Everyone commenting about her bad technique needs to close their eyes and listen. She is amazing. Musicality always beats technique. I believe that her take on the first movement is refreshing and individual.
What is technique anyway? It's about what serves the sound a player is trying to make. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with Gabetta's technique; it works perfectly. It is only a matter of whether you like what she is communicating. While I might prefer other performances (and I do) I cannot fault the solidness of what is being presented here. Those who do ought to put themselves in a similar high pressure performance situation and see just how well they hold up; that question would be clearly answered.
Honestly those of you going crazy here about her technique can be quiet. I know her fingers arent curved and such, but that is a tip to help you keep in tune, and shes perfectly in tune the whole time. she has great intonation, and if she is at the point where she can play this at tempo and in tune with great musicality, she doesnt have to worry about those technique things for one sonata.
Agreed! Once you're a soloist your technique doesn't matter anymore... if you sell out concert halls with your tone there's not much the rest of us can say!
I love how fierce the cello sounds as she plays the low and high notes through out this piece. The piece definitely focuses on the cello and grabs your attention throughout the piece with the different pitch being presented.
It's too true -- her relatively slow and grounded tempo makes it twice as hard especially at the end of the first movement. Not that there's anything wrong with it.
Yes horn playing is fantastic! I got to play this piece in an orchestra on 2nd horn, which meant I got to listen to the solos and didn't have to play them!
If you listen to is recording with really good quality headphones, in the softer sections you can year a radio broadcast in spanish in the background about soccer or something xD
I,ve been so fortunate to play premier of his 15th symphony in 1971 or 1972 under the baton of his son Maxim{ what a terrible conductor},so Composer was there! It was in Moscow...amazing symphony!
I thought I was the only one who thought , Maxim is conductor so-so. Still I remember his performance of 5th and it was stunning ( this obsessive La repetition in strings at the very end - nobody had ever played it like him).
As someone who's really interested on composition, I must say that this piece is beautifully crafted. The orchestration is phenomenal, and the melodic/harmonic/rhythmic themes are so beautiful and interesting. And the way Shostakovich pieces them together is just so creative. I must say I do like his second cello concerto more but still I absolutely love this one and both of his cello concertos are my favorite ever.
Her thumb position playing is amazing. There are some wonderful recordings of her on RUclips, particularly in chamber music. It is great to have her on the scene.
Just outstanding cello playing! Thee entire orchestra completes this piece. But I must say this girl plays her heart out, Bravo!! I play cello and only wish I played at this magnitude!
Es una pieza no fácil de escuchar en las salas de concierto. Agradezco a quien puso esta excelente interpretación de Shostakovich. Ojalá pudiéramos verlo más seguido en la Sala Nezahualcóyotl de México.
Nobody can just repeat her way of playing. It would hurt your body to sickness, so indeed cello Chose her. She puts all her strength to feel and savior most of each note and it made her an athlete. No unnecesary glissando! Just absolute cleanliness and accuracy. 🎉
I agrre with the last comment. Her technique is not "standard" in the sense of usual cello teaching. But it works and results are excellent. Tempo is a little bit slow.
tomaspianist um YOU have no idea what you're talking about. Tempo is quite slow especially in the beginning, and she does use unconventional technique. I would know because I'm a cellist.
I also thought the first movement was rather slow at first, but after listening to the whole recording several times i think the tempo is just right, it fits with the rest of the concerto perfectly and succeeds in conveying melancholic yet energetic nature of the whole piece. Also, she plays last movement even faster then misha mayskiy :D
@@prowii52 as a cellist, I have to agree. The emotion in the 1st movement, while dramatic is not what I would consider to be Shostakovich like. She also uses legato in places that shouldn't, causing the music to drag even more. and she bounces the bow when others do not. Shostakovich is a great composer, and she is a great cellist.
Thrilling performance by an outstanding soloist and brilliant orchestra. The horn soloist plays with such precision and rich tone. Not enough superlatives.
I just picked up the sheet music for this.... I've been playing cello for almost 19 years having covered some of the more difficult repertoire put out by the likes of even Apocalyptica and 2Cellos.... And having read/played through the first movement for the first time just now, I feel that even 40 hours a day and playing it slowly so I can play it quickly may not even be enough.... and may even have to practice 80 hours a day just to get it slowly period Wish me luck people while I journey on this most perilous and dangerous adventure for any cellist to take on!
Oh it's a fellow twosetter! I just started playing the cello hoping that maybe after 40 hrs everyday, someday i'll get to play this beautiful piece, tho after seeing the sheet music im not so sure xd
There's something completely different about this music. Yes I know it's called classical but it's something unto itself. It's the antidote to boredom. It's impossible to ever hear it without discovering something new. Bravo Shostakovich!Bravo Gabettta!
This is most likely my favorite recording because of how the cellist can get the lower notes in the chords and double stops to speak so well, also the horn player is just amazing.

she's excellent for sure...but let's talk about Shostakovich...this is out of the world's music. amazing!!
💯A massive soul. ♥
27:36 Look at that Bassoonist smile, you can tell he’s been waiting the whole concerto for that moment. 😅
Shostakovich wrote some amazing bassoon solos!
0:15 Allegretto
6:55 Moderato
18:52 Cadenza -- Attacca
24:02 Allegro con moto
Merci pour cette interprétation dont on ne lasse pas de. Découvrir la générosité à chaque réécoute. Quel engagement !!!!
I clicked "Translate to English" on your comment and got "Allegro with motorbike"!

William Callaway her technique is superb... amazing
William Callaway she has a weird way of lifting her fingers but her technique is solid, don't know what it's about...
Indeed it is!
her fingers collapse when she pushes down the strings that's wack

10:43 This might be the best chord progression I've heard in my entire life
There is another one: Bela Bartok, concert for violin and orchestra nr 2, 2dn mouvement: Adagio!
Bro, watch the Prelude of the Bachianas n4 - Villa Lobos, u'll love it
Sol Gabetta, simplesmente genial. Um dos melhores Shostakovich que ouvi.
This performance is LIFE! I don't care what anyone thinks, it brings me joy. Thanks Sol.
Absolutely a superb performance by a cellist with indisputably solid technique and musicianship. Utterly captivating.

there is no problem with her technique, her bow control is fantastic
This horn actually played the notes right. Very difficult to do apparently, he should be recognized too lol.
It's too true -- her relatively slow and grounded tempo makes it twice as hard especially at the end of the first movement. Not that there's anything wrong with it.
He's a natural playing the horn. His name is Vicent Puertos, and has been the RTVE horn soloist since he was 19, I believe.
Yes, even in the Berlin Phil., it couldn't be done.
Lol, are you joking right now? Stefan Dohr SHREDS. Any of those guys do! Don't fucking say the Berlin Phil can't do it.

It bugs the hell out of me, kind of ruins the experience.
yep it's there, very disturbing to listen when hearing background sounds
I think thats actually the audience as this concert was in Mexico
I was so confused. Thanks for pointing it out.
composers like Shostakovich created art that no movie or novel or painting can contend; something about music transcends beyond restriction.

I listen metal music and I think this is kind of metal
You must try to listen Alfred Schnitke Concerto Grosso n.1

You can bet it mr. Hetfield!
Listen to Alfred Schnittkes Concerto for Viola
