hell killer croc would have fit in perfectly in this story, make him an obscure mob boss who hides out in the old zoo because of his appearance, he manipulates max and garners sympathy from the people via manipulation while robbing them blind and plotting to destroy the city that rejected him when he was born, ignoring his origin slightly for movie purposes but still
I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Burton originally intended to use Killer Croc, but executive meddling forced him to include the Penguin purely because they wanted a more well-known villain as the antagonist. That being said I think DeVito did do a great job given what he had to work with.
Long time fan from the big site days, love and miss the crossovers, going to watch FB and Linkara next Thanks for the smiles, you bring joy to so many people !
The part where he glides on his bat shaped glider over the people being terrorized by bats is kind of funny. I mean, watching this happen would be hysterical. Lady falls onto the switch, unleashing a shitload of bats, and as everyone freaks out and panics, batman flies above them, like he's their king or something. Imagine switching him out with someone completely insane, shouting obscenities and telling his children, the bats, to feed
In Tim Burton’s defence you only showed his modern films, the first ones he made were dark and light, scary but also charming, and show how death is ok and the afterlife can be quirky and kind of fun. That’s a message families need more these days, it’s another way of thinking that I love.
Points taken, yet i still like this movie, simply because i found it entertaining. Penguin might have been off from the original comics but Danny DeVito was so entertaining in this role that i don't care. What bad can you say about Christopher Walken as an evil business man. Batman using stupid gadgets to thwart the villains' plans? Yes, because we have NEVER seen that before. Does Batman always has to have something deep to contemplate over? Can't he just be Batman sometimes without some deeper thoughts? The way i understood it, the zoo was closed and abandoned, leaving the penguins to roam free, also in the sewers. You actually CAN have your villain be sinister and tragic at the same time. Loki (MCU), Lord Shen (Kung Fu Panda 2), Clyde Shelton (Law Abiding Citizen), Twoface (The Dark Knight),.... I don't mind Burton's dark tone. However if you don't like it, there is not much to persuade you. I always thought Batman's "kills" to be cartoonish. Like the guy with the bomb or the burning flame-blower were not actually dead but really messed up. Wasn't it always some mystery, if Catwoman actually WAS revived through supernatural powers or just survived? I like how the movie never makes that clear and always keeps you guessing if it was supernatural or not. Half of what makes Batman interesting are his villains. Therefore i don't mind if he has less screentime when three villains are doing interesting stuff. Granted, the story was a bit of a mess. Again, three villains and a hero with a romance to one of them to juggle. The movie was so entertaining overall that i didn't mind.
Half of what makes Batman interesting IS his villains but the other half is Batman himself and I'm kind of on Bennet's side on this. I'm offended that Burton does seem to discard Batman as much less interesting than his villains. Batman is one of my favourite superheroes because he has a deep and complex psychology, the trauma he carries about his parents and which he's never come to terms with, his obsession with delivering justice himself and the extreme lengths he's often willing to go to for it, lengths that a lot of other heroes wouldn't go to and that often put him at odds with more morally strict heroes like Superman. Batman's 'no killing' rule is important to his character not because it shows how heroic he is but rather how morally grey he is. It means that he will do anything - lie, deceive, torture - and stop short only at killing. The fact that Burton has him randomly and remorselessly killing people shows that he doesn't understand the character at all. He doesn't understand that Batman as a story isn't interesting because of its villains but rather is interesting because of the interactions between the villains and hero. The villains often show how complex and flawed Batman actually is. It's telling that some of his significant relationships have been with villains: Talia Al ghul gave him a son and he's always shared a chemistry with Catwoman because it can be argued that he feels an affinity with her unlike say Superman and it is galling that Burton missed all of that because he wanted to as Bennet says, create his own freakshow. That's not to say I hate the movie, I enjoy aspects of it such as Catwoman. While I have issues with her origin, i do love Pfeiffer's portrayal of her.
I feel Batman Returns is underrated. Yeah it's dark and messed up but I actually DO think that's the best part about it, plus I kind of like the Penguin's origin story, oh and Christopher Walken is terrific as usual.
When I first watched it I laughed so much and still almost cried at some times. It is so freakishly over the top in its surreal, dark grittiness that I don't care if the story is also stupidly over the top and has many flaws when you start to think about it. It works within this crazy dark world. Penguins with rockets on their backs! It's so stupid! It's so dark. I love it.
I love this movie. I do understand why some people hate it but that so MANY people hate it is a bit of a shock. Granded, Batman Returns was the first Batman film I've ever seen so that might affect to my judgement but still, even how critically I try to watch it these days I still like the hell out of it. :)
I think Linkara’s assessment of the film’s villains is my favorite take that elevates Bruce as a character in this film: The villains are a piece of him personified. Penguin is the tragedy. Shreck is the man. Selina is the mask. All three make up parts of Bruce, the Penguin being the consuming anguish of one’s past, Shreck being a person of wealth that abuses his power for his own gain (something arguable seeing as he uses his family’s wealth to fund his crusade as Batman), and Selina the struggle between one life and the other. It’s almost as if the movie is Bruce being stuck alone with himself, which is fitting considering how the film starts. It’s not a perfect film by any means and I do prefer Batman 89’ overall, but I can’t deny that there are some fascinating ideas at play with some good performances and memorable moments to back up what I think to be a pretty good CBM.
With that in mind, it makes the film a lot better. But the problem remains that they don't give Bruce much to do, aside from just being Batman when it is needed. He's pretty much a supporting character in his own movie, which is the main problem I have with the film.
I know it's an old review, but it felt so good to hear Sage express exactly the same opinion I have of Tim Burton at the beggining, right down to every con I think when I think of Burton.
Tim Burton is kinda like Scott Cawthon. Each have a unique style and can be very creative. but their styles and creativeness loses its taste after an over exposure of it
I was never a fan of this movie, either. And I love dark movies. The problem is that this movie isn't consistent with its tone, it tries to overplay its villains in the most over-the-top way and at the same time tries to make The Penguin sympathetic, the results being more comical than anything else. There are worse Burton movies out there, but I think that he's done much better than this.
The original 1989 Batman is one of my personal favorite movies of all time. Batman Returns, while not one of my favorites, I personally really enjoy as a film. I like how gritty the film is. I like the depressing atmosphere and the bitter sweet ending. Is it perfect. Not in the slightest but I enjoy it nonetheless. Kind of a guilty pleasure.
I always thought Batman Forever was underrated, thanks to B&R's awfulness overshadowing it. Also, much of the flaws of the Schumacher movies can be blamed on witless studio executives
Batman Forever is really sad, because it does have a lot of good stuff going for it when it comes to Bruce and Dick. Unfortunately it's bogged down (I think) by how cartoony it's villains are.
yeah, especially considering how they cocked up two-face. they turned a morally complex, psychologically damaged ADA-turned-gangster into just another lame joker-lite.
I've heard that was partly Tommy Lee Jones fault. He's always considered comic book movies as trash and supposedly he refused to take the part seriously and thus played it like a joke.
shadowspider9 another big part of it was Jones' annoyance at Carey, feeling like he was constantly over the top to steal the show from everyone else. To keep himself from getting overshadowed, Jones hammed it up, thinking what he was doing was the same as Carey's supposed overacting, in his mind he was just doing what he had to to keep up. Or so I've heard.
I don't like this movie. It's filled with so many subplots that it's hard to tell who the villain really is, the tone is all over the place, and Batman is barely in it.
In defense of the Catwoman origin, people who develop multiple personality disorder like Selina Kyle have been known to spontaneously learn things with new personas they couldn't do before, like speak a different language, so I guess learning kung fu out of nowhere isn't THAT unrealistic...not defending surviving the 100 story free fall though!
Multiple personality disorder is pretty much phases out of psychiatry as it is not a "true" diagnosis. It is basically fake or dependant on other psychiatric disorders. And no...they can not speak other languages or stuff like that. That is completely mumbo jumbo and has no connection to reality whatsoever. The diagnosis is basically just a movie myth that for a short while was used by unprofessional psychiatrists to boost their careers. /Karl Anderson, psychiatry nurse
karl Andersson I remember a class I took to get my psych degree where the professor said mpd is debated by professionals as either stemming from another diagnosis or a sign of bad acting.
I consider movies such as Torque, Punisher: War Zone, Mission: Impossible 2, The Predator, Hitman, The Hurricane Heist, and the Transformers movies guilty pleasures.
I think FB really nailed why the movie doesn't work at it's core - as much as I love Danny DeVito as Penguin, something about his character just always felt wrong and I couldn't quite place why exactly. On repeat viewings, I do keep wanting to sympathize with him (like most of Burton's outcasts) even as the movie insists he is irredeemably bad. The more I think about it, the more I conclude that he would've been much better as an original character in a wholly different film - one where he doesn't *have* to be a villain with zany megalomaniacal murder schemes who fights a masked hero. (I did want to smack Sage throughout the whole video, though.)

While this isn't anything near the level of batman(1989) I wouldn't consider it a bad movie, in fact I don't consider batman forever a bad movie either(it's decent) but don't worry I still hate batman and Robin.
I think this movie suffers from having ideas that aren't nearly flesh out enough, as it's constantly being overshadowed by visuals, which for the most part looks is really good.
DarkHeroesForever agreed and it had bad villain choice, if they wanted a tragic villain who lives in the sewers, they should've gone with killer croc, think about a deformed baby going in the sewers, but the alligators just thinks it's one of them because of croc's skin.
I personally don't mind if they change a character from the source material, but don't do it as an excuse just to make him look grotesque, while also not going deeper into it.
Asuka Langley Soryu don’t forget stuffing in as many villains as possible, like I get penguin being there, Max I guess is alright, but catwoman has no business being in this movie.
Storytelling has always been a weakness for Tim Burton and the messy script doesn't help [the 'Penguin running for major plot feels like a unnecessary cul de sac]. I appreciate this has a cult following now a days but the Nolan films are far more my cup of tea.
I honestly don't understand the hate Hudson Hawk gets. Maybe I'm alone in this but it hits my sense of humor spot on. Friends and I still quote it to each other to this day
Say what you will about this movie: I use it when defending *Suicide Squad* by pointing out Max Shreck's actions in the climax. In NO way was he a good man; But him offering himself in the place of Chip earned him some respect from me. Bottom line: *Evil people can have loved ones, too. Doesn't change who they are or what they did.*
ILL TAKE SUICIDE SQUAD OVER THIS ANYDAY. Penguin is a tragic disgusting character to look at and selina is just waaaay too psychotic to be Bruce's love interest. Margot Robbie's waaay more entertaining to look at as Harley and thank god for that.
9:01 Yeah, in the comics (except in his first appearances), but in The Burton movie, he did kill, and it's amazing, and yes, I go against him, killing but if it fits the version I'm already with it still a little angry but if it's fine depending on how he's been characterised by the director/writers
The funniest thing about this film is that Christopher Walken's character (whose name is similar to Shrek, which is hilarious) is an OC, as in, not on the comics at all, he's a fabrication for this movie.
Burton's Batman films had a surreal, gothic atmosphere. It's not supposed to be 'dark' and 'gritty. Since is does not take place in our reality, I don't nitpick or delve on some of the plot points.
Personally I'm with Film Brain... in a way. This movie feels disappointing to me because it failed to execute on a lot of things that it tried to, which would have been amazing IMO if they worked. (Well, that and make Penguin Killer Croc, may as well with Schreck being the main villain anyway, and make him ten times more tragic and half as ridiculous.)
Years late, but since the zoo is clearly abandoned and in disrepair, the sewer penguins are logically former zoo penguins who migrated to the sewer as the building crumbled. Though that invites the question about what kind of monster abandons penguins (and likely other animals) as they close and abandon the zoo?! And why is Gotham's infrastructure so bad that the zoo wasn't reclaimed and the sewer system maintained?!
I used to like Batman Returns but I got sick of watching it but Batman 89 and The Dark Knight 2009 are great movies but Danny DeVito is excellent as penguin
Because Batman Returns is my all time favorite Batman movie I disagree with both FilmBrain and Bennett. Then again it helps that I know about golden age Batman so I accept things like Batman killing. Besides Burton might not understand Batman but he sure as hell understands Batman more than Nolan does.
I disagree. That's like dismissing opinions just because you'd rather plug your ears and ignore any naysayers rather than actually listen to actual criticism. And I hate people who act like that.
***** And it's people like you that are call douche bags. Hell voice actor have to give a performance using *only* their voices; they don't have facial expression and body movement
Awesome that Pee Wee Herman came back in the television series Gotham as cobblepot's father once again! Creating although not a direct connect but definitely a base point for the DC Cinematic Universe just like Marvel having Agents of Shield wtf
14:24 - 14:40 😭THANK YOU, BENNET THE SAGE!!! THANK YOOOOOU!!! 😭 Yeah, I love everything Batman, but Returns was never one of my favorites. Everything they said about it is true. What the movie should've been is this: Millionaire philanthropist and mogul, Max Shreck, is running for mayor of Gotham. One night one of his penthouses is robbed by the fearless new thief known as Catwoman. Meanwhile, Batman is still stopping crime every night on the streets of Gotham, but lately average thugs have been getting more brazen. It gets so bad that even children are being kidnapped and killed. Batman desperately tries to get to the bottom of this, but the mastermind behind the kidnappings is elusive. One day, disgraced ex-socialite, Oswald Cobblepott, throws his top hat in the ring against Shreck in the election. Batman knows Cobblepott as the vicious villain known as The Penguin, but he technically can't prove it to the public or the police. Eventually, Batman crosses paths with Catwoman and Bruce Wayne meets Selina Kyle. A rivalry/romance develops. The night after Shreck's baby is kidnapped, Catwoman hits another one of Shreck's penthouses only to be intercepted by Batman who accuses her of kidnapping Shreck's child, assuming Penguin hired her to do it to get him to drop out of the election. She denies it and they fight, swing, and jump from building to building until Batman has her cornered. She then attempts to flirt her way out of the situation and the way she does it makes Batman realize who she really is. Stunned by this revelation, he lets his guard down allowing for Selina to escape. Selina and Catwoman disappear from Gotham and Max Shreck is elected mayor. He accepts with a heavy heart and hopes that the police will find his baby. Batman intensifies his search for the missing child, and hunts down the Penguin. Not only does he rescue the baby from the Penguin, but he also thwarts an attempt on Shreck's life as well. However, in doing so he learns information that helps him piece everything together. When Batman returns Shreck's baby to him he confronts him about his part in orchestrating many of the child kidnappings. He accuses Shreck of hiring criminals to kidnap the children of the wealthy so he could fund his campaign since his businesses had begun to hemorrhage money. Shreck admits to all of it as he pulls out a gun and shoots at Batman. Batman dodges and disarms Shreck. Shreck is arrested after Batman delivers the recording of his confession to the police and his deputy mayor takes his place. The movie ends with Batman overlooking the city perched on a gargoyle and Catwoman perched on another building watching him.

Bad movie? You call a movie with great performances, art direction and cinematography bad? You are sooo wrong. And here are some answers to your nitpicks: 1) Wayne is sitting there, doing nothing, because he has nothing else to do, Batman is all he is now, lost, stuck in a loop of violence. 2) They changed Penguin and Catwoman, because all three villains are supposed to represent different sides of Batman/Wayne (monster, vigilante and powerful mogul) Plus original Penguin is a boring character lacking any depth. 3) Yes, Bruce Wayne, a vigilante who has killed tells Selina about justice, because he knows where revenge leads and doesn't want her to end up like him. 4) Yes, the climax is cruel and bitter, because it supposed to be. This movie is about failure, about people who unable to change. You know like real people in real life! 5) It is a Batman movie. Same way Schumacher's movies are Batman movies, and Nolan's movies are Batman movies. Ever heard about creative license? Did you know that there are same amount of nitpicks about Nolan's Dark Knight? Is that a bad movie? Nope.
@@drewmarron7578 I watched it, and it's just a bunch of nitpicks, that I addressed in my first comment. Read it. I can nitpick Nolan trilogy like this and make those movies look like worst thing ever. This is a bad shallow critique video made for shits and giggles.
I tried watching this not long ago and it DID NOT age well. Aside from some of the cringey performances, the fact that the movie had a ton of plots and couldn't decide what it wanted to do made me appreciate Batman Begins years later! Don't get me wrong, it was no Batman and Robin but, it wasn't THAT MUCH better!
@Brandon Brooks LOL piss off you laughably clueless moron man-child. There's literally *nothing* resembling this incoherent character-destroying abortion in any era of Batman comics. When exactly did the Humpty Dumpty version of The Penguin have a circus gang that lived in the sewers with penguins that had fuckin rockets on their backs? LOL christ almighty, this shyte genuinely sounds like a Saturday Night Live parody. Meanwhile Batman and Robin is a pitch-perfect accurate version of the *entire Silver Age* of Batman comics.
I probably would've liked the casting a bit more if the Penguin was written as an exaggerated mobster caricature instead of the gothic freakshow Burton written him as.
It always annoyed me that the Red Triangle Gang worked for the Penguin, instead of the Joker in the first movie. Why put so much emphasis on clown/circus goons when that has nothing to do with the Penguin? And it was weird that the movie kept referring to them as an "underground crime gang" like they were the mafia or something. It would have made more sense if Penguin's goons WERE akin to the mafia, rather than silly circus freaks.
I agree the Penguin should of been the main villain in the first film and Joker in the sequel as it would of made better sense but still enjoyed Batman 89 and Returns.
Question: If Penguin's plan is to kidnap and kill all first borns, why does he try to take Chip, but doesn't bother with Bruce Wayne? He is technically a first born. I agree with Bennett. Crock would've been a much better fit for the movie.
Hat Man he wanted him more as revenge than anything, also notice Penguin and Bruce Wayne have zero interactions in the film which is probably why he was never on his radar.
FINALLY SOMEBODY SAID IT LIKE IT IS!!!!!! THAT'S NOT THE PENGUIN!!!!!! AND THE CATSUIT HAS STITCHES???!!!!??????? KILLER CLOWNS????????!!!!????? IT STINKS!!!!! PART 1 WAS BETTER!!!!!!
Batman Returns is 30 years old!!! Shame i didn't see it in theaters but it did make $162.83 million I did catch it later on vhs Tim Burton did his own thing creatively wanting nothing to do with the 1989 movie Love Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman and Danny Devito as Penguin, Pfeiffer still has that infamous whip to this day and she set the tone for future actresses to play the part going against injustice either men or women Many considered it too dark; a lot of people couldnt get on board with the overly depressing penguin and the cat woman Even the happy meal toy makers panicked by parents' reactions of the movie being demented and unpleasant for kids Since then, people haven't really known what to make of this film Naturally, it has its fans and its haters, but most people put it in the "I don't want to think about it because I don't know what to think about it" category It's a good movie and nostalgia critic says it is silly and all over the place, but it's also visually stunning, well-acted, and hilariously demented Lots of flaws are around the Penguin character it just needed to be less clumsy about it Burton focuses as much on what unites the trio as what divides them, specifically the power they find behind their assumed identities even if all they can't be saved A weird experiment he admits with it feeling overly dark but he embraces keeping Batman weird There are elements of German Expressionism that seep through the stylistic flourish Plus it's important to acknowledge that Reeves' "The Batman," and some aspects of Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" trilogy, has been greatly influenced by Burton's vision, which is undeniably important to understanding Batman as a character I'm glad the movie overcame reports of behind-the-scenes creative disputes and mixed critical and fan response It's really cool too that Michael Keaton is reprising his role for The Flash movie and Batgirl
This movie is amazing imo. It's very creative and for coming out in 92 I was very impressed then and i still am. This movie was ahead of it's time. This is burtons best movie for sure and maybe even the best batman film of all time too.
@Brandon Brooks Because every comment on this video is "dis movie is awesome, ur rong" without giving any reasons as to why. And it really annoys me for how overly white knighted this movie it gets. I get that it's nostalgic for some people, but I don't think it holds up that well, in my opinion.
I must admit that this plot was a mess, but according to style, grotesqly mixing dark with camp, I love this movie so much. All that Sage finds wrong with this movie, thats advantage for me!
Now to be fair, Batman *is* the least interesting thing in almost anything he's in and giving his movies to the rogues' gallery is not a bad idea. Execution-wise this isn't well done in Returns, but Burton wasn't wrong to try it. Also, fuck it, Batman not killing people in most of the well-regarded runs of the comic was *always* an attempt to make the best of a bad situation with the Comics Code. Sure, it lead to one of the funniest scenes in Hitman, but eh. Again, who cares, cool villains is sorta the one strong point of anything Batman. Batman's sorta just the cipher. The viewpoint character, the guy who has to investigate and try to avenge the crimes so we can see the world his enemies inhabit. He's the Kenshiro. You can't make Fist of the North Star be *about* Kenshiro... And neither does it matter overly much if his particular brand of stoicism gets handled differently.
The set looks cheap, it's just the town square and that's it, where's the rest of Gotham city? The first movie had some mat paintings at least. The production was obviously rushed through with no other sets built but the town square, that's why every other scene is set there. In terms of quality I think it goes 1, 3, 2, 4 that's not counting the new ones obviously.
They are PEARLS isn't it? Batman Returns, Nightmare Before Christmas, Eyes Wide Shut.. unintentionally (or intentionally) casting this creepy shadow over Christmas. I love it.
Huge fan Film Brain, unfortunately tho, by what it seems Bennett is not a fan of cinematography, or art for that matter. He kind of drops the video dead to me. His criticisms are out out context, he has this opposition towards "Point of View" and "Angle" and I don't think he has ever visited a museum. If you like comics/art, it is not just about the writing, but by what you see. Benett makes fun of Walken's wig? Are you serious? I bet he despises Hitchcock, Orson Welles, or even frigin German Expressionism because they're too "artsy" and "stylized". At least they had a personality and were not robots.
On one hand I agree with sage burtons last few films have been the exact same film with a dark moody style with Johnny depp helabottom carter ( sorry I can't spell her name) and like sage I don't like the apes remake Alice or Charlie and the chocolate factory but on the other hand film brain makes a good point by pointing out there are some good burton films like scissor hands big fish Sweeney Todd and batman to me burton is a 2 sided coin he's got one side and one bad side and I gotta say I'm not looking forward to him remaking dumbo
Billy Dee Williams asked for a higher salary for the sequel which they didn't want to do. Catwoman shocking Shreck in the face was how Dent would have turned into Two Face.
I don't think it's fair to stereotype Tim Burton. Not only was he making these films long before anyone had even heard of Hot Topic, but his first film, PEE-WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE, is actually quite colorful and does not fit all the usual Burton clichés.
I liked the movie and I don't mind the mix of sillines and dark tone since I was never able to take dark comic book movies seriously to begin with. That doesn't mean that I dislike dark comic book movies, it just means I like them in a way Burton, Nolan and Snyder did not intent me to. Also it's live action and Bennet hates it, that's proof that it's a great movie, complete, indisputable, objective proof I I ever saw it.
Also Their was a batman. The animated series episode called Birds of a Feather that did something with the penguin. Made him sympathetic, but later on, he goes back being a villian.

I love it.
@Caesarslegion1 who put you on the planet?
@@palilaneona6821 Yep, I definitely think Doctor Evil was inspired by that with the sharks.
I love this movie. I do understand why some people hate it but that so MANY people hate it is a bit of a shock. Granded, Batman Returns was the first Batman film I've ever seen so that might affect to my judgement but still, even how critically I try to watch it these days I still like the hell out of it. :)
BTW I always thought that the circus gang were some Joker fanatics who formed after his death. You know, like "The Jokers" in Batman Beyond.
Valkoinenkoira I get it.
While I personally dislike the movie, I can see why people may like it.
I love this movie, despite it's flaws.
This movie was awesome. As was the previous one.
Batman Returns was my favorite movie.I had it on vhs and was always having it play while I was doing random staff
I think Linkara’s assessment of the film’s villains is my favorite take that elevates Bruce as a character in this film:
The villains are a piece of him personified.
6:31 Maybe the penguins escape the zoo, and decided to live in the sewers as they had no where to go back home.
I always imagined that the zoo went out of business and was abandoned and the penguins simply remained.
I know it's an old review, but it felt so good to hear Sage express exactly the same opinion I have of Tim Burton at the beggining, right down to every con I think when I think of Burton.
you think they know the movie was SUPPOSED to show that a lot of batman victories are more "bitter sweet" than "Happily ever after"?
Tim Burton is kinda like Scott Cawthon. Each have a unique style and can be very creative. but their styles and creativeness loses its taste after an over exposure of it
Truer words have never been spoken
Except Scott Cawthon is a genius whereas Burton was a genius but is now a talentless hack.
I'm not into Tim Burton movies all that much, really.
I'd compare Burton to Black Veil Brides. Something that's dark and gothic for the sake of it.
At least Burton isn’t a victim of cancel culture (rightfully so)
I was never a fan of this movie, either.
It may be a bad Batman movie, but it's a good Tim Burton movie.
The Gotham tv show has the Best Penguin don't @ me
I won't at you. You're right
I think the 1989 Batman movie is much better than its sequels.
i agree. 1989's batman was good enough.
The best Batman movie ever made.
There is only 1 sequel. Batman Returns.
Exactly, totally agree.
yeah, especially considering how they cocked up two-face. they turned a morally complex, psychologically damaged ADA-turned-gangster into just another lame joker-lite.
Zak Kizer that makes sense actually
karl Andersson I don’t believe you’re an actual nurse😑
And how does Catwoman have DID anyway? I've never heard that.
If this is bad, then I consider this a guilty pleasure
+John Smith Fair enough, I consider X-Men Origins: Wolverine to be a guilty pleasure.
+DarkHeroesForever Same here.I also consider Spider-Man 3,Amazing Spider-Man 2,I,Frankenstein,The Mummy Returns and Van Helsing guilty pleasures.
I find The Room a guilty pleasure.
I consider movies such as Torque, Punisher: War Zone, Mission: Impossible 2, The Predator, Hitman, The Hurricane Heist, and the Transformers movies guilty pleasures.
same, i mean come on, any movie with Christopher Walkin has to be enjoyably bad with him in it
The Burton Batman films influenced the Batman Animated Series . And this movie still has the best Catwoman on film.
13:25 The reason that Batman is not in much is because this movie is more about the villains then the hero

DarkHeroesForever agreed, plus sometimes changing from the comics can be WAY too much, it's what ruined the dark knight rises bane for me.
Mis-tah J Good point. At least he was more faithful compare to the what we saw in Batman & Robin.
Bad movie? Batman Returns is a master piece. Ahead of it's time.
Yes, because tonal whiplash, creepy makeup, and having a million random subplots are key to making a masterpiece.
Asuka Langley Soryu don’t forget stuffing in as many villains as possible, like I get penguin being there, Max I guess is alright, but catwoman has no business being in this movie.
@Brandon Brooks Yeah, and you don't have to like my opinion. Just like how I don't have to like this movie.
Did Bennett just say that Batman Forever is better than Batman Returns? Was he high?
D Jordan18 no.
No, it's called having an opinion.
Everyone's reaction to this movie: What the hell was that?
This is pretty much the reaction of majority of the comment section when reacting to this review.
I Loved Batman Returns Fuck Bennet his opinion is BullShit
But Suicide Squad is still as shitty as Batman Forever.
A character's looks don't matter. And how does what a character looks like make them entertaining? You seem a tad shallow.
Actually I liked that movie
Wish someone would've told the writers of Steven Universe that.
Sitting in a dark room, he's trying to reenact Fant4stic.
Anyway, he was already killing the original.
9:01 Yeah, in the comics (except in his first appearances), but in The Burton movie, he did kill, and it's amazing, and yes, I go against him, killing but if it fits the version I'm already with it still a little angry but if it's fine depending on how he's been characterised by the director/writers
Who else would love if sewer penguins were real?
Me!!!
"Why would the Zoo connect to the sewer?"
...because Gotham :|
Why wouldn’t it? Where do you think the animal waste goes?
This movie's biggest problem is a lack of focus on why there's a giant pole in the Batmobile.
2:20 have you ever seen Beatlejuice, Edward scissorhands, or sleepy hollow, big fish?
The funniest thing about this film is that Christopher Walken's character (whose name is similar to Shrek, which is hilarious) is an OC, as in, not on the comics at all, he's a fabrication for this movie.
Does Tim Burton have a screaming woman fetish? He did it with both his Batman love interests!
Burton's Batman films had a surreal, gothic atmosphere. It's not supposed to be 'dark' and 'gritty. Since is does not take place in our reality, I don't nitpick or delve on some of the plot points.
you should watch batman vs superman dawn of justice.
Idk, the comics always seem dark and gritty to me at least.
This review taught me that even though Sage is the Devil, Film Brain trumps Satan and made old Mephiles his bitch.
WE ALL MISS BAD MOVIE BEATDOWN!!!!!!!
Johan Makila I respect that you took enjoyment from this movie for I can't.
there is also a scrapped plot about Max and Penguin, basically it would be that they were long lost brothers
Batman Returns is a classic and will be respected as such.
"Anyone who knows me will say I would never read a comic book..."

@Dan S agreed.
I disagree. That's like dismissing opinions just because you'd rather plug your ears and ignore any naysayers rather than actually listen to actual criticism. And I hate people who act like that.

14:24 - 14:40 😭THANK YOU, BENNET THE SAGE!!! THANK YOOOOOU!!! 😭
Yeah, I love everything Batman, but Returns was never one of my favorites. Everything they said about it is true. What the movie should've been is this:
Millionaire philanthropist and mogul, Max Shreck, is running for mayor of Gotham.
I can't take any sentence that has the name "Shrek" seriously lol. I know it's not intentional, but damn it's funny to listen to.

Bad movie? You call a movie with great performances, art direction and cinematography bad? You are sooo wrong. And here are some answers to your nitpicks:
1) Wayne is sitting there, doing nothing, because he has nothing else to do, Batman is all he is now, lost, stuck in a loop of violence.

As long as Doug Walker isn’t in the review as well as his shadows, I’m good with the review
Well, he made it recently
@@MiXVoy His review was pretty good, actually. I like both his AND Mat and Bennett's.
I was more annoyed by Bennet in Matthew’s review
I agree the Penguin should of been the main villain in the first film and Joker in the sequel as it would of made better sense but still enjoyed Batman 89 and Returns.
And another thing Sage. I love Prince's songs on Batman and they're not stupid.
Returns is better than 89.
A much more creative movie. Most of their criticisms are nitpicks on the movie's surrealism, which was a conscient choice by Tim Burton.

Tim Burton did his own thing creatively wanting nothing to do with the 1989 movie
Love Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman and Danny Devito as Penguin, Pfeiffer still has that infamous whip to this day and she set the tone for future actresses to play the part going against injustice either men or women
Many considered it too dark; a lot of people couldnt get on board with the overly depressing penguin and the cat woman
Even the happy meal toy makers panicked by parents' reactions of the movie being demented and unpleasant for kids
Since then, people haven't really known what to make of this film
Naturally, it has its fans and its haters, but most people put it in the "I don't want to think about it because I don't know what to think about it" category
It's a good movie and nostalgia critic says it is silly and all over the place, but it's also visually stunning, well-acted, and hilariously demented
Lots of flaws are around the Penguin character it just needed to be less clumsy about it
Burton focuses as much on what unites the trio as what divides them, specifically the power they find behind their assumed identities even if all they can't be saved
A weird experiment he admits with it feeling overly dark but he embraces keeping Batman weird
There are elements of German Expressionism that seep through the stylistic flourish
Plus it's important to acknowledge that Reeves' "The Batman," and some aspects of Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" trilogy, has been greatly influenced by Burton's vision, which is undeniably important to understanding Batman as a character
I'm glad the movie overcame reports of behind-the-scenes creative disputes and mixed critical and fan response
It's really cool too that Michael Keaton is reprising his role for The Flash movie and Batgirl
This movie is amazing imo. It's very creative and for coming out in 92 I was very impressed then and i still am. This movie was ahead of it's time. This is burtons best movie for sure and maybe even the best batman film of all time too.
There were much better movies to come out that year.
Terminator 2: Judgement Day and Hard Boiled also came out in 92 and they're so much better than this.
Veronica Silk under Siege is also better. Juice as well
@Brandon Brooks Because every comment on this video is "dis movie is awesome, ur rong" without giving any reasons as to why.
As they say: "This was a Tim Burton movie with Batman characters in it"!
Batman returns is really creepy
Funny thing is I saw this in the theatre when I was 6.
Still one of the most messed up Christmas movies ever.
They are PEARLS isn't it? Batman Returns, Nightmare Before Christmas, Eyes Wide Shut.. unintentionally (or intentionally) casting this creepy shadow over Christmas. I love it.
17:58 And what's with the lady and her pet chihuahua anyway?
Penguin's mom is Diane Salinger, not Sandra Bernhard.
Film Brain and Sage are like a modern-day Siskel and Ebert.
I think its funny that the people in charge of the Gotham show gave Ruebens another chance to be the father of the Penguin.

Why are they reviewing Batman returns for bad movie beatdown it's a great movie
@DS 616 great movie having flaws dosent make it bad there is a difference between that and a bad movie
I don't think it's fair to stereotype Tim Burton. Not only was he making these films long before anyone had even heard of Hot Topic, but his first film, PEE-WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE, is actually quite colorful and does not fit all the usual Burton clichés.
So he landed this style until Beetlejuice then.
The collective term for bats is not a flock, its a colony, or cloud of bats.
Flock is probably a British term.
Big Fish is Burtons true masterpiece.
What a great emotional film.
It's perfect... almost
Also Their was a batman. The animated series episode called Birds of a Feather that did something with the penguin.
Made him sympathetic, but later on, he goes back being a villian.
