman movies.

Just finished this one for the first time tonight too, WAY BETTER than the 1st one, plot and characters are coincided with each other and Michelle and DeVito just kill it, it’s just all around more engaging

I actually watched this in the theater back in the fall of 1992 but I barely remember what happened in it so I decided I didn’t like it, I finally rented it on video a few years later and was like yeah this is a good film. This was also my first movie to see Christopher Walker in. To this day I still try to intimidate his voice. As the far as the movie goes I could never really figure The Penguin out as far as what his plan was. First he tells Max Shreck that he wants to ascend into society and find out who he really is and then decides to run for Mayor and then we later find out he wants to frame Batman and Batman records him talking evil during the Batmobile scene and then later it is played at the press conference. So truth be told to this day I don’t know what Penguin really wanted. Sean one thing you mentioned was that there were no police present during the final part of the movie, I also notice that Batman was seen as kidnapping The Ice Princess and then killing her and we never find out if his name cleared or not. As I’m sure everyone knows this movie was thought to be so dark that they kinda rebooted the series three years later with a new director and a new Actor playing Batman. Can’t wait to see your reviews for those two films directed by Joel Schumacher.

I thought for sure Sean would hate this movie due to the logic of ego committing patricide in gotg 2 in that review. Compare this to penguins plan, I thought he would dislike this movie. This review surprised me.

When I was growing up, Batman Returns was one of those movies I was not allowed to watch at the time. And every time I watch it, I watch Returns for the sake of Batman. Danny DeVito was a good choice for Penguin and he was insane!!! Michelle Pfeiffer was not my first choice as Catwoman in this movie. I understand that Tim Burton took the reigns and made Batman his own way in his style and I appreciate it.

Tim Burton's Batman Movies are more of an experience than a narrative...Burton doesn't seem interested in telling a conventional story, but more a visual one...It's like any sort of plot or structure gets in the way of his vision, he's of the philosophy of "Show, don't tell". He even stated in one of his commentaries that he would "love to make a picture with absolutely NO dialogue"

I was 11 in 1992 when this came out..I too followed production on this like you..I remember to this day a story that appeared in the national enquirer about this movie that Fred savage was going to be Robin. Joker penguin catwoman and two face were going to be in it and batman was going to fly them in to space with the bat wing at the end and then go save a pregnant Vicky vale who then gives birth and the baby has pointy bat ears like their dad... I was 10 reading that and it was the best thing I ever read....then I saw this movie...I remember not liking this when I first saw it..probably because I didn't really understand the plot and the innuendos. I remember being disappointed that batman was barely in it and the villains took center stage..exactly what cody leach says about these movies..well I thought that 30 years ago too. I have grown to like it a little more over the years but in all reality the 80s and 90s batman movies are nothing but nostalgia bait for guys our age. These movies would not play well to audiences if released in 2022

I love this film. I commented on your 89 review that Michael Keaton is my favorite Batman. I acknowledge your criticisms. Both films have flaws but I find them more enjoyable than the Nolan movies. The Dark Knight is a masterpiece but I find Batman Begins dull and quite honestly I haven't even seen The Dark Knight Rises in its entirety. Haven't been able to get into it. Christian Bale is a great actor but I find him dull as Batman.

I remember this being in 2 movie theaters at my local mall, thinking at that time "Oh my god! Two movie theaters!". We saw it as a family to a sold out crowd, and I do recall many groans, and audience members saying "What?....". I was sorely disappointed when the film ended, and didn't know what to make of the film. It was a suckie summer for sequels too. This film, Lethal Weapon 3, and Alien 3, all disappointments! But revisiting Returns, I appreciate it more as this weird movie that happens to have Batman in it. Keaton and Pheiffers chemistry, Danny DaVeto's grotesque performance, and the ser designs are what's outstanding here. It's not a true sequel to the 1989 film. If you know that going in, you'll be okay. But if you were 10 years old, like I was at that time, I was truly perplexed when the film ended. Returns is still a head scratcher for me.

Personally I never minded the idea that Batman killed in those films, especially considering his origins, I feel in terms of going for how Batman was originally going to be when he first began it actually shows that really well, but for sure Modern Batman is more preferred these days.

I grew up with the Burton/Schumacher movies. Might seem blaspemous, but "Returns" is a Batman movie I genuinely have come to dislike more and more with each viewing. There are definitely lots of things I like about it (namely Michelle Pfeiffer's performance as Catwoman), but as a Batman movie, it just feels *too* Tim Burton-y. It makes for a cool, dark fairy tale.... but it just doesn't sit well with what I think of Batman. That's just me though.
